Brief: A rebranding of JK Rowling’s world winning, and fast becoming litrature classic, Harry Potter. The aim of the brief is to make the re-brand as tactile as possible and to move it away from the high gloss “Hollywood” feel that has over arched the series since the realse of the acompanying movies.

Audience

Childhood fans of Harry Potter who have followed the series from the start and know the characters from back to front.

Concept:

To focus on the characters of Harry Potter, how they fit into the grand sheme of the story and their imporatnce in it.

Background: Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of the adolescent wizard Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story arc concerns Harry’s quest to overcome the evil dark wizard Lord Voldemort, whose aim is to conquer the wizarding world and subjugate non-magical people, and who seeks to destroy all those who stand in his way, such as Harry’s parents.

A series of many genres, including fantasy and coming of age (with elements of mystery, thriller, and romance), it has many cultural meanings and references. According to Rowling, the main theme is death, although it is primarily considered to be a work of children’s literature.

Book Cover Layout:

The use of white space was to draw eyes towards the illustrations and to not take away from their purpose of drawing in a reader. It also leaves the mystery of the book open to those who have not read the books and therefore their mind is instantly open to interpretation.

Covers:

Printed on off-white and textured paper, the covers closely represent parchment (commonly used in the series as writing paper). The book box is wrapped in the same paper stock to give the feeling on unity. These kinds of book covers and the presenation box are not made for every day wear and tear. They are collectable commodities and so are not laminated in the same way the previous books are.

Spot Varnish: Each cover is spot vanished with Harry Potters lightning bolt/ruin scar. They are only visible in the light which reflects one of the main themes of light magic verses dark magic.

Playing Cards: The playing card set is based upon the 56 tarot card deck (minor arcana) rather than the traditional 52 poker card set. Tarot cards are used in the series as a divination tool by Professor Trelawney so she may try to predict future events.

Exploding Snap: The snap cards are based on the wizard game ‘exploding snap’ in which the cards spontaneously explode during games.
