Serious Discussions

We both know you’re not hearing as well as you should. Why not try the latest hearing aid technology? Call Karen Scott’s office for

I’m Too Young to Have Hearing Loss … Aren’t I? You might already know that more than 40 million Americans suffer from varying degrees of hearing loss. But did you realize that most of those are under the age of 50? That 1 in 6 baby boomers (ages 41-59) have a hearing problem? That 1 in 14 Generation Xers (ages 29-40) already have hearing loss? That more than a million children have hearing problems, and some infants are born with serious to profound hearing loss? With a doctorate in Audiology and more than three decades of experience treating hearing loss, Karen Scott has been teaching the San Luis Obispo community about the nature of hearing loss since she opened her practice in 1978. “One common misperception is that hearing loss only happens to the elderly,” said Dr. Scott. “The reality is that only 35% of hearing loss clients are older.” That’s why her practice offers specialized services for children, sports enthusiasts, industrial workers, and musicians—in addition to helping the 3 out of every 10 older people who experience hearing loss after 60. Pediatric Audiology specialist Christy Kirsch joined the staff in 2000, bringing a Master’s Degree in Audiology and years of experience in early intervention programs and children’s hospitals. Knowing that finding the right de-

vice with the right fit is only part of the process, Scott employs a well-rounded approach to treating hearing loss, including education and follow-up. “It’s critically important that our clients understand their hearing loss so that they can have realistic expectations,” she said. “And to be sure that everyone gets the best results possible, we follow our clients’ progress—whether newborns or great-grandparents—long after they’ve left the office.” Our hearing is our most important “social sense.” It’s also important to our personal safety, as it often serves as an early warning system. And good hearing enhances quality of life in ways we don’t even consider. Symptoms can be subtle, and the loss so gradual we often don’t realize what we’re missing until we are tested. Don’t let age, pride, or anything else stop you from getting help if you suspect you might be missing the sounds of everyday life. Call 541-1790 or visit www.karenscottaudiology.com.

Realty group invigorates agents with teamwork, education Selling homes hasn’t been easy since the real estate bubble burst in 2008. The market is slowly beginning to recover, but after three years of bad business, many realtors are feeling frustrated and desperate. It’s no small wonder then that Keller Williams Coastal Valley is not only surviving, but thriving, and hopes to build a network of over a 100 agents. With the help of new partners in key leadership roles, they recently opened an 8,200 square foot office at 204 East Enos Drive, expanding their work space by about 25 percent. “It’s beautiful and warm, a comfortable place for agents to work that’s really inviting to clients,” said Steve Weiss, the new team leader. “There are meeting rooms with advanced technologies– large, flat screen TVs that let agents Skype with clients and give virtual tours of properties.” Weiss has only been a member of the Keller Williams team for a few weeks, but he’s already enamored with the company’s unique culture, one that allows agents to help and support one another and the vast amount of information and tools available through the Keller Williams University, an online school that takes agents well beyond the basic training required to earn a real estate license. The site offers advanced courses on how to generate leads, list homes, write contracts, and manage distressed properties, skills that give Keller Williams agents a huge advantage. “There was nothing like this when I first started,” said Weiss. “Even in a challenging market, if you follow the systems and tools we provide and

really want to work hard, there’s no limit to how successful you can be.” Weiss may be one of the company’s most valuable resources, even if he’s too humble to admit it. He briefly mentioned his 26 years of experience to New Times and the Sun before focusing on the value of teamwork and the benefits of the company’s monthly group marketing meetings. Lawnae Hunter, a new partner in the brokerage, did Weiss’s boasting for him. “[Weiss] has a wide skill set, and he’s very well known,” said Hunter. “He was the chairperson for the California Real Estate Commission in 2007 and helped write the purchasing contract the whole state uses.” Of course, Hunter brings a little something to the table as well. She’s been in the business for thirty years and formerly owned five central coast offices of Prudential Hunter Realty. Her strengths are in innovative, successful marketing approaches and her ability to anticipate shifts in the market.

5

“Now is the perfect time for this partnership,” said Hunter. “I believe real estate will strengthen, and together, we can build the number one company in the valley.” That confidence comes from the Keller Williams business model. The company has established a system that allows agents to reap the rewards for their hard work, while also spreading a piece of the profits amongst the other agents and support staff. This model differs drastically from the industry standard, wherein fiercely territorial agents battle each other for clients and offer little advice to rookie realtors. Keller Williams also offers its agents a variety of cost efficient support services, like their transaction coordinator and contact management programs. “The beauty of it,” said Weiss, “is that you get a cohesive group of people, more like a family than a team. They cheer for each other when they succeed and pick each other up when they fail.” Dick Keenan, who was the franchise’s sole owner before bringing Hunter aboard, said his main goal for the company is to create and maintain an atmosphere of productivity and success. “The Keller Williams philosophy teaches agents how to have careers worth having, businesses worth owning, and lives worth living,” he said. For Keenan, the most satisfying aspect of the job is seeing the growth of his agents as they take advantage of the franchise’s training and resources. Hunter summed it up like this: “With all of our different strengths, we’ve got the dream team. I’m very pleased with the agents that have made the move to Keller Williams in the first few weeks of this new partnership.” If you’re interested in joining the Keller Williams Coastal Valley team or utilizing its skilled agents for a real estate transaction, call them at 310-5800 or drop by their new office at 204 East Enos Drive.

CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW 2011

SEWING IS “GREEN”… AND SO IS THE MONEY PEOPLE SAVE BY BUYING LOCAL The SANTA MARIA SEWING SUPERSTORE has been “Keeping the Central Coast in Stitches” since Bill Racanski started the business in 1967. Michael Hudachek closed his three stores in Ohio in 1979 and came to Santa Maria to purchase the business that same year. In 2005, Michael and Ellen Hudachek moved the store to the present location at 127 East Main Street (across from the mall parking lot). Their son Christopher Lawrence, with a background in film and television, helped lay out the store to be most convenient and aesthetically pleasing for customers. The store specializes in staying current with all that is new in sewing and creativity. They carry machines and sergers from Bernina, Babylock, Husqvarna Viking, Singer, and are proud to have recently added Janome. – with prices starting at $99. Lifetime free classes come with every machine purchased. “Our goal is to give the best buying experience, training and classes for our customers. We know they do not get that kind of service buying a machine from the shelf at the Big Box Stores,” says Michael. The Santa Maria Sewing Superstore also carries the largest selection of thread in California and the best selection of sewing furniture such as cabinets, cutting tables, storage units and

sewing chairs. They stress ergonomically correct sewing. All technicians go for corporate technical training and therefore is the only sewing store on the central coast that offers “in house” repairs for all sewing equipment … including industrial machines. Michael also sharpens scissors! Ellen said, “We have the most wonderful group of customers. They and our staff are our family.” One group of ladies called “The Quilting Angels” come into the store every other Wednesday (bringing homemade cookies) and use our equipment in order to make quilts for charities. They have now made almost 2000 quilts to give away to needy causes. One customer makes quilts for the owners who adopt pets from the shelter as a “carry home” security blanket. Some customers form their own “cottage” business and do very well on their Internet stores with the items they make. But most are people who enjoy the creativity and the community created by sewing. Michael says, “Buy Local and come join us!” Thanks.

Small Town, Big Service.. SLO’s No. 1 Honda Specialist

We’ve been able to do this for two reasons. The first is the the product we work on is amazing. We love Honda for what it has done for the automotive industry. And by focusing exclusively on one manufacture, we are able to provide a high quality service at a price that’s actually much lower than most other shops. We know these cars so well we often diagnose a problem over the phone! The second reason we’ve stayed in business is that we truly care about our customers. We see our clients every where--downtown, at the coffee shop, in church, at the supermarket, or dining out at a local restaurant. They’re not just customers, they’re our neighbors. And in many cases, they’re friends. And for us, that’s what being in business here is all about. Yeah, San Luis is a small town, and we love it!

San Luis Obispo is a small town. It’s pretty hard to stay in business for any length of time unless you’re treating people right. And even then, it’s not easy. At Landis Automotive, we’ve been servicing the Honda/Acura product line and its customers for three decades-that’s actually longer than the local dealership.

Improving The Health Of The Central Coast…One Smile At A Time As Dr. Mark Leopold and Dr. Nicholas Murphy reflect on their 34th year of practice together, things have never been as exciting—both in the practice and in the field of dentistry. The last six years have been especially eventful for Leopold, Murphy, and Main. Dr. Craig Main joined the practice in May of 2003, and in addition to his restorative and cosmetic dentistry, he’s brought a number of specialty services into the fold. His extended education and training in orthodontics and endodontics helps take care of more patients in-house. “We really enjoy working with Dr. Main.” says Dr. Murphy. “As clinicians, we’re all on the same page when it comes to how to care for our patients’ health and provide for their needs, and that like-mindedness is so important. Craig’s an excellent fit, and we’re happy to see his practice grow.” Dr. Main’s orthodontic services are definitely a factor in the practice growth. Both the Invisalign® and Six-Month Smile® programs are popular with patients. “Most people associate straighter teeth with better aesthetics, but that’s not the only reason to consider straightening your teeth.” says Dr. Main. “People don’t realize that straighter teeth can improve oral health simply because they are easier to brush and floss than misaligned teeth. Today’s orthodontic treatments are geared with the adult patient in mind, either with clear appliances, shorter total treatment time, or both.” Another factor in the practice growth is the arrival of Mark’s son Ian Leopold to the practice. Dr. Ian Leopold graduated from UOP in June of 2010

and started practicing full-time October 1, 2010. He’s added additional late evening and convenient Saturday appointments to the schedule to make it easy for working professionals to get to the dentist. “It’s amazing what Ian’s prepared to do right out of school.” says Mark Leopold. “His skills are impeccable, and he’s only going to get better. Knowing that when Nick and I are ready to retire, Ian and Craig are here to continue our legacy brings me a great deal of satisfaction.” Not that anyone is going anywhere. Mark and Ian are attending the California Implant Institute, a one-year comprehensive fellowship program in implant dentistry that includes 170 hours of lectures, laboratory sessions, live surgical demonstrations, and cadaver workshops, building up to 570 hours of advanced training. At the conclusion of the program this July, both Mark and Ian will begin placing implants in the office. “Implants have been around for over 40 years, and in many instances are considered the standard of care for replacing teeth.” says Ian Leopold. “Now with the installation of our new digital i-Cat® Cone Beam CT, we provide state-of-the-art imaging to guide our implant placements. I find the accuracy of this enhanced imaging essential to planning and placing implants. It just makes the most sense—for both the patient and the dentist.”

7

Doing what’s best for the patient is always the #1 focus at Leopold, Murphy, and Main. Examples include providing laser decontamination in hygiene, and taking digital x-rays for reduced radiation exposure. For Dr. Craig Main, that meant investing in a Surgical Operating Microscope for endodontic treatment. “Use of the dental microscope in endodontics sets the stage for long-term function and biological success, helping patients remain free of pain.” says Dr. Main. “It provides better visualization, improved treatment quality, and ideal treatment ergonomics, all of which result in a better outcome for the patient.” While all the doctors value being able to provide care to their patients using the most up-to-date techniques and equipment, prevention is their highest priority. “We are all focused on the overall health and well-being of our patients.” says Nick Murphy. “Research has confirmed the oral-systemic health link, and every day, more manifestations of this link become known. Good dental health can help prevent diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Periodontal disease has been linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, higher incidents of pre-term births, peri-implantitis, even certain types of pneumonia in older people.” As a founding member of the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health, Dr. Murphy helps all the doctors stay updated on the latest research in oral-systemic health. Understanding the emerging science-driven relationships between the mouth and the body—and applying that understanding to the care they provide—is at the heart of their philosophy as dentists and of their vision for the future. Together, with their combined wisdom and energy, they are actively involved in changing the public and professional attitudes and awareness related to the many oral-systemic connections. It’s this focus on patient education that sets them apart from most. As the exclusive representative for KSBY’s Healthy Living Program, Leopold, Murphy, and Main is working to bring common sense answers to the public’s most common dental questions. “We believe that helping people clearly understand their dental choices and the benefits of treatment and prevention enable them to make more informed choices about their care.” says Mark. “At the end of the day, it’s all about our patients.” says Nick. Patients can expect the highest quality of care available using the latest in technology, techniques, and information, with convenient evening and weekend appointments available. To learn more about Dr. Mark Leopold, Dr. Nicholas Murphy, Dr. Craig Main, or Dr. Ian Leopold, visit their website at slosmiles.com or their Healthy Living page on KSBY. com, or call 541-0550.

Your Community Bank is Ready to Lend!

Complete Implant Services that truly make you Smile. There are a lot of big grins flashing around the happiest town on Earth, and many owe their sparkle to Dr. Carol L. Phillips of Swiss Dental Center. Since 1984, her pioneering methods have kept San Luis Obispo at the forefront of implant dentistry, and her new location, with its modern equipment and vintage Hollywood décor, promise to propel her practice into the future. On the office walls, TV screens display pictures of decaying, diseased, and missing teeth that transform into perfectly-aligned, pearly whites. These “before and after” shots show what amazing work Dr. Phillips and her team can do. “Some people have low confidence or they have trouble eating because of bad or missing teeth,” said Dr. Phillips. “They come to us with a desired result, and it’s up to us to make their wish come true. It’s very gratifying to solve those problems once and for all.” Swiss Dental is the only game in town with a total focus on tooth implants and reconstruction dentistry, and that focus has led to mastery. In fact, Dr. Phillips developed the FDA approved system for implants that dentists use across the country. Advances in technology allow Swiss Dental to build new teeth from resin molds and snap them into a Ti-

tanium alloy substructure that is secured directly into the jaw bone. They use only the latest techniques and technology, but how does Dr. Philips stay abreast of all the developments? As a Diplomate of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry she is actively involved in advancing the science and practice of implant dentistry. “I teach the refresher courses,” she said. Her office includes a large classroom, which she uses for her “Pathway Learning Series” an annual hands on continuum for other dentists. The classroom’s big screen TV lets visiting dentists watch Dr. Phillips perform live surgeries. “Implants are statistically the most reliable thing in dentistry,” said Dr. Phillips. “If you’re missing teeth, you owe it to yourself to get more information about your options.” Swiss Dental Center accepts most insurance plans. For more information, call the office at 541-1004, or visit SwissDentalCenter.com.

OHIO VALLEY REFINERY RECLAMATION DRIVE IS A HIT IN PASO ROBLES AND STARTS NEXT WEEK IN GROVER BEACH! They are paying out right on the spot for my stuff. Unbelievable! By David Morgan STAFF WRITER A spokesperson for the event said he expects to spend in excess of $200,000.00 this week for vintage items and precious metals from local residents. At previous events: One person sold an old Gibson guitar that was purchased in the 1960’s for less than $250.00. A collector at the event paid him $2,175.00 for it. Another person had a pocket watch collection that sold for $4,600.00, with one of the watches making up $375.00 of the $4,600.00 total. A husband and wife brought in a box of old jewelry, wrist watches, coins and 2 German daggers from WWII and left $785.00 richer. This is cool that something like this would come here to our town. Where else would this stuff ever be sold? The Refinery has teamed up with the collectors for a 24 month tour of the United States, both big and small towns, to dig up hidden gems.

By David Morgan STAFF WRITER The first days of the 5 day reclamation drive in Paso Robles were a hit with those looking to sell their gold and silver coins. An estimated 55 people left the event with over $200 from old class rings, wedding bands, herringbones and gold teeth. Coins dated 1964 and earlier were bringing big premiums as well. Silver dollars, halves and quarters arrived in large quantities. Lots of gold coins were also brought in. On the other side of the room were representatives from the Antique Association. They were purchasing all types of guitars, large currency bills dated

Company officials reported spending over $90,000 the first day of the event, alone. Brian Eades, with the Ohio Valley, said, “We have had an overwhelming turnout this first day, and we expect to get more busy every day this week.” The event continues today in Paso Robles and opens next week in Grover Beach. Dog-Paddling to health… Splash Helps Dogs with Warm Water Swimming When her beloved dog Abbie was hit by a car, Chris Barrett quickly discovered the need for a safe, clean canine swimming facility on the Central Coast. Abbie’s recovery depended on a regimen of warm water swimming to help heal her injuries and strengthen her muscles. So Barrett began training under Susan Marino, founder/owner of Angel’s Gate

Community Based Real Estate Lending Since 1989 In today’s more stringent credit market our goal is to help people obtain real estate fi nancing by matching up investors in our community that can meet the needs of today’s borrowers. Because we work with private investors, we have more flexible lending criteria, with the ability to close loans that might not meet a traditional

Animal Hospice and Rehabilitation Center in Long Island, New York. She opened Splash, a warm water canine swim facility, in 2003, bringing all that Abbie taught her about what dogs can do under difficult circumstances to the task. Barrett now has 8 years’ experience, and is currently enrolled at Purdue University’s distance learning program for Veterinary Technician Certification. Warm water swimming is an excellent form of non-weight bearing / low impact exercise that can safely reestablish lost muscle strength, coordination, cardiovascular strength, and range of motion. Warm water swimming can help those suffering from arthritis, dysplasia, joint and muscle injury, and neuromuscular conditions, as well as those recovering from orthopedic surgeries and obesity. And it’s a great way to cross-train canine athletes!

CENTRAL COAST BUSINESS REVIEW 2011

Marian Hospice Making Every Moment Count Whether it’s a visit to a physician’s office, a patient’s home, or to a hospitalized patient, Marian Hospice is available to help terminally ill patients, their families, physicians and healthcare workers. Since 1987, Marian Hospice has been providing assistance with pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, practical assistance and all issues related to end-of-life care. When terminally ill patients are asked where they want to spend their last days, most will tell you they want to be at home, in their own surroundings, with their own family, friends and pets. If patients are referred to a Medicare certified hospice agency, it is likely that they will be able to end their days in their home, with the support of an interdisciplinary team of hospice professionals. Yet, less than one third of the population currently utilizes hospice care due to a lack of knowledge about hospice care and available services. Since hospice focuses on providing comprehensive physical, emotional and spiritual care to patients and families at the most critical point in their lives, experts recommend services for a minimum of three months to provide the most benefit to patients and their loved ones. This time also enables the Hospice Team to develop a relationship with the patient and family in order to better respond to medical, psycho-social and spiritual needs as the patient’s condition further deteriorates. For patients and their families, there is a lack of knowledge about hospice services and frequently, a hesitation about being “ready” for end-of-life care. Some patients and their loved ones have a hard time

accepting that there are no further treatments that might change the course of their illness. Others are very ready for hospice care, but don’t know enough to ask for it. Most studies confirm that all patients look to their physicians for direction at this difficult time. Marian Hospice helps Central Coast physicians evaluate their patients for hospice eligibility. Marian Hospice nurses meet with patients and their families to determine the patient’s goals for care and to review available resources. Some of the key areas to look for that might indicate a hospice referral is appropriate include: · Cancer with no further treatment options or decline in treatment · Any intervention that is no longer effective or desired · Increased need for assistance in personal care · Difficulty in managing pain or other symptoms · Progressive dementia or Alzheimer’s disease · Desire to avoid frequent hospitalizations or ER visits · Weight loss Michael P. Schrager, M.D., and Richard L. Zachrich, M.D., have served as Medical Directors

15

for Marian Hospice since 2004. Drs. Schrager and Zachrich care for a large geriatric population in their practice and know how important it is to talk to their terminally ill patients and families at an earlier stage in treatment. “More frequently, physicians are realizing it’s important to talk about end-of-life care with their patients, especially before a crisis occurs,” says Dr. Zachrich. “We are seeing more and more patients proactively planning their end-of-life care in order to avoid long-term hospital stays and precious time spent away from their family and friends. For many patients this means doing whatever it takes to remain in their home care setting,” says Dr. Schrager. “Several trips to the hospital or to the ER within a short period of time can be stressful for the patient and family. Family members often relay to us, after their loved one has died that, ‘I wish I had known about Marian Hospice sooner’ or ‘I had no idea what a difference Marian Hospice would make in helping me care for my loved one at home.’” One of the beautiful things about the types of services offered by Marian Hospice is that the organization also offers respite care to families. Even with the best of intentions, families are frequently unaware of the strain on their physical and emotional state as a result of caring for a loved one on a 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a- week basis. Marian Hospice’s respite services can offer help with bathing and personal care, homemaking assistance and volunteer support. In addition, respite care can include a transfer to a skilled nursing facility for up to five days to give the family needed relief. Another important service offered by Marian Hospice is bereavement care for the family and/or loved ones. Bereavement care includes individual counseling, group support, telephone support and mailings that include information about the grief process. Marian Hospice offers these services and more to all who need them. Ultimately, Marian Hospice helps end-of-life patients and their families live as comfortably and as fully as possible, all in order to truly make every moment count.

Mike has had the opportunity to learn from the biggest and most respected names in the industry, including Dave Palumbo and Author L. Rea. Mike was also a supplement and nutrition adviser to UFC fighter Joe “Daddy” Stevenson leading up to his main event fight at UFC 95. “The problem most consumers face as it relates to the supplement industry is the sheer amount of products available to them. It can be quite overwhelming. If you do a web search for fat-loss or muscle-building supplements, you had better have packed a lunch—you will be reading for hours and probably be more confused than when you started,” Mike said. That is one of the reasons Outlaw Sports Nutrition was opened: to offer people the absolute best products on the market and someone with the knowledge to guide them through their decision-making process.

Next, train plants to grow vertically by using stakes, Aframes or strings for light and to save space. Get off to a good start by starting seeds in a grow box & transplanting only strong and healthy plants. Apply fertilizer before planting and be sure to control weeds after. Water only the roots to conserve. Last, careful pruning can help to produce a higher yield by removing leaves that

do not support the plant or its fruit. Rest in the knowledge of knowing exactly where your food is coming from and enjoy the harvest!
