The importance of pathways A message from the FYA team Hooks for change’ is a criminological concept arguing that people stay away from crime when they are exposed to ‘turning points’ in life. As we all know, Young people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities suffer the most from educational inequality and lack of social mobility, ever-widening the gap of achievement and representation across institutions and powerful positions. Not only are people from these communities stigmatised by racial bias, but they are more likely to be from impoverished areas which also has a direct correlation to educational attainment and social mobility. Furthermore, young people from these communities are more likely to be victims of crime, and less likely to have access to opportunities inside and outside of school to change their position. It is important to address this injustice because it has the potential to not only show institutions the importance of elevating these young people, but also offers them a chance to grow, move away from potentially dangerous situations, and help them explore opportunities available for them.

Hooks 4 Change project Building A Better Future We set up this project to increase social capital, designing 'Hooks 4 Change' packages including: Creative & Career Opportunities In Nottingham 2021 brochure Mind mapping & goal setting activities Stationery & notepads Online Careers event We would like to say a huge thank you to all our partners and their local community organisations for helping us put together these packages.

Nottingham unesco city of literature Our vision as UNESCO City of Literature is for a city where everyone is reading and writing their way to a better life. We believe in the power of literature as a reflection of humanity and a way for everyone to better understand each other and the world we live in.

Letters of solidarity Letters of Solidarity is a writing campaign for young people aged 14 to 25. Government-imposed quarantine has been long and gruelling. For many, seeing friends and family meant relying on technology, and isolation from people and our routines quickly became commonplace. Letters of Solidarity asks: what was it like for you? We want young people to tell the world about their experience of lockdown and offer messages of support to neighbours, friends, and family in Nottingham, across the country and world.

BBC Novels that shaped our world Nottingham has been selected by the BBC and Libraries Connected to run a series of workshops on the theme of ‘Politics, Power & Protest’ – stories about the ideas, people and power struggles that shaped our world. Nottingham City of Literature are running three online workshop sessions on 6th, 13th and 20th March 2021, championing women writers and activists, and discussing the themes of politics, power and protest. Each workshop will be open to the public, with free places available for young people aged 1425. Visit their website to get involved in all their opportunities and events.
