world, anyway), and you, Cal Poly and Cuesta’s new students, are starting to trickle into town.

It’s time to buckle down and buy books, greet new

roommates, size up your fellow classmates, and think about more than which classes will keep you up all night studying. Start the

year off right: with a resolution to expand your horizons. Sign up for a dance class. Join a basketball team. Think outside the campus and get to know locals. Whether you’re a freshman or transfer student, you’ll need some help. Sure, there are friendly college staffers and obliging upperclassmen to help guide you, but how many of them will give you a list of local Farmers Markets? Or compile a guide to caffeine in SLO? Or tip you off on how to live like you want your deposit check back? Or create a nifty doorknob hanger just for you? None of them. Not a one. Can you believe that out of all the smiling, helpful, nodding, polite people you’ll meet in your first days on and around campus, New Times is the only one who thought to do all that—and more—in this Student Guide? That’s just who we are. We do it because we think you’re worth it. Because you are our future. And because if we get on your good side right away, you’ll be more likely to lend us $20 down the road. Just if we need it. It’s no problem, right? I mean, after all, we stayed up all night making you a doorknob hanger. 6]ER 1MPPIV I\IGYXMZI IHMXSV

“Dancing in college was a really good thing for me because it was always that outlet that I could turn to if things were in a flux. Dance was always that one consistent thing I was used to throughout my whole life, and I knew I could always turn to dance to balance my life out. It was also a good way for me to explore myself artistically, meet new people that shared the same passion, and share my talent with the community and inspire people.”

“One day I bought a board and surfed my first wave, and I was hooked. What surfing did for me was that it allowed me to be with my friends and travel. If you’re going to school at Cal Poly, pick up surfing because it’s a great sport. It goes hand in hand, because the beach is right there. The surf here is phenomenal—we have sand breaks and rock breaks and the sunsets are beautiful. If you’re just starting out, search for used gear, preferably a mid-sized board (6-foot-8 to 7-foot-2) with some buoyancy, because surf gear is expensive.”

I was just playing and writing songs in my dorm room, and so the community there got me playing shows and it escalated from there. When I came to California, it was a complete 180 as far as culture, weather, and landscape environment, and that was kind of what gave me the initial inspiration to write songs. Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo is such a beautiful place to live, and it has had a huge influence as far as my music writing and the overall sound of the music I write.”

Obispo. The gallery features monthly exhibits, including painting, sculpture, and photography. Poetry readings and concerts are regular happenings. The gallery is a little ways away from the heart of downtown, but it’s not too far to walk or bike to while out and about. The sandwiches and sweets provide a plus to the international and artsy atmosphere. On Garden Street, Linnaea’s CafÊ also features a rotating cycle of art on its walls, as well as performances by local and faraway musicians several times each week. It’s not unusual to hear poetry on the back patio, and the cafÊ annually plays host to the city’s Language of the Soul Poetry Festival in November. As with anywhere, much of the art that happens in San Luis Obispo can be found in everyday spaces, not requiring any planning or special visits at all. It’s easy to miss some of the best artistic treasures of the Central Coast if one doesn’t look carefully. The Mission Church and Museum features some of California’s oldest buildings and a mixture of native Californian and Spanish art unique to the West Coast. Keep an eye out for brightly painted fish

statues that keep long walks around town interesting. The amphitheater behind the creek sometimes features troubadours, real or imagined. There are always shows all around town, including performers at Farmers Market on Thursday evenings and in the gazebo in Mitchell Park. In fact, musicians play shows in just about every nook and cranny around town. Singer-songwriters regularly present new material at the Clubhouse at This Old House. Downtown Brew, located opposite Linnaea’s on Garden Street, features live music nearly every night of the week spanning just about every musical genre you can imagine. There are also several opportunities for amateur artists to participate in events, such as periodic chalk drawing opportunities in Mission Plaza, pottery classes downtown, and dancing at Farmers Market on Thursday nights. Art is everywhere—you don’t even have to look very hard. $

t’s easily one of the most unpleasant experiences of college. It’s ridiculously expensive, often confusing, and once you’ve completed it, it’s time to do it all over again. That’s right: It’s time to buy your textbooks. Whether you’re attending Cal Poly or Cuesta College, shopping for necessary textbooks and other supplies can easily cost you hundreds of dollars every few months, making this relentless activity one of the most dreaded

for students. However, unlike registration fees and parking permits, textbook costs vary greatly, and a little diligence and shopping around can save you some serious money. Don’t assume that just because your campus has its own bookstore that it’s the only option. In fact, though convenient as it may be, your campus bookstore may not be the greatest place to get your supplies. With so many alternatives available,

there’s no reason acquiring necessary course materials has to be an expensive and time-consuming chore. First off: Buy used. That’s a given. The difference between a new and a used textbook can literally be around half price. Though the campus bookstore usually carries used books, the numbers are limited and typically sell out quickly, making this a poor option for that last-minuteadded class. A two-minute drive from the Cal Poly campus reveals SLO Textbooks, a local alternative to buying books on campus. The store carries all the required materials for both Poly and Cuesta at competitive prices, including those coveted used editions. Manager Brendan Wood also pointed out that when it comes to the consistently disappointing task of selling your books at the end of the quarter, SLO Textbooks aims to offer higher buybacks than El Corral. “We’re going to pay more,” Wood said. “We try to offer students the best value.” Regardless of where you do your textbook shopping, it pays to do your homework. Open until 11:30 p.m., Black Horse Espresso and Bakery hits you with a nice aroma of fresh pastries and strong espresso right when you walk through the door. It offers a daily stimulus package with free Wi-Fi, coffee, and a muffin for $2.50—or if you just need a cheap caffeine kick, buy their 50-cent small drip coffee. Downtown SLO’s open patio provides a nice atmosphere to catch up with friends and a fireplace to warm yourself on cold, foggy SLO nights, with help from one of their fabulously foamed lattes. You can’t go wrong by visiting either location.

With 25-cent refills for coffee and free refills for tea, Linnaea’s Cafe is unlike any other coffee shop in the area. Known for its sunlit outdoor patio, it’s a great place to meet with friends under a vine-covered archway or to sit with your favorite book near the koi pond. Listen to some live music and revel in the rotating art work on display. Order an organic and fair-trade latte that comes with a beautifully crafted leaf-design in the foam from the barista. Splurge on food specials that alternate every day: home-cooked favorites like waffles, cornbread, or baked potatoes. Don’t forget cash, though—there’s a $5 minimum for debit and credit.

he Cal Poly and Cuesta College campuses boast a plethora of professors who are outstanding in the ways they teach and the knowledge they’ve specialized in. That said, there are also those who will grind their students with assignments and schedule midterms the week before finals. The professors mentioned in this article are only a few of the many who will make your college experience a profoundly enriching one. Cal Poly business senior Brittany Kelley recommends Keith Vorst,

You can’t go wrong with free veggies and the fresh Central Coast air to breathe. Another class at the farm is the annual organic agriculture lecture class (AG 315), which features lab sections taught at the Organic Farm. (Executive editor’s note: Take a poetry class with Jim Cushing if you can. He will blow your mind. Or a music class with Craig Russell. You’ll be amazed.) Ultimately, for the best advice, talk to your peers and upperclassmen, thumb through the Cal Poly catalog, or go to the department head. Websites like Polyratings.com can’t give a completely clear answer since your fellow peers can be cruel about stuff like professors’ appearances. Dean Phil Bailey, of the College of Science and Math, is likely the most well-known and most favorite dean on campus. Sarah Phillips, a biology senior, described him as compassionate and dedicated to his students. “[He] makes an effort to get to know all his students and even teaches a lab so that he, the dean, can know [students] on a more personal level, Phillips said. If you’re an incoming College of Science and Math freshman, it’s definitely good to get to know your dean on a personal level early. Taking his introductory class would help. ot all of the college experience is studying and coffee. One thing you’ll soon learn about San Luis Obispo is the unusually high number of sports bars, pubs, taverns, and lounges sitting downtown or in otherwise close proximity to the Cal Poly campus. Here’s a short list of places to spend some downtime—if you’re of age, of course.

8LI 7LEGO ) *SSXLMPP &PZH WYMXI % ˆ

Pretty much the closest establishment to campus, the Shack is a good little sports bar where students can watch the game over a pitcher with friends. You don’t have to be 21 to get in, the portions are huge, and the beer is inexpensive. Unfortunately, it closes a little early to fit that “bar category, but it’s a great spot for a burger, and the garlic fries are downright amazing. Oh, yeah—free peanuts!

1G'EVXL]ÂŤW -VMWL 4YF 1EVWL 7X ˆ How to put it best? You simply haven’t experienced SLO without visiting New Times readers’ vote for Best San Luis Obispo Bar at least once. It’s more of an “older crowdâ€? establishment, but the service is exceptional. After relocating last year, the legendary McCarthy’s is still everything you want in a good bar: friendly barkeeps, plenty of space, a smoking patio, and a digital jukebox for when you just have to hear that one song. The one drawback: bring cash. Other than that, it’s a real winner in every category.

&PEGO 7LIIT &EV ERH +VMPP 'LSVVS 7X ˆ

Another must-see, this is an excellent destination for enjoying a few brews and meeting people. Because the service and atmosphere are so good, all types and ages of people come here, making the experience always interesting. Though it can get cramped at night, it does offer a nice outside patio. The Sheep is also a place where the appetizers are meals in themselves, the burgers are some of the juiciest you’ll find anywhere, and if you can finish the nacho plate by yourself, you’re probably superhuman.

1SXLIVÂŤW 8EZIVR ,MKYIVE ˆ A swankier destination, Mother’s— now operating as Mo/Tav—features a gorgeous Honduran mahogany bar and is one of the nicer dancing venues in town. It’s unveiling a new, organic menu featuring locally grown produce, and boasts 14 beers on tap and a happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. There’s live music five nights a week, and the lux upstairs lounge is available for special events and bottle service. Downside: dress code. But you probably wouldn’t want to show up at a place like this in your pajama bottoms anyway.

789()28 +9-() ÂŤ

*VSK ERH 4IEGL 4YF ,MKYIVE 7X ˆ

1EVXMÂŤW &EV ERH +VMPP ,MKYIVE 7X ˆ

Newly remodeled, the Peach has really made some great improvements and it remains one of the more popular venues for good beer and live music every night. Specials include $1 off all drafts at Pint Night on Tuesdays and $3 Red Stripes during Cool Runnins Happy Hour—that’s 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. Check out Open Jam night on Mondays, when you’ll catch members of your favorite local bands mixing it up.

This is a fun place to get together with some friends. The Century Club Shot List includes 100 different shots, which, if you complete—and you can take your time with it—you get a portrait of your mug on the wall. A colorful atmosphere, plenty of elbow room, and an award-winning staff means a shot at Marti’s is never a shot in the dark.

8LI 0MFVEV] 0SYRKI ,MKYIVE 7X ˆ

&YJJEPS &EV ERH +VMPP ,MKYIVE 7X ˆ

Don’t let the name fool you. Nobody is doing any reading here, and the only studying is of fellow student bodies. It’s dark, it’s small, and it’s not the best-smelling bar in town, but it’s not entirely a bad place to end up at 1 a.m. for a little dirty dancing.

Like Black Sheep, Buffalo has a nice long bar, outstanding food, an excellent drink selection, and a really cool staff. The Old West theme and three televisions make this place a solid choice for watching the game over a beer. &%67 GSRXMRYIH SR TEKI

(S[RXS[R &VI[MRK 'S +EVHIR 7X ˆ The main destination for music lovers in SLO, DTB is host to countless local and big-name bands every week. The spacious two-story establishment is literally a one-stop shop for a night of fun. It holds regular events, brews its own awardwinning beers, and offers great deals on some really good food. Another upside: Many events are all ages. There’s just too much going on at DTB to do it justice here—just check it out.

2EXMZI 0SYRKI 'LSVVS 7X ˆ Dress to impress when you come to Native, and you’ll be glad you did. This place is the very definition of lounge: clean, spacious, colorful, and full of fashionable people. It has an extensive cocktail menu and drinks are half off at happy hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. daily and all day on Thursdays. One of the main attractions is the dance floor, with live D.J.s on weekends. When you need a rest, there are plenty of

plush couches inside and a huge patio section outside. VIP and bottle service is available for special events.

/SFIVP EX FPYI 1SRXIVI] 7X ˆ By far the classiest establishment close to campus, blue is located in the historic J.P. Andrews building, erected in 1894. It’s definitely pricey, but you do get what you pay for. Ideal for showing that date just how grown up you are, the place just screams good taste. Classic jazz pipes through the speakers, it boasts the most comprehensive fine liquor collection in town, and it serves up really fancy appetizers and meals like ahi or snow crab chinois.

* 1G'PMRXSGOW 7EPSSR ERH (MRMRK ,SYWI ,MKYIVE 7X ˆ Though widely regarded as the place to go downtown for a big steak at a reasonable price, their bar is good, too. It has a decent selection of bottled and

One of the newest venues in town, this one keeps a low profile. It’s not your typical bar. A bona fide “beer geek destination, Creekside offers its own delectable brews on tap, and the awesome staffers go out of their way to educate patrons about everything beer. 1) If you can, talk to previous tenants and find out whether your landlord is cool or a rip-off machine. Do it! It will save you from the headache of figuring it out the hard way, when it’s time to move out. 2) Take photos of the place when you move in and out, and keep records of everything. I mean everything. Use that move-in checklist in your favor. You won’t believe what your landlord will charge you for until it’s printed on a bill. 3) Choose your roommates wisely. You don’t want to live with that guy who for some reason likes putting holes in the wall when things don’t go his way. (And that Spackle job the next day is not going to suffice. Trust me.) I had good roommates, but there are always those friends who come over when the weekend rolls around and who don’t respect your home. 4) When it’s time to move out, clean the hell out of that place. And make

sure to buy “real” cleaning products— not that cheap stuff you can pick up at Albertsons. Go to a janitorial store and keep the receipt. 5) Get a pre-inspection before you move out. This will help out a ton. You will get an idea of how sneaky and picky your landlord or maintenance guys are. On my pre-inspection, the maintenance guy was making a fuss over microscopic pieces of food that weren’t “thoroughly cleaned” from the refrigerator rack. 6) When the final inspection comes around, have photos and your checklist in hand, ready to dispute any questionable claims. Follow these steps, and you should be in good shape when it comes time to move out. $ Omar Sanchez is a Cal Poly journalism alumnus and New Times intern. Send comments to rmiller@newtimes slo.com.

raternities and sororities are often negatively portrayed in the media. Images of rampant partying, hazing, and drug use are commonly tacked onto Greek organizations. While it’s impossible to completely dismiss such stereotypes, they are highly over-exaggerated. As a longtime member of the Greek community, business senior Ryan McKinley brushes off the misconceptions. “The Greek community is a boon to Cal Poly, its student body, and the surrounding community,” McKinley said. “Aside from the philanthropic organizations which benefit yearly from Greek fundraisers, a frequently ignored virtue of the Greek community is the experience with which it provides its members. The Greek system provides a ‘continu-

ing education’ which imbues its students with social and networking skills they would be much less likely to gain outside of fraternity and sorority life.” Greek life offers a slew of leadership opportunities. The organization is run like a corporation. The president is essentially its face, and has the final say in almost all decisions. The treasurer will be responsible for creating and managing a budget that can run upwards of $100,000 a year. A social chair needs to form good relations with neighboring organizations in order to plan parties and exchanges. Recruitment chairs must be upbeat and dynamic in efforts to bring in new members and ensure the survival of the chapter. Apart from the major positions, members will also be responsible for

come from Greek life, a large shadow has fallen over the entire Greek system with the death of freshman Carson Starkey last December. Starkey, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon pledge, died in connection with initiation rituals. An autopsy reported his blood alcohol level at more than five times the legal limit. Despite the fact that this incident only involved one fraternity, the value of Greek life on campus was heavily questioned. Normal Greek activities were temporarily suspended in mid-December. In early January, representatives from each fraternity and sorority went to Cambria on a Greek Summit retreat to discuss the future of Greek life. While Greek activities were reinstated after the summit, formal winter rush was canceled. Fraternities were able to hold informal rushes and pledge programs, which needed to be explicitly laid out in a document and were heavily monitored by Greek life advisor Stephen Lamb. This upcoming school year, similar restrictions will be put into place during recruitment periods. Business sophomore Nathan Taccini, the rush chair for Sigma Pi fraternity, doesn’t think the regulations will affect the size of Greek recruitment. “I think the new regulations that the +6))/ 0-*) GSRXMRYIH SR TEKI

maintaining brotherhood/sisterhood, participation in sports, public relations, philanthropy, new member education, fundraising, upkeep of chapter history, and many other branches. Considering that each segment of the chapter’s operation needs a committee, almost every member in a Greek organization will have some type of leadership role. Greek organizations also do an overwhelming amount of philanthropic work each year. Charity work done by Panhellenic sororities is the most noteworthy, as each house is responsible for holding one enormous philanthropy event every year. The newly chartered Chi Omega successfully held its first annual Chi-O Casino night at the local veterans’ hall, which raised thousands of dollars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. And of course nobody can forget Alpha Omicron Pi’s annual Mr. Fraternity event at the Graduate. Every fraternity on campus is represented at this male pageant, where a select member competes in three rounds: formal wear, sportswear, and talent. More than 700 members of the Greek community are represented at Mr. Fraternity, and the event raises thousands of dollars for arthritis research. Despite all of the good qualities that

IFC is putting on the Greek system is going to make rush more difficult and more of a task for all the Greek organizations, but in the long run I think the size of recruitment for Greek life will be more or less unaffected because there will still be a lot of students who want to be Greek, he said. For many Greek organizations, a rule of thumb is that 10 percent of incoming students will be dead set on becoming Greek, another 10 percent will be completely opposed to the idea, and the remaining 80 percent are undecided. Fortunately, Greek life at Cal Poly thrives. With 11 percent of Cal Poly’s 19,000 undergraduates being affiliated with Greek organizations, the community is one of the strongest in the entire CSU system. I’m personally involved with Greek life, and I can guarantee that it’s a positive experience in every way. Involvement in my fraternity has taught me invaluable life skills. As the founding secretary of my chapter, I needed to devote a huge amount of time to develop the necessary infrastructure to sustain a healthy fraternity. We started off as a colony and needed to complete specific tasks in order to attain our charter. During the journey to accomplish this huge task, I helped create a 200page petition to charter, co-planned

a $10,000 banquet and Masquerade Ball for the chartering ceremony, and aided in recruiting members—among many other deeds. While a large part of Greek life revolves around planning cool events and having fun, so much life experience is gained in the process, and it looks great on job rÊsumÊs. Being closely associated with a large, diverse group of students provided me great resources throughout college. If I needed a roommate, help with school, someone to play racquetball with, social advice, or even help finding a job, there were always brothers who could help out and were just a phone call or a couple doors away. I would probably never even have a reason to dress up if it wasn’t for my involvement in a fraternity, and the many meetings and formal occasions that occurred. My fraternity gives me a sense of belonging at Cal Poly, and makes the large campus feel like a smaller, more intimate place. After I graduate, I will always be able to come back to my fraternity and remember all the great times. Any student interested in the Greek system will surely be able to find a suitable Greek organization at Cal Poly. $ Chris Jagger is a Cal Poly journalism alumnus and New Times intern. RMKLX E[E] (ERGI XLI 703 8LI +VEHYEXI -RHYWXVMEP ;E] ˆ Also known as “the Grad, this local dance club is considered a hot party go-to spot among Cal Poly and Cuesta students alike. Most popular for “College Hump Night on Wednesday nights, the Grad creates a real party atmosphere for all college students, not just the 21-and-older crowd. DJs at the turntables spin the most popular, high-energy hits, coupled with surreal lighting and smoke that help bring the party to the dance floor. Just watch out for creepy older men. Attention ladies (and gentlemen, too): There is a cage and a stripper pole. But the Grad isn’t just another place that only caters to guys looking to freak the hottestlooking girl in the club. The Grad tries to appeal to every kind of dancer by offering different dance styles every night of the week. Tuesday night is swing, Thursday night is country line dancing, and Friday night is Latin night.

VJs (video-jockeys), the stage, two levels—if you’re 21, and dancing with 18-year-olds just isn’t cool anymore, come to Downtown Brew. Here you can meet people your own age and get your groove on. This two-story bar and club offers two different kinds of scenes for the average partygoer. On the ground floor, you’ll find the dancing, the stage, and the DJ or VJ on some nights. The dance party really gets going with a packed dance floor and crowded stage on Friday and Saturday nights. But if you want to take a break from dancing, you and your friends can retreat upstairs to the pool tables, couches, tables, and chairs for a more relaxed feel, fit for socializing with old and new friends. The dress code is simple: If you want to dress up you can, if you don’t want to, that’s OK, too.

Mother’s is another 21-and-older dance spot. The DJ spins hot club mixes to get the party started. There’s live music, too. A big screen shows off hot music videos. Enjoy the atmosphere, but, again, keep an eye out for those older men. The establishment also goes by Mo/Tav now, so it doesn’t take as long as before to say the name when talking about dancing there.

If you’re looking for a 21-and-older dance spot and don’t mind mixing 20-plus other people’s sweat with yours, try the Library—because this club and bar is known for its small space and crowded dance floor.

2EXMZI 0SYRKI 'LSVVS 7X ˆ If dressing up and paying a $5 cover is your thing, come to Native. Here, there’s an evident socialite kind of atmosphere. The dance floor is small, but there is a DJ. You can get your own booth and bottle service or opt to schmooze with the darkhaired mystery man over Blueberry Presses by the bar. There’s also an outdoor patio if you prefer intimate socializing to dancing. $ Krizia Torres is a Cal Poly journalism alumna. Send comments to the executive editor at rmiller@newtimesslo.com.

here’s a reason why the San Luis Obispo area is a hub for tourists visiting California. But many who visit are clueless about the hidden hot spots of local culture. If you’re new to town, get ready to explore.

Expert surfers frequent a surf spot called “Hazards, where waves live up to the dangerous connotations of the name. The park boasts four environmental campsites that campers have to reserve ahead of time due to their popularity. The hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and equestrian trails wind practically endlessly throughout the 8,000-acre state park. The 1,347-foot Valencia Peak is arguably one of the most beautiful hikes in the area, with a 360-degree view of the park, Morro Rock, and dunes. For a trail with no hills, try the 3.8-mile Point Buchon trail, which PG&E recently opened to the public. At the end of the park, make sure to stop at the check-in station and sign a PG&E waiver. It’s worth your signature,

since you’ll see a sink hole and a dozen picture-worthy views of the ocean. There’s even a beach with caves to explore. On your way back into San Luis Obispo, make sure to eat lunch or dinner in Los Osos. Try the spicy Pad Thai at Noi’s Little Thai Takeout (1288 2nd St., 528-6647), or stop in at Sylvester’s (1099 Santa Ynez Ave., 528-0779), known for its great selection of juicy, messy burgers, fries, and onion rings. The California and mushroom burgers are a must have, but all of them are amazing.

Escape dorm life and textbooks for a weekend (optimal for those three-day breaks) and take a road trip with a group of friends or a romantic getaway with your new campus crush to Big Sur, known for its rugged cliffs and views of the green-blue ocean. Backpack into its many trails for the weekend or pull off into one of the campgrounds that line Highway 1 for great views of the Pacific.

Near Arroyo Grande, Lopez Lake is an adventure for anyone who loves trails and exploring. Hikers can follow the Little Falls trail, which goes along Little Creek. Along the trail, hikers can see a 50-foot waterfall north of Lopez Lake in the Santa Lucia Wilderness.

“Eins, zwei, g’suffa! Patrons like to use a Bavarian toast (meaning “One, two, drink!) at this popular spot at the annual celebration of Oktoberfest. If you’re not studying abroad this year, partake in the celebration. Those old enough can fill up on authentic German beer served on tap and dance to live polka music every weekend starting Sept. 18 and ending Oct. 30. Enjoy the bar-only celebrations for a $5 cover charge on Thursdays and Sundays, and $10 on Fridays and

Saturdays. It’s crowded, so get there early. For those who are underage or who want to eat the delicious German food, reserve a table and buy tickets early—the price is around $30 depending on the night, but it doesn’t include drinks. One liter (an X-large) German beer will cost you $10 to $12, but it’s well worth it.

*EVQIVW 1EVOIX There’s one every day in SLO County. Yes, college life can be crazy. You may have class on Thursday nights, or some club-affiliated function, or you may have to work that boring part-time job at the same time San Luis Obispo’s Farmers Market hits downtown. Without fresh veggies, kettle corn, and roasted corn, what will you do? Try any of the other Farmers Markets San Luis Obispo County offers daily, so your dorm fridge can still be packed with fresh local food. Carpool with your friends to any of the markets listed to escape the cafeteria food that will be forced upon you during the college years. On the first Thursday of every month, insanely dressed bikers take part in Bike Night (as Cal Poly calls it) or the Bike Happening (as it’s known to the rest of the community). San Francisco calls its bike gathering Critical Mass, where bikers take over the streets. For San Luis Obispo’s Bike

Happening you must have three things: • A great attitude • A crazy outfit to fit into the month’s theme. The August theme was “Sharks! Are you a shark or shark bait?â€? (Check bikehappening .org for October’s theme.) • Respect for the rules of biking and courtesy to others. Meet at the mission in downtown SLO at 9 p.m. The route wraps around Nipomo to Marsh Street to the Bank of America parking lot between Marsh and Higuera. Once bikers circle the route, wait at the parking lot for the rest of the pack, then “swarmâ€? Higuera together on a green light. Happening organizers stress that the only stopping at the parking lot should happen after lap one. Since lap two is the end of the night, arrange your own post-Bike Night festivities with your buddies or with friends you may meet along the ride. $

For those of us who don’t have an iPod attachment in our cars, the airwaves still prove useful—even if they do start to fuzz as you drive out of town. t won’t take you very long to notice the absence of ethnic diversity on the Cal Poly campus. And with that dearth comes a lack of cultural experience. While such diversity isn’t necessarily as important as the quality of education you’ll be getting, college is also about breaking out of your shell and meeting new people with different backgrounds. Interactions with people different from you can teach you a lot. And such meetings and lessons will help you out long after you graduate. Finding diversity is no easy task, however, especially at a school where the population is nearly two-thirds white, and where blacks only account for one percent. The word “tolerance” gets thrown around a lot, but if you have to tolerate someone just because they’re different, you probably aren’t ready for college. The best thing you can do is interact with as many of your peers as possible—and keep an open mind. You’ll soon find out that people are individuals and shouldn’t always be categorized into a group.

Don’t meet your roomies while kneeling over a toilet after drinking too much jungle punch at your WOW leader’s fraternity house party. Seriously. But don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to those around you when you get to your dorm and run into roommates all week. Now is the time to be an extrovert.

With beautiful stretches of coast in the county, from San Simeon to Oceano, students should be ditching the PlayStation for the inviting sands and ocean the Central Coast offers. Drive a truck packed with your new roommates onto the Oceano Dunes with a small barbecue to grill your favorite fish. Or bike from San Luis Obispo to Avila Beach Pier via the Bob Jones Trail to eat some wicked fresh swordfish or local halibut tacos at Pete’s Pierside Café—which comes with an awesome ocean view. Shell Beach is just south of Avila Beach, where college students crowd in on days the mercury rises above 85 degrees.

drink deals. With rentals available at Poly Escapes, students should be flocking to the nearest cheap spots around. Poly Escapes offers kayak rentals and other camping necessities at low prices to students—and for just a little bit more to non-Cal Poly students.

With Cerro San Luis (you’ll know it as Madonna) and Bishop Peak sitting practically in your backyard, there’s no excuse for not hiking either by you junior year—at the very latest. Hikes on San Luis Obispo’s foggy nights are the best, since hikers can climb through the fog and reach the peak to see a vast amount of clouds covering the little city we call SLO. Bring a flashlight (headlamps work great) and some treats for the summit! Poly Escapes also offers low-cost outdoor day- and week-long trips that are great for meeting people while exploring, kayaking, and hiking—among the other outdoor activities they offer.

Studying should be a major factor in your college experience, but don’t go crazy doing it. Avoid the Adderall and five-hour energy drinks that your roommate used to cram for tests the night before. Use an orga-

nizer—whether it’s online, on your smart phone, or in a notebook—to stay on top of things. Always have a study buddy who won’t distract you. Having someone else around who is suffering the same pain of not going to that big party is going to help you out in the long run when that GPA gets you into graduate school or earns you next year’s scholarship.

have come to Cal Poly. Another reason to leave the dorm room is the Another Type of Groove poetry slams at Cal Poly on the first Wednesday of every month. These events bring in nationally known slam poets who hand over the microphone to audience members to express what’s on their mind.

It’s funny how many students drive their cars in a town like San Luis Obispo. This town is completely bike friendly, and the San Luis Obispo transit system is something to take advantage of. One thing every careless student should know: The regional bus goes to the beach!

Putting up picture frames to remind you of home—or even buying some plants for your dorm or office—will help you retain your sanity. Comfort items are a must. Bamboo plants are hard to kill and need little water, but will create some life in that dreary dorm room.

As the price of college rises, you always want to be checking with your advisor to see if you’re on track to graduate. Getting the classes you need is hard enough. Take it from the sixthyear seniors: You want to know what classes you need and when you have to take them.

It may be knowledge that sparks your way of thinking in a new direction. Famous political figures and comedians—like Ralph Nader and Carlos Mencia—

Just remember: Annoying roommates, co-workers, and fellow club members may become some of your best friends, who will forever be in your life. And those professors you had freshman year might make awesome recommendations for future jobs and graduate school applications. $ Cassandra J. Carlson is a Cal Poly journalism alumna.
