Memphis has set the foundation for a successful program with a talented core led by the 2010 sophomore and junior classes. Leading the group will be juniors Parker Duncan, Cody McCoy and Thomas Shannon, along with sophomores J.J. Greer and Andreas Guentner. Greer and Guentner were both honored by the conference with C-USA All-Freshman picks. Guentner was also named to the All-C-USA third team. Senior Rory O’Connor will also be a leader for the team in 2010.

Tigers on the Tu be For the third season in a row Memphis will take to the tube for a fall contest. On Nov. 5, the long-time conference rivalry between UAB and Memphis will be showcased on Fox Soccer Channel’s “NSCAA Men’s Soccer Game of the Week”. The appearance will serve as the second time in two years that Memphis has appeared in the Fox Soccer Channel Friday night staple. The Tigers opened the season with the “Game of the Week” in 2009 against Bradley and used a late Parker Duncan goal to force overtime and an eventual 1-1 draw against the Braves. Memphis is 2-3-1 in games aired on television. In addition to the Bradley game, the Tigers also appeared in two games on CBS College Sports, losing to Conference USA foes Tulsa and SMU. Memphis’ two wins on television are an overtime victory in 2008 over No. 15 SMU and a comeback victory to capture the 2004 Conference USA Tournament Championship over UAB.

Upset-Minded

Forward

The Tigers have played the role of spoiler twice in the last two seasons after picking up upset victories over No. 15 SMU in a double overtime thriller in 2008 and a victory over No. 23 Drake at the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in 2009. Richie Grant’s squads have defeated six ranked opponents in his 11 years at the helm.

Adding to the Arsenal The Memphis Tigers add 11 new players to the fold heading into the 2010 season. The group of newcomers include two collegiate transfers, five American players and four international talents. The new additions include Atlanta, Ga., native Jamal Keene, who should add to the Tiger attack, as well as a couple of forwards who add size to Memphis’ front line, Austin Gross and Martin Methodist transfer Tiago Reichert. In the center of the park, Liam Collins, a native of Skibbereen, Ireland, will compete with several returnees. On the defensive end, the Tigers add left-footer B.J. Williams from Mississippi, as well as Belgian defender Maxim Van Dyck and Brazilian Joao Paulo Cappellanes. Freshman Martin Hunter will compete with Jordan Leedle for the starting netminder job in 2010. Gardner-Webb transfer Dennis Kennetz, along with Gordy Gurson and Tanner Thompson, will also look to contribute for the Tigers.

The 1993 film about Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, a walk-on football player at Notre Dame who became the first and only player to be carried off the field at Notre Dame Stadium, has found its soccer equivalent in the Bluff City. Eric Trujillo, a senior walk-on from Southaven, Miss., became the first player to make the team via a walk-on tryout in 2006 and has given his all in training for the last four years for the Tiger soccer program. The 5-8 145 midfielder/ forward quickly became known as “Rudy” after his football equivalent. Trujillo, has only appeared nine games in his career but has been a vital cog for Memphis since making the team. He has one goal in his career, which came on a header against Centenary during his redshirt freshman season in 2007. Trujillo will play his final season with the Blue and Gray as one of only two seniors on a young squad in 2010.

Grant C l osing In Memphis head coach Richie Grant is closing in on becoming the winningest coach in Memphis soccer history. The Tiger boss who has manned the sideline since 1999, has 102 wins heading into the 2010 season. He needs just eight wins to tie all-time winningest coach Chris Bartels, who had 110 wins in his 11 seasons from 1988-98. Grant eclipsed the 100-win milestone in 2009 with a 1-0 victory over FIU on Oct. 17 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The native of Dublin, Ireland, enters his 12th campaign with the Memphis program in 2010. He has accumulated five seasons with 10 or more wins during his time with the Tigers. Grant came to Memphis from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., where he coached from 1995-98.

Midfielders

Returning to lead Memphis up front will be sophomore J.J. Greer and junior Parker Duncan. The pair accounted for 18 Tiger points last season. Greer, a product of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, started off strong with one goal and five assists in the opening month of his collegiate career and was ranked in the top 10 nationally for assists per game. The C-USA AllFreshman honoree is a creative passer who helps create for his frontline mates. In two years with the Memphis program, Duncan has accounted for 10 goals and four assists. Even though he might be used some as an outside midfielder, the Johnson City, Tenn., native will still look to influence teams with his relentless pressure of opposing defenders. Look for redshirt freshman Mark Sherrod to have an instant impact at forward. The ESPN Rise All-American out of Knoxville, Tenn., will add his 6-3 frame to the lineup in 2010 after missing his freshman season due to injury. The Tigers will also rely on Martin Methodist transfer Tiago Reichert and Tulsa, Okla., native Austin Gross at the position. Both players will join with Sherrod to add height to the Memphis attack. Reichert, a 6-1 player from Francisco Beltrao, Brazil, helped Martin Methodist advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship with seven goals and three assists in 2009. Gross, known as “Stretch” by his teammates, is another six-footer who will help add to the attack. Newcomer Gordy Gurson will also provide depth at forward.

Leading the returnees at the midfield position will be junior Cody McCoy, a defensive midfielder who has started 26 games in two years in the center of the park for the Tigers. Also returning will be Memphis soccer’s “Mr. Versatile”, Andreas Guentner. The sophomore from Regensburg, Germany, quickly proved his utility in 2009 by being a force in the back four and the center of the park. Guentner, a All-CUSA third team selection, as well as a C-USA All-Freshman pick, had two goals and one assist last season. Hugo Mondragon also returns to the fray. The outside midfielder missed the start of the season after suffering an injury in the preseason but quickly got involved when he returned, finishing with two goals in seven starts. In addition to being attacking forces at forward, Parker Duncan, Jordan Johnson and J.J. Greer, also possess the ability to contribute as midfielders. Adding to the arsenal at midfield in 2010 will be freshmen Liam Collins, a native of Skibbereen, Ireland, and Jamal Keene, an Atlanta, Ga., product. Eric Trujillo, known as “Rudy” to his teammates, will also provide depth at midfield as a senior who has been with the team for four seasons after making the team via walk-on tryout in 2006. Newcomers Gordy Gurson, Dennis Kennetz, Jr., and redshirt freshman Adam Thornton will also provide depth at midfielder.

The Tigers return a solid core at the back of the pitch heading into the 2010 season. Although coach Richie Grant will have to replace team captain and 2009 All-C-USA second team pick Rick Alleman, junior Thomas Shannon seems poised to fill Alleman’s leadership role and possibly his role as a central defender. The native of Broken Arrow, Okla., has started 29 games in two years for the U of M. At the end of last season, Shannon proved his worth as Memphis’ penalty kick specialist. He went 3-for-3 with three goals in the final four games of the season including the decisive game-winner in the final game of the season against South Carolina. Also returning in the back four will be senior Rory O’Connor, who manned the other center back position in 2009. O’Connor has notched 23 starts in two years after transferring from Lambuth. Andreas Guentner also returns as a potential impact player in the back four. Guentner could see time at defender, as well as midfielder in 2010 after being named to the All-CUSA third team as a freshman. Jordan Johnson, Hugo Mondragon and Chris Porter also return as experienced players in the back four. In addition to a deep core of returnees, Memphis will welcome freshmen Maxim Van Dyck, from Blankenberge, Belgium, Texan Will Garcia and Tennessee product Tanner Thompson. Redshirt freshman Adam Thornton and GardnerWebb transfer Dennis Kennetz, Jr., will also provide depth in the back four.

G oalkeeper s In 2010, the competition for the starter in goal will center around sophomore Jordan Leedle and incoming freshman Martin Hunter. Leedle, a native of Franklin, Tenn., has been in the Tiger program for the last two years but has found himself behind Michael Goodlett, who played his final game as a U of M footballer in the fall of 2009. Leedle assumed the starting netminder job during the spring and proved to be a steady force in goal for the Tigers. Hunter, a transplant from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, has played for the Sunderland AFC U18 squad prior to arriving in Memphis. Leedle and Hunter replace Goodlett, who ended his career with the third-best career goals against average in the program’s history. Goodlett finished his final campaign with Memphis in 2009 with a 1.27 goals against average in 16 starts. He racked up 59 saves and had six clean sheets in 2009.

ROBERT Sausaman Assistant Coach (1st Season)

University/Program RKAVIC Tennessee Rush Soccer Club University of Memphis

Robert Sausaman joins his former school’s staff for the 2010 season. Sausaman will become a coach for the first time after spending the last year as a graduate student at the U of M in Sports and Leisure Commerce and Business Administration. As a defender under Richie Grant from 2005-08, Sausaman understands the high level of expectations Grant holds his players and coaches to. Sausaman routinely met and exceeded those expectations during his four years in the blue-and-gray, starting 43 of his 67 appearances during his playing career. Sausaman tallied three goals and four assists during his four years of back-line work for the Tigers, participating in Sausaman was part of a stout 2007 defense as a junior that held opponents to a conference-low 0.89 goals per game and helped earn seven clean sheets for the Tigers. In 2008, Sausaman was one of six senior captains for a veteran Memphis squad. Sausaman was the 2007 recipient of the Tommy Smith Award, given each year since 2000 to the Tiger who best exemplifies high academic standards, dedication, love of the game and sportsmanship. Sausaman is the second Tommy Smith Award winner on Grant’s staff, joining inaugural winner Nick Glaser. ‘Sauso’ was a standout in the classroom as well while completing his undergraduate work, becoming a two-time ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team Member and a recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. He was also a three-time honoree on the C-USA All-Academic Team. Sausaman also has a feel for the national level, having played for Florida’s 87 Olympic Development Program in high school. In his first year of coaching, Sausaman will be leading an experienced backline that returns three starters in front of inexperienced keeping. It will be up to Sausaman’s charges to keep the heat off until the young keepers get some experience.

Remco de Jong enters his sixth season with the University of Memphis men’s soccer team as the volunteer goalkeeping coach. De Jong has helped the U of M goalkeepers become some of the best in the league. Under de Jong, former U of M keeper Tyler Strom had the lowest goals-against average in the conference in 2007 with 0.92 and had the third-best save percentage with .791. Strom’s 1.17 career GAA also ranks second all-time at Memphis. De Jong was also responsible for goalkeeper Michael Goodlett’s development during his time at U of M. Coach Grant credits de Jong for helping Goodlett make progress toward becoming one of the top goalkeepers in the C-USA. Goodlett ended his career with the third-best career goals against average in the program’s history. “Remco is a product of one of the best programs in the world, so he brings a great deal of expertise to that position,” said Richie Grant. “He’s very committed to improving our young keepers.” A native of Amsterdam, de Jong started playing soccer at Ajax in the Netherlands when he was 10 years old. As a goalkeeper with Ajax, he played with John van het Schip, Stanly Menzo and Marco van Basten, who coached the Dutch National team to a Round of 16 appearance at the 2006 World Cup. In Holland, de Jong coached the amateur club RKAVIC from 1996-2000. He came to the U.S. in 2001 and began coaching goalkeepers with the West Tennessee Futbol Club Dragons. He is currently in his eighth year with the club that just recently merged with the Tennessee Rush Soccer Club. De Jong’s U-18 team, coached by three-time European Cup champion Johan Cruyff, won the Netherlands National Championship in 1981-82. His Ajax 3 team also won the national championship in 1985-86 and was a regional champion from 1985-88. De Jong’s main role in 2010 will be to help cultivate young goalkeepers Jordan Leedle and Martin Hunter. Leedle, a redshirt sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., has been with the program for two years, but has only seen action in one game. Hunter, a freshman from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, will compete with Leedle in the fall for the job as the Memphis netminder. De Jong is married to Angela de Jong-Angelici, a freelance writer/ producer and karate instructor in Bartlett. The couple has two children: a daughter, Alyssa, and a son, Luca.

2009: Season in Review Young Talent Shines In 2009, the Memphis soccer program experienced a youth movement with several freshman and sophomores playing vital roles for the Tigers. Of the 15 players that appeared in more than 10 games, 11 of them were either freshman or sophomores, with seven of those players starting more than 10 games on the season. Leading the youthful Tigers on the offensive half of the pitch were Parker Duncan and J.J. Greer. Duncan, a sophomore from Johnson City, Tenn., led the Tigers with six goals and one assist as a freshman. Duncan picked up where he left off at the start of the 2009 campaign with four goals and three assists in the first seven games of the season before being stymied defensively for the remainder of the season. Greer, a native Memphian, also made a noticeable impact on the Tiger attack from the onset of the season. In his first seven matches of his freshman year, Greer tallied one goal and five assists. The Christian Brothers High School graduate at one time was ranked in the top 10 in the nation with assists after playing a key role in setting up his teammates in the non-conference season. In the conference season, opposing defenses keyed their game plans toward stopping both Greer and Duncan. Greer was held without a goal or an assist in the final nine games of his freshman season, but was named to the C-USA All-Freshman team for his performance. On the defensive end, Thomas Shannon, a sophomore from Broken Arrow, Okla., emerged as a leader of the future for the Tigers at both right back and center back. Shannon also proved his worth as the Tigers’ goto man on penalty kicks where his value to the team was evident in the final four games. Shannon connected on penalty kicks against SIU-Edwardsville, Alabama A&M and South Carolina. His conversion against South Carolina proved to be the game winner for the U of M in the final game of the season for the Tigers. The Tigers also got a lift from versatile German transplant, Andreas Guentner. The freshman, who contributed both as a midfielder and defender, proved to be a vital asset for the U of M in 2009. Guentner finished the season with two goals and one assist on the year and a nod from the conference as an All-C-USA third team selection and C-USA All-Freshman pick. Guentner played as a center back, fullback and center midfielder at different points of the 2009 season, making a noticeable impact at all three spots.

Three Seniors Wrap Up Memphis C areers

16

The Tigers featured three seniors during the 2010 season led by defender Rick Alleman, who would cap his final season for the U of M being named to the All-CUSA second team. Brian Farrell, a native of Dunboyne, Ireland, and goalkeeper Michael Goodlett, originally from Bolton, Miss., were the other Tiger seniors in 2010. Alleman, the 2009 team captain for the U of M, made the move back to center back after spending his first three years as a left back for Memphis. Alleman made the transition look seamless as he did an admirable job of filling the shoes of 2008 All-C-USA first team selection Michael Coburn and fellow center back Thomas Hyland, both who went on to professional careers in Ireland. Alleman teamed with Rory O’Connor and Thomas Shannon at the center back position and Goodlett in net to help the Tigers to a 1.27 goals against average in 2009, improving on a 1.43 goals against average in 2008. The Tiger defense also shutout a total of six opponents dur-

ing the 2009 season, including C-USA foes FIU and South Carolina. Goodlett finished his Memphis career as a goalkeeper with a career goals against average of 1.36, which ranks third all time in front of all-conference selection and current Memphis women’s soccer head coach Brooks Monaghan. In 2009, Goodlett made great strides in goal posting several games where he kept the Tigers in the match, none moreso than the Tigers’ game against SIU-Edwardsville on Oct. 24. The Memphis netminder made several vital saves in a game where both goalkeepers controlled the game, but Goodlett held off long enough for Hugo Mondragon to score in the 83rd minute and Thomas Shannon to convert a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Farrell, the Tigers’ third senior, also made a key transition for the Tigers moving from forward where he had played his first three years back to center midfielder where he could control the Tiger offense. Farrell finished his senior season with one goal and two assists and was one of only three Tigers to start all 16 games (Goodlett and Shannon were the other two).

Tigers R ally In Fox S o ccer C hannel “Game of the Week” The Tigers opened the 2009 season on Sept. 5 in a late-night battle with the Bradley Braves in the Fox Soccer Channel “NSCAA Men’s Soccer Game of the Week”. Down 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Memphis sophomore forward Parker Duncan provided the U of M with late-game heroics after he used a back-heel tap in of a shot by Ryan Ruble to even the game at 1-1 and send the game to overtime. The game would ultimately go to two overtime periods before it ended in a 1-1 tie. The comeback victory would kick start a solid start for Memphis in the opening month of the season. The youthful Tigers would end the month of September with a 4-1-2 mark heading into their Conference USA slate.

O f f e n si v e O n sl au g h t L eads Tigers In Upset O v e r No. 2 3 D r a k e Memphis raced to a 4-1 lead using their offensive firepower against the No. 23 Drake Bulldogs at the 2009 UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in Birmingham on Sept. 13. Drake would use two late goals to close the deficit to 4-3, but the Tigers ultimately got the victory over their ranked foes from Des Moines, Iowa. In the game the U of M’s goals and assists came from eight different players, seven of which were either freshmen or sophomores. The upset of Drake proved to be the sixth upset over a ranked opponent during the Richie Grant era of Memphis men’s soccer (1999-10). In 2008, Memphis upset No. 15 SMU to pick up their first victory in the program’s history over their Conference USA rival.

D uncan Named Academic A l l - D i st ri c t Sophomore Parker Duncan built on a string of academic accomplishments for the men’s soccer program when he was named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in the fall of 2009. Duncan boasted a 3.99 Grade Point Average in Biology over his first two semesters at Memphis.

Duncan is the fifth Tiger to be named Academic All-District during Richie Grant’s tenure. He joins Jared Britcher, Andy Metcalf, Chris Schmidt and Robert Sausaman as Tigers that have earned the distinguished honor. In addition to Duncan’s accomplishment, Memphis also placed 17 players on the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll for the 2009-10 school year.

Award Winne rs Tiger senior defender Rick Alleman wrapped up his four-year career with the Tigers earning an All-CUSA second team nod after his performance as a central defender and team captain for Memphis during the 2009 season. Freshmen J.J. Greer, a local product from Cordova, Tenn., and Andreas Guentner, a transplant from Regensburg, Germany, also garnered honors from Conference USA. Greer, a forward for the Tigers, was selected to the All-Freshman team after netting one goal and dishing out five assists. Guentner, a versatile player that appeared in a variety of roles in the Tiger defense and in the midfield as a freshman, earned placement on the All-C-USA third team and on the All-Freshman team. The footballer known as “Kaiser” had two goals and one assist in his first year for the Blue and Gray.

Tigers P l ay In Front of R e c ord C rowd The University of Memphis men’s soccer team packed the stands at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Wednesday night with a schoolrecord 1,584 fans as they put on the first annual “Kicks for a Cause” event featuring the main match between the Memphis men’s soccer program and the Colaiste Ide prep program from Ireland. The Tigers and Colaiste Ide ended the match in a 0-0 tie in a very highly contested match on the night. The event was $2 to get into the gate with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts in Haiti. At the end of the night the Tigers raised a total of $2,918. “Everyone was really nice and very generous tonight,” said John C. Thatcher, Regional Major Gifts Officer for the American Red Cross. “We appreciate the support of Houston (High School), Memphis University School and the University of Memphis. On behalf of the Red Cross, thank you very much to everyone that contributed.” The night, which was to be focused on soccer at all levels, began with a match between Houston High School and Memphis University School at 5 p.m., on the main field at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and concluded with the main match between the Tigers and Colaiste Ide at 7 p.m. At half, four youth teams, all from the birth year of 1996, competed. Also at halftime, the back-to-back-to-back C-USA champion women’s soccer team were presented with their 2009 C-USA Championship rings. “It is fantastic to be able to raise as much money as we did tonight,” said Memphis head coach Richie Grant. “The supporters did not let us down tonight. I thought it was a great match. I am just very pleased to be able to contribute to the Red Cross and their efforts. I am just really pleased with the outcome of the night.” The record crowd of 1,584 fans surpassed Memphis’ previous high of 927 against Kentucky in 2007 by over 500 fans. 927 will continue to serve as the regular season high for the Tigers.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last seven years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Championship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 14 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed consecutive league championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Johnson is currently spearheading his second major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Department. Included in the $12.9 million project is a new addition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadium that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice facility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes. Johnson’s first capital campaign was

previously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign included a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex addition, a new basketball practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsorships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which includes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring.

For the spring 2010 semester, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 student-athletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their degrees, marking the largest group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record. Before taking over Tiger Athletics, Johnson was responsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons after serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.

UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

28

For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologicallysavvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universities; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recognized and respected throughout the academic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most historic and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto yearbook was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became pres-

ident - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by another name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Memphis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five stateapproved Centers of Excellence.

located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. Memphis is also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis In-

ternational Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day.

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and downto-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekendlong event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum

TIGER TRADITIONS When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tiger nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For over 35 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tiger Football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climate-controlled trailer, always with police escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its Tiger Tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tiger fans young & old through the preservation of one of the world’s most recognizable endangered species.

Stand Firm, O Alma Mater Through All The Years To Come; In Days Of Youth And Beauty Thy Halls Have Been Our Home. In Time Of Preparation Great Lessons Didst Thou Teach Till Now O Alma Mater, The Stars We’ll Strive To Reach. Lead On, O Alma Mater They Sons To Highways, Give Light And Truth Unto Them For All Their Coming Days. To Thee We’ll Give All Honor, Our Hopes Abide In Thee, For Thou, O Alma Mater, Hast Made Us Ever Free.

The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred Football Boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on November 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane, and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Alabama. TOM II would serve with pride for 17 years through 2008, passing away on October 15th of that year.

U OF M FIGHT SONG Go Tigers Go, Go On To Victory, Be A Winner Thru And Thru; Fight Tigers, Fight Cause We’re Going All The Way -Fight, Fight For The Blue And Gray And Say -Let’s Go Tigers Go, Go On To Victory. See Our Colors Bright And True; It’s Fight Now Without A Fear, Fight Now Let’s Shout A Cheer, Shout For Dear Memphis U. (Yell) Go Tigers Go Go Tigers Go Yea -- Tiger Go!

Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born August 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on November 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on November 22 during a football game against the UCF.

THE LOGO The University of Memphis’ official logo was redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping Tiger coming out from behind the letter. The new logo is an “M” with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the “M.”

SCHOOL COLORS The University of Memphis’ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.
