With the holiday season in full swing, many people are feeling the pressure to wrap up their holiday shopping, while others are just starting to think about their shopping lists. Rather than battling crowds at a mall or hoping the gift you purchased online arrives in time or looks like the photograph on the website, rely on your hometown merchants for quality products, helpful customer service and the ability to see gifts in person before purchasing. Shopping at North Olympic Peninsula stores takes some of the stress out of purchasing last-minute gifts and has many numerous other benefits. We asked a few local business and tourism experts in each community about the importance and benefits of shopping locally. Here’s what they said:
PORT ANGELES
According to Charlie Comstock, member services manager of the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce, here are the top 10 reasons to shop local: 1. KEEPING IT IN THE COMMUNITY By purchasing at locally owned businesses, more money recirculates in the Port Angeles community. Local businesses often patronize other local businesses, service providers and farms. 2. REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINTS, CREATING A HEALTHIER ENVIRONMENT Independent, community serving businesses are people-sized. They typically consume less land, carry more locally-made products, locate closer to residents and create less traffic and air pollution. Buying from a local business helps the environment by conserving energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. More goods within walking and biking distances create less pollution and traffic congestion. 3. CREATES MORE GOOD JOBS Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally. In our community, they provide good jobs to local residents. As Sequim twinkles with colorful holiday lights, small businesses beckon with holiday bargains — all with the catchphrase of “Shop local!” “I feel very passionate about shopping local,” said Jodi Minker, administrative assistant with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, in early December. “Approximately $68 of every $100 spent at a local business is in our economy nationally,” Minker said. “Shopping locally supports local business owners that have ties to our community and tend to get more involved in decisions that will shape the local environment. When you shop locally, you are helping give back to your community.” Some people are concerned about the cost of shopping locally, but, Minker said, “if you factor in gas prices, travel time and traffic, then you’re not only saving money but you could be helping a business owner’s daughter to afford dance lessons.” Minker noted that Sequim’s small businesses donate more to local nonprofit organizations than their corporate counterparts. “You can help establish a sense of community pride by shopping local,” Minker added. “I’ve also been saying, ‘Sequim has it all’ because anything you’re looking for on your Christmas list can be found in Sequim, in my opinion, from highquality toys, fine jewelry, the season’s latest electronics and even trendy bootsocks,” Minker said. “People travel from all over the world to come to Sequim for products and experiences they can’t get anywhere else. As cool December rains soak the western side of Clallam County, area residents are preparing their last-minute holiday shopping lists. Lissy Andros, executive director of the Forks Chamber of Commerce, explained there are a variety of reasons to support local businesses. “Whether you are Christmas shopping or simply buying needed items for everyday use, shopping local is important. An investment in Forks by shopping locally provides local businesses an opportunity to employ your friends, neighbors and loved ones, and maybe even you. “Shopping local enables local shops to donate to local kids, charities and fundraisers. And shopping locally ensures a vibrant local economy.” Forks-area stores cater specifically to the needs and wants of the community, Andros said. “Shelves are stocked, pricing is competitive and the people are friendly, so remember to shop local this holiday season and beyond.”

‘Hand up, not a handout’ Peninsula Home Fund offers a chance to help neighbors in need by Peninsula Daily News
A Port Ludlow family received money to buy gasoline to go to medical appointments and pay the heating bill after the bread-winner suffered a stroke. A $50 voucher for food and school supplies was enough to tide over a recent transplant to Port Townsend and his daughter before he found a job. A Forks family got a voucher for winter boots and jackets for the children and work clothes for a new job. A Port Angeles woman who had lost her job got help paying her rent and electric bill and, she said, found out she wasn’t alone. Using a record-breaking $271,981 in 2014, more than 2,700 individuals and households in Jefferson and Clallam counties have received help so far this year from the Peninsula Daily News’ “hand up, not a handout” Peninsula Home Fund. Until New Year’s Eve, the Peninsula Home Fund — a safety net for North Olympic Peninsula residents when there is nowhere else to turn — is seeking contributions for its 27th annual holiday fundraising campaign. Peninsula Daily News will publish stories every Wednesday and Sunday during the campaign listing contributors and reporting on how the fund works. Peninsula Home Fund is a unique nonprofit program: l No money is deducted by the Peninsula Daily News for administration fees or any other overhead. care agency on the Peninsula. The money goes to help the most vulnerable members of our community, from infants to families to seniors. Please note: Because of heavy community demands, the loss of grants because of the economy and recent cuts in government funding, OlyCAP beginning in 2012 was permitted to use 10 percent — 10 cents of every dollar donated — to pay for the vital programs and services for Home Fund clients. (Previously there were no deductions.) OlyCAP has kept it in the area of 8 percent to 10 percent, a fraction of the average overhead of other nonprofits. l The Home Fund is not a welfare program. Money is used to give families and individuals from Port Townsend to Forks, from Quilcene and Brinnon to Sequim, Joyce and LaPush “a hand up, not a handout” to get through an emergency situation. Assistance, which usually averages less than $100, is limited to one time in a 12-month period. The average amount of help this year has been $62.04 per person. Money from the fund is used for hot meals for seniors in Jefferson and Clallam counties; warm winter coats for kids; home repairs for a low-income family; needed prescription drugs; dental work; safe, drug-free temporary housing; eyeglasses — the list goes on and on. All instances of help are designed to get an individual or family through a crisis — and back to self-sufficiency.

Home Fund case managers often work with each individual or family to develop a plan to become financially stable — and avoid a recurrence of the emergency that prompted aid from the fund. As needed, Peninsula Home Fund contributions are often used in conjunction with money from churches, service clubs and other donors, enabling OlyCAP to stretch the value of the contribution. The goal again: “a hand up, not a handout.” l All contributions are IRS tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law for the year in which the check is written. Your personal information is kept confidential. PDN does not rent, sell, give or otherwise share your address or information with anyone or make any other use of it. Since its beginning in 1989, the fund has relied on the support of Jefferson and Clallam residents. Individuals, couples, businesses, churches, organizations and school groups set a new record for contributions in 2014 — $271,981 — smashing the old record of $268,389 set Dec. 31, 2013. As of Sept. 30, $168,364 has been spent for Home Fund grants. And as we move into winter, the toughest period of the year, all of the remaining money — $119,000 — is expected to be spent before Dec. 31.

Each year as the weather gets colder, local food banks see an increase in people needing food or goods. That need is increased even more by requests for help during the holiday season. According to food bank officials across the North Olympic Peninsula, the demand continues to grow each year. This Thanksgiving, the Port Angeles Food Bank provided 600 boxes of food to families in need. “We had to put a cap on the number of boxes this year because we had to outright buy most of our turkeys and hams, which used a substantial portion of our budget,” said Kevin Perry, warehouse manager at the Port Angeles Food Bank. Although the Port Angeles Food Bank is not distributing Christmas baskets — the Salvation Army is handling requests this year — Perry said he expects people to ask for help during Christmas because they missed the deadline to sign up for a basket. “On average, we feed close to 100 families during each of our three weekly distribution days, so that’s more than 1,000 requests each month,” Perry said. “We anticipate more people coming in asking for food this winter. Since we went through a large portion of our stock to meet Thanksgiving requests, any donation is greatly appreciated.” Sequim Food Bank officials saw an increase in the number of people seeking help at Thanksgiving and anticipate more requests at Christmas than last year. “We supplied 900 Thanksgiving boxes of food this

year, which was an increase from the 850 boxes we provided to Sequim families last year,” said Stephen Rosales, Sequim Food Bank board president. “We are anticipating needing at least 700 boxes of food for Christmas.” Rosales said Christmas food boxes will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 18 and 19, and from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 21. “There’s not a sign-up process to receive a box,” Rosales said. “People simply need to supply documentation that they live within the Sequim School District boundaries.” Making a donation can be as simple as adding a few items to a shopping cart while gathering supplies for holiday dinners and parties. Another idea is to donate non-perishable items in your pantry that you haven’t used or of which you have duplicates. “Monetary donations and gift cards to area grocery stores really help us because we can stretch a dollar further than the average shopper because of our status as a food bank,” Perry said. At all food banks, any donation is appreciated, but these items are especially sought after: canned proteins such as tuna, beans, rice, peanut butter, stews, soups or other canned meals. Following the holidays, many food banks will be facing nearly empty shelves. Yet the need for food, especially during the winter months when seasonal layoffs are common, remains, according to food bank officials. “We are a year-round food bank and winter doesn’t end after the holidays,” Perry said. “Feeding those in need is a continuous process so restocking the food bank’s shelves is an ongoing effort.” Rosales said the Sequim Food Bank receives more donations during October, November and December than other months, which helps supply food for people in need during the holidays. “But people need to eat throughout the year so any donation after the holidays will help us restock empty shelves and continue to provide meals for those in need,” he said. Donations of non-perishable, ready-to-eat meals for homeless patrons are always needed. “We offer what we call ‘home-free’ bags more frequently to those in need and these bags feature non-perishable, shelf-stable items that do not require cooking or storage,” Perry said. Non-food items collected at many food banks include unopened dog and cat food; cat litter; opened or unopened toiletries including shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and soap; paper products such as toilet paper and paper towels; feminine hygiene products and baby diapers.
