Every summer on the weekend after Memorial Day, which this year lands on May 30th and 31st, folks from all over California and beyond gather at the Benbow Lake State Recreation Area in southern Humboldt County, to celebrate the North Coast’s premier summer festival of arts, culture and community! Produced by Mateel Community Center, this cherished, southern Humboldt tradition, brings people together to share in the fun, color, beauty and warmth of the return of summer here. This year our beloved Summer Arts & Music Festival was honored by Fest 300 magazine, an industry publication that reviews festivals worldwide, as one of the “15 Transformational Festivals to Attend in 2015”! Thanks to the many volunteers and sponsors who help make that possible! Throughout the weekend, festival attendees will enjoy over 100 diverse musical performances from local to internationally known acts including, JJ Grey & Mofro; Blackalicious; The Brothers Comotose; Cadelaria; Motherlode; and Todo Mundo, to name a few. From our local musical talent, we’ll be hearing from such well-loved performers as Chris & Peter; Joanne Rand; Humboldt Capolera: SoHum Girls Band; and Lost Coast Marimbas. Not-to-be-missed performances and attractions include Feet First, from the tiny dancing flowers, to fairies and ballerinas, to the accomplished mature dancers, they are a definite crowd favorite of the daytime schedule. Other colorful and skilled dance troupes to see include gypsy dancers, Middle Eastern and Egyptian inspired belly dancers, fire dancers and even sword dancers. At the south end of the fairway you’ll find the popular Generation Green exhibition, the Solar Stage, and a new fine arts area. Summertronica is back with a large tent dedicated exclusively to Electronic Music from our community featuring top DJs of Northern California. New this year, in the turn-around also at the south end, will be the Sacred Round, a giant circular calendar that marks the days with hand-painted rocks created by local Nicole Devine, as a place to honor and celebrate the Earth and seasons. Children may paint a rock to place on a day special to them, and local teacher/author, Gillian Brown will conduct a ceremony at noon and tell a story to kids at 1pm both days.

Ride The Shuttle The Summer Arts shuttle is the best way to access the festival. Offering service all day until shortly after close of the festival each evening. It will drop off/ pick up at the following locations. Northern Route: Starts at 9 am) • REDWAY: Majestic Center (on Redwood Dr. in Redway) • GARBERVILLE: Garberville Chevron (corner of Redwood Dr. and Sprowel Creek Rd in Garberville) Southern Route: (Starts at 8:30 am) • Richardson Grove State Park • Richardson Grove Family Camp & RV Park

Otherwise, parking is very limited in the town of Benbow and attendees are encouraged to ride the shuttle to the event. There is limited free parking in the vicinity of most shuttle stops.

Camping Information There is NO CAMPING available on the festival site. Several state park and private campgrounds are located in the vicinity. Those that are walking-distance or on the shuttle route include Benbow Valley RV & Campground, Richardson Grove State Park, and Richardson Grove Family Camp & RV Park. The Mateel Information & Merchandise Booth Open 9:30am to 10pm both days

The Kid Zone is always a hit with Circus Nature and their 3 Rings of Play; an arts & crafts, a bouncy house, a one-of-a-kind museum of curiosities called the Odditorium, the antics of Mickey the Clown, facepainting and more. And heads up! A gaggle of performers including jugglers, clowns, unicyclists and face-painted kids may be spotted parading down the fairway at any time! The huge selection of unique treasures that artists and craftspeople offer make Summer Arts a prime spot for birthday and holiday gift-buying. Grab a cold beverage and stroll the fairway, and when you want to rest and recharge, stop at any of the fantastic food booths offering a tantalising array of choices. Local fire departments, schools, health organizations, environmental groups, radio stations, and other non-profits, so important to our way of life here, are participating and fundraising throughout the festival grounds. Know that your patronage of their booths, not only supports these organizations and artists, but makes it possible for the Mateel to continue offering a variety of arts and humanitarian programs, events, and services year after year. On behalf of the Mateel Community Center, thanks so much for sharing in the special magic that is the Summer Arts & Music Festival!

HEADLINERS / trees stage 8:40 JJ Grey & Mofro JJ Grey is an unfettered, blissful performer, who sings with a blue collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. From Jacksonville, FL, his presence before an audience is something startling and immediate; at times a funk rave, and at other times a sort of mass absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. A fearless performer, his career includes nine albums, spanning from his debut album Black water (2011) to his current Ol’ Glory (2015), and has offered grace and groove in e q ual measure on every one. His range as a songwriter, from the sacred to the profane, the sly to the sublime, underlies his live delivery that is relentlessly honest as much as it is compassionate. For devoted listeners, there is something fitting, even affirmative in Grey’s commitment to his grandparents’ farmland where he lives and records. The farms and eddying swamps of his youth are as much a part of Grey’s music as the Louisiana swamp blues tradition. As a boy, Grey was drawn to country rockers, including Jerry Reed, Otis Redding and even Run D.M.C. Merging these traditions, Grey began touring as Mofro in the late ‘90s, soon expanding his tours beyond America and the U.K., playing ever larger clubs and eventually massive festivals. A hip shooting, off the cuff performer, JJ Grey & Mofro have one foot in the country church and the other rocking Memphis soul. This will undoubtedly be one fierce and intimate live experience to close out Saturday’s Summer Arts offerings.

7:05 • Motherlode featuring Fred Wesley A dynamite pairing, the Arcata-based 10-piece funk train, Motherlode, will feature legendary American jazz and funk trombonist, Fred Wesley, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s. Heavily influenced by James Brown, Herbie Hancock, and the more contemporary Galactic, Motherlode’s extravaganza of fun is their cast. Wesley was not brought full circle by the addition of Wesley to only a pivotal member of James Brown’s band The JBs, whose slippery riffs and pungent, precise solos gave the funk tunes their instrumental punch, but he also acted as band leader and musical director of the J.B.’s and later spent several years playing with George Clinton’s various Parliament/ Funkadelic projects. In his 40-year career he has played and arranged with artists such as Ray Charles, Van Morrison, and De La Soul to name just a few, and is now revered and sampled by many artists of the next generation. Motherlode is among these next generation artists and their complex arrangements and gritty 70s inspired sound will provide the perfect backdrop for Wesley’s mean trombone. Together, they are on a West Coast tour to promote Motherlode’s latest album, All in Good Time, which is what this act is guaranteed to give you!

Sunday schedule

n

`

In a hip-hop career that has stretched well over a decade, Blackalicious has earned respect the old-fashioned way, rising through artistry, honesty, and commitment. An American hip-hop duo from Sacramento, CA made up of rapper, Gift of Gab, and DJ/producer, Chief Xcel; they are noted for Gift of Gab’s tongue-twisting, multi-syllabic, complex rhymes and Chief Xcel’s classic beats. Like a few other West Coast rap acts, including the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blackalicious has generally favored what hip-hoppers call the “positive tip;” their lyrics are often spiritual and uplifting rather than violent and misogynistic. Formed in the early ’90s, their debut single “Swan Lake” (1994) was an underground hit and in 2000 they released their fulllength debut, Nia (the Swahili word for “purpose”). Post 2002, Xcel and Gab began developing solo material, but the pair reunited in 2005 for their third album, The Craft, and 2015’s Imani. And currently, the digital reissue of their 1993 EP, Melodica (originally released on cassette), is causing a buzz at a time when audiences are relishing throwbacks. Treating every rhyme as a piece of poetry, playing with the aesthetics of language, and representing the voice as a unique instrument in and of itself, on Sunday night these lords of the West Coast underground will throw down for this old-school close out to Summer Arts 2015.

7:00 • Angelo Moore & Brand New Step

Angelo Moore is a singer and performer who hardly needs an introduction. Through his legendary band, Fishbone, Moore has influenced and defined a musical style and performance ability that crosses generations and genres. Having joined forces with Bay Area artist/musician Kris Jensen and East Bay Producer/musician Jim Greer of the producer duo, The Rondo Brothers, Moore is redefining himself and his sound with The Brand 10:00 Bud Rogers New Step project. As The Rondo Broth11:00 Humboldt Capoiera ers craft the beats, 12:15 Bret Harte Breakers Moore decorates with vocals, horns 1:40 Sign1Nine and thermin. 10:00 • Lalona Lalona is an eclectic vocal trio from Humboldt Bay performing arrangements spanning a variety of cultural traditions and eras. In the presence of these voices, you will find yourself drifting in Elysian Fields of harmony.

11:00 • Joanne Rand w/ Tim Randles Touring nationally for 30 years and preparing to release her 15th CD, the fierce and yet ever graceful Rand was voted “Best Acoustic Band” by the North Bay Bohemian reader’s poll. Her counterpart for this event, Tim Randles, is a lifelong pianist influenced by jazzfusion, world beat, and theatre music and is currently the part-time musical director for Dell’Arte.

12:00 • Feet First The Feet First Dancers is a little gem of Southern Humboldt that was founded over 35 years ago. A small group of people who were part of the back to the land movement of the 1970s and who shared a love of dance came together and magic happened. They created a dance company with a commitment to inclusiveness, collaboration, and originality. As time has passed the Feet First community has included the children of the founding members... there are now Feet First grandchildren performing with the company.

12:55 • Tweener ClownSnotBombs See Youth Stage description.

1:25 • Lost Coast Marimbas An arsenal of handmade marimbas and a tropical rhythm section come together to create the jazz-tinged, psychedelic sound of the Lost Coast Marimbas, a longtime local favorite sure to get you in the Summer Arts spirit. This performance is dedicated to the memory of longtime LCM member, Archie Umina. We love you.

2:10 • Tweener Arianna Guillette Arianna plays all original music and is currently studying to be a musician at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz.

2:35 • BROTHER The only independent band to have played the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, chances are you’ve seen BROTHER on NBC’s “ER” or heard their music on the classic “Baraka” soundtrack. Fusing signature vocals and guitar with the deep pulse of the didgeridoo, the soaring highs of the bagpipes, and tribal percussion, BROTHER has self-released 12 albums and is cited as a role model in the independent Australian music scene. With extensive world touring, the Celtic-tribal performances of this now CA-based trio are energetic celebrations that take the live show to a whole new level.

8 | Mateel Community Center

3:45 • Tweener Richard Barnick & Tina Garsen

Barnick is a self-taught guitar/ bass player and Garsen a player of woodwind. Together, their music ranges from alt-rock to strange chamber music, with a dose of blues thrown in whenever possible.

4:05 • Mojo Green Exploding from the shadows of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Reno’s Mojo Green has been staking their claim as one of the region’s premier horn-driven funk and soul dance bands. Originally formed in 2009, their drums and bass lay down the foundational grooves while the guitar adds some tasty licks and the saxophone and trumpet sound out blistering lead lines. Punctuated by soulful and sexy lead vocals, Mojo Green plays a style of high-energy music that makes you want to dance and grind until the very last note. Their debut album, Funk in Public (2013), has been well received by both fans and the media alike, earning an award for Best Album of Northern Nevada for 2013 by the Reno News and Review.

5:15 • Tweener Hugh P. Gallagher Hugh Gallagher is a Humboldt-based singer/ songwriter whose music spans the folk/country/ and rockabilly genres. Often delivered with a bounce, sometimes with just a moan or a tear, his songs are lyrical poems drawn from the spinning tragicomedy we all call life.

5:35 • Todo Mundo Voted Best World Music band at the 2014 San Diego Music Awards, Todo Mundo (“All the World”) blends the musical flavors of Spanish rumba, reggae, Brazilian, Balkan and Middle Eastern styles into an irresistible groove that has been moving dance floors and connecting worldwide audiences since 2009. This past February, Todo Mundo entered NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Contest and from the 7,000 artist submissions they received, NPR’s Alt.Latino program selected Todo Mundo (along with 10 other bands) to be featured in one of their podcasts. Led by singer/ guitarist/ songwriter, Santiago Orozco, a native of Colombia, Todo Mundo recently teamed up with Grammy Award-winning engineer Alan Sanderson to release their latest album, Conexion.

6:45 • Tweener Tom Lasbury Thomas Lasbury is a SoHum musician performing original songs along with some blues and jazz standards.

11:00 • Chris & Peter Folk duo, Chris & Peter, have been playing together for the past 40 years and have performed at nearly every Summer Arts since the festival’s inception. They play a mix of traditional and original material on dobro and guitar, bringing you a taste of the old-time festival magic.

1:10 • Woven Roots The music of Woven Roots harmonizes rich roots reggae and dub styles from the deep wilderness of Humboldt. With lyrics based in their ecological values, Woven Roots has three albums: Storms of Change, Foundation, and Sound of the Earth- and are one of our top local bands

2:15 • Tweener Bud Rogers See Sunday Lawn Stage description.

2:35 • Candelaria Birthed from the cultural melting pot of Oakland, CA, Candelaria pulls apart cumbia and puts it back together with a heavy dose of dub, reggae, reggaeton, and electronica. Keeping true to their live performance ethic, they perform all electronic effects in real time with no computers or programmed beats, creating psychedelic world dance music that crowds find irresistible. Moving people with their infectiously original cumbia-dub style, Candelaria has quickly become one of the most popular bands in the Bay Area and was described by NPR in 2013 as the “emerging Latin band to watch.”

3:35 • Tweener Lemon Lemon Cherry Making beautiful music out of a pile of random instruments, this duo features the songs and singing of Chris Parreira (guitar) accompanied by multi-instrumentalist, Anwyn Halliday (glockenspiel, melodica, trumpet, keytar, etc). Melodic, experimental folk, with elements of blues and trad jazz.

3:55 • Joe Driscoll & Seykou Kouyate The expression “music is a common language” has never been more appropriate as it is in the case of Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate. US-born, UK-based Driscoll speaks no French, while Kouyate, who hails from West Africa’s Guinea, little English. When they were brought together at the Nuit Metis festival in Marseille, France in 2010 and given a week to produce a concert, music was the only way they could communicate. It turns out they had a lot to “talk” about, and their first meeting sparked a collaboration that led to the formation of a band, the recording of an album (Faya), heavy touring in Europe and rave reviews around the globe. Driscoll contributes rapping, beatboxing, and guitar while Kouyate, a phenomenon in African music circles, stirs it up with electrified riffs on the kora. Together, Driscoll and Kouyate blend hip-hop, spoken word, funk, and soulful, accessible rock with Afrobeat, reggae and irrepressible African grooves.

5:05 • Tweener Mark Goo See Saturday Lawn Stage description.

5:25 • The Brothers Comatose Banging away on stringed instruments. Singing. Beer. Camping. Hiking. Drinking coffee. Listening to records. Road trips. Like the list indicates, this may be one easygoing Bay-Area band, but they play some mean bluegrass/ folk music that has landed them on major festival stages. The Brothers Comatose grew up in a house that was known for its music parties: everyone would bring an instrument, call out tunes and play for hours. The Brothers then took this generous, inclusive, and rowdy attitude to stages all over San Francisco and the buzz now has them touring nationally as well. Their first album, Songs From The Stoop (2010) received five star reviews and the excitement continues about their latest album, Respect the Van (2012). With the addition of members Philip Brezina (fiddle) and Ryan Avellone (mandolin), this string quintet brings a sing-along, stomp-along atmosphere everywhere they go, making for one big extended Morrison family house party.

Mateel Programs Benefit the Entire Community Mateel Community Center has the distinction of being both a community center and an arts non-profit organization.

As a community center, Mateel is a place where the people come together. We come together at the hall to dance and listen to live music, to perform, to fundraise for non-profits and people in need, to convene for all sorts of meetings, workshops, memorials, parties, wedding receptions, classes and even to share a meal three times a week. As an arts non-profit the Mateel offers arts education and exposure through classes in theatre, music, fine arts, martial arts, and arts exposure through concerts, dance recitals, plays, art exhibits, and our music and art festivals including the Summer Arts & Music Festival, Reggae on the River, Humboldt Hills Hoedown and Hemp Fest. We also rent the hall to outside producers who bring other music concerts to the Mateel. We are a membership organization, whose members have a vote in the elections for board of directors. We welcome members’ suggestions for the kinds of programs and entertainment they would like to see at their community center. As the reality of funding cuts threaten drama, arts and music classes in our public schools, the Mateel is happy to be able to offer some quality programs to children, youth, and the community at large.

Recycled Youth Now in it’s 18th year, the Recycled Youth program is a teenage Theatre Ensemble and one of our programs for kids that is near and dear to the Mateel. Under the direction of its founder, local theatre professional, Joani Rose, the teen participants use comedy, physical theatre and music to explore and express their questions and views of the world and their lives. The result is a series of vibrant skits that are highly entertaining, comedic at times, moving and thought-provoking. Some of the issues Recycled Youth has explored are the effects of GMOs on our health, the effects of growing up around the marijuana industry, climate change, the influx of transients in our area, duplicitous politicians, sexuality, relationships, family dynamics….issues that effect us all as seen through the focused awe of young people in the midst of finding their way in life. The Recycled Youth program convenes in October with performances in early December.

Food Preservation Classes The Food Preparation classes are part of a program that started last year in collaboration with the CalFresh program and the Humboldt County UC Cooperative Extension’s Master Preservers is a series of food preservation classes that meet monthly at the Mateel kitchen. Master preservers are teaching classes in canning, freezing and drying throughout the year with whatever the season’s harvest brings. With the drought conditions in CA expected to effect food supplies/costs this year, Californians are interested in preserving foods while they are in season and plentiful. Classes fill up fast starting in May. Exact dates will be announced soon. For more information or to sign up for any of the classes, contact Amie McClellan at 707-2233063 or at the Mateel office at 707-923-3368.

Missoula Children’s Theatre Presents Blackbeard The Pirate in 23rd Year at Mateel For 23 years, every 2nd week of October, the big red truck of the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s pulls up into the Mateel Community Center’s parking lot and that’s when the fun begins! This year, that means auditions on Monday, October 5th and a public performance of Blackbeard The Pirate on Saturday, October 10th. A highlight of Fall for many kids in Southern Humboldt, is when for one full week this professional, touring, children’s theatre program takes residence at the Mateel. In addition to their amazing experience and expertise, two of MCT’s Actor/Directors bring scenery, costumes, props, make-up, and basic lighting - everything it takes to put on a full-scale, musical theatre production, except the cast. That’s provided by southern Humboldt kids who with MCT’s direction, become stars for the week! Fifty to 60 local students, from Kindergarten through 12th grade are cast at an open audition on Monday. Throughout the week they are well-rehearsed, learning lines, songs and choreography to perform as an ensemble in a full-length musical. All of the plays are original adaptations of classic children’s stories and fairytales that we all know and love. Over the years the kids have performed Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, The Secret Garden, Pinnocchio and many more.

The Spring Arts Collective Program for Youth The Spring Arts Collective, (SPARC) is an 8-week, after-school arts and music program for youth, ages 11 to 17, that just completed its 4th annual session this past April. SPARC was created in 2012 by former Mateel Board member Kathryn Guillette to give kids with an interest in arts and music an opportunity to explore their interests and also to help augment the lack of music and art classes that have been cut from school budgets. The classes were taught by Southern Humboldt artists. Working as a team, commercial artist Marc Arceneaux taught graphic design and Ann McIllwain, the art instructor from Whale Gulch School taught basic drawing techniques. Cathryn Guillette, Jessi Langstrom taught recorders and Marimbas and Richard Barnick taught bass guitar. The classes culminate in an exhibit of the students’ art and a performance of their music as part of the Artists of the Emerald Coast, an art show and wine-tasting that happens in late April of each year. SPARC provides a focused, positive, creative outlet for youth in our area in a safe and fun atmosphere. Look for registration announcements in local media outlets in each February, for the classes that start the first week of March.

Mateel Aikido One of the most popular and longestrunning Mateel-sponsored programs of the Community Center is Mateel Aikido. Led by Sensei Russell Wisby, Mateel Aikido provides low cost training for children and adults in the Japanese martial art of Aikido. It’s offered two days a week for most of the year and new students are welcome at any time. Classes are held most Mondays and Wednesdays from 4pm to 6pm at the Mateel Community Center. For more information or to sign up, contact Russell Wisby at 986-7054.

Random People Theatre Project The Random People Theatre Project is an experiential theatre program started by southern Humboldt residents, Jenny Edwards and Susan Alexander for people of all ages and levels of experience. After their retirement from the project four years ago, theater pros, Marilyn Foote and Anna Rogers, took over the co-directing of the project. The production consists of an eclectic mix monologues and short plays that range from comedy to drama, all with a common setting. Last year all of the plays were set at a general hospital. This year, the plays were set in a rural park. Foote said that RPTP gives people with an interest in writing, directing or acting in theatre, a place to learn, practice their skills and perform their art. Part of the appeal, Rogers said, is that “chances are that if you live in Southern Humboldt, you know someone who is involved in the annual RPTP show and it’s always entertaining to see your neighbors performing as their alter ego or a character created entirely out of their imaginations,” Started as a variety of monologues, RPTP has expanded to include small plays with more than one voice. At the end of several months of developing and rehearsing, their theatrical vignettes are performed before live audiences at the Mateel for 3 nights and a matinee. This popular Mateel-sponsored program is going into its eleventh year.

As part of the Mateel’s continuing mission to offer quality cultural opportunities for children and teens, we offer the Missoula Children’s Theatre at no cost to participants. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Mateel office at $15 for general admission, $12 for MCC members and $5 for pre-teens. For more information call phone 923-3368 or check out our website at www.mateel.org. 2015 Summer Arts & Music Festival | 25

San Francisco Mime Troupe Presents Freedom Land at MCC, June 27 The Tony award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe, is a popular staple of Mateel’s annual offerings. Bringing political satire to audiences as hilarious musical theatre, is a form the Mime Troupe has perfected over its 56-year history. The Mime Troupe makes you laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life while highlighting the causes of their existence. Never reticent about bringing tough issues to light, they do the opposite: dissecting and exposing the dark underbelly of unscrupulous corporations, and governments that hold their rights to profit and power, above the rights of people to things like clean water, clean air and other basic freedoms. In recent years they’ve lampooned such controversial issues as genetically modified foods, the “War on Terror,” the U.S. health care system, the gentrification of urban neighborhoods and presidential elections, to name a few. This year’s show, “Freedomland” set in a poor urban neighborhood of big city America, looks at how the poor in general, particularly people of color and immigrants become the collateral damage of the war on drugs, especially now, as the Mayor and the Police Chief ramp up the fear, the funding and their shiny new tank to fight the newest drug threat to America, SNORF! The San Francisco Mime Troupe’s shows are a favorite of political theatre enthusiasts in Humboldt County and generally sell out. For the first time this year, SFMT will be performing in June instead of August.
