south call for entries

It’s a

thing

A moving exhibition of South African creativity.

Exhilarating. Compelling. Controversial. SOUTH seeks to uncover the finest examples of South African creativity across a broad spectrum of disciplines and forms. And, for the first time on one platform, showcase a dazzling array of our finest creative produce.

Stoned Cherrie

ART. ARCHITECTURE. ADVERTISING. CRAFT. DESIGN. FASHION. FILM&VIDEO. JEWELLERY. MUSIC. NEW MEDIA. PERFORMANCE ART. PHOTOGRAPHY. A celebration of the gloriously positive, idiosyncratically naïve, ridiculously sardonic, richly contradictory, relentlessly spontaneous creative imagination inherent in our (don’t cry now) beloved country. SOUTH seeks to encapsulate the bold, lawless, cheeky, crossover, politically incorrect flavour of our South African creative psyche.

THIS WAY UP Because SOUTH is the new north, a complete turnaround of the planet stereotype, there is nothing finite or predictable about what we are looking for.

Where the north may exhibit an ordered sense of detached coolness, SOUTH is a thundering stampede of chaos and heat. A happy accident of third and first worlds. A vibe. A jol. A state of mind. Embracing contradiction and collision. That iconic crossroad: where earthy Afrika meets contemporary design. The kind of creative excellence that will best influence the judges is neither black nor white, nor ethnic, nor neutral, nor euro, nor west, nor east. It’s a harmony out of contradiction. A balance of extremes. That fine line between order and chaos. SOUTH seeks executions that capture the soul of this mystique. THE TONE Gloriously positive, ridiculously naïve, relentlessly spontaneous. Bold, lawless, cheeky, crossover, politically incorrect. About finding a home for sacred cows – the braaivleis. About changing the world by MakingADifference.

THE BASICS Design Indaba has collaborated with the Creative Circle and The Loerie Awards to launch the Creative Alliance. Dedicated to promoting South African creativity on an international front, the alliance will be initiating a travelling exhibition sponsored by the SABC. The exhibition will debut at Design Indaba 2009. The exhibition will comprise existing local and international designs that best encapsulate SOUTH, as well an award, that is open to participation from creatives across all industries. Three prizes will be awarded. The overall winner receives R100 000. Second place receives R50 000. Third place receives R25 000. Submissions for SOUTH is open to creatives over the age of 21. Winners will be announced in February 2009. The closing date for entries in all regions is 15 November 2008. Works will be received between 13 and 15 November 2008 at collection centres in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. Entries unable to to be delivered to a collection point may be submitted by photograph.

THE PROOF Hoezit pap and sushi. Sawubona high-class elephant dung ashtrays. Viva our rather shweeet giant plastic chicken installation. SOUTH LEGENDS POINT THE WAY If that fusion crossover is about to become a blur, look no further than our most distinctive footprint, our past and current legends, the SOUTH Hall of Fame.

DEPARTMENTS:

NOW SHOWING SNAKES Stanimir Stoykov is a Bulgarian-born, Joburg-based indie filmmaker whose ‘low-budget glamour’ movies are beginning to attract attention through screenings at night clubs, art galleries and independent cinemas. Stoykov has been writing, directing and producing short black comedies in the vein of John Waters and Bruce la Bruce since 2002 and has already released a number of provocative titles such as Leaps Ahead, Thrush, Pussy, Lesbian Braai and Fannie. And yes, the movies are as crazy as they sound. Snakes is Stoykov’s latest cinematic foray into the bizarre underbelly of suburbia. It tells the story of Sheila Brown (played by Isidingo star Robert Whitehead), an evil television evangelist who, together with her lesbian partner Shirley Gold (Brian Webber), is running a successful Christian cosmetics company. An unexpected visit from Sheila’s long lost transsexual son, Sebastian (Carl Beukes), disturbs the status quo at Sheila Brown Cosmetics. Sebastian demands money for the completion of his sex change but Sheila is not about to part with her hard-earned cash so easily. She has to find a way to deal with her embarrassing offspring, but will she go as far as to murder her own child? Find out at www.onesmallseed.tv
