Welcome to Majura Football Club 2010. Please join me in saying “Thank you to all the blue coats!” As I write this there are just two games to go, but still all to play for! I’d like to thank the Committee and all the Coaches, Managers, Parents and Players for helping out in various ways to enable our wonderful community to come together and play football each weekend. Eamonn has put forward his unique review inside this magazine but I’d like to highlight a couple of things we’ve managed to achieve this year. 

Over 1,250 boys and girls have played football this Canberra winter. (We didn’t stop for the rain!)

We’ve had many, many Referees and Coaches taking to the field each weekend, some for the first time.

We’ve introduced Coerver training for those that wanted extra football development. Paul Whittingham and Jason Thornton have provided extra development for many of our junior players.

We continue to build our relationship with Canberra Olympic, through training, advice and match day experiences.

Majura Players: We know you can play but can you write? Here’s your chance to get published! Can you take a team or player photo? Check out the Majura writers in this edition. Love your football, like to write, why not give it a go?

Football Club

Some of our 1,250 players kicked their first football in PeeWees, others are topping tables and goal scoring lists in various grades. Hope to see you all again next season but I’d like to thank the whole Commitee for ensuring goals are marked out, nets are up, Refs are on-time, kits and balls are ready to go, registrations are completed and team lists are ready to go and all the other jobs that have to be done for our children to play. For a volunteer organisation with 1,250 players I think the Committee have done a wonderful job. Please thank them when you pass a bluecoat around the ground! And again to anyone who helped in anyway. Thank you one and all!

Send to:

See you all next season and have a think about participating on the Committee!

U9/U10 Parents VOTE NOW at Majura FC The Issue: Majura Football Club has run its U/10 open and girls competition in-house or intra-club for a number of years now playing all games at Dickson. After discussion with experienced coaches, the Majura FC committee is now considering entering all U/10 teams in the inter-club competition run by Capital Football throughout Canberra and surrounds. The committee would like to know what parents and carers of our current U/10s and our future U/10s think about this change. The change: Entering the inter-club competition would mean that from 2011 U/10 players would be graded and teams would be required to travel every second Saturday to other clubs for games, usually in the northern half of Canberra. Players not wanting to be graded still have the option of playing with friends in more social teams but would still be required to travel. This change needs support from parents to take place. Skill drill: How to beat a player We aren’t all blessed with great pace, but we can all learn how to beat a player. This drill shows the most simple but effective way of beating a player, or getting you out of a tight spot.

Technical Development

By U12 every player at Majura should be able to complete the skill in the video below if they’ve spent some time practicing. (I’d suggest most players can start this drill at 7 depending on their co-ordination. And unlike Andres Iniesta you don’t have to be a World Cup Winner to beat a player with the ball!

Coerver @ Majura

All it takes is practice, and the more you do it, the faster you’ll become.

You can do it when in full flow or from a standing start. This is particularly useful in Futsal. And don’t worry if it doesn’t work. Keep practicing and then keep trying it in a game until it works! Let me know if it works for you, and if you can’t get it, get your Coach or a Parent to demonstrate. If they can’t help get Paul Whittingham, Jason Thornton, Heather Fitt or some other ball dancing parent or older player to show you the move!

Indoor Football or Futsal is about to start in Canberra. Registration details are all here.

Summer Football?

But here’s a thought for the season:

Technical Development Coerver @ Majura Majura Quiz Futsal News Skill Video Opinion: Futsal next? Meet the U8 Bilbies U14@Cowra Kanga Cup

Why undo all the good work your players have learned from Outdoor football this season? Most teams in Majura (7-18) are now playing good outdoor football, rolling the ball out from the keeper enabling the players to get to the ball, players are getting more touches, solving more problems and starting to work the ball forward. The days of the “big kick” or “big throw” from our keepers are almost behind us as we aim to develop more skilful, better players. But in the ACT, North Canberra at least, if you’ve ever watched a game of Futsal all the work from the outdoor season goes out the window. From 6-16 Futsal teams scream for their goalkeepers to kick it or throw it as far down the hall as possible. Mostly, 80% of the time, the ball goes out, the player can’t control it or the opposition gets the ball. So why not enforce your own development rule? All Majura Futsal teams should aim to roll the ball to a player who is to the side of the goal, or pass it with their feet to same player in same position. The keeper’s team mates must be side-on to receive the ball.

and you can hear the Nearpost radio show on www.2xxfm.org.au or catch the podcast on the blog. 6.30pm All the Aussie football with the Nearpost team, Tuesday 98.3fm 7.00 Local football with Peter Funnell

Of course you’ll sweat on the sideline as the players struggle to control and work the ball forward. Of course you’ll concede goals, maybe lose matches along the way but I guarantee every player in every team will improve as a player. Watch the players defend the ball, learn to shield the ball, and watch team-mates solve problems, through skilful football rather than relying on the big hoof down the middle. Make Futsal count this Futsal season; and you’ll be surprised at the improvement your players will make as they switch back to the outdoor game next autumn. Good luck

Season Review 10

The Majura Blue Belles under 14 girls team (and friends) travelled to Cowra on Sunday 15th August for their under 15 carnival. On a bitterly cold day the girls won the first game 2 - nil before drawing the second game. In the third game of the day it all clicked and the net took a battering with the Blue Belles winning 10 nil. This set up a final with an under 15 squad from Orange. The final was easily the highlight of the day. The two teams went goal for goal until the game ended at 3 all. A decision was made to award Majura the winners based on first goal scored. It was a pleasure to be involved with the girls who competed with spirit and passion all day yet demonstrated positive sportin behaviour throughout. Congratulations Emma, Monica, Lilly, Elly, Breanna, Imogen, Vic (from Majura 14's) Emma, Maddie, Mykaela, Amy, Allie (from other Majura teams) and Alex imported from Belnorth.
