Georgia_Regular

Georgia was designed in 1993 by Matthew Carter and it was designed for the Microsoft Corporation. It was released by Microsoft on Novermber 1st 1996, as part of the core fonts for the web. Georgia was designed for the clarity on a computer screen even when it was used in small sizes. It’s anatomy was tailored to this.

Constructions: Georgia has a continous construction there is a smooth transition between strokes, theres no breaks between elements and no emphatic points. Modelling: For Georgia the relative difference between the thickest and thinnest parts of the letter forms are high with a vertical angle of stress and gradual transition. Weight: The weight or thickness of Georgia across the entire font is medium. With the colour of the font being medium as well.

Shape: The shape of Georgia embodies edges parallel which flare at the end creating the serifs. With regards to the curves they are fractures when creating oval arms or bowls.

Terminations: With regards to the baseline terminal serifs within Georgia, they are slab serifs which are sharp and refined. The ascender terminals are ‘Roman’ with a sharp and refined serif. The ascenders match that of the baseline. The x-height terminals for characters such as the lower case ‘c’, ‘r’, ‘e’ etc, are fully rounded. As for the upper case terminals such as ‘T’, ‘E’, ‘F’ etc, are symmetrical and vertical. Proportions: Georgia has a large x-height making it visible at smaller sizes which made it perfect for screen. The width of Georgia is medium with the capital width generally regular. Georgia’s ascenders reach high than the cap height.

Key Factors: There are certain key factors that relate to Georgia. For example with the lower case characters they are double storied and have horizontal cross bars. The characters sit on the base line apart from the descenders, such as the lower case ‘g’ which is double storied with a closed tail. As for the upper case characters the apex is flat and they are without spurs. The upper case characters sit on the baseline with exception for the ‘Q’ who has descending long tail which does not intersect the bowl. One key character point about Georgia is that their legs are also straight. Flat apex
