A Program on the Rise

Newcomers

Freshmen Cedric De Zutter, Johnny Grimal, David O’Hare and Joe Salisbury make up the largest recruiting class in program history and these newcomers are already setting the bar high. Salisbury and O’Hare enter the spring season ranked nationally in doubles. De Zutter and Grimal amassed winning records during tournament play in the fall, with Grimal taking the crown in the top singles flight at the UTC Steve Baras Classic. Daniel Shidler, who joins the Tigers from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, is also donning Blue and Gray for the first time and brings veteran collegiate experience to the young squad. With so many fresh faces, the future of Memphis tennis looks bright.

Returners With so many new arrivals in 2011, K.C. Griffin, David Henry, Leon Nasemann, Jordan Smith and John Taylor will have the responsibility of providing leadership for the inexperienced group. In 2010, Henry led the way, going 10-10 at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 slots in addition to Taylor’s strong performance at the No. 4-6

University of Memphis

positions where he assembled a 12-6 mark. In doubles, Henry and Smith posted a 14-4 record at the No. 1 slot, reaching as high as No. 47 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls. This year, expectations are high for all five returning letterwinners to step up and settle the young cubs into the collegiate game in order to produce results on the court.

Schedule In dual matches alone, the Tigers are slated to face six teams ranked in the top 75 according to ITA polls released on Jan. 4, 2011, and will likely take on additional ranked opponents at the Sunbelt Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in April. Memphis tennis prides itself in slating some of the toughest competition in the country in order to push and challenge the skillset of its players, and 2011 will be no different. 2011 men’s tennis preview Home of the Tigers The Racquet Club of Memphis has been the Mid-South’s premier tennis facility since it opened its doors in 1974. The Racquet Club has hosted the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship, an annual stop on the ATP Men’s World Tour each February since 1976. In 2002, the Racquet Club of Memphis also became host to the Cellular South Cup, an ATP Women’s World Tour event, held during the same time as the men’s event. The Tigers love their new home, but plans to enhance and expand are already in the works. The final phase of renovations at The Racquet Club is set to begin soon and will consist of sprucing up the outdoor courts with an outdoor plaza complete with refreshment stand and tables, along with the addition of covered grandstand seating that will help fashion a top collegiate tennis environment.

An International Family While some members of the 2010-11 men’s tennis team grew up in Tennessee, others hail from all across the world. Six student-athletes on this year’s roster join the U of M from international locations: Canada, Ireland, England, Spain, Germany and Belgium. Head coach Paul Goebel and the veteran players have the task of bringing these individuals together as a team; and furthermore, a family.

The Racquet Club: Courts The sign at the front says it all: The Racquet Club of Memphis is the official home of Tiger tennis. In October of 2009 the Tigers moved in, but the 2010-11 season marks the first full year that the U of M tennis programs will call the Mid-South’s premiere facility ‘home.’ It rivals the finest clubs in the country with 186,000 square feet of facilities, including six recently-refurbished top-of-the-line, post-tension system hard courts as well as 11 indoor courts. If you’re a tennis player, it’s tough to find a better place to practice and play.

Beyond The Bluff City Hitting the road is beneficial in many ways for the Tigers. First, it allows the Tigers to take on some of the country’s principal programs. Furthermore, traveling provides opportunities for the team to bond. This season, Memphis will travel to Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas as well as in the state of Tennessee.

The Racquet Club: Tiger Den Oh, the luxuries of being a Tiger tennis player. Between practices and matches, Tiger netters now have an exclusive space that allows them to work hard and play hard off the court. The state-of-the-art player lounge, known as the “Tiger Den,” features a training room, study area, kitchen, private locker rooms, racquet stringing room and offices for the coaching staff. The striking den boasts four 48-inch big-screen televisions, which allow student-athletes to study film of their performances on the court or simply kick back on the leather couches and relax while watching television or playing on the most popular gaming systems.

Typical Day as a Tiger 7 to 8 a.m. Weight Room: “I love morning workouts because they’re helping me get stronger and prevent injuries down the road.” -Cedric De Zutter, Freshman 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Class: “I enjoy my classes. I continue to get more and more knowledge for my future job.” -Daniel Shidler, Junior 12 to1 p.m. Lunch: “All you can eat. Enough said.” -David O’Hare, Freshman 1 to 2 p.m. Athletic Training Room: “We are lucky to have access to such a great training room and great trainers. The trainers are crucial to our performance on the tennis courts.” -K.C. Griffin, Redshirt Sophomore 2 to 5 p.m. Practice: “At Memphis, I finally have great practice partners and we have a great mix of conditioning, weights and match practice.” -Leon Nasemann, Redshirt Junior 5 to 6 p.m. Dinner: “It’s awesome being able to go out to eat at some great restaurants around Memphis or go home and cook and hang out with my roommates.” -Joe Salisbury, Freshman 7 to 9 p.m. Study Hall: “It’s nice to have a place to go study besides my house and it’s only for student-athletes.”-David Henry, Junior

Paul Goebel’s sixth season at the helm of the Memphis men’s tennis team ended at 11-12; and for Goebel, it marked the second season in a row the program earned a double-digit win total. The season began adversely with the Tigers dropped four of their first five dual matches, though three of those were to ranked opponents Tulsa (34th), Oklahoma State (25th) and Iowa (58th). Against Tulsa, Leon Nasemann picked up wins in No. 1 singles in his match with Philip Stephens, 7-6, 5-6, 10-6 before teaming with John Taylor to take down the No. 2 doubles duo of Marko Ballok and Alistair Barnes, 8-6. Memphis’ lone win during its first five dual matches came in a 7-0 drubbing of Kennesaw State. Jordan Smith dropped just one game during the day’s matches, defeating Gokolp Ozdemir, 6-0, 6-0 and teaming with David Henry to win No. 1 singles against Gianni Kubin and Tyler Mills, 8-1. After a rough start the Tigers found their way, ripping off four wins in a row against Rhodes, North Alabama, Itawamba Community College and Meridian Community College. Smith and Henry won all four of their No. 1 doubles matches, while Michael Gaerthoeffner won four singles matches while dropping just four games. A three-match losing streak followed, including a defeat by 11th-ranked Ole Miss, but the Memphis netters rebounded with victories against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Murray State. Against Murray State, Smith had an epic No. 2 singles match against Jorge Caetano, winning a 6-7, 7-5, 10-7 slugfest.

A fiercely-contested battle with Louisiana-Lafayette ended in a 4-3 defeat in spite of the doubles point going to the Tigers. Memphis rebounded by trouncing Birmingham-Southern, 7-0, but the euphoria over that win was negated by a loss to rival UAB in a 5-2 decision. The Tigers picked up a big dual victory at Southern Miss, escaping with a 4-3 victory behind Henry’s No. 2 singles win and No. 1 doubles tandem victory with Smith, running the duo’s season record at that point to 12-2. A three-match stay at the Buck Bouldin Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn., resulted in a 1-2 record for the Blue and Gray. The Tigers defeated Chattanooga in a 5-2 decision, sandwiched around losses to host MTSU (4-3) and North Florida (4-3). The Tigers had some especially stellar play during the first round at the CUSA Championships, beginning with a solid 4-1 victory over Tulane. Smith led the charge with a tiebreaker thriller against Tulane’s Shaye Wali, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). The season ended the same way it began, with the Tigers matched up against Tulsa, this time ranked 36th in the nation. The Tigers were dealt a 4-0 defeat and so ended the 2010 spring season for the U of M netters.

Memphis Head Coach Paul Goebel Looks to Continue to Guide The Tigers to Success During the 2011 Spring Season Paul Goebel is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Tiger men’s tennis program and 11th overall season with the program after spending the four seasons prior to 2004-05 as an assistant coach at Memphis. Goebel has continued to build on the framework left in place by previous head coach Phil Chamberlain, continuing to put together one of the toughest schedules in the country, and adding first-class regional and international talent to the line-up. Heading into the 2010-11 season, Goebel inked the largest recruiting class in program history, signing four freshmen from overseas with the U of M. His incoming class includes the first Belgian ever recruited, Cedric De Zutter, and the previously fourth-ranked U18 junior in Ireland, David O’Hare. For the second year in a row, Goebel has coached a doubles pair into the national rankings, with O’Hare and Joe Salisbury ranked 52nd in the country entering the spring campaign. Jordan Smith and David Henry, who tallied a 14-4 record at the No. 1 doubles spot, wrapped up the 2009-10 season as the 82nd-ranked tandem in the nation. In 2008-09, Jorge Vazquez, became only the second Memphis Tiger in the program’s history to be named first team All-C-USA joining former Tiger and current Lady Tiger head coach Lee Taylor Walker, who was named to the C-USA All-Decade team in 2005. Vazquez peaked at the No. 51 spot in the College Tennis Online rankings during the 2009 season, after earning wins over four players ranked among the Top 125 tennis players in the nation, two of which were Top 50 players. Vazquez finished the season ranked No. 106 in the country. Off of the court, Goebel has continued to yield outstanding performances from his team academically. In 2010, Michael Gaerthoeffner was named Conference USA Men’s Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year, in addition to being tabbed an ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican, following in the footsteps of Benedikt

Fischer, who amassed many of the same accolades in 2008-09. The Tigers have also earned ITA All-Academic Team selections in each of Goebel’s first six seasons. In 2008, he brought back another familiar face to Tiger tennis in former U of M tennis player Mark Finnegan as his assistant coach. Finnegan competed for both Goebel and Chamberlain from 2003-04. Finnegan will continue to serve as the lead assistant in 2009-10. The Tigers put up their best season under Goebel’s guidance in 2008-09. Memphis finished with 14 wins, surpassing Goebel’s previous high of 12 wins in his first season as head coach in 2004-05. A native of Hendersonville, N.C., Goebel came to Memphis after a stellar career at Middle Tennessee, where he was part of the school’s first All-America doubles team which earned him a place in the MTSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Goebel became the second men’s tennis player to be inducted into the Middle Tennessee Hall of Fame. A member of the MTSU team from 19901994, Goebel served as the team’s captain from 1992-1994 and was a four-time, all-conference player. He was also named the student-athlete of the year in 1994.

Former Tiger tennis player Mark Finnegan has committed to another year as the assistant coach for the Memphis men’s tennis program under head coach Paul Goebel. This will be Finnegan’s third year assisting the men’s program and his fourth as an assistant for his Alma mater. Finnegan served as an assistant for the women’s tennis team for one year following his graduation from Memphis in 2004. As assistant coach, Finnegan’s main duties are international recruiting, private lessons for the players and overall development of Memphis’ student-athletes. In Finnegan’s first year as assistant coach, the Tigers produced their most successful season under Goebel, finishing with a 14-11 mark. Finnegan also helped coached Jorge Vazquez to All-C-USA first team honors. Finnegan graduated from Memphis in 2004 with a degree in finance after playing two seasons following his transfer from Georgia Southern. He battled a shoulder injury his first season for the Tigers, but bounced back to post a 28-21 career singles mark in a Tiger uniform. In doubles, Finnegan posted a 12-6 mark with former Tiger assistant coach Alex Jago.

Former Memphis men’s tennis player Michael Jetter is serving his second year as a volunteer assistant coach for the Tigers, joining Mark Finnegan as former Tiger tennis players serving as assistants for their former coach Paul Goebel. Jetter, a member of the Memphis men’s tennis team for the 2005-06 season, compiled a record of 6-12 in singles during his one year as a Tiger. Jetter competed at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 position for the U of M. In doubles, Jetter teamed with Garrison Pilant to go 9-6 in doubles, the second-best win total of any Tiger doubles team for the 2006-06 season. In his only fall for the Tigers, Jetter had the most success of any member of the Memphis roster, going 8-4. He advanced to the finals of the Middle Tennessee State Fall Invitational. Pilant and Jetter also advanced to the finals of the doubles bracket at the MTSU Fall Invite. Jetter is originally from Neuenberg, Germany. He is the son of Gundi and Karl-Eugen Jetter. He was the first Tiger signee from Germany, paving the way for talented tennis players such as Benedikt Fischer, Michael Gaerthoeffner and Leon Nasemann. Jetter graduated from the U of M in 2007 with a B.A. in economics and is currently in pursuit of his Ph.D in the same field from the University of Memphis.

Prior to his arrival at the U of M as a player, Finnegan had a successful stint at Georgia Southern where he was honored as the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2002. Finnegan was also named to the AllSouthern Conference team and was the team MVP for Georgia Southern. After his graduation and a stint with the University of Memphis women’s tennis team, Finnegan returned to his native Ireland and worked for the National Irish Bank. In January of 2007, he returned to the U.S. and went to work as the Program Director at the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Fla. There, Finnegan worked with a high performance academy and coached highly ranked juniors in the state of Florida. Finnegan also spent a period of time at the Point Clear Tennis Club with fellow Irish touring pro Joseph O’Dwyer. While at Point Clear, Finnegan coached several players who were highly ranked in the state of Alabama, many of whom now compete collegiately around the country. Finnegan married his wife, Molly, in May of 2008. The couple currently resides in Memphis.

In doubles action, Joe Salisbury and David O’Hare were an unlikely duo to make the quarterfinals in their first tournament together, but defeated doubles teams from South Carolina, Mercer and Winthrop en route to the final eight of the flight. The following weekend, De Zutter continued the strong beginning to his college career by making an inspired trek to the draw finals of the UTC Steve Baras Classic. He lost to UNCGreensboro’s Zack Reece in the final match (2-6, 6-2, 7-5), but not before storming through opponents from Lee University, Jacksonville State and Kennesaw State. De Zutter and Johnny Grimal also reached the semifinals in doubles action; another U of M duo, K.C. Griffin and Daniel Shidler, also reached the semi’s at UTC. While part of the U of M squad was in Chattanooga, Jordan Smith, David Henry and O’Hare were battling some of the elite tennis players in the country at the All-American prequalifiers. Henry advanced to the second round as an individual, while he and Smith, the 47thranked doubles duo in the nation, advanced to the Round of 32 before falling to 49th-ranked Jarmere Jenkins and Alex Domijan, from Virginia, 8-4. O’ Hare and Smith would find individual success at the Ohio Valley Regionals, Oct. 22; both advanced to the Round of 32 in their draws, before bowing out. O’Hare faced the toughest test, in eighth-ranked Eric Quigley from the University of Kentucky. O’Hare took Quigley down to the wire in both sets before falling, 7-5, 7-5. The entire squad reconvened at the Louisville Winter Invitational. John Taylor won the top singles flight, dispatching foes from Drake, Chicago State and U of M teammate Daniel Shidler; Taylor partnered with Grimal and the duo teamed up for the doubles championship in an epic 9-8 (7-5) final against Drake’s Mauricio Ballivian and Jonathan Hadash. The Tigers ended the fall slate at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. Griffin and De Zutter advanced to the draw quarterfinals in their first tournament as a duo, while Griffin and Shidler each made semifinal appearances in singles.

City of Memphis

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and downto-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekendlong event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as

University of Memphis

the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. Memphis is also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis International Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day.

Memphis Is... • Named for its Egyptian sister city on the Nile • The largest city in Tennessee & the 17th largest city in the United States • Centered in the middle of the nation’s population • The Pork BBQ Capital of the world • The home of The Pyramid, the third largest pyramid in the world • Ranked by the travel industry as one of the top 20 destinations for an athletic event • Ranked as one of the nation’s top 10 convention centers and locations • The nation’s largest spot cotton-trading market • The hardwood capital of the world • The home of the world’s largest cargo airport • The third-largest rail center in the United States • The fourth-largest inland port in the United States • Home to the Memphis Zoo, one of only four zoos in the United States to exhibit giant pandas • The 47th Best Sports City, according to The Sporting News 2010 list

University of Memphis

For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologicallysavvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universities; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recognized and respected throughout the academic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most historic and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto yearbook was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became president - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to

University of Memphis

a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by another name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Memphis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of more than 23,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five state-approved Centers of Excellence.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last eight years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Championship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 15 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed four consecutive league championships from 2007-10. Johnson is currently spearheading his second major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Department. Included in the $12.9 million project is a new addition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadium that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice facility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes. Johnson’s first capital campaign was previously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign included a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex addition, a new basketball

University of Memphis

practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsorships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which includes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 studentathletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring. For the spring 2010 semester, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 studentathletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their degrees, marking the largest group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record.

31

Before taking over Tiger Athletics, Johnson was responsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons after serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.

Tiger Traditions When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tiger nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For over 35 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tiger Football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climatecontrolled trailer, always with police escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its Tiger Tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tiger fans young & old through the preservation of one of the world’s most recognizable endangered

species. The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred Football Boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on November 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane, and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Alabama. TOM II would serve with pride for 17 years through

2008, passing away on October 15th of that year. Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born August 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on November 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on November 22 during a football game against UCF.

The Logo The University of Memphis’ official logo was redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping Tiger coming out from behind the letter. The new logo is an “M” with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the “M.”

School Colors The University of Memphis’ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.
