The 2010-11 athletic year had its share of highs and lows for Lynn University. Five out of its 11 intercollegiate programs reached the NCAA Tournament, two squads finished as national runners-up and the Fighting Knights continued to churn out quality student-athletes to the tune of 19 All-Americans and three Academic All-Americans. Lynn once again added to its Sunshine State Conference hardware with its 27th title, 35 AllSSC selections, two Players of the Year and one Coach of the Year. In addition, the Blue & White played host to its first SSC Men’s & Women’s Golf Championship held at the Boca Country Club where LU took third and fourth, respectively. Tragedy also struck as the Lynn family said goodbye to men’s soccer star Kyle Conrad, who sadly passed away following an accident on December 11, 2010. Just this past year, Conrad became the first student-athlete, for any sport at Lynn, to achieve First Team Academic AllDistrict honors three consecutive years. Within the illustrious history of the men’s soccer program, he joined the elite ranks by becoming one of just four players with 100 career points. Lynn University’s 2010-11 Annual Report will give an in-depth look of all the success and recognition the Fighting Knights received. Here is a quick look into LU’s triumphs this year:  Launched new athletic website, www.LynnFightingKnights.com  The Athletic Department won its third consecutive SSC Donation Competition  Lynn received its fourth consecutive DII ADA Academic Achievement Award  Hosted SSC Men’s & Women’s Golf Championship and became first institution to provide live scoring for the entire tournament  The Fighting Knights men’s golf team named NCAA DII Academic National Champions  Lynn had two players drafted by professional organizations; Scott Gordon was selected by FC Dallas in the third round of the MLS Superdraft while Andrew Virgili was a 12th round pick of the Chicago White Sox in the MLB Draft  New covered and lighted batting cages constructed for baseball and softball  Both Men’s Golf and Women’s Tennis finished as National Runners-Up  Men’s Tennis captured its fourth SSC crown and Lynn’s 27th conference title  Volleyball reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year  Men’s Tennis earned the most All-America selections in program history with six  Men’s Golfer Ricardo Gouveia was named the National Freshman of the Year 13

Along with the success of the Fighting Knights’ teams, Lynn’s athletic department made significant headway in accomplishing its Strategic Plan. Among the goals reached are: 

Implemented the department's updated mission, core values & vision Implemented coaches corner and administrator liaisons to the SAAC and included representatives of each in SAAC meetings

The ever-expanding brood of the Lynn University Athletics Hall of Fame got a little bigger following the induction of the 2011 Class. Five former Fighting Knights took their place among the 32 previous inductees at the Annual Athletics Banquet on April 27. Among those honored were women’s soccer stalwart Christina “Peppy” Albrecht, men’s soccer standout Jakob Lorentzon, women’s tennis teammates Mischa Peterova and Petra Stankova and men’s basketball star James Taylor.

Class of 2011 Peppy Albrecth Women’s Soccer 1989-92

Jakob Lorentzon Men’s Soccer 1991-94

Mischa Peterova Women’s Tennis 1993-96

Petra Stankova Women’s Tennis 1993-96

James Taylor Men’s Basketball 2001-05

The Class of 2011 becomes the 11th class to be inducted into the Lynn University Athletic Hall of Fame. Men's soccer leads the way with eight selections while women's soccer and women’s tennis follow with six members. Lynn administrators and baseball have garnered three selections with men’s and women’s basketball, men's and women's golf and men's tennis having two honorees and softball and volleyball holding one selection apiece. 18

A year after Lynn University made 15 enhancements, the Fighting Knights looked to upgrade more. So 2010-11 saw the Blue & White undertake three significant improvements with an eye towards a fourth: 1. First and foremost, Lynn completed construction on the Michael Kain batting cages for both baseball and softball. Sindee Kerker, associate professor of criminal justice in the College of Liberal Education, generously gifted Lynn with funding to construct the new lighted, covered batting cages in honor of her late brother, Michael Kain. 2. Another addition for Lynn’s baseball program are the outfield windscreens. These new windscreens were created by XXX and allows Lynn University sponsorship opportunities along with being able to promote baseball players from its past. 3. Following a quote being approved in 2009-10, new lockers and flooring were installed in the southwest corner of the gym. Both volleyball and women’s soccer were the beneficiaries of this summer project. 4. Although not completed in 2010-11, Lynn has gotten approval to install new lockers and flooring in the southeast locker room.

Lynn University’s student-athletes had many opportunities to find success off the courts and fields this past academic year and as usual took full advantage of making the most of their resources. As the Fighting Knights’ Life Skills Program continued to develop in its fifth year, student-athletes had the resources to take courses in personal development, career development, leadership and community awareness. In these workshop-based classes, students learned how to be successful during their careers at Lynn University, in the community and in pursuing a career outside of athletics. Upperclassmen also had the opportunity of becoming Student-Athlete Mentors for the fourth consecutive year through the Life Skills programming and co-teach workshops for the student-athletes in the one-credit courses. During the 2010-11 academic year, seniors Rebecca Mangone (women’s golf) and Michael Woo (men’s basketball) and juniors Kara Bailey (volleyball) and Marquis Lee (women’s basketball) served as mentors, teaching sections of the Personal Development course in time management, conflict management, leadership and commitment. The volleyball team won its second straight Knights Cup and $1,000 to use towards any program enhancements. Student-athletes competed on behalf of their teams and earned points in the following categories that align with the Life Skills Program: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development, and Community Service. The Knights Cup competition encourages the achievement of academic excellence, promotes personalized choices for supplementing the student-athlete's educational background, provides opportunities for personal development, involves the student-athlete as a role-model/leader, and supports the team concept and encourages student-athletes to support fellow student-athletes. Serving the South Florida area in many different capacities, Lynn’s student-athletes participated in 1,443 hours of community service. They strengthened relationships with Stratford Court Retirement Home, Community Blood Center of South Florida and the American Cancer Society, while continuing to help other established organizations. (See chart) The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee continued to join forces with the Any Solder Inc. campaign to collect and send items to United States Military personnel deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan for the third straight year. US Army, Marine, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force members post “wish lists” on the AnySoldier.com website and SAAC chose Florida-based troops once a month to send items to. In total, student-athletes sent 4,016 items to seven different troops at war. SAAC’s three-year total of items shipped has now been raised to 12,230. For the student-athletes efforts, LU was awarded the Collection Donation Award sponsored by the Sunshine State Conference for the third consecutive year. Lynn completed granting its third “wish” in as four years through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida. The Fighting Knights conducted a variety of fundraisers to raise $5,000; the amount needed to grant the wish of a Parkland, FL 12-year old boy who’s wish was to meet the Washington Redskins. His wish was officially granted in November when he and his family traveled to Washington, DC Building upon a relationship that started by hosted a single BINGO Night four years ago, SAAC continued to visit Stratford Court Retirement Home on numerous occasions. The Fighting Knights hosted BINGO at least twice a month and organized the 3rd Annual “Winter Wonderland Senior Prom” for the residents. The “Senior Prom” served as the marquee event as over 250 senior citizens attended the themed event in December. On campus, SAAC continued to help the student-athletes because more involved with the athletics administration. At the committee’s monthly meetings, the group selected head coaches and administrators to join them as part of the agenda’s “Coaches and Administrators Corner.” The group’s leaders took all their concerns and suggestions to an end-of-the-year meeting with Lynn University’s President, Kevin Ross in hopes of making positive changes on campus. Head coaches Niki Washington (women’s basketball), Courtney Bibby (women’s golf), Chip Dutchik (women’s soccer), John Rootes (men’s soccer), and Chris Greenwood (men’s golf) all met with SAAC during the 2010-11 academic year, as well as administrators Jeff Schaly (Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance), Jon Roos (Athletics Marketing Coordinator), Kristen Moraz (Athletic Director), and Michael Duck (Head Athletic Trainer), and Dr. Ralph Norcio (Faculty Athletic Representative). 20
