As we switched, I pointed out the parallel to our discussion. “You’re right,” she said. “Many people would sit there uncomfortably because they wouldn’t want to make a fuss or because they’ve learned to ignore discomfort. We shrink ourselves in yoga classes because we don’t want to call special attention. Our effort to be invisible, to fit in, has fortified disempowerment and caused numerous injuries.” Melissa pointed out how we do this in our health. “The more we are accountable and present with our bodies, the less likely we are to blindly agree to invasive surgery or extreme drug therapy. We’re more likely to ask questions, participate in our health care alliance, and advocate for ourselves.”

Consider back surgery, many back problems are caused by lifestyle habits: sitting hunched over, lifting incorrectly, and the list goes on. Frequently, someone has surgery to alleviate the symptom, often followed by Physical Therapy (PT) to get them on their feet again, but if they don’t address the causes of their pain, they’ll be back five or ten years later for another surgery. Melissa has been pioneering work with physicians and physical therapists to use Yoga Therapy as complimentary medicine for a number of medical issues, including back pain. MelMarie Yoga works with physical therapists to take treatment plans and organize them into mindful sequences. The patient can then integrate these dynamic flows into his daily routine. Melissa also introduces Yoga Therapy and Stress Management Techniques to medical practitioners through corporate wellness programs.

Yoga brings wellness to medical personnel, professional and legal services, the hospitality industry and education facilities teaching sustainable health techniques through mindfulness, yoga and meditation. As a new mother, Melissa has noticed on a deeper level the benefits of self-care. One evening, as Melissa and her husband, Adam, were upstairs with their daughter, Iyla, a loud thump, thump, thump of something tumbling down the steps nearly stopped Melissa’s heart. Had Iyla managed to open the gate at the stairs?

Running from the bathroom with a surge of panic and adrenalin, Melissa learned that Iyla pushed the bathroom trash can at the top of the stairs causing it to overbalance. The panic she felt was as real as if the worst had happened. After making certain Adam had Iyla well in hand, Melissa took a moment to check in with herself and administer selfcare. She used “child’s pose” and slow breathing to allow her body to dissolve the adrenaline and regulate from the panic. Rather than ignoring the physical sensation, she used her practice to experience it and move beyond it. “My practice lives off the mat in so

many ways.” When we pay attention to our bodies, mind our breath, when we “come home to ourselves” on a regular basis, new pathways form in the brain. The more we fine-tune those neural pathways, the more likely we are to respond with conscious intention, rather than react with blind instinct. “As far as the body is concerned,” she contends, “the physical interpretation of trauma lives through sensation. The body doesn’t speak the language of stories and meaning. It only cares about our survival.” Research has shown that people who regularly practice yoga and meditation have thicker prefrontal cortexes. Melissa continues to explain how this

is the area of the brain that controls our executive functioning and decision making. “It is our ability to expand our knowing of who we are; cultivating more clarity, confidence, and compassion. Hurt people hurt people, when we understand this we can see how we can either contribute in the cycle or be a beacon of patience and understanding. It is one thing to understand this mentally, but to feel it physically. We can physically yield emotional and mental clarity through yoga.� Does everyone hope to bring about world peace? Well, Melissa Aguirre certainly does, and, after talking with her, I think the amazing founder of Melmarie Yoga may be on the right path to doing just that, one yoga pose at a time.

Melissa Aquirre is a certified C-IAYT, ERYT 500, YACEP yoga therapist, stress management specialist, and owner of Melmarie Yoga in San Antonio, TX. She advocates abundance within people, teaching them not only how to come home to themselves through the yoga practice, but also the realization of the sustainability generated through living a mindful life that heals, impacts, and inspires. At the tender age of eight, she began sewing furs in Alaska: mukluks, parkas and other accessories. She was raised in a family business that has grown to be the third largest furrier in the world. In San Antonio as an adult, she realized selling furs would be difficult because of the weather, so she adapted. Her passion for fashion lead her into a career in personalized customer care. She started out door to door, offering home shows, finding the perfect fashions and accessories for each and every client. From those humble beginnings she has created a complete personal shopping business, flying all over the world and meeting the best designers, bringing the finest fashions here to San Antonio. She is the voice of designers, matching their beautiful work perfectly with each of her clients. Bonita believes in the power of fashion to help people break through walls, leaping from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Her new jewelry line, Bonita Bling, which launches in 2018, will have something for every personal style and flair. I started modeling when I was 16. My younger sister was an actress and model. She would ask me to fill in during bridal shows when they needed guys and would introduce me to the girls after the show. I started worked with the Lari Nelson Fashion group and had no idea how far classes with Lari Nelson would take me. In 2003 I attended the MB expo and won the overall male model of the year at the expo in Dallas. I received a huge trophy but nothing solid materialized with any agencies after the expo. The following year I grew out my hair and decided to give expo a shot again. This year I didn’t win any awards but I met several agencies and

decided to sign in New York with Choice Models, a division on the Lyons Group.

I moved to New York after my semester of college ended at UTSA. Moving to New York or any new market is an exciting and intimidating opportunity at the same time. It feels like everyone has more experience than you but longer you stick with it you begin to really see you book grow and progress. I did mostly editorial work when I first moved to New York. I did work for YW and Glamor magazine and also did show room work for American Eagle. I built up my book with tear sheets and testing every opportunity I had. I was lucky enough

to book a runway show for Sergio Davila during fashion week in New York. It was also during fashion week that I met an agent from Milan at my agency in New York.

I signed with Beatrice, who at the time was one of the premier agencies in Milan. I came to Milan for fashion week and booked a runway show for John Richmond. I also met my agent from Paris during fashion week. I decided to signed with Next Models and moved to Paris. I traveled between New York, Milan and Paris but spent majority of my time in Paris. During my time in Paris I did jobs for print and showroom work for Levi Strauss. I was on the cover and featured in a editorial spread for a fashion magazine called 34. I was featured on the cover of J & J, the equivalent of seventeen magazine in France. I booked a major hair campaign in Amsterdam for Gardier and also booked a runway show for Gaspard Yurkievich during Paris’s fashion week.

After I returned from Europe I worked with the Campbell Agency in Dallas as I finish my bachelors degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Currently I’d like to begin teaching aspiring models again.

When Fear Crosses the Line SA MONTHLY MAGAZINE

because of a single episode of fear which crossed the line into anxiety. While closely related, the difference between anxiety and fear is that fear is the warning signal. Fear is fleeting. Once it has done its job of warning you, it goes away. Anxiety is the warning signal getting stuck in the “on” position when threats are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable. Anxiety is much more persistent than fear.

By Andrea L. Algar, Health & Wellness Editor Fear can be one of the most helpful of emotions we have. Fear is instinctive and intuitive and can alert us to harmful emotional or physical threats, risky situations or imminent danger, usually keeping us healthy and safe. Fear tends to motivate us to protect ourselves, which is a good thing. But what happens when things go wrong and fear crosses the line? Unchecked or exaggerated, fear can cause people to become anxious, suffer from panic attacks, cause obsessive thoughts and behaviors, or can result in post-traumatic stress (PTSD or PTSS), a condition that is not confined to the battlefield. As co-leader of Upward Bounds, a national fear of flying group based out of Boston, Massachusetts, I saw firsthand how 102 “normal” fears can go awry and cause ordinary people to avoid air travel altogether. Most fearful flyers try to rationalize their fears, citing much publicized air accidents as plausible reasons to avoid flying while in reality the fear is more complex. Why can’t fearful flyers comprehend the simple facts that far fewer accidents happen while flying than when taking a bath or even crossing a street? Seems simple enough, but for those who become anxious as their fears escalate, the body’s primal defenses take over in a fight or flight response that releases powerful chemicals naturally found in the body. This release causes physical symptoms such as rapid breathing, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness or imbalance, and even feelings of impending doom. All in a matter of seconds. People often think they are having a heart attack or are about to die or go crazy. This is often referred to as an anxiety attack or a panic attack. Fearful drivers, perhaps more understandable to most of us, rationalize their fears with the fact that driving can be a dangerous activity. It can be! Fear comes up at sensing the immediate danger of the situation, such as a near-accident. Anxiety comes up with the thought of anticipated or imagined dangers. Fear is not always a bad thing as it can serve useful purpose. A person who rock climbs should have a certain amount of fear in order to keep them from doing something too reckless. Sometimes a fear sounds silly or irrational. A person with a simple fear of balloons actually developed full blown phobia! How can this possibly happen? Amazingly, this usually happens

Allowed to continue unchecked, anxiety can lead to panic, which leads to chronic worry about another panic attack, followed by avoidance of any situation where they might be exposed to the panic. The cycle can be so powerful and so consuming that it often spreads into other fearful areas that one experiences. In extremes, or over time, panic can turn into so many phobic sensitivities that the person becomes housebound, a truly debilitating condition called agoraphobia. Once a person experiences an attack, they know with certainty that it is something that they never want to experience again. At this point, many people are able to move past it. They accept the fact that it most likely happened as a result of a specific trigger event or a situation where they felt they had no control. They can rationalize that they were not hurt by it and dismiss it from their thoughts. For others, however, it is not quite that easy. We don’t really know why some are able to keep fear in check and others cross a line invisible to others where the endless circle of anxiety-panic-worry-avoidance-anxiety takes over their life. What can be done to keep fear, “the helpful emotion”, in check? Calm yourself as quickly as possible. Calming methods replace your worry with self-control – the very opposite of the feelings that cause anxiety to escalate and your very best friend! If you are experiencing the physical symptoms of panic you need to cut the anxiety cord as quickly as possible utilizing methods that address the feelings in your body, as well as all your worries about the situation. Dr. Richard Raynard, founder of the Fear Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts, created 16 Calming Methods that work quickly to alleviate panic. These include a safe person, conversation, diaphragmatic breathing, stepping aside, and getting help, among other methods we used in our fear of flying classes and in his individual work with anxious men and women. If you, or someone you know, suffers from fear that has gotten out of control, look for a professional with a specialty in panic disorders. Fear can cross the line, but there are many effective ways to push it back on the good side!

Myths and Facts about Orthodontic Treatment While everyone understands that dentists treat teeth, not everyone is aware of what an orthodontist can do to make their smile better. Let’s talk about a few misconceptions about orthodontists. 1) Myth: A dentist is the same as an orthodontist. Fact: While all orthodontists are dentists, all dentists are not orthodontists. It can be confusing but let’s break it down. It all comes down to education and training. To become an orthodontist, someone must get their dental degree first. After completing four years of dental school, a dentist can apply for orthodontic residency that can last two to three years. After completing all the schooling and passing an examination they can practice as an orthodontist. 2) Myth: Children need to wait until their permanent teeth come in for orthodontic treatment Fact: The American Association of Orthodontics recommends all children get a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age seven. Orthodontists can identify subtle problems with jaw growth while primary teeth are still present. While your child’s teeth may appear straight, there could be issues

that only an orthodontist can detect. Early treatment, also called Phase-I treatment, can prevent problems from

y name is Ana Cristina Serrano. I am a 32 year old mother of an amazing five year old child. My story began about 2-3 years ago when I first started at Lifetime fitness. I met my trainer Todd the first day. Ever since I began training with him he pushed me and was very supportive. I began with 28% body fat and I weighted 135. Today I'm at 19% body fat and weight 140.

Let’s be real; getting old sucks. We are all trying to stay younger, longer. We look for any pill, drink, shot, injection or diet plan that is going to keep us looking and feeling younger. I am a huge proponent of functional fitness for longevity, so looking past those short term fixes, I recommend two important pieces of advice for my clients to stay ageless. First, take a look at your fitness routine. You should always do something that challenges you. The old adage if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you might be cliché but it is absolutely correct; once your workout stops being challenging, you either need to change it up or increase intensity. On the same token, don’t be afraid to try new workouts and new classes; it is good to keep your body guessing and this is how to keep your body AND your mind sharp. Your mind (brain) is just like any other part of the body and should always be challenged. I strongly believe that workouts and fitness classes that

require motor skills. coordination, and concentration are the key to staying young. Once your brain stops being challenged, it’s all over! So as you age, find new workouts that are going to challenge your coordination and that mind-body connection as well as challenge your muscles. Classes at in Balance are all developed around this central idea that challenging the mind and the body are one and the same and equally important, so taking classes like dance cardio or barre are going to do just that! The other piece of this ageless equation is, of course, nutrition. My number one tip??? Water!!!! Hydration is key to keeping young, supple skin as well as keeping your organs functioning properly. Most people walk around in a state of dehydration and don’t even know it. Water can cure things you don’t even realize you have like dry skin, muscle cramps, itchy scalp, fatigue, lethargy, lack of energy during your workout, constant hunger, insomnia and more. And when it comes to food, keep it WHOLE. Whole foods are the key to maintaining a healthy weight and a healthy body on the inside. Eat as least processed as you can and reap the benefits of all the vitamins and minerals that food has as it source.

Blood Pressure – the pressure of the blood against the inner walls of the blood vessels, varying in different parts of the body during different phases of contraction of the heart and under different conditions of health, exertion, etc. When the nurse or doctor takes your blood pressure they will give you two numbers – example; 120/80 - systolic/diastolic

If it lowers then I can proceed with some weight training, more like a light circuit training or Pilate’s workout, preventing a surge in their blood pressure. With each session from then on, I will continue to monitor their blood pressure until we are able to lower it to a healthier level. Once I see their readings began to lower to systolic 120 – 130 / diastolic 80 – 60, then I began adding intensity to their workouts with weights.

SLEEP Perchance to Heal By Dr. Wendy Askew

D

id you know that the biological purposes of sleep are not fully understood by scientists? That seems hard to believe given how obviously important sleep is for so many of our bodily functions. It is important for memory consolidation, tissue repair, metabolism and for hormone balance. It replenishes us, relieves fatigue and gives us renewed energy to function each day. In a society that seems to be constantly pressuring us to do more and produce more, and demanding more of our time, our sleep seems to be one area that we can sacrifice to meet those demands. It may be exactly the wrong action with respect to our health. It is a scientifically established fact, that eight hours per night (with very little variation between individuals) is what a human adult needs for optimal health. Studies of Americans show that 20% of us report getting fewer than six hours of sleep per night regularly. Many people insist that they don’t need eight hours a night; and function perfectly on only five or six hours of sleep. The truth is, that only 5% of us carry the genetic mutation that allows optimal functioning on six hours of sleep per night. Those aren’t good odds, when you are gambling with your health. According to research from the Johns-Hopkins School of Medicine, sleep-deprived individuals have a 3-fold increased risk for developing diabetes; a 36% increased risk for colorectal cancer; a 33% increased risk for dementia; a 48% increased risk for heart disease; and a 50% higher risk for obesity for those people who get less than 5 hours of sleep per night. A weakened immune system, increased pain and depression, and increased risk of accidents are other consequences of chronic sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, many people suffer from sleep disturbances that prevent them from sleeping adequately, even though they report being exhausted much of the time. There are many different types of sleep dysfunction, including difficulty falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, and restless legs syndrome. 121 Proper evaluation and testing can often identify causes of sleep dysfunction and nonsedative therapies can help restore restful sleep, and better health. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) (bedtime behaviors) has been shown to be equally effective as medications for inducing/promoting sleep in the short term, but in the long-term, CBT-I is far superior to medications. Long-term dependence on sleeping pills can interfere with alertness and memory, and over time, they can become less effective, making the original problem even worse. Some good nighttime habits to promote sleep include: Try to have a consistently established bedtime. Keep your bedroom as dark as possible and ideally between 60 & 70 degrees Fahrenheit. CPS bill-allowing. An ice bath shortly before bed is reportedly very effective at promoting good sleep. Although I haven’t tried this yet. Try not to look at screens emitting blue lights (most devices) for at least one hour before bedtime. ‘Blue light’, mimics the light emitted from the sun and indicates to our brains that we should be in an awake and alert state. These lights suppress production of melatonin (a key sleep hormone) and promote production of cortisol (an ‘alert’ hormone). The effect on our brains from these lights, is the equivalent of hearing a loud barking dog, which is not conducive to sleeping for most of us. Medications, caffeine consumption after 2 pm, hormone-imbalances and the fascinating science of neuro-transmitter imbalances are other factors that can impair sleep. Holistic treatments for sleep disorders go far beyond melatonin and lavender essential oils, and often help to restore good sleep patterns for patients suffering from sleep disorders. Better sleep is an important step on the path to wellness. There are many causes, and many treatments available to help you achieve a better night’s rest.

It seems like every week a new subdivision is breaking ground. Within a 20 mile radius 142 of downtown San Antonio there are over 1,000 new construction homes listed in the San Antonio Board of Realtors MLS. Prices range from the mid $100’s all the way to $3m+ for new custom homes. I was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the age of 11. I grew up in Luling, Texas. A new beginning in a different country with so many things to learn that I dedicated my time to studying and making sure I did well to graduate from High School. After attending a Technical Institute in Austin Texas and receiving a degree in Electronic Engineering and Technology, I went to work for Advance Micro Devices in Austin, Texas and that’s where I realize that this world is a huge place with incredible opportunities and It would be up to me to make it happen. I married Daniel Flores and have three beautiful children. My family is my pride and joy. Victoria is 17, Mateo is 11 and my Emma is 9 years old. We love spending time with our children as they grow up playing soccer and other activities in school. In 2004 I was given the opportunity to come into a world of Employee Benefits and have enjoyed it, however the big breakthrough came about in October of 2014 when I joined New York Life Insurance Company. An MBA was on my mind, so I stayed in San Antonio to teach while completing graduate school online. I love San Antonio, its heritage, traditions, and the numerous fun things there are to experience here! In my free time, I’m with my Dalmatian Cerberus drinking coffee at places like Local Coffee and Aspen’s Brew, having brunch at Bakery Lorraine, hiking around Phil Hardberger, or exploring The Pearl Brewery. Other big hobbies of mine include travel, with places like Norway and France on my bucket list (to see the Northern Lights and attend a lesson on baking authentic

macarons), health and wellness, photography, baking, and worshipping at Shearer Hills Baptist Church. As an aspiring businesswoman, I’m inspired by companies like The Walt Disney Company, which I have had the honor of working for, with their Imagineering, to Frost Bank with their customer service, to Apple with their innovation. TIME TO JUDGE By 164Gabriel Diego Delgado Benjamin Disraeli is said to have stated: “Change is Inevitable, Change is Constant”. Truth be told as Kendall County and Boerne, in particular, surges in population and continues to experience those fabled first-world, big-city growing pains. Moments away from breaking ground on several new multiuse residential developments, a city hall complex, a famed Buckee’s location, and numerous H I-10 corridor revamps, the “front porch of the hill county” is budding with progress. However, one glowing red circle on the public’s radar involves a county matter… a political matter… a changing of the guard matter…yes, a breath of fresh air. Finally, a woman is running for the recently formed 451st District Court Judge seat. Dominated by a Conservative Republican constituency, Kendall County is ready to embrace aspects of 21st century politics and allow gender to not interfere in the quality of candidacy. On the evening of Wednesday, August 23, 2017 in the Ye Kendall Inn Ballroom of Boerne, TX, one hundred and seventy people gathered for the special press

announcement by Kirsten Cohoon, The City of Boerne’s City Attorney and Chief Prosecutor – declaring her political campaign for the 451st District Court Judge of Kendall County. Ye Kendall Inn, a historically significant building founded by the settlers of Boerne in 1859 served as the perfect backdrop for this significant event. Cohoon is notably, the first female candidate to run for the 451st District Court Judge in Kendall County. In the late 19th century the inn acted as a temporary rest stop for those with experiencing breathing issues. A makeshift luxury living hospital setting allowed people to relax and enjoy the hill country air. On August 23, 2017, the inn allowed those to breathe in an air of progress. With a dominate theme of Republican Red, the Ye Kendall Inn Ballroom’s tables were adored red rustic baskets, cloth and flowers as a country-time classiness radiated from the hand-selected décor. As the crowd surged, the ratio of woman to men was clearly visible, showing force in numbers; elevating Cohoon’s presence among this demographic; one that flexes its muscles at the polls.

Cohoon stated, “I am running as a Christian, a conservative, and a proud descendant of a Kendall County founding family, I would be honored to serve the county as district judge as I have served Boerne as its city attorney. Kendall County deserves a conservative judge, who will ensure everyone receives a fair trial without delay, will uphold the Constitution, and will oversee the 451st District Court with the highest integrity and ethics.� Having opened the night with a prayer, Cohoon does not shy away from her beliefs nor the grit of the prospects of the new job, as she stroked the fires of readiness; anticipating for long nights at the bench, phone calls in the middle of the night and an eagerness to make a difference. Heavily invested in the community, Cohoon actively gives back to the Kendall County community as a board member of Boerne Performing Arts, as a board member of the Kendall County Republican Women Club, as the Founder and Director of the annual Boerne Lemonade Day, and as the Founder and Coordinator of 9/11 Wills for Heroes program that serves area first responders.

Cohoon has also received numerous industry honors for her legal accomplishments including recognition for leading the best solo general counsel legal department by Texas Lawyer in 2016 and previously as the best solo general counsel by the Texas General Counsel Forum in 2013. She served as the Kendall County Bar Association president in 2014 and as a board member from 2012-2015. The local incumbent is Judge Bill Palmer who was appointed by Governor, Greg Abbott when the 451st District Court Judge position was created. T E X A S BATHROOM BI LL Texas Special Legislative Session includes ‘Bathroom Bill’ By: Daniel E. Serna, B.A., Politics Editor

On May 29, 2017 Texas’ 85th Legislature came to a 166 close with some “unfinished business” that Gov. Greg Abbott believes needs to be concluded. Governor Abbott called for a special legislative session which began on July 18 and will last for 30 days to re-look at certain bills. “I’m announcing a special session to complete that unfinished business,” said Gov. Abbott. One bill making headlines since it was introduced in the 85th Legislation is the “bathroom bill” also known as a ‘’privacy bill.” If set into law during the special session the bathroom bill would ban transgender persons from using rest rooms of the gender they identify as, instead making transgender persons use the bathroom of their biological born gender. Many Texans feel this is an assault on the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning) community. Other Texans feel that the bathroom bill needs to be placed into law for the protection of privacy and to protect children in rest rooms.

Constituents and several corporations—Amazon, Uber, Pepsi, PayPal, Chase and even Big Oil Companies— claim the “bathroom bill” will hurt The State of Texas economically but more importantly it will make Texas look unethical. The bathroom bill passed the House of Representatives but failed when it was introduced to the Senate. Gov. Abbott was disappointed about the outcome and called for a special session to reintroduce the bill along with others. “If I’m going to ask for tax-payers to foot the bill for a special session I intend to make it count,” said Gov. Abbott. The “Bathroom Bill” was one of the most contentious issues of the Texas 85th Special Session. Ultimately, the “Bathroom Bill” was not successfully adopted as Texas law in the special session as Gov. Greg Abbott hoped. North Carolina’s HB 2, similar to Texas’ proposed Bathroom Bill, continues to have its constitutionality questioned.

Back​then,​my​entrepreneurial​dream​was​more​like​ an​entrepreneurial​nightmare.​The​kind​where​you’re​ tossing​and​turning​in​a​pool​of​your​own​sweat.​The​ kind​where​you​realize​you’re​having​a​nightmare,​ but​are​completely​paralyzed​and​can’t​wake​up.

Chinese​philosopher​Lao​Tzu​said,​“The​journey​of​ 1,000​miles​begins​with​a​single​step.”​At​first​glance,​ the​purpose​of​this​quote​seems​to​be​to​remind​us​ that​any​big​goal​can​be​achieved​when​you​break​ it​down​into​small​steps.​For​the​entrepreneur,​there​ is​a​deeper​and​much​more​powerful​meaning.​It’s​

PASSION FOR PRESERVATION LEADS SUSAN BEAVIN TO PRESIDENCY It is said that successful non-profits are run like a business. And running a nonprofit organization takes all the skills, expertise, time, energy and dedication of a paid business executive—even if you do it for free. Ask Susan Beavin, the newly elected president of the highly successful San Antonio Conservation Society, who is already putting in 50 to 60-hour weeks. As president, this businesswoman (aka dedicated volunteer) presides over its 35-member board of directors; seven executive officers; 1,500 members; the Conservation Society Foundation and its Capital Club efforts; and the Society’s 30 committees. She understands all those entities, having served as First Vice President from 2015-2017 where she steadfastly attended and spoke to the City Boards and Commissions under her purview, and chaired the Society’s Historic Farm & Ranch Complexes committee for two years. “As we enjoy our 93rd year, I see an opportunity to engage our membership in activities that promote our mission, and for the Society to continue to be a dynamic force in our community,” says Beavin. “I am honored to be a part of that force.” A native of San Antonio, Beavin has lived in Texas and Vermont. With a BS from U

of Houston, she taught middle and high school science in Texas and Vermont. Additional work experience includes insurance agent, assistant restaurant manager, bookkeeping assistant, and coowner of two businesses in Vermont. Beavin has also co-authored Texas Cretaceous Bivalves and their Localities and also co-authored the booklet on the Scenic Loop – Boerne Stage – ToutantBeauregard Historic Corridor.
