Will BP’s Oil Stain the Whole Industry? By Matthew Scott After billions of dollars spent and many years working to define itself as an energy company that protects the environment by going "beyond petroleum," last month's oil rig explosion and subsequent spill in the Gulf of Mexico could leave oil giant BP (BP) with the unfortunate legacy as the oil industry's "biggest polluter." It could also be the watershed event that negatively affects the oil industry's long-term profitability. As the assessment of the amount of oil gushing into the Gulf changes daily, experts are now preparing for the eventuality that the spill could become a worse disaster than the Exxon Valdez tanker spill in 1989. Unflattering comparisons to Hurricane Katrina have already been made, so the impact this disaster will have on the longterm corporate reputation of BP could be enormous.

exploration well serves as a test to confirm whether the firm's safety-driven focus of the past few years has been effective," wrote Morningstar equity analyst Catharina Milostan in a recent note to investors. “A longer-term cost could be on the reputational front after BP is reviewed on current efforts. Constraints on future offshore oil drilling in the United States could have longer-term effects, slowing drilling and production growth plans in this region. Deep-water U.S. production accounted for 11% of BP's total production in 2009, and major deep-water projects are underway to bring recent discoveries to production over the next few years.” BP has major interests in the Gulf of Mexico, including expansion of production at its Thunder Horse Field -- the largest oil field in the Gulf -- and start-up production at the Great White field in the ultra-deepwater Gulf, where it has a 33.3% ownership stake. The company's ability to quickly and effectively clean up the current spill may have an effect on the level of future drilling and exploration it's allowed to do at these other sites. Reputation Survived Previous Disasters Somehow, BP's reputation as an environmentally friendly company wasn't mortally wounded after the March 2005 Texas refinery explosion that killed 15 workers and injured 180, or the March 2006 Alaskan pipeline spill that resulted in the cleanup of 267,000 gallons of crude.

But given the scope of the ecological and economic damage that's resulting from the current spill, BP won't be given the benefit of the doubt for this accident. The British company's reputation with the general public has already been soiled.

Brand Keys, a research firm that tracks customer loyalty, says that since the accident, BP has fallen from top to last in rankings of customer loyalty among the seven largest oil companies. Investors have expressed their displeasure through stock trades, sending shares of BP down from $60.09 at the close on April 21 to $50.99 at the close on May 5. Shares of BP had fallen 83 cents to $50.16 in afternoon trading on Thursday. Damage Extends to Entire Oil Industry Ultimately, BP's damaged reputation as a company that can drill for oil safely may extend to the entire oil industry. Congress has already introduced new legislation to curb offshore drilling in the U.S. and to increase the liability limits for oil companies from $75 million to $10 billion. “This spill may set back progress for offshore drilling by decades,” said Phil Flynn, senior energy analyst for PFGBest Research. “This may do to offshore drilling in the U.S. what the Three Mile Island debacle did for nuclear plant production.” Matthew Scott is a markets and investing writer for DailyFinance.

ecently I attended the graduations of my daughter and my nieces from high school. After calculating how long it has been since I experienced this great day in the life of a teen, I suddenly realized how the times have changed. Graduation time is a time for family, and friends to celebrate an accomplishment in a teenager's academic life. The senior prom is a time that we never forget as teens, and as adults because of the fellowship that we experience.

There is something about sitting around them and listening to their life experiences that a Google search cannot give you. Whether it is a recipe from Grandma or advice from Grandpa, we are letting go of some history that can never be

Today it’s Facebook, Twitter, and texting that has further widened the gap of social time that family use to have. Or how sitting in the kitchen and learning just what ingredients it takes to make that sweet potato pie so tasty it makes you want to slap your momma it’s so good. Oh yeah it's a history lesson that we are missing out on, because we have been distracted by so much technology. Every time I sit around my family and just talk, I gain new information that helps me in raising my children. The next time that you are at a family get together leave that laptop or smart phone off and just enjoy the conversation and listen to the experiences of our loved ones. You will come away laughing, crying, and inspired. But the one thing that you will experience is greatest commandment of all, LOVE. Wake up world before time takes away the greatest gift we can have, FAMILY.

COMMUNITYNEWSLI Nassau County’s Non-profits Launch Innovative Partnership at ‘The Safe Place’

Black Long Islander Loses Appeal in White Teen’s Shooting

Nassau County’s primary domestic violence and child abuse agencies have partnered to provide a faster and easier path to life-changing resources for victims of abuse. The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect recently co-located into a single building, called The Safe Place. The Safe Place also houses the Child Advocacy Center of Nassau County, with representatives of the Nassau Police Department, Child Protective Services, County Attorney, Nassau University Medical Center and the District Attorney on site. “We have created a one-stop center to assist, nurture, and guide victims of child abuse, domestic violence, dating violence, and elder abuse, as they cope with trauma,” explained Sandra Oliva, Executive Director of the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Domestic violence and child abuse often occur together within a family, and The Safe Place will provide a holistic approach to helping victims. “The joint creation of the Family Violence Institute, shared services, expanded community outreach, and cross training of staff are just some of the programmatic and service benefits we have developed.” said Cynthia Scott, Executive Director of the Coalition Against Child Abuse and Neglect. The move marks the first time in the history of New York that a domestic violence and child abuse agency have partnered under one roof. The new tenants of The Safe Place anticipate that the co-location will not only enable them to deliver more effective services, but also allow them to cut costs while increasing space and resources, as social service organizations struggle for funding in tough economic times. The Safe Place will serve as a model for other agencies and communities. Victims of domestic violence, rape/sexual assault, or elder abuse should call the Nassau County Coalition against Domestic Violence’s 24-hour hotline at 516-542-0404. All child abuse should be reported immediately to the New York Statewide Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment at 1-800342-3720. In 2009, the agencies served approximately 4,000 victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Additional information about the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Coalition against Child Abuse and Neglect is available on the agencies’ web sites at www.cadvnc.org and www.ccanli.org, respectively.

A black homeowner dealing with a mob of white teens allegedly spewing racial epithets outside his home should have called police, not confronted them with a loaded pistol, an appeals court said as it upheld his manslaughter conviction in the death of one of the teens. The ruling by a State Supreme Court appellate panel of four judges rejected several legal arguments made by attorneys for

56-year-old John White. White was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the August 2006 killing of Daniel Cicciaro Jr. He also was found guilty of a weapons charge. He was sentenced to 2-to-4 years in prison, much less than the maximum of 15 years. He has been free on bail pending the appeal. One of his attorneys, Fred Brewington, said his client is disappointed by the decision and is weighing other legal options. It was not immediately clear when White’s bail status would be re-examined, Brewington said. Cicciaro and some friends had been feuding with White’s teenage son through cell phone messages when several carloads arrived outside the White home near midnight. Prosecutors conceded Cicciaro was intoxicated at the time. The conflict was further fueled by a bogus Internet posting claiming Aaron White wanted to rape a female friend of one of the white teens. White, who testified in his own defense, said Aaron awakened him around 11 p.m. to say the teens had left a party and were headed to their house in Miller Place, a predominantly white community on eastern Long Island. The construction worker, who testified that he grew up in Brooklyn hearing stories about how the Ku Klux Klan torched his grandfather’s business in Alabama in the 1920s, said he feared a similar attack was about to happen. He loaded a pistol and gave his son a shotgun and the two went to the end of their driveway

— a distance the court noted was 81 feet from their front door. Cicciaro was just 3 inches from the pistol when he was shot in the face, a medical examiner testified. White claimed the handgun accidentally discharged. "Cosidering all of these circumstances, there is thus ample support for the jury’s conclusion that a reasonable person in the defendant’s position, and with his background and experiences, would not have believed that the use of deadly physical force was necessary to prevent the teenagers from unlawfully entering or attempting to enter his home to commit a crime, and that the shooting was thus not justified," the appeals court ruled. White’s legal team also had argued the jury may have been coerced into a verdict because while it was deliberating on a Saturday night, Suffolk County Court Judge Barbara Kahn had asked if any of them had a religious obligation the following day. But the appeals panel said, "The mere fact that the trial court’s offer to accommodate religious obligations suggested that deliberations would continue the next day was not coercive and did not constitute error." Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said in a statement that he is "pleased that the court agreed with the prosecution that the defendant’s actions were not justified under our law and that this tragedy could have been avoided had Mr. White stayed inside his home and called 911."

The Secret Side of Anger

Expert Offers Tips on How Reducing Anger Can Make Your Personal and Professional Lives Better “You make me mad!” It’s a phrase that has crept into our daily conversations, but it’s actually a misnomer, according to one expert. “Most of us believe that other people or situations have the ability to make us angry. This is a big misconception,” said Janet Pfeiffer, author of The Secret Side of Anger (www.PfeifferPowerSeminars. com). “No individual or event has the power to make you mad. Anger is actually a choice, one that occurs depending on that person’s perception (thought). What we choose to think about an experience we’re having or the person we’re involved with determines how we feel. For instance, if someone criticizes you, you can think “She’s so mean!” Or, you can choose, ‘How unfortunate someone could be so insensitive.’ The former evokes anger, the latter, sadness. The truth behind her actions matters little. You only need to concern yourself with how you choose to perceive her and allow her behavior to affect you.” Pfeiffer, a certified violence counselor and motivational speaker, asserts that anger is

not inherently negative. It is an important and useful emotion that can be used as a motivating force to bring about positive change. If I witness an injustice in society, my anger can serve as a propellant to create new laws. Anger becomes a negative force when it is used in a destructive manner, either to hurt one’s self, another or to damage property. Unresolved anger leads to resentment and bitterness and can damage one’s relationships, health, careers, and overall enjoyment of life. Anger, by definition, is a feeling of distress brought about by feelings of helplessness or powerlessness. People create their own feelings of being victimized because they feel as though others are controlling them. We need to understand that power and control come from within. Each individual is responsible for choosing their own thoughts. No one else controls that. From there, everything else flows: thoughts generate emotion and we act out what we feel. Everything in this equation is about personal responsibility. A victim is one without power. Regaining our personal power eliminates feelings of helplessness and anger. Others no longer have the ability to push our buttons and make us mad. Her tips on reducing anger include: · Put everything into perspective. Ask yourself if the situation is worth getting upset about. If not, let it go. If it is important, identify what needs to change and create a plan to accomplish that. Switch your focus (thought) from the problem (negative) to the solution (positive). · The moment you feel anger well up inside you, remember SWaT: Stop, Walk and Talk. Stop what you are doing. This prevents the situation

·

from escalating. Next, Walk away. Creating distance allows you to calm down and cool off. “Out of sight, out of mind”. Third: Talk yourself calm. Discuss your feelings and situation with a neutral party, seeking deeper understanding and guidance. If no one is available, talk to yourself. Repeat calming statements such as “I am fine. I am calm. I can handle this is an intelligent

and rational manner.” Create a “Peace Plan”: daily activities to engage in that will naturally reduce your levels of anger. Some of my favorites are aerobic exercise, prayer, meditation, music, nature and my dogs. Each of these naturally replaces stress and anger with feelings of peace and serenity. Even a simple act such as deep breathing or smiling will help alleviate anger.

National AIDS Fund Announces Major Grants to Help Improve Access to HIV Care

The National AIDS Fund (NAF) announced today the awarding of major grants that will enable more than 35 community-based organizations to help improve access to care for people living with HIV/AIDS in five regions of the United States – Chicago, Ill., New York, N.Y., Oakland / San Francisco, Calif., and the states of North Carolina and Louisiana. The grant awards provide an opportunity for geographically and culturally diverse organizations within a region to combine their expertise in the development of community-driven solutions to help enable greater access to HIV/AIDS care and treatment. The community grants were made possible through a separate grant from Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) to NAF. In the United States, Bristol-Myers Squibb estimates that there are 640,000* people with HIV who are not receiving HIV treatment. Recognizing that there are personal, societal and structural barriers that may prevent people from accessing care, NAF and Bristol-Myers Squibb

entered into an unprecedented collaboration, which combines both financial resources and technical expertise to reach communities and to help facilitate changes to enhance access to care for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). This collaboration is one of the key components of Positive Charge, a Bristol-Myers Squibb initiative launched in December 2009 to help break down the barriers that prevent PLWHA from receiving HIV care, appropriate treatment and necessary support. The five major Positive Charge grants from NAF benefit geographically diverse communities that span the major epicenters of the epidemic as well as emerging areas of significant impact. Participating organizations in New York include: New York City AIDS Fund of the New York Community Trust, VidaCare, Primary Care Development Corporation, Harlem United, Housing Works, Project Samaritan, Promesa, St. Mary’s Episcopal Center, Village Care of New York.

POLITICS The National Coalition Partners with African American Clergy Network for Census Campaign Final Push for Census Participation Targets Black Community’s Hardest to Reach May 30, 2010 marked the first Sunday of The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation's (The National Coalition) monthlong push to encourage hard-to-reach residents in the black community to participate in the 2010 Census. The National Coalition's Unity Diaspora Coalition (UDC) has partnered with the National African American Clergy Network for the "Count on Me - Count Me In Census Campaign," a national initiative to stress the importance of participating in the census and urge church congregants who have not filled out a Census form to cooperate with census takers or call in their census forms immediately. Specially designed Census toolkits are being distributed to members of the faith community to prepare faith leaders to address questions related to the 2010 Census. "Census Sunday Toolkits" include a sample church bulletin, pulpit announcement, a "Prayer for a Fair 2010 African American Census Count," and an introductory letter signed by twenty prestigious clergy including Bishop Paul Morton,

Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., and Reverend Dr. Cheryl Sanders. The toolkits also provide information on how to identify legitimate census workers. "The Bible teaches that God and government are not in conflict," said Dr. T. DeWitt Smith, Jr., president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention and co-facilitator of the National African American Clergy Network. "We are promoting full participation in the 2010 census so that our communities receive critically needed resources and services that are based on the census." "We are encouraging clergy to make announcements in church bulletins, on websites, Facebook pages, Twitter, and other media available,” adds Dr. Barbara WilliamsSkinner, president of Skinner Leadership Institute and co-facilitator of the African American Clergy Network. The coalition is telling pastors to urge congregants who have not returned their form to cooperate with door-to-door Census workers or call the Census telephone questionnaire line to give answers over the phone. "People need to know that it's not too late to participate in the 2010 Census." The National Coalition's president and CEO, Melanie L. Campbell continues, "The Church has always played a defining role within the Black

community, and their overall reach is beyond measure. Our partnership with the National African American Clergy Network is a crucial element toward continuing to impact our communities. We know we can count on our faith leaders to make sure our community gets counted so that we get our fair share of billions of dollars." The UDC is an initiative of The National Coalition that brings together organizations representing the Black Diaspora. In addition to urging residents to mail in their completed Census forms, their goal is to demonstrate unity among Blacks, and to encourage the Black immigrant community to check the "Black" box on question nine of the Census form, and then write in their country of origin. The National Coalition's UDC has focused efforts on ten cities, which include Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Gary, IN; Houston, TX; Jackson, MS; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; New Orleans, LA; St. Louis, MO; and New York, NY. As part of the campaign, the UDC organized grassroots efforts that include the canvassing of neighborhoods in Jackson, MS; union volunteers gathering in Florida to visit members working at hospitals; and rallies and town hall meetings calling for the end of prison-based gerrymandering were held in New York. The

UDC participated in the Census Bureau's March to the Mailbox which organized thousands of volunteers in 6,000 neighborhoods across America to promote mailing in Census questionnaires. The UDC also launched the Poster & Social Media Competition targeting school-age children and young adults and challenging the youth to use their artistic talent to express why the Census is important to their community. The National Coalition Unity Diaspora Coalition partners include: The National Council of Negro Women, The Praxis Project, APRI, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, National Urban League, NAACP LDF, African Federation, Institute of Caribbean Studies, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, NAACP, National Conference of Black Mayors, UniverSoul Circus, Joint Center for Political & Economic Studies, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Black Youth Vote, Black Women's Roundtable, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, Center for Law and Social Justice and others. Governor Paterson’s Corner • Governor David A. Paterson announced that he is submitting legislation that will require everyone convicted of a penal law crime to provide a DNA sample. Due to a flaw in New York's current law, criminals who would otherwise be incarcerated based on a DNA match are free to commit additional crimes. • Unveiled a package of proposed amendments to New York's rent laws that would help to restore stability and certainty to a chaotic housing market. The amendments would modify and extend the State's rent laws – due to expire in 2011 – for eight years, reduce the rate at which apartments become deregulated, provide additional protections for tenants, and address a recent Court of Appeals decision that left many questions about the status of thousands of deregulated apartments. • Accepted the final report of the Police-onPolice Shootings Task Force. Established by Executive Order No. 23, the Task Force undertook a comprehensive examination of fatal and non-fatal police-on-police confrontations in order to better understand the dynamics of these confrontations, and to develop strategies to prevent future similar incidents. • Called on Congress to approve additional Federal funding to expand subsidized employment programs that are expected to put thousands of New Yorkers back to work. The success of New York's subsidized employment efforts were highlighted at the White House today as an employer from a Schenectady home improvement company joined Vice President Joe Biden to discuss the importance of these programs to the nation's economic recovery.

BUSINESS Black Business Works launched its first networking event in the Queens On May 27, 2010 Black Business Works launched its first networking event in the Queens area. Over 40 small business owners participated in the launch. Phil Andrews, President of the 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc. was the special guest speaker. The topic for the Breakfast meeting was "The Importance of belonging to a network". Sherise Patterson is the President of the Queens Division of Black Business Works. In 2004, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation reported that Black men and women are 50% more likely to start businesses than their white counterparts. The study also revealed that while millions of Black businesses are launched each year, many of those businesses fail. Entrepreneur Hanif Russell has seen this scenario of start-up and failure in the Black business community play out time and time again in his home state of New York, which also happens to lead the numbers in annual Black business startups. That’s why in December 2008, frustrated with the lack of support within the Black business community, Russell launched Black Busi-

ness Works. Russell says black business failure often occurs because there isn’t a strong business network that focuses on the needs of black-owned businesses. He founded Black Business Works to be that strong network black businesses need to succeed. Black Business Works facilitates the role of raising the awareness in the black community of black professional business services offered to the black community and beyond. The organization’s services are designed to help black businesses become financially sustainable and garner support from the black community. Russell believes if more money is spent with black-owned businesses, then black businesses will have a better chance for financial stability and business growth. The community spending approach has been utilized within other communities with much success, with Black Business Works we will see more Black businesses succeed. Visit www.blackbusinessworks.com for more information on upcoming events and to be placed on our mailing list for upcoming events.

The brand is ultimately planned to expand to retail stores nationwide as HDMD expands its product line. The HDMD line is being introduced globally during the 2010 NBA playoffs via a new, fully integrated, multi-media campaign handled by independent, urban-driven Hollywood production company Deon Taylor Enterprises (DTE). The launch effort includes numerous viral initiatives (including ring tones) as well as an upcoming launch event in Los Angeles. Esteemed writer/ director/producer Deon Taylor (“Chain Letter,”

Former NBA great and current ESPN/ABC personality, Mark Jackson, has launched a new basketball apparel line named Hand Down Man Down, with the acronym HDMD serving as the brand logo. The apparel line derives its name from Jackson’s signature catch phrase “Hand Down, Man Down,” which has become a part of popular basketball lexicon thanks to Jackson’s emphatic use of the phrase during NBA telecasts on ESPN and ABC. The witty phrase, used to describe a player capitalizing on an opponent’s defensive mistake, immediately struck a chord with the public and is now regularly heard both on and off the basketball court, along with his other signature phrase, “Mama, there goes that man!” HDMD is supporting the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, Autism Speaks, and will donate $1 of every t-shirt sale to help the organization fund global biomedical research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for autism; raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families, and society; and bring hope to all who deal with the hardships of the disorder. 8 NEW YORK TREND

“The Hustle,” “Dead Tone,” “Nite Tales”), who teamed with Jackson to develop the HDMD concept, is writing and directing the entire HDMD campaign, which will feature A-list actors, musicians and athletes. Many of the campaign's creative elements integrate a viral call to action for consumers to obtain ringtone downloads. There will also be downloadable wallpapers and images, as well as applications to send a friend a catch phrase message from Mark Jackson. Commented Jackson, “My job as an NBA analyst is to tell it like it is and bring insider knowledge and a bit of flare to NBA coverage. I’m just happy there is now proof that people listen to me! I could never have envisioned that my commentary would inspire an apparel line, but I think we have something special and unique here. It’s a very distinct line that captures the spirit of the game and the spirit of athletic competition in general. The

HDMD line will have a look for everyone.” Jackson added, “As a brand, we want to be socially responsible and believe in giving something back when provided the opportunity. It’s this belief that led us to the partnership with Autism Speaks, a truly amazing organization that does so much to address issues surrounding autism throughout the world. We feel good knowing that the brand’s success will directly benefit the ongoing studies to research and hopefully cure autism.” A number of the NBA’s biggest stars have pledged to support the apparel line in an effort to help battle autism. Jackson has already enlisted the support of former NBA stars Mitch Richmond and Byron Russell as well as other professional athletes including NFL player Ephraim Salaam of the Houston Texans. TV and online spots will air throughout the months of May and June, while the NBA playoffs are in full swing.

Atlanta, Georgia: Home of Two Noble Peace Prize Honorees

by Jim Weaver

Atlanta, Georgia, is the only city in the world where two winners of the Nobel Peace Prize are honored. The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. received the award in 1964 for his leadership role in the civil rights movement of the 1960’s. President Jimmy Carter was honored in 2002 for his work in bring peace to the Middle East. Today, both men are recognized here for their outstanding achievements. Jimmy Carter was raised on a peanut farm in Plaines, Georgia, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served as a nuclear submarine com-

mander before entering public life. He was elected the 76th Governor of Georgia in 1971 and ran a successful campaign for President of the United States in 1976 serving for a single term. Today, the Carter Presidential Library and Carter Center are major visitor attractions for tourists as well as residents of Atlanta and the surrounding area. In December 1980, a site close to downtown Atlanta owned by the State of Georgia was selected for the Carter Library. The facility design included not only the presidential library, but also privately maintained space, including President Carter's office, offices for foundations he supports, and the Carter Center of Emory University. During construction temporary quarters were lo-

cated in a former post office building in downtown Atlanta for the twenty-seven million pages of paper and other historical materials from the Carter presidency. Ground breaking was held on October 2, 1984. Construction costs for the entire facility were $26 million, raised by donations from friends of President Carter from around the world. The building was dedicated and the museum opened to the public in 1986. The research room was opened in a year later. In addition to many personal artifacts, the library features biographical information on Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and information about the Carter Presidential Administration. The Library continues to acquire material on the Carters, on major figures in the Administration and about the Carters' political or close personal friends. The Library is a popular destination for local student tour groups as well as adults and families from across the nation and world. The Carter Center (adjacent to the Library) is dedicated to creating a world in which every man, woman, and child has the opportunity to enjoy good health and live in peace. In partnership with Emory University, the Center is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating human suffering. Founded in 1982 by former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, it has helped to improve the quality of life for people in more than 70 countries. The Carter Center wages peace, fights disease, and builds hope by both engaging with those at the highest levels of government and working side by side with poor and often forgotten people. The Carters, now both in their eighties, continue to be active in the Center’s work. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born and raised in Atlanta and today is honored in several locations. There is the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site operated by the National Park Service and his birthplace, the King family home, located nearby also operated by the Park Service. There is also the Martin Luther King Center including a small museum and the grave site of Dr. King and his wife Coretta Scott King. The Center is operated by the King Family Foundation. Finally, there is the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church where Dr. King was minister, like his

father and grandfather before him. The historic church is currently undergoing extensive renovations and is closed to the public. The Ebenezer Baptist congregation has a new church building immediately across the street from its former home. Dr. King’s leadership in the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott in 1955, raised him to national prominence and lead to his creation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a major force in racial desegregation and the civil rights movement. On August 28, 1963, the largest protest demonstration in U.S. history occurred at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., where more than 250,000 blacks and whites gathered to lobby for passage of sweeping civil rights measures by Congress. Dr. King thrilled the crowd with his "I Have A Dream" speech. King’s life and work is remembered in video presentations, exhibits, and through informative guided tours conducted by knowledgeable National Park Service personnel. Small groups with reservations are able to tour King’s birthplace and family home with a Park Service guide. This is a particularly interesting tour and provides considerable insight into King’s childhood and youth and how it influenced his adult life. Ybor City, Tampa: New Life in the City’s Historic District by Jim Weaver At the turn of the 20th century, Tampa, Florida, was the “Cigar Capital of the World.” Ybor City, a section of Tampa located near the port, was the center of cigar manufacturing. High quality cigar tobacco was imported from Cuba and thousands of skilled workers hand rolled millions of fine cigars. Cigar smoking was popular and it was not until after the First World War that cigarettes became more fashionable. Gradually, over the decades, the cigar industry declined and what was once a prosperous part of the city declined with it. One by one the cigar companies closed and the community, once a vibrant center of ethnic culture (Italian, German, Spanish, and Cuban), deteriorated. Then came the interstate highway. In the 1960s, Route I-4 (connecting Tampa with Orlando and Daytona) was built through Ybor City eliminating much of its residential housing. In the past 20 years, however, Ybor City has made a spectacular comeback, and today it is once again an attractive, lively, welcoming community where locals and visitors can find a great mix of history, ethnic charm, and modern amenities. It is a popular dining and night life destination. Most famous is the Columbia Restaurant, in business since 1905, and featuring fine Spanish cuisine and Fla10 NEW YORK TREND

menco dancers. The food and service here are exceptional. For authentic Cuban food visitors will want to try the popular La Tropicana. There are many other fine restaurants including the Acropolis Greek Tavern and Samurai Blue Sushi & Sake Bar. While there are now three hotels in Ybor City, only one offers a taste of the Ybor’s glorious past. The Don Vincente de Ybor Historic Inn is a favorite for weddings, and many guests enjoy its charm and beauty, something often missing in modern hotels. Built in 1895, it was originally housed a land development company. It stood empty for several decades, before a multimillion dollar restoration brought back to its original glory. Today, the charming boutique hotel offers 16 guest rooms with elegant oriental rugs, ornate furniture, fourposter canopied beds, and white cast iron balconies. It is well located within an easy walk of restaurants, shops, and historic attractions and there is free parking on site. While Ybor is an interesting place throughout the year, several special events are major attractions -- Aficionado Days celebrates Ybor’s history as the “Cigar Capital of the World.” Cigar smokers from all parts converge on Ybor to enjoy some of the finest hand rolled tobacco to be had. Cigar making demonstrations are held and there are opportunities to learn about the finer points of cigar

selection and smoking. The upscale, two day event begins Saturday afternoon with a Tapas Trail visiting more than a dozen of Ybor’s fine dining establishments. This is followed by a Party Smoker at the historic Italian Club. Sunday brunch is held at the world famous Columbia Restaurant. There are a number of fine cigar shops in Ybor including King Corona, Tampa Sweethearts, El Sol, and Stogie Castillo, all offering a wide selection of fine cigars. Now in its 63rd year, the annual Ybor Fiesta Day is an exciting event that plays homage to the city’s great Spanish heritage. Here traditional Latin food, music, and dance are featured and thousands of tourists and locals find their way to Ybor to join in on the fun. La Setima or Seventh Avenue is closed to traffic and filled with food, fun and entertainment for the whole family. Events are scheduled through the day and evening and most are free. Halloween is a special holiday in Ybor City. It’s when the Latin style “Guavaween” celebration

Rolling a cigar in Ybor is held with parades, costumes, food, music, and great fun. Throngs of fun loving celebrants converge here to mark this special holiday. Guavaween Night of Costumed Revelry (think Mardi Gras) attracts a diverse crowd of many thousands. The event features live music on multiple stages by national and local artists, a not to be missed costume contest and the Mama Guava Stumble Parade. The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce. Learn more at <www.ybor.org> and <www.visittampabay.com>. NEWYORKTRENDONLINE.COM

MOVERS&SHAKERS Movers & Shakers Profile: Phil Andrews-President of 100 Black Men of Long Island Inc. By Darlene Aiken, New York Trend Long Island Editor Movers & Shakers are synonymous with the term “Trendsetters”, as these are individuals who we, that have a relentless drive for progress, intentionally follow their lead. They are going in a direction that is beneficial to all involved. They are usually ahead of their time, which also requires them having to tolerate those who do not understand their energy, strategy, or their passion. You see a trendsetter is one who bears the burden of being “different”. The characteristics of a trendsetter require a great deal of character, patience and knowledge, as well as the burden of fighting against those whose vision usually lacks clarity due to the false safety of redundancy. It is in this vein that Mr. Phil Andrews, President of the 100 Black Men of Long Island is selected to be inducted into The Movers & Shakers column. Founded in 1974, "The 100" serves as an international coalition focused on creating educational opportunities, promoting economic empowerment, addressing health disparities, and creating positive mentoring relationships. However, these are just some of

the things that Mr. Andrews was involved with before becoming President. Thereby, his position, now, is only a reflection of his life’s work. In addition to the aforementioned position, Mr. Andrews is an individual who wears many hats and debunks the cliché jack of all trades, master of none. He is a retired New York City Corrections Officer, Certified Mentor, astute Public Relations Professional, and Community Organizer throughout Long Island, and the five boroughs. His work continues to be recognized by many and this is evidenced by the fact that he is the recipient of numerous accolades which include, the Small Business Person of the Year award by two branches of the Nassau Council of Chamber of Commerce (Roosevelt and West Indian Chambers, respectively), a number of proclamations and citations from notable political officials. His work has been featured in multi-platform publications across the country as well as featured in "15 Years of Minority Business Development" by Mr. Robert Adams. Mr. Andrews is listed in Who's Who in Black America and International Who's Who. Raised by his role model, who is also his aunt

Phil Andrews in Brooklyn, New York, Mr. Andrews learned at an early age about the importance of community and education. He remembers as a child how his aunt Francis would gather other children within their community and take them to church and as well as community events to give back to the less fortunate in their community. Mr. Andrews is a graduate of one of the country’s most recognized schools for academic excellence, Brooklyn Technical High School; he

is a veteran, having served in both the United States Navy and Army Reserves, and attended York and John Jay Colleges. INYOUREAR Al. B. Sure Enough Loves Himself Some Omarosa Al B. Sure! “The Ultimate Merger” Interview with Kam Williams Albert Joseph Brown, III was born in Boston, Massachusetts on June 4, 1968 but raised in Mount Vernon, New York where he was the star quarterback on the high school football team. Still, he turned down a full scholarship to the University of Iowa to pursue his love of music under the alias Al B. Sure! In 1987, he was tapped by Quincy Jones as the winner of a Sony Records talent search and, found fame while still in his teens with the spectacular debut album “In Effect Mode” featuring numerous hits, including such instant R&B classics as Rescue Me and Nite and Day. Known for the velvety-falsetto on his romantic love songs, Al released other solo CDs while collaborating on duets with everyone from Diana Ross to David Bowie to Al Green over the course of a recording and producing career which has thus far netted the charismatic crooner numerous Grammy nominations as well as Soul Train and American Music Awards for Best New Artist. Currently, he is one of a dozen bachelors competing for the affections of Omarosa on The Ultimate Merger, a new reality series sponsored by Donald Trump. Here, Al talks about his life and about what it was like to be on the show which is set to premiere on TV One on Thursday, June 17th at 9 PM.

KW: Even being cooped up in a suite with 11 other guys? ABS: Not that part so much, because I’m a bit of a loner, even though they were great guys, and we established a brotherhood over the course of this journey. And still, in the back of everybody’s head was the competition. But we did our best to keep it as positive as possible.

Kam Williams: Hey, Al, thanks for the time. Al B. Sure: Don’t worry about it. How’re you doing today?

KW: And how was it to look at Omarosa romantically for the first time, instead of as a friend. ABS: You know what? She’s a very, very sexy woman. What more can I say? And sexy to me is not just the physical. I’m 42 now, so when you can sit down and have an incredible conversation with me, that’s the biggest turn-on, not the tightest jeans.

KW: Very well, thanks. How did Donald Trump interest you in competing for the affections of a controversial sister voted the #1 reality show villain of all time by the readers of TV Guide? ABS: I’ve known Mr. Trump since he hosted I think it was my 21st birthday party on his yacht years ago. He’s an amazing guy. And I’ve also known Omarosa for a few years. She’s always been just a really sweet and kind person, very different from what viewers see on television. I’ve always admired her because she’s such a smart go-getter, so we’ve always been friends. KW: Yeah, the first time I met her, I was struck both by how strikingly beautiful she is in person and by how different she is from the monster she’s been edited to look like on The Apprentice. ABS: Exactly! KW: But if you already know her, why go on a reality show to date her? ABS: It’s a cultural concession too the new media. I can’t live in the past. Part of this new media is this reality forum. So something you’d ordinarily do in private, you end up doing in public for all the world to see. Then it becomes much more interesting, especially how TV One has cast a great group of guys to compete for the prize, this very dynamic woman. What’s better than that? It makes for a very positive show. KW: I told my readers I’d be interviewing you, and the most common response I got from them was something like, “He’s more famous than Omarosa. Is this just a publicity stunt?” One even said, “Ask him, are you out of your mind?” given her reputation for being difficult. ABS: [Laughs] I received feedback like that myself. But like I said, I know the real Omarosa. She’s a friend, a dynamic woman, and a good person. I’ve been approached to do so many reality shows that I’ve turned down over the years. But being that this was Donald Trump, TV One and Omarosa, I thought this would be great. And you never know what might happen. KW: Did you enjoy the whole reality show process? ABS: Absolutely! NEWYORKTRENDONLINE.COM

KW: No spitting on each other, like the contestants on Flavor of Love. ABS: No, no spitting on each other, but we did challenge each other intellectually any time we bickered. KW: Weren’t the other contestants shocked and intimidated when they learned they’d be competing against Al B. Sure? ABS: To be very candid with you, their biggest surprise was when they came to realize that I was so down to earth, and that my door was always open to anybody who needed to talk. Despite the competition, I’m going to be your brother first. I have to be that way, because God has blessed me with the vehicle of music, the experience of life, and the spirit of discernment. So, of course, I feel responsible to share my gifts.

KW: Batala McFarlane asks, if you weren’t an entertainer, what line of work would you have pursued? ABS: I would probably have been an attorney or played football in the NFL, which was my initial dream. I love football to this day. KW: Documentary filmmaker Hisani Dubose says she loves your music and would like to know what you’re working on now. ABS: Currently, I’m pitching a production of my own television show. I can’t reveal exactly what it is, but I’ll be talking about it very soon. I also have a website, http://www.albsure.net/, and I’m hosting Slow Jams, the #1 morning radio show. You can find a link to it on my website. I’m on 7 days a week from 5 to 10 AM playing everyone from Beyonce’ to Marvin Gaye. Besides that, my latest album is called Honey, I’m Home. http://www. amazon.com/gp/product/B002935GM8?ie=UTF8 &tag=thslfofire-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789 &creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002935GM8 I’m trying to bring the romance back to music. Old school… Music is meant to be a part of your blood stream, and if it doesn’t affect your bloodstream, then you may as well put it back in the shoebox underneath the bed. My godfather, Quincy Jones, taught me that the melody comes from God, and it is what it is. At the end of the day, what you put into something is what you get out of it. KW: Attorney Bernadette Beekman says, in the event you succeed in your quest to woo Omarosa, how do you think your kids will react to having her as their wicked stepmother? ABS: [Chuckles] That’s not nice. I won’t answer that one. KW: Children’s book author Irene Smalls asks is this a show business move or an affair of the heart? I think you already answered that. ABS: [LOL] I love these questions. They’re funny. KW: Ila Forster wants t know what your feelings were while watching the MTV Sweet Sixteen seg-

ment that featured your son and Sean Combs? ABS: I’m not going to comment about that. I don’t discuss my family with the press; I discuss my family with my family. If you notice, when you hear something sensational in the press about me, I don’t respond to it publicly, because a lot of things are put out there simply for the attention. Things that are meaningful, you don’t need to talk about. KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would? ABS: Yeah, how are you doing Al? People, for the most part, forget to say, how are you? How do you feel today? It as if we’re robots or machines. I’m a human being just like you are. And I hurt and love just like everybody else, and people tend to forget that. I think I’m one of the friendliest celebrities around, because I’ll stop to talk to anybody who recognizes me. I don’t have a negative bone in my body. That’s why I could care less about any gossip. It doesn’t interest me. I’d rather sit down and write a song. KW: The Teri Emerson question: When was the last time you had a good laugh? ABS: With you just a minute ago. [Laughs] KW: The bookworm Troy Johnson question: What was the last book you read? ABS: The Art of the Deal by Donald Trump. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0345479173 ?ie=UTF8&tag=thslfofire-20&linkCode=as2&ca mp=1789&creative=390957&creativeAS IN=0345479173 KW: The music maven Heather Covington question: What are you listening to on your iPod? ABS: The last thing I listened to was a gospel duet by Fred Hammond and Brian McKnight called “When Will I See You Again.” It is an emotional song that really makes you sit down and reflect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAQjlBywYio KW: When you look in the mirror, what do you see? ABS: I see a gentleman getting a little older and a little wiser. KW: What is your favorite dish to cook? ABS: I enjoy preparing salmon. KW: What in life means the most to you? ABS: Right now, caring for my mother, who’s been diagnosed with cancer. She’s an ordained minister and my best friend. And watching her go through this process with the chemotherapy and everything has created more strength within me as a man. We’re going to beat it together. Don’t let anyone tell you God is good. Chicken is good. God is amazing! KW: The Ling-Ju Yen question: What is your earliest childhood memory? ABS: I was just having a conversation about that with my mother. I can remember way back in the day when my mother managed a dental office on Grand Concourse in the Bronx. I remember Phil Jackson, who was playing for the Knicks at the time, coming in for an appointment and bouncing me on his knee in the waiting room. He looked about 9 feet tall to me. KW: The Flex Alexander question: How do you get through the tough times? ABS: Prayer and encouraging words change things. We’re all human. We all go through stuff. The hardest part about being a celebrity is having to heal on a public stage. That’s the worst. Imagine going through a scandal, or a divorce, or a death in the family, and running into fans on the street. Because of where my heart is, my instinct is to put

my sadness aside, and give them a smile or a hug, no matter how bad I’m feeling. And the appreciation of fans can refuel your spiritual tank in those situations. But until you’re famous, people don’t realize how difficult that is. KW: Do you ever wish you could get your anonymity back. ABS: At times, because you might like to go out to have a meal and just chill. But I love people so much that I generally enjoy talking to everybody. KW: The Uduak Oduok question: Who is your favorite clothes designer? ABS: I like Armani, but I have a special affinity for Kamau Holloway, the head designer for Eclectic Denim. KW: If you could have one wish instantly granted, what would that be for? ABS: That hatred would disappear. KW: What advice do you have for anyone who wants to follow in your footsteps? ABS: To study different genres. You have too take from each artist what works for you, and then create your own sound. You put different combinations in the mix and it becomes something unique in the end. KW: I call it taking the best and leaving the rest. ABS: Come on! You got it! KW: How do you want to be remembered? ABS: As a man who was positive, who made a difference, and who walked in God’s light. KW: Thanks again, Al, and l hope to see at the premiere party at Trump Tower. ABS: I would hope so, my brother. To listen to Al B. ENTERTAINMENT The Many Shades of Jada, from TV Nurse to Karate Kid’s Mom

The “HawthoRNe: Season 2” Interview with Jada Pinkett Smith & Kam Williams Besides playing the title character on the TNT series HawthoRNe, which is starting its second season, Jada Pinkett Smith executiveproduces the show through her production company, 100% Womon. With her husband, Will Smith, she is serving as producer of The Karate Kid, starring their son, Jaden, and also of Fela!, the Broadway musical nominated for 11 Tony Awards. Jada’s recent film credits include Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, as the voice of Gloria, and director Diane English’s remake of The Women. In the past, she’s teamed up with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle in Reign Over Me, and enjoyed a pivotal role opposite Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx in Michael Mann’s Collateral. However, she perhaps remains best known as the take-charge Niobe of Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions fame. Here, Jada reflects on the challenge of balancing career and family when each member is a showbiz celebrity in his or her own right. Kam Williams: Thanks for the time, Jada. It’s nice to have an opportunity to speak with you again. Jada Pinkett Smith: Oh, thank you! KW: Well, first of all, let me say congratulations! You’re blossoming on every front. Let’s see, HawthoRNe’s starting its second season, you’re going t be on the cover of the July issue of Essence magazine, your Broadway musical has been nominated for 11 Tonys, and Jaden is starring in The Karate Kid, a picture you and Will produced. How does it feel? JPS: It feels good. These are the moments that you keep in your back pocket to remember, “All of those were good times!” [Laughs] KW: I told my readers I’d be interviewing you, and I think they often come up with better questions than I do. So why don’t I start right of with some of them. Lester Chisholm says, “Thank you for the production of Fela,” and asks, “What would suggest as a lifestyle to keep young entertainers focused?” JPS: Wow… Whew! Man, that’s a hard one, because part of the challenge of being young is finding what to be focused on. It’s a time of exploration when you have to discover who you’re not, in order to know who you are. I would say being deeply involved in the art world would help keep a young artist on track. Doing what you love, so that your focus is your artistry. KW: Reverend Florine Thompson and filmmaker Hisani Dubose had the same question: What is the key to balancing motherhood, marriage and such a successful career? JPS: Staying true to yourself, and being able to prioritize. It’s very important to prioritize. I know, for me, my family comes first. That makes every decision very easy. KW: Children’s book author Irene Smalls Are there any arenas left for you to conquer? JPS: [LOL] Definitely! And I’m always looking for them. But as I’ve gotten older, and now that my kids are starting to do what they do, I am now really focusing on sharing my knowledge and insights with them to help guide them 16 NEW YORK TREND

on their journeys. KW: Attorney Bernadette Beekman observes that you and Will come across as down-to-earth and very family-centric. She wants to know, how you keep your family values intact with the children becoming stars themselves? Do they have chores and an allowance? JPS: [Laughs] They definitely have chores, and they get an allowance from money they make, believe it or not. I think that critical to keeping them balanced is giving them purpose, and part of giving them purpose is allowing them to do things that they love to do, which is being part of this industry. And as wacky as that might seem, it allows them to contribute to the family, and it allows them to develop their own self-worth. And I feel that when a child has selfworth and purpose, that’s what keeps them grounded. KW: Cinema Professor Mia Mask asks, do you think the roles for women of color -- black women in particular -- have improved? JPS: I’d say they’ve improved, but there still aren’t enough. And I’d say that’s the case, not only for African-American women, but for all women in the Hollywood game. It’s just slim pickings, and a very challenging time for us. I think that’s why more of us need to work our way behind the camera in order to create roles that really illuminate who women are. We still have room for growth in that area, without a doubt. KW: Marcia Evans says that she’s a true fan of yours because she really respects the mature manner in which you approach being a wife and mother. She wants to know whatever happened to your TV sitcom "Good News." JPS: I never had a show by that name, but I did have one called “M.I.L.F. and Cookies,” that got picked up and was set to air until the network and I had a disagreement at the last minute. They

wanted to change the concept a bit in a way I wasn’t in agreement with, so we had to go our separate ways. KW: Is there any question no one ever asks you, that you wish someone would? JPS: I’m sure there is, but I really can’t think of one right now. KW: Larry Greenberg says Richmond, Virginia is a beautiful and unique choice for the setting of Hawthorne. Were you involved in that decision? JPS: We felt like Richmond was an area that’s growing, but hasn’t really been explored on television at all, in the way that New York, Los Angeles and Chicago have. So, we decided it would make a great location. KW: The Tasha Smith question: Are you ever afraid? JPS: Yes. KW: The Columbus Short question: Are you happy? JPS: I am happy. I have my moments when I’m not, but I am. I’m very happy. KW: The music maven Heather Covington question: What are you listening to on your iPod? JPS: Oh, I’m listening to so much right now. I looooove Alicia Keys’ new song, “Unthinkable.” I’m blasting that all over the place, but I’m also listening to Sade’s new album, and I always have my Heavy Metal, Mastodon. [LOL] KW: The bookworm Troy Johnson question: What was the last book you read? JPS: I’m reading a book right now by John Dewey called “Art as Experience.” http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039953 1971?ie=UTF8&tag=thslfofire-20&linkCode=a

s2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeAS IN=0399531971 That has been a very interesting read for me. JPS: Oh, man, when I look in the mirror, I see about a thousand different Jadas... Yeah… KW: What is your favorite dish to cook? JPS: I don’t really cook much. I’m more of a baker. My favorite things to bake that everybody loves, and I can only keep in the house for about ten minutes, are 7-Up cake and Pineapple Upside-Down cake. KW: The Teri Emerson question: When was the last time you had a good laugh? JPS: Oh, I laugh hard every day. I mean, my husband is Will Smith! [Shrieks] I’m telling you, that’s one of the joys of being married to him. My life full of laughter. Thank God I have him. My life is full of laughter because of that man. KW: How do you want to be remembered? JPS: I don’t know yet. I have no idea. KW: Well, thanks for another great interview, Jada, and best of luck in all your endeavors. JPS: Thank you, Kam. ONSTAGE The Quandary of Gladys' Dilemma By Deardra Shuler There was just as much excitement going on behind the scenes at the Harlem School of the Arts keeping the Hadley Players on pins and needles as there was in their latest offering “Gladys' Dilemma.” By the time all the confusion was sorted out the cast only had 12 weeks to learn their cues, lines, positions and to rehearse. Yet the show must go on and the show was up and running under the stage management of Sirlouis Jones and directorship of Ward Nixon for their May 28-June 20 run. Written by the 96-year-old Gertrude Jeannette (founder and CEO Emeritus of the H.A.D.L.E.Y. Players), Gladys' Dilemma features Valarie Tekosky (Gladys Perkins) who gives a believable performance as the troubled Gladys. The other cast members consist of Rodney Sheley (Leroy Perkins), Curtis L. Williams (Elsworth Perkins), Nzingtha Smith (Gail Perkins) and Colette Bryce (Margo Spencer). What would you do if your daughter told you she was pregnant and while you are happy for her there is a secret you have that is so consuming that you fear telling your family? This is Gladys' dilemma. Gladys and her husband Leroy are happily empty nesting preparing to go on vacation and enjoy the single couple lifestyle. Leroy is spending less and less time at his mortuary business gradually turning over the reins of the family business to his son. Gladys lives a carefree lifestyle going to fashion events, hair salons and masseuses with her upscale high society snotty best friend Margo. Colette Bryce has fun

with her character Margo turning up the 'bitchy meter' a full 100 degrees. Margo uses every opportunity to deliver a catty zinger to her friend Gladys who tolerates her long time friend with controlled humor. Life is good for Gladys who has no medical problems she knows of and then her doctor rocks her world. Gladys is pregnant at age 47. No one takes the news well, not Leroy, not Margo and not her daughter Gail who suddenly finds her own pregnancy being overshadowed by her mother's pregnancy. The idea of she and her mother delivering at the same time is too much to bear. The Perkins happy go lucky son Elsworth is the only one who thinks it’s good news. Gladys herself is so stunned she does not know what to do with the unexpected tidings. She faces a moral dilemma: if she opts to abort the baby is she a murderer? If she keeps the baby does she now face a medical dilemma, the risk of birthing a Down Syndrome child. Then there is the age factor. Her husband is already in his early 50s and has been looking forward to being free of children and the responsibility of raising kids. He is looking forward to early retirement and the honeymoon he missed when he and Gladys first started off in life together. The idea of starting over terrifies him. Rodney does a competent job portraying Gladys' concerned husband as does Curtis L. Williams as their ebullient son. Time is running out. Does Gladys terminate or keep the baby? The answer may become the audience’s dilemma. This reviewer went to see the show on the third day of its performance so the play had not quite found its footing and was still in need of

tightening up. Given the amount of time the cast and crew had to pull the production together this may be remedied by plays end. Yet the subject matter is an important issue. One which some women who initially chose careers over starting a family have come to an age where family supersedes career. In 2008 alone there were more than 106,000 live births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and 7,666 live births to women 45 to 54. Many who had normal and healthy births. However, the incidence of Down Syndrome is estimated at 1 per 800 to 1,000 births and is statistically more common in older mothers.

Costume designer June Terry did an outstanding job with the costumes which were truly stylish and beautiful. Meredith L. Waddy did a wonderful job with lighting particularly during the dream sequence. Among the audience was veteran actress and Oscar nominee Ruby Dee who is a big supporter of the Hadley Players productions. “Gladys' Dilemma” is being housed at the Harlem School of the Arts, located at 647 Nicholas Avenue (off 142nd Street) in Manhattan. Interested parties can call (212) 368-9314 or visit the Hadley Players website at www.hadleyplayers.com for tickets.

FILMSTRIP Documentary Highlights How Harlem Charter School Offers Hope for Salvation The Lottery Film Review by Kam Williams For most young folks from the ghetto, getting a good education has a lot to do with whether or not they ever make it in life. That’s why a kid’s name has to be picked out of a hat in order to gain entry to Harlem Success Academy, a charter school whose students are beating the odds. So many parents in the community have become painfully aware that their offspring’s prospects are likely to improve dramatically upon admission to this collegeoriented institution that 5,000 of them pack a local armory annually to see who wins the lottery allocating the coveted spots opening up for the coming year.

The elementary school was founded by Dr. Eva Moskowitz on the guiding principle that “children are capable of achieving an incredible amount.” And those high expectations have paid off with 90% of her pupils performing at or above their grade level, as compared to the 35% average in the district, consequently the universal desire to matriculate there. Directed by Madeleine Sackler, this tearjerker of a documentary chronicles the diverging fates of four families whose desperate hope for the next generation, sadly, seems to rest with the possibility of attending Harlem Success Academy. While we get acquainted with each of the kids, the film allocates equal time to allow luminaries like Dr. Geoffrey Canada, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein and former Essence Ed-

Get Him to the Greek: Movie Review by T.A. Moreland The music industry is in decline. Sergio Roma (Sean Combs) a record company owner lectures his staff on the need to come up with something fresh and big for their sakes. While Sergio is financially secure, his staff’s jobs are in jeopardy if they don’t start delivering. Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) reminds Roma of the 10 year anniversary of British rocker, Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) performance and live album situation in L.A. Green’s suggests a reunion event. Roma decides to go for it and assigns Green to get the aging, distrustful, and whacked out Snow in London and bring him to the U.S., first to New York for an appearance on the Today Show and then to L.A. for the concert. Green is excited about the assignment but the timing is not good. He and his live in girlfriend either have or have not broken up depending on which of them you ask. Snow is willing to come to the America but on his own terms which mean doing drugs, having sex and taking any other detour he feels necessary. Green is constantly torn as to where to the draw the line which of these activities he should also participate in while desperately trying to keep Snow on schedule. Get Him to the Greek tries to capture the success of The Hangover a 2009 film about bachelor trip to Vegas in which the groom and the groomsman wake up in their hotel suite with a baby and a wild animal and on them missing and they have to retrace the night before to find out what happened. The Hangover cost $35 million to make but earned over $400 million internationally. I have never found films about the drug - rock star scenario that interesting. Much of Get Him to the Greek is funny and well written but it’s not a genre that I find worth going to the theater to see. As a result, I give this film a Rent It rating. Jonah Hill and Russell Brand are perfect in the lead roles. In fact the entire cast proffers strong performances. Sean Combs seems right at home as the record company mogul. Get Him to the Greek is one hour and 49 minutes and is rated R for strong sexual content and drug use throughout, and pervasive language. There is no rush to Get Him to the Greek wait and Rent It. The Town Hall and Con Edison presented Black History Month Poster and Essay Contest awards to five New York City public elementary school children at a special ceremony at The Town Hall, on May 26. The students’ outstanding essays and art posters were inspired by the 2010 Black History Month performance of the acclaimed Brooklyn based dance troupe, Urban Bush Women, led by artistic director Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and sponsored by Con Edison and Town Hall. Approximately 4,500 New York City public school students from grades 3 – 8 attended the February performance and were invited to submit either a poster or essay expressing what they learned. The art poster winners were: Keiron Montgomery, third grader at PS 811 @149 in Manhattan; Kayla Toiga, fifth grader at PS 199 in Brooklyn and Subrina Rafiq, sixth grader at PS 50 in Queens. Imani Johnson, sixth grade, IS 229 in the Bronx and Markida Fortune, fourth grade, PS 25 in Brooklyn won for their essays. Teachers, parents, and friends joined the winners, who were presented with award certificates and cash prizes by Marvin Leffler, President, The Town Hall: Larry Zucker, Executive Director, The Town Hall and Alton S. Murray, Manager of Strategic Partnerships, Con Edison. The program also featured the award winning essays and posters showcased in an exhibition. “Every year we receive incredibly creative, sophisticated artwork and essays from these kids,” says Marvin Leffler, President of The Town Hall. “It is extraordinary to see how they express what they’ve learned at the show. Working with Con Edison has expanded the opportunities for The Town Hall to offer this type of entertainment and learning experience to thousands of school children, none of whom were asked to pay for their seat.” Con Edison has sponsored the festival at The Town Hall since 1997. Both organizations continue their commitment to bringing quality entertainment to grade school children in an effort to illustrate the importance of Black History Month. NEWYORKTRENDONLINE.COM

EMBRACEYOURINNERBEAUTY SMALL BUSINESS CAMP TEACHES URBAN GIRLS HOW TO MAKE PRETTY PROFITS THIS SUMMER NEW YORK, June 18, 2010-Inner Beauty Solutions, Inc. ® continues its long-standing quest to empower girls to realize the importance of procuring and maintaining a balanced self-esteem, in all that they do. This summer, Ms. Darlene Aiken, President/CEO of Inner Beauty Solutions, Inc. ® partners with Mr. Andrew Morrison, President of Small Business Boot Camp to assist girls in taking their ideas and turning them into profit by way of starting their own summer jobs. According to the Daily News, “The city’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.6% in May. But for teens, the rate is nearly four times as high: 35.9%. The City Department of Youth and Community Development’s Summer Youth Employment Program can only hire 25,000 teens, down from that of 52,255 from last summer.”

"Inner Beauty Solutions' partnership with Mr. Morrison grows out of a shared commitment of recognizing the importance of empowering girls to become self-sufficient adults, while all along believing in themselves every step of the way. In addition, we not only want the girls to have a memorable and lasting experience, but we want each young lady to leave this powerful event with information that can be applied immediately," says Darlene Aiken, President/CEO of Inner Beauty Solutions, Inc. (r) "With over 3,000 high school students dropping out each day, I wanted to use entrepreneurship as a way to motivate teens to stay in school. There is also an increase in criminal

activity during the summer months. I hope to encourage young people to focus their attention on legitimate business activities," said Andrew Morrison, President of Small Business Camp. Latasha Fountaine from Central Islip High School said, “I am very interested in learning how to become an entrepreneur as I always dreamed of opening my own business so this sounds like a place where I can learn the basics.” “When I first heard of Darlene Aiken and Inner Beauty Solutions and how she wanted to mentor the youth I felt this was something needed. Darlene had taken my daughter under her wing, she listened to her and encouraged her dreams and goals. She was instrumental in helping her share her experiences which helped her achieve scholarships and recognition from her peers, teachers, and community. Darlene serves as a beacon of light to young people. She provides guidance, confidence, and empowerment through

her dedicated and never-ending efforts and example. She has taken her blessings and accomplishments and unselfishly brought them back to young people. I pray God continue to keep and bless Darlene Aiken as she’s truly a blessing to us. It really does take a village to raise a child,” says Mrs. Regina Spencer, Parent. The Particulars: WHAT: Inner Beauty Solutions, Inc. ® and Small Business Camp partners to teach urban girls how to turn their passion into “Pretty Profits” for the summer. WHY: According to Ann Dryden Witte, Florida International University, Wellesley College, and National Bureau of Economic Research states that family disruption, drugs, limited economic opportunities, and unoccupied and unsupervised youth are all found to be associated with urban crime. Therefore, in an effort to work toward lowering the statistics with regard to the aforementioned, Mr. Morrison and Ms. Aiken have partnered to effect change with urban communities. DADS&GRADS President Obama Launches Next Phase in Fatherhood Efforts with the President’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative President Obama spoke in Washington, D.C. to discuss the importance of responsible fatherhood and mentoring to build healthy families and communities. At the event, the President announced the next steps in his longstanding agenda on fatherhood and personal responsibility: The President’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative. The Initiative will continue the President’s effort to impact father absence in America through partnerships with fatherhood and family-serving groups and role models around the country. The Initiative is a national call to action to address fatherlessness in America and includes the following steps: • The White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the Office of Public Engagement will continue to host community forums on fatherhood and personal responsibility around the country, in concert with local groups. The next forum is scheduled for New Mexico on August 10. • Organizations supporting the Initiative will reach out to communities and individuals around the country. Individuals who sign up for the Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative will receive e-newsletters featuring articles, tips and resources from prominent leaders in the fatherhood and family fields and information about model programs. • Organizations supporting the Initiative will work in specific ways to have a cultural impact on responsible fatherhood, from local forums with the National Parent Teachers Association to community trainings by the National Fatherhood Leaders Group (NFLG). Partners from the National PTA to the head of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities have signed up to advance the President’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative in communities around the country. In addition, as the President has said, while no government program can remedy the problem of father absence in America, government must do its part to help fathers facing challenges. President Obama has proposed a new Fatherhood, Marriage and Families Innovation Fund that will scale up effective fatherhood and family-strengthening programs across the country. And recognizing that the best leg up for any family is a good job, the President has also provided funding through the Department of Labor for transitional jobs programs for noncustodial parents facing barriers to employment. Last year, the President launched a national conversation on fatherhood and personal responsibility, and members of his Administration reached out across the country to hear from fathers and their families about the challenges they face. Over the last year, Administration officials held events across the country including a discussion with Secretary Duncan in New Hampshire about the link between fatherhood and educational achievement; Secretary Locke talked to fathers in California about balancing the needs of their families with the demands of their jobs; Secretary Shinseki held a town hall for military and veteran dads in North Carolina; and Attorney General Holder traveled to Georgia for a forum about fathers in our criminal justice system.

Celebration of Black Fathers Week

It was standing room only with over 200 guests attending the Celebration of Black Fathers' Week Kickoff at York College. It was an evening of song, spoken word and the acknowledgement of fathers who are exemplary role models presented by Assemblyman William Scarborough, Honorary Chair of the Million Fathers Club and Derek Phillips, Executive Director and Founder of Real Dads Network. The Master of Ceremonies was Fatiyn Muhammad, producer for KISS FM Open Line and Rev. Al Sharpton' Hour of Power. Rev. Edward Davis, Senior Pastor of Presbyterian Church of Saint Albans gave a powerful invocation. Cosponsoring the event were York College Male Initiative Program, United Black Men of Queens, Alpha Phi Alpha-Zeta Zeta Lambda Chapter, Million Fathers Club and Celebrating Real Family Life. Donations which helped to provide food and refreshments were made by Poor Freddie's Tire Center.

When Scarborough found out that children who have their fathers involved in their lives, whether they live with their children or not, are much more successful in every aspect of their lives, he said it prompted his support of efforts to encourage, motivate and address the need of black fathers being a positive presence in their children’s' lives. Scarborough presented Community Father Awards to participants in the One in A Million Essay Contest. Children were asked to write an essay on why their father was one in a million and had the opportunity to read

Lehman Center Plans a Michael Jackson Tribute Extravaganza By Deardra Shuler No matter what one personally thinks of Michael Jackson there is no denying he was a musical genius the likes this world will never see again. Not because there aren't or won’t be other geniuses to follow but because he was unique unto himself. He was aloof yet caring having donated numerous amounts of money to charities. There is a price to pay for genius in this world because it sets one apart and puts one in the position of being original in a world that is trapped into a programmed mindset that seeks to attack or tear down those who stand above the status quo. Michael Jackson was an original; a child man who maintained a degree of innocence so that his art form tapped into a untethered purity imbued with wonderment and imagination. Because his heart was so pure it could not withstand the cruel accusations and betrayals of those who sought to see his love for children as something vile or his whitened skin as something more than his affliction with the disease Vitiligo. King Michael had the Midas touch when it came to music, dance and fashion and he was an astute businessman as well. Once on stage, Jackson was thrilling and mind blowing. The seventh child of the Jackson family, Michael debuted with his brothers as part of the

Jackson 5 in the mid 1960's until he went solo in 1971. He went on to become an immense figure in the entertainment business obtaining crossover appeal for his records and videos like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It” and “Thriller.” In fact, “Thriller” is the best selling album of all time with “Off the Wall,” “HiStory,” “Bad” and “Dangerous” a close second. Michael captured 13 Grammy Awards, 13 No. 1 singles in the U.S., 26 American Music Awards and held the distinction of “Artist of the Century” and “King of Pop.” Mr. Jackson sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide. MJ Impersonators Michael Firestone, Pete Carter and 11-year-old Ivan Kelly will be depicting the various stages of Michael Jackson's career at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, located at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West, the Bronx, on Saturday, June 26th (the day after the anniversary of Michael Jackson's passing on June 25, 2009 due to cardiac arrest) in tribute to Michael Jackson: The King of Pop. “This is a never seen before or again production. It will be like no other. We have allstar dancers performing unbelievable dance numbers to Jackson's many songs. We will have the GospeLive choir doing harmonies. There will be Djs, percussionists, video jockeys

and of course our three well respected Michael Jackson impersonators and tribute artists,” said Steve Love the producer. “We plan on a few surprises. This will be an extravaganza. Tickets are going fast so get them early,” continued Love. Child prodigy Ivan Kelley (aka Lil’ Man) is reminiscent of a young Michael Jackson. As a result of Kelley's appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, he was invited to tour with hip hop artist Akon. “It's very rare to find a young person whose voice is so similar to the young Michael. I like to think that Michael would be very proud of these impersonators who pay tribute to him,” remarked the show producer. “I am working on the dance tributes to Michael. We will be doing many of his popular routines,” said Pete Carter who met Jackson several times. “I have been to Neverland and visited Michael in L.A., when he was rehearsing the “This Is It” London concert. I've been impersonating him for 10 years. I last saw him in April 2009. Michael was such a sweet person. He truly loved his fans and took the time to sign autographs whenever asked. In fact, he signed his signature on my back and I immediately had it permanently tattooed there. Michael was excited about doing the “This Is It” concerts. He was feeling good although he was

thinner than I had ever seen him before. I felt his bones when we hugged and this surprised me. I look forward to performing at Lehman Center because everyone wants to truly honor Michael as the great “King of Pop'” said the renowned MJ impersonator. Interested parties can call the Lehman Center Box Office at 718-960-8833 or go online at www.LehmanCener.org for tickets.

Acappella Singers Are Helping Preserve Black History

by Jim Weaver

Black history is not something confined to the Underground Railroad or the civil rights movement of the mid-20th century. The music of African Americans has a rich history from early gospel and spirituals to contemporary jazz and hip hop. During the 1940s several popular acapella singing groups -- The Delta Rhythm Boys, The Ink Spots, and The Mills Brothers helped to pave the way for an explosion of black (and some white or mixed) male and female singing groups of the 1950s and 1960s. The best acapella groups came from the neighborhood street corners of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. Some went on to be famous while others were one hit wonders. I was attending college in Ohio in the early 1950s and recall first hearing doo wop on late night radio from Cleveland. At that time most stations would not play “Negro” music, although recordings by a few black singers, Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis, were popular. Many white listeners did not know they were black. Recently, I was fortunate to hear the acapella doo wop group Nu Millennium perform live and to learn they had opened for such well known groups as The Drifters, Duprees, and Delfonics, Temptations, Limelites, Persuasions, and Dells. Performing regularly in the greater New York area and beyond, Nu Millennium is bringing vocal harmonies to a whole new generation, and helping to preserve an important part of Black history in America. Originally named The Playboys, the group began in 1968 in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of 22 NEW YORK TREND

Brooklyn. Michael Robinson and Robert Powell and some mutual friends began singing together in the style of The Temptations. “We listened to their records and watched them perform on television until we knew every note, every part, and every dance move,” Michael recalls. Good enough to appear at the Apollo Theater amateur show, the Playboys began to expand their repertory to cover songs by Smoky Robinson, the OJ’s, Skylarks, and Brooklyn based Jive Five. “We even had a chance to be the first black acapella group to record for RCA,” Michael said, “but our agent at the time dropped the ball and it never happened.” The Playboys broke up in the late 1970s, but Michael and Robert continue to sing. “I remember singing with an Italian group from Long Island City, but have forgotten the name,” Michael said. “There were lots of one night gigs with many different performers both amateur and professional, but we never sang regularly again with any groups” In 2004, the NY Metropolitan Transit Authority began a program in which musicians performed at subway stations around the city. Having watched many former doo wop groups perform on the PBS television, they began to realize there was still a market for a cappella singing. Robert Powell and Lenny Cornish decided to audition and invited friends Michael Robinson and Henry Grant to join them. They needed a name and Nu Millennium seemed to work well. “The music style may be old, but our group is strictly 21st century.” Michael said. “At the MTA audition, we sang the old Smokey Robinson classic “Oh, Baby, Baby.” and we won.” One day performing in the subway, someone approached them and asked it they would perform at a party they were planning. That was the start of a new career.

(left to right) Lenny Cornish - tenor and lead, Robert Powell - bass/baritone, Michael Robinson - tenor, Henry Grant - 2nd tenor.

For booking information contact --booking@ numillenniumonline.com. Nu Millennium continues to sing in the MTA subways, but they also filmed an episode for ABC television’s “Six Degrees “and were featured on NBC’s Today Show, and an off-Broadway musical. The group now performs at regularly major club venues, weddings, parties, corporate events and benefits throughout metropolitan New York City and as far away as Boston and Washington. Michael tells of showing up for an event and people in charge asking where their instruments were. “They thought we were a band, but were delight when they heard us sing,” he said. “Who needs a band?” The group has a basic 26 song repertory, but they can also customize a performance from over 300 selections. While they sing mostly doo wop classics like The Drifter’s This Magic Moment and Under the Boardwalk, they also sing Beetles songs and Broadway show tunes.

It takes practice and when they are not performing Nu Millennium practices three night a week. What about the dance routines, I asked. “They’re all routines the Temptations used that we memorized years ago,” Michael says. “Of course, we’ve added our own thing here and there.” Nu Millennium has a CD recording available from its website <www.numillennium.com> A new recording is in the works for release later in 2010. It includes several pieces composed by group members. Nu Millennium prides itself on not being tied down to one genre of music or musical style, but instead represent a mixture of styles heavily influenced by doo wop, Motown and classic soul carefully preserved for a new generation to discover and appreciate. While preserving an important part of Black music history, Nu Millennium is finding lots of new fans on Facebook and YouTube. Check it out.

SPORTS FIFA World Cup 2010: South Africa‘s Moment to Shine By Clyde R. Davis

The spotlight of the world is now glowing brightly on The Republic of South Africa. The finest soccer players on the planet will convene in that country on a variety of world-class soccer facilities, all seeking that elusive title, “Best Football Team in the World.” Four years ago South Africa came very close to earning the right to host the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In the end, Germany beat them to it by 12 votes to 11 and went on to host a wonderful tournament, leaving the South Africans deflated, but nonetheless accepting the agonizing defeat with grace. Quietly and with renewed vigor and determination, South Africa’s bid committee dusted themselves off and in December 2002 notified FIFA of their intention to bid for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. South Africa’s message was simple but powerful. It had the best stadium facilities in Africa; many already in existence, some to be upgraded, and some new. It had a strong commercial backing from leading international corporations, the continent’s largest and most stable economy, a sophisticated media and broadcast industry and a huge South African support base from its millions of citizens. South Africa’s Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and FW de Klerk were mobilized to secure support for South Africa’s FIFA World cup bid, which President Thabo Mbeki embraced as part of Africa’s renaissance strategy. African superstars Abedi Pele, George Weah, Roger Milla, Kalusha Bwalya and Philemon Masinga, were used as the 2010 Bid Ambassadors, and Lucas Radebe, Jomo Sono, Ace Ntsoelengoe, and Gary Mabbutt as Bid Supporters. South Africa made its final presentation to FIFA’s Executive Committee on the eve of the May 15th vote. Nelson Mandela spoke of South Africa’s “committed and dedicated team” and President Mbeki passionately spoke of how “Africa’s time had come.” On May 16th at 21 minutes pass noon, FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter opened a white envelope revealing South Africa as the proud 2010 FIFA World Cup hosts. The World Cup has opened a number of doors for entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and support the South African economy as well. One such company is Maverick Business Adventures. Founded by Yanik Silver, MBA is built on out-of-the-office experiences and high level business connections with an emphasis on philanthropy and “giving forward” to the next generation of young entrepreneurs. Capitalizing on the allure of South Africa, the centerpiece of the adventure is The World Cup of soccer which occurs once every four years, and has never been held before on the African continent. MBA guests will enjoy premiere VIP access to a semifinals match in Cape Town and the Finals on July NEWYORKTRENDONLINE.COM

11, 2010 in Johannesburg. Members will get to hang out with top U.S. soccer icons during part of the game for insight into what’s really happening on the field and in the heads of these worldclass athletes. ‘As part of our long range vision, MBA has set a goal to positively impact one million young and aspiring entrepreneurs ages 13-25 by the year 2020, through live and online learning, incubators, start-up funding and mentorship, “ said Yanik Silver. “It’s this unique “giving forward” aspect that many members love the most. The benefits from impacting just one student are immeasurable.” Africa investor (Ai) a leading international investment research and Communications Company recently held a prestigious 2010 Africa Investor Tourism Investment Summit. The Summit converged over 400 delegates and over 70 diverse high-level speakers from both business and government. The summit was opened by H.E. Robert Mugabe, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and attended by leading Ministers, including those responsible for economic planning, finance, mines, transport and infrastructures development, energy, environment, natural resources, and state enterprises to name a few. In the dynamic Ministerial session, Ministers from across Africa including Zambia, Namibia, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, and Ghana, engaged in dynamic discussions about how the 2010 World Cup will boost tourism, across the continent, and discussed coordinated branding and regional tourism promotion. The Summit also provided an opportunity for investors and financiers to listen to a carefully selected group of developers and government representatives pitched their tourism and infrastructure investment projects. African-Americans are also getting onto the playing field at the World Cup. Businesses like Lion House Communications run by Kenneth Walker. His Johannesburg firm helps companies deal with crises and manage public relations campaigns. Another firm, Diversity Restoration Solutions, invites small and minority business in the U.S. to attend the 2010 Africa Business Conference in Baltimore, Maryland June 22-24, 2010. They will provide more information about how to do business in Africa, finding existing opportunities and networking with other companies from the U.S. and Africa looking to build real-time trade and commerce relationships. For the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee (OC), the FIFA World Cup must be more than a success, hosting the event must have long-term legacy benefits for South Africa and in fact Africa. Of course infrastructure and economic legacy is important but a social legacy is just as vital. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will only be successful if the youth of South Africa benefit. This is why the work of the ambassadors is so important. The ambassadors, through their work at coaching clinics around the country, have been

focusing on youth development in football. The thinking behind this is that through promoting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and football in general, more youngsters will become players, increasing the pool of talent for the leagues and national team while at the same time providing a constructive pastime for the young people. It’s about improving the lives of the youth through football. The ambassadors are: Kalusha Bwalya, Desiree Ellis, Mark Fish, Doctor Khumalo, and Phil Masinga. As it has been observed in past events of this magnitude, some activities related to hosting of the FIFA World Cup have had a negative impact on the environment. The Green Goal program is thus aimed at identifying potential impacts, avoid or minimize the impacts where possible and compensate or offset unavoidable adverse impacts. Major developments such as stadiums and transport systems can have huge negative impacts on the environment if no mitigation measures are introduced during planning and implementation phases of projects. The South African Organizing Committee has committed itself to adhere to sustainability principles and to promote environmental responsibility in organizing and hosting the 2010 tournament. There can be no World Cup Tournament without World Class Music! FIFA and Control Room, a leading producer of global music events have put together an all-star line-up to perform at the Kick-Off Celebration Concert. Billed As the greatest entertainment show to date in Africa, it will feature performances by Alicia Keys, Amadou & Mariam, Angelique Kidjo, Black Eyed Peas, BLKJKS, John Legend, Juanes, Shakira, The Parlotones, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Toure, and Vusi Mahlasela. This historic music event will take place in front of a capacity stadium audience of 30,000, and will be broadcasted to hundreds of millions more worldwide. The sponsors for the South Africa 2010 World Cup are Budweiser, Continental, MTN, Castrol, McDonalds, Adidas, Emirates, Sony, Coca Cola, Hyundai, and Visa. Many of the top players have deals with some of these sponsors as well as many others. They have left the details of their sponsorship deals to their business managers, agents and attorneys. There is a very good possibility that the World Cup will increase the economic growth of

the country. However there are some who say there is no guarantee that such benefits will filter down to the poor. The rate of inequality between rich and poor has grown at an alarming rate to the point that South Africa now has the highest rate of inequality in the world! All the people of the country are therefore challenged to develop a system that will enable everyone to benefit from such economic growth, not just the rich elite! Sport -like war- has an amazing capacity to pull a country together, and there is no doubt that this international happening will do just that for South Africa during the 2010 World Cup. While there are opposing feelings and attitudes amongst South Africans towards hosting the Tournament, the fact that it is a fait accompli requires a positive approach to the event. No-one can deny the wonderful opportunity that the World Cup presents for building global unity and solidarity, breaking down barriers between nations, and for building friendships that transcend traditional prejudices. As a Christian, for whom the quest for justice and peace transcends all other motivations and passions, we are actively promoting the noble objective of the World Cup. But we also need to be highlighting the risks and threats to the achievement so that all ordinary people become aware of them, and in so doing, that the authorities are challenged to address them. In my estimation the winner of the 2010 World cup will be: ARGENTINA. MUSIC TO MY EARS: THE CHANTS OF “BEAT LA” & “BOSTON SUCKS” THE HISTORICAL RIVALRY IS RENEWED AS THE BOSTON CELTICS & THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS MEET IN THE 2010 NBA FINALS BY ZENA M. GRAY The NBA’s two most decorated franchises and ancient bitter rivals met once again for the National Basketball Associations Finals series 2010. The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers have grown their rivalry over 50 years. From 1959-2008, the Celtics and Lakers met in the NBA Finals 11 times, with Boston taking the titles early and most often. On June 3rd, the two contenders began Round 12. The rivalry began in 1959 when Bob Cousy, Bill Russell and the rest of the Celtics swept Elgin Baylor’s Minneapolis Lakers, starting an unmatched run of eight straight titles and 10 championships in 11 years. Seven of those 10 Boston titles were against the Lakers. The Celtics have seventeen; the Lakers now have sixteen – championship banners that hang from each franchise’s rafters. The two teams make up for 33 of the 64 championships in NBA history. An unheard of sports statistic: Fifty percent of the times either the Boston green or the Los Angeles purple have taken home the golden trophy as the final seconds ticked off the clock of the NBA finals. On June 17, the Lakers took home the most recent championship victory. The frenzied fans of LA or Boston both claimed “their” team would be the one to seize the league’s grand prize. This was the team’s fifth meeting in the finals since Magic Johnson and Larry Bird revitalized this storied rivalry back in 1984. Since that historic first meeting of the most famous players to ever wear their teams jerseys (Magic and Bird), the two franchises are tied at two championships a piece against one another. The Celtics captured the

crown in ’84 and ’08 while the Lakers celebrated in ’85 and ’87. Funny thing is no one even saw this renewed rivalry coming, considering neither team had stellar seasons and face tough opponents in the first two rounds to even reach the big dance. Everyone seemed to watch the series and never have I ever witnessed so much animosity between fans. Well not just now, this is how it has always been between these teams. In one interview, Celtics forward Paul Pierce said “I think that rivalry really revolutionized the game of basketball,” I couldn’t have said it better myself. It was more than that, though. The back-andforth regular-season games were appointment television, the eyes of the two teams forever focused on each other. The rivalry went national, with neutral fans often choosing sides; everything from geography, style of play and race-dividing loyalties.

The finals however are different; a sped-up version based as much on history as hostility. If the players aren’t as personally committed though, the respective fan bases will more than make up for it. From the TD Bank arena in Boston, MA to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, fans let the opposing team feel the brunt of this rivalry. With chants of “Beat LA and Boston Sucks” neither team is exempt from the jawing. Since 1987, the finals rivalry had a break; that is until twenty one years later in the 2008 NBA finals that the Celtics and Lakers match-up would yet again come to fruition. All new faces took center stage as LA’s Kobe Bryant and Boston’s Kevin Garnett would lead their teams into battle. The Boston Celtics and their lucky three leaf clover wearing leprechauns would dominate and crush the Los Angeles Lakers, winning the series and the final game by a demoralizing margin of 39 points. This painful loss to Boston left a very unsavory taste in the Laker’s mouths – especially Kobe Bryant, who had been waiting for a chance to return to the finals against Boston to avenge himself and his team. Now, two years later Kobe and his Laker teammates are once again finished off the season in the big game. Back to back championships for the franchise. One game after setting a sharp-shooting record, Ray Allen’s misfiring and Derek Fisher’s late baskets helped Los Angeles win 91-84 in game 3 and gave them a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Game 4 went to the Celtics as Glen “Big Baby” Davis led the Celtics bench on a game-changing

run, scoring half of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as Boston pulled away from the Los Angeles Lakers to win 96-89 and knot the best-ofseven series at two games apiece. The Celtic mystique has arisen again, as mighty Boston has a 3-2 series lead with a hard fought 92-86 victory over LA at the TD Garden. Coming into these finals series, Kevin Garnett’s Celtics were the underdogs as the Lakers have home court advantage and the best clutch player in the game – Kobe Bryant, also known as “The Black Mamba,” due to his uncanny talent for taking the life out of opponents by striking them with a barrage of unstoppable shots. The stage was set. Boston was up 3-2 and the last two games for the Championship were played in Los Angeles. The NBA, the fans and the Lakers all got their wish as the Lakers took game 6 and extended the series to a game 7 showdown at the Staples Center. It was high drama for the NBA and basketball fans worldwide – but especially so for the frenzied fans of LA and Boston who love championships but even more so at the expense of the other’s franchise. Cities like Boston and Los Angeles are so accustomed to basketball success and championships. That anything less than that is considered a failure and disappointment. Lakers hysteria was in full swing and right on time as the fans here know that better than anywhere else that extra spark and energy the Lakers faithful put out can be the difference in a tight series. Turns out all the energy they needed flowed into the Lakers’ veins as they overcame a huge deficit in the fourth quarter of game seven and won the 2010 championship. The mantra’s “Does “Boston Suck” as LA fans often shout out and Boston’s follower’s “Beat LA” were definitely all both these teams need to give us an action-packed series and remind us that there is nothing like a great rivalry to get people excited. Congratulations on number 17 LA!! Don’t worry Boston, we’ll be back next year!! NEWYORKTRENDONLINE.COM
