Complaints increasing about area traffic

By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County has been attracting more residential, commercial and industrial development in recent years — leading to new opportunities and population growth. But the growth creates traffic and there’s growing pushback against the county’s clogged traffic arteries. Carla Card appeared, via a remote feed,

during the public comment portion of the Pasco County Commission’s Dec. 7 meeting. “I’m here today to discuss the tremendous growth, which is leading to the terrible traffic issues and accidents, near State Road 54, State Road 56, the Grove (at Wesley Chapel),Tampa Premium Outlets, and Old Pasco Road to Bruce B. Downs (Boulevard),” Card said. “My home is off of Wesley Chapel Boulevard, and this concerns County

(Commission) Districts 1, 2 and 3. “Fender-benders and horrible accidents are happening in this area every day because of the overgrowth in population. “Our community can’t handle any more. “Not only is the gridlock and the buildup negatively affecting the quality of life with current residents, but it’s also negatively affecting the wildlife that has nowhere to go See TRAFFIC, page 9A

Pasco County Sheriff says jail Pasco County Schools expansion will fall short of need continue to add more school choices

Even before it opens, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco says the planned expansion of the county’s detention center in Land O’ Lakes will fall short of the county’s needs. The sheriff and County Administrator Dan Biles addressed the issue during the county board’s Dec. 7 meeting. “One of the reasons that people are happy to move to Pasco County is because it’s safe,” Nocco said. However, he said, the capacity of the county’s detention center can’t accommodate the county’s needs and the expansion won’t resolve that, either. Pasco County voters approved a bond issue in 2018 for a 1,000-bed jail expansion. A PowerPoint prepared by the Sheriff’s Office, which was included in the county’s board’s agenda packet, says the bond will fall $19 million to $25 million short and will provide just 540 beds, if the shortfall is addressed.

The Sheriff’s Office manages the jail for the county, which falls under the county board’s jurisdiction. Currently, a temporary structure helps address the bed shortage at the jail. The PowerPoint notes: “With only 540 additional beds and with the temporary structure outliving its expected use by several years, the county jail expansion will be outdated and over capacity before it is even open.” Nocco said the county’s current situation has its roots in past failures to address the county’s jail needs. “These are things that happened way before any of us. These are things that have been going on for years and because they weren’t dealt with then, we’re now in the predicament we’re in,” Nocco said. He cited a study done in 2015 projected that the county’s detention center would need 2,535 beds in 2024. It currently has 1,432 beds. Another problem the county is encounSee JAIL, page 9A

The Pasco County School Board recently approved the conversion of two existing elementary schools into Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics magnet schools. The board voted on Dec. 14 to shift the boundaries for Centennial Elementary School, in Dade City and for Marlowe Elementary School in New Port Richey into the boundaries of nearby schools. The conversion to the new approach to learning will take place beginning in the fall of the 2022-2023 school year. Centennial Elementary will provide a convenient option for students and families in East Pasco, to explore the same educational opportunities as those offered at Sanders Elementary STEAM Magnet School, See CHOICES, page 9A

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The 39th “Spotlight on Talent Competition” will be held — the only question is how organizers will stage the contest. The talent competition— presented by the Heritage Arts Center — has long been a showcase for aspiring singers, dancers and other performers to demonstrate their abilities. At the same time, they are competing against others and entertaining audiences. Organizers realize that because of the pandemic, many may be wondering if the talent contest will happen this year. “We want talented students and families to know that producers are committed to see that happen,” Barbara Friedman, publicity chair and producer for Heritage Arts, said in a news release. Participants from kindergarten through 12th grade vie for over $4,000 in trophies, ribbons and cash prizes, according to the Heritage Arts news release. All types and styles of performing talents are accepted, both as solos and in groups.

Panels of paid, professional judges select finalists/winners in several age categories and also choose the winner of the $1,000 scholarship that goes to a senior high school student in Pasco County. In addition to a chance for prizes, performers have the opportunity to show off their abilities and to experience the sense of satisfaction that comes from performing well under the pressure of a competition. A decision will be made on Jan. 1 on whether the events will be held, as usual, before audiences on Feb. 19 and March 12, or if a Plan B COVID event will take place during a single day of competition on March 12, with safety protocols in place and no audience. Deadline for entering is Thurs., Feb. 3, 2022. Applications available online at heritagearts.org. Those with questions can contact Friedman at spotlight@heritagearts.org, or call 352-567-1720, and more information at heritagearts.org . Looking to Buy a Home in the New Year? Check out ICI Homes in Land O’ Lakes, Wesley Chapel & Dade City

S

oon we’ll be ringing in the new year and ICI Homes — one of Florida’s bestknown and prestigious homebuilders — will be celebrating 2022 by opening a limited number of premium homesites in Rose Pointe at Connerton. Connerton, Pasco County’s largest, master-planned, mixed-use community is located in Land O’ Lakes. Rose Pointe is a small gated community within Connerton, and offers a clubhouse with a full-time activities director, fitness center, gym, large resort-style pool and more. “Rose Pointe is already an established community with beautiful homes,” said Greg Jones, Tampa division manager for ICI Homes. “The community matches well with ICI Homes’ ability and our customers desire to customize their homes to match their personal interest.” Another gem in the Rose Pointe community is the Connerton Nature Preserve, which features a scenic 2mile trail that winds through natural wilderness, lakes and wetlands. The trail’s 10-foot-wide sidewalks allow for easy biking and walking through Connerton’s picturesque landscape.

The master suite features a luxurious bath and a large double entry walk-in closet, and the home is designed so that children and guests can enjoy their own separate spaces.

center includes a unique, T-shaped luxury pool with cabanas and a grilling area. Early next year, ICI will release information in regard to the commencement of Phase II.” “With the continued high demand for the Wesley Chapel area, we are excited to finish phase one of Persimmon Park and look forward to starting phase two as soon as possible,” said Jones. The Primrose is Persimmon Park’s most popular floor plan. This twostory plan features nearly 2,500 square feet of living space with a master bedroom suite on the main level, along with one guest bedroom and bathroom. The spacious living area is connected to a beautiful kitchen and dining area with plenty of room for family and friends to gather. The second story includes two additional bedrooms, a full bath, and a bonus room that is perfect for gaming, entertaining, family time or guest privacy.

PHASE TWO OF PERSIMMON PARK IS ON ITS WAY

ICI Homes also has three available homes remaining in Phase I of Persimmon Park, located in Wesley Chapel in the Wiregrass Ranch community. In this community, all of the homes have open floor plans with front porches, and garages and alleys at the back of the home. Its amenity

NEW HOMESITES ARE COMING TO LAKE JOVITA

ICI Homes is continuing to see a high level of interest in Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, so the prestigious homebuilder is still releasing homesites in the community, on a limited basis. “We are still seeing a lot of growth in Dade City. Families love the short, 20-minute drive to Wesley Chapel and the old-fashioned charm of downtown Dade City,” said Jones. One inventory home, with the Arden floor plan, will be ready in January of the new year. The Arden is a 2,402-square-foot, one-story home designed for entertaining and gracious family living. The foyer leads to a large living room centrally located for maximum convenience. A spacious gourmet kitchen and dining area are perfect for entertaining guests or spending quality time with the family. Views from the dining room look out on the covered lanai and large backyard.

Asturia, a 550-home master-planned community situated on 500 pristine acres in Odessa along the State Road 54 corridor, just five minutes from the Suncoast Parkway, is sold out of lots. ICI Homes is the exclusive builder in Asturia and has built plenty of inventory homes, including the one-story, 2,193-square-foot Juliette III, for families looking for open and spacious floor plans that include Florida-lifestyle features like summer kitchen patios, open balconies, and tons of windows. “Asturia is one of the most successful developments in Pasco County, which residents love for its smaller size and convenient location to major roadways,” said Jones. Asturia offers a kid-friendly, family oriented lifestyle surrounded by miles of multi-use trails, interspersed with dog parks and pocket parks. Its distinctive, 5,800-square-foot Amenity Center includes a fully equipped fitness center, covered outdoor living rooms, a luxurious resort-style swimming pool and expansive lawn areas for recreation. ICI Homes model homes are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., on Sunday. The Persimmon Park model is at 3793 Lajuana Blvd., Wesley Chapel; the Asturia model is at 2112 Secret Cove in Odessa; and the Lake Jovita Sales Center is at 12330 Lake Jovita Blvd., in Dade City. Mattamy Homes’ Highest Priority Is Its Homeowners

M

attamy Homes — the largest, privately owned homebuilder in North America — prides itself on giving exceptional customer service to its residents and offering them a meticulously-planned, quality community to live in. This industry-leading homebuilder recently was awarded Community of the Year (multi-family) and Community of the Year (single-family under 500 units) for Parkview at Long Lake Ranch, along with Best Floor Plan (2000-2999 sq. ft.) for the Elm at Parkview at Long Lake Ranch, at the 2021 Tampa Bay Builders Association Awards of Excellence held in November. “It’s a huge honor to receive that recognition from the industry and our peers,” says Kathleen Dec, Director of Marketing at Mattamy Homes. Residents of Parkview at Long Lake Ranch, like Maira Ortiz, couldn’t agree more with the recognition given to Mattamy Homes. “It feels very safe, family-oriented and comfortable living here,” says Ortiz, “It’s been a great experience so far.” Ortiz, her husband and their two kids have lived in the Seville model for a little over one year now. One of the selling features about Parkview for Ortiz was the proximity to everything in the local area. “You make a right and you’re in Wesley Chapel, you make a left and you’re in Tampa,” says Ortiz, “It’s a great central location.” Parkview at Long Lake Ranch is located along State Road 54, close to U.S. 41 and Sunlake Boulevard, in Lutz. The community offers single-family homes and townhomes that are available for sale, and six decorated model homes that are open daily for touring. Husband and wife duo Fernando Vidal Otero and Verónica Negrón Mieles also live in Parkview and purchased the Venice townhome back in late November 2020. The couple says they loved all the features that came with the home design. “There is a guest room on the first floor that is in front of a full bathroom, so you can have guests come over and they can have their own separate space,” says Negrón Mieles. “Plus, the back of the house has a view of the pond, so it’s very nice and relaxing.” The couple and Ortiz all give a glowing review to Mattamy Homes for its exceptional customer service through the building process. “Our agent was with us the whole process. That was one of the best

things to happen during the process,” says Otero, “And our builder was very communicative about the progress of the home. He was great.” “They [Mattamy Homes] are very accommodating and willing to help you every step of the way,” says Ortiz, “I just felt like they really cared.” Last month, Parkview opened a new amenity center, called Parkview Pavilion, that features a resort-style pool, shaded breezeway, cabanas and social gathering areas. Residents of this gated community also can enjoy another outdoor gathering area that includes hammocks, a comfortable seating area, cornhole and a dog park. “People of all ages are enjoying it,” says Dec, “It was really important for us to create gathering areas in the community that homeowners can use for a variety of activities, recreation or just relaxing. Dec really hopes these new amenities bring a new sense of community. “That’s exactly what they’re designed to do,” says Dec.

TOWNHOMES NOW OPEN IN WESLEY CHAPEL

Nearby in Wesley Chapel, Mattamy Homes has opened four new decorated model townhomes with contemporary exterior styling in its all-new l community of Volanti, located on Wesley Chapel Boulevard at Hay Road. Models are professionally decorated and open for tours daily, with private personalized appointments available. Four floor plans are available, ranging from 1,667 to 2,574 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and 2.5 to three baths. There are three exterior styles available at Volanti — Craftsman, French Country and

Contemporary. Base pricing begins in the low to mid $300s. “Volanti is the debut of our new Contemporary exterior style of townhomes, designed to offer a more modern, fresher look,” said Lisette Minnick, the homebuilder’s Tampa & Southwest Florida Division vice president of sales. Four distinct floor plans are available at Volanti — Marianna, Ormond, Sebring and Venice. All have one- or two-car attached garages and large lanais. The gated community will have 200 homes at build out, and fun-filled, family friendly amenities, including a resort-style swimming pool with an open-air pavilion, a barbecue area and a fire pit. Construction on the amenities began in October, and Mattamy Homes expects to have them completed by early summer. Making the community even more attractive is free lawn maintenance and no Community Development District (CDD) fees. Townhomes are released for sale regularly, but home offerings may be limited for a temporary time frame, due to the current high demand for homes, and labor and material constraints. Located just 4 miles from Interstate 75, Volanti boasts excellent access to the best of the Wesley Chapel area, including premier shopping and dining destinations.

CITRON GROVE COMING SOON

Mattamy Homes recently announced that it also is building 60 new townhomes in Citrus Park, on Gunn Highway, called Citron Grove. The Craftsman-style townhomes will have two floor plans available — the Marianna and Ormond. Pre-sales will

begin in February. Citron Grove is just 1.5 miles from the Veterans Expressway, 2 miles from Citrus Park Mall, and 12 miles from Tampa’s Westshore Business District and International Airport. The gated community, which was formerly Be Mac Nursery, will offer low-maintenance living, value-oriented price points and outstanding schools. Interested parties should register for updates on the website.

A Tax Refund Is A Great Way To Fund Home Improvements

Y

ou already may be thinking about how to best use your tax refund, which most people will be receiving in January and February. “Using your tax refund to be proactive and upgrade your home’s mechanical systems before there are problems, is a gift to your family’s long-term health and comfort,” said Miguel Silva of Cornerstone Pros Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical in Land O’ Lakes Silva explained that if your home was built in the past 12-20 years, it is likely overdue for a new A/C system, water heater and possible electrical panel. “With inflation rising and the cost of goods increasing at a rapid rate, a wise investment would be to take your tax return and invest the money back into your home’s mechanical systems prior to additional price increase and to avoid any future shortages,” said Silva. Tax refunds provide plenty more benefits for home upgrades with a future-oriented mindset. For example, a tax refund can cover the cost of converting to a tankless hot water heater or replacing your electrical panel. And it’s better to take care of it now before the summer months are upon us. “Most panels in older homes are wired for just 100 or 150 amps, which is not enough wattage for today’s myriad home electronics,” said Silva. “Most tax refunds will

It’s All About Community at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel

O

ne of the most important parts of building a town is supporting the community it is comprised of,” says Stephanie Lerret, senior

vice president of marketing and community relations for Avalon Park Group. Here are just some of the ways Avalon Park Wesley Chapel has supported its community this year:

Giving Back To The Troops To give back this holiday season, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel partnered with The Stano Foundation, a nonprofit in Wesley Chapel dedicated to supporting troops of all branches, both active duty and veterans. Avalon Park Wesley Chapel’s entire team recently helped to make 100 care packages for the troops. “We are always looking for ways to give back to our community, and we love every time we get to collaborate with The Stano Foundation,” says Marielle Fernandez, marketing and events coordinator at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel. “Avalon Park Wesley Chapel is not only an amazing community, but one that loves to give back to so

many. We are so grateful for their partnership, as we wouldn’t be able to do what we do without their support,” says Paula Stano, founder of The Stano Foundation. For more information on The Stano Foundation, visit Stano.org.

Partnership With The Pasco Fine Arts Council Avalon Park Wesley Chapel began its partnership with the Pasco Fine Arts Council and its East Pasco Fine Arts Gallery back in 2019. The residential community offered its Welcome Center as a new gallery on the east side of the county. The developer also committed to building a permanent arts center in its downtown, in coming years. “This partnership brings great opportunities to expand the arts to not only our community, but the entire east side of the county,” says Lerret. The vision the leaders at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel have for the arts in their masterplanned community meshes perfectly with that of the Pasco Fine Arts Council. “We want to have art classes

and workshops for our community, and a place to share artwork created by students and adults,” says Beat Kahli, president and CEO of Avalon Park Group. “As it turns out, the Fine Arts Council has been providing these types of programs for years, and all they needed was a place in East Pasco to bring their programs and exhibits to our residents in Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, San Antonio and Dade City.” For more information about the Pasco Fine Arts Council, visit PascoArts.org.

Championing The Local Arts Avalon Park Wesley Chapel is collaborating with The Wesley Chapel Theater Group, a new group that is banding together to create a local community theater for Wesley Chapel residents. “It is our pleasure to support local, grass-roots organizations that build up the arts, especially when it provides opportunities to meet and build relationships with neighbors,” says Beat Kahli, president and CEO of Avalon Park Group. One of those neighbors — and a resident of Avalon Park Wesley Chapel for the past five years— is

The Wesley Chapel Theater Group

Rodney Bueno, artistic director for The Wesley Chapel Theater Group. Bueno says he’s extremely grateful to Avalon Park Wesley Chapel for allowing his group to use the welcome center for its meeting and rehearsal space. “It’s definitely nice to bring something that I love to the community I live in. I hope to do that for a long time because I plan on living here for a long time,” says Bueno. For more information on The Wesley Chapel Theater Group, email wesleychapeltheatergroup@gmail.com.

LOOKING FOR STUDENTS IN NEED

Navarro Orthodontics in Land O’ Lakes is asking local schools to participate in its quest to commit $50,000 of orthodontic treatment to students in need. Teachers can help to identify students in need of orthodontic care, who may not otherwise be able to afford or have access to treatment. Once candidates are identified, the student must write an essay stating who they are, what their dreams are, how they will contribute to the community in the future, and why they need or want orthodontic treatment.Written consent from the parent of the student will be required, too. For information and questions, email dr.jn@navarroorthodontics.com, or call 813321-0084.

BRIDGING THE GAP

Most college-bound students qualify for financial aid to help pay for their education, such as federal and state grants, scholarships and federal loans. Some students may find that these programs do not cover all the costs of college, according to a Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) news release. Because interest rates on private loans depend on the borrower’s credit rating, students may have to pay higher rates than they would on federal student loans. In addition, many lenders require students to have a cosigner, and most require

STUDENT AID OPTIONS

Veterans and members of the U.S. armed forces and National Guard may be able to take advantage of numerous student aid programs to help pay for college or technical training, according to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA), in a news release. The federal government offers programs for the dependents of veterans and service members, too. These include: • GI Bill benefits, first passed for veterans of World War II.There are several versions, and more changes are coming as a result of the Forever GI Bill passed in 2017, the release says.Visit Benefits.va.gov/gibill/ for options and information. • Federal Tuition Assistance, for active duty members of all branches of the armed forces, including the Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves. For information, contact the college financial aid office or unit education officer.

Simple comfort goes a long way Saint Leo University presented nearly 250 teddy bears and stuffed animals to the Tampa Police Department (TPD), at the school’s Tampa Education Center. The bears were donated by students, faculty and staff, and the public. The TPD’s Behavioral Health, and the Major Crimes, Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence units will carry the bears in their vehicles as part of a ‘comfort squad’ to help children in stressful, crisis situations. Law enforcement members are shown loading the numerous bears and stuffed animals into a vehicle.

FEE ADJUSTMENT MEETING

The Pasco-Hernando State College’s District Board of Trustees (DBOT) will consider approving proposed adjusted course-related fees at its Jan. 18 board meeting. Fee adjustment proposals are reviewed and approved for DBOT consideration by

PHSC’s Council of Academic Affairs, a committee that includes representation by administrators, deans, academic department chairs, program directors, faculty and staff. Many fee adjustments relate to vendor increases for workforce courses, laboratories, and program testing. Some fees may be covered by financial aid, scholarships and grants. JAIL, from page 1A tering is the rising cost of materials to construct the jail expansion, Nocco said. “Nobody expected material to go up the way that it did. Every industry is dealing with it right now,” Nocco said. Biles said:“Since the end of ’18, the cost of materials for this project has gone up almost 45%. It’s accelerating. It’s not slowing down. “Every month we delay that, the prices are increasing anywhere from 4% to 5%. “It (the jail expansion) is significantly short (of) funding and we are working to bring it forward, with a funding solution to that,” Biles said, estimating the shortfall at between $20 million to $30 million.

“The current contract will be here in front of the board in the next few months, for the project price. We expect to start to construct this spring,” Biles said. Nocco also noted that construction funding is only part of the problem. The bond issue did not address staffing costs. He estimates that 250 additional employees will be needed to staff the jail expansion. “I just want to bring this to your attention because this is an issue that — since the early 2000s — hasn’t gone away,” Nocco told the county board. Pasco County Commission Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey told Nocco: “We’re glad you’re here today, but it’s frustrating news. “I’m sure we’ll be talking about it, later this year, about how to come up with the funding,” she said.

The 104-acre school site is about 3 miles due east of Interstate 75. A number of career and technical education labs are planned, including those designed for digital media, engineering robotics, biomedical and patient care. Automotive, diesel, welding, construction, electrical and cybersecurity programs are planned, as well. The diesel program will be one of just a few in Florida. The school district also is expected to open a new 6-12 STEAM magnet program in Land O’ Lakes, near Moffitt Cancer Center’s planned Pasco County campus. School district and Moffitt officials are already in discussion regarding the vast potential for unique learning opportunities for students who will be attending that school. The school, which is expected to open in the fall of 2023, is planned on an 18.8acre site within Angeline, south of State Road 52, north of the future Ridge Road extension and west of Sunlake Boulevard,

and live. “Deer are constantly being maimed and killed on these hazardous roads, and it’s very disturbing to see. “The new construction in the area needs to be reviewed and additional development in this area should be halted, if there is no funding to fix the road issues. “We certainly should not allow more development to increase in this area, which actually increases the chaos. “There are several new multi-tenant buildings being built right now. Once completed, the population will grow and cause more traffic issues. “It’s so bad right now that emergency vehicles are not able to respond quickly. “And, how awful this is, if you or a loved one needs emergency care. “So, we must stop any new developments until we get this traffic under control. “People are running red lights and blocking intersections, which is just causing mayhem. “It takes me over 35 minutes to get to I75 (Interstate 75) and it used to take 12 minutes. “There are six traffic lights in a short distance, and not one works to move the flow of traffic correctly. “There are too many businesses near the I-75 on- and off-ramps.This is extremely dangerous. “We need to stop new development or require developers to pay for the build on the roads necessary, prior to the development of new structures. It’s just really becoming too much,” Card said. During a different portion of the same meeting, Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore also expressed concerns about growing gridlock. He showed his colleagues photos he took of traffic backed up on Wesley Chapel

The bus garage phone numbers are as follows: • West Compound: 727-774-0400 • Northwest Compound: 727-774-0540 • Central Compound: 813-794-0520 • East Compound: 352-524-0560 • Southeast Compound: 813-794-0500

These delays will be reduced, as everyone adjusts to the new schedule. Pasco County Schools will have safety precautions in place, just as it did during the first week of school.

Boulevard, which turns into County Road 54. “My son practices and plays golf a lot at Lexington Oaks Golf Club,” Moore said. “I live in Seven Oaks, which is literally 5.9 miles away. “It’s taken me 45 minutes, to go 5.9 miles,” he said, noting he makes the trip between 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. By comparison, it only take 18 minutes to 21 minutes to get to Interstate 4, from Interstate 75, he said. The traffic that’s backed up is not waiting to get on I-75, but rather waiting to make its way through Pasco County, Moore said. “We have a lot of things coming up in this area. The area I just showed you is the exact area where an apartment complex was just approved.Another one (multifamily) in front of Lexington Oaks; another one is being built a block away. “If you go around the corner, that’s that one that got approved on Bruce B. Downs (Boulevard), and there’s a couple more that are coming up for votes in the future,” Moore said. “This road can’t handle any more. When I say no more — no more.” Moore continued: “That’s not a good quality of life.” “Nothing more can go around that area. We can’t handle any more. The citizens can’t handle any more,” said the commissioner, who successfully persuaded his colleagues to approve a temporary moratorium on new multifamily applications in a portion of his district. The board is expected to revisit that issue in early 2022 because Moore would like to include some additional areas that are now part of his district. The new areas became part of Moore’s District 2, when the county board approved new boundaries as part of the redistricting process that occurs every 10 years, after the U.S. Census count is completed.

FILE

Pasco County’s roadways are becoming more congested, as the county’s population grows. A number of construction projects that are intended to address the issue were halted earlier this year, but the work has resumed, so traffic flow should improve when those projects are completed — but that will take some time.

2021 offered special moments in local sports By Kevin Weiss

Sunlake High/University of Florida product Tommy Mace was selected 69th overall by the Cleveland Indians (now named Guardians) in the 2021 MLB first-year player draft.

T

his past year levied countless memories in the local sports scene — from shattered records and career achievements for individuals and teams, to several major events and showcases in the area. Here is a look back at some of the moments in sports in 2021, from across Pasco and Hillsborough counties, in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. (This is Part One of a two-part series.)

Shannon Saile, left, a national champion softball pitcher for the Oklahoma Sooners, explains the fundamentals of the fast pitch to 11-year-old Laila McClelland.

National champion returns home to teach

Land O’ Lakes native Shannon Saile was a part of history — guiding the University of Oklahoma women’s softball team to the 2021 NCAA Division I national title, serving as one of its top senior pitchers. With her decorated athletic career in tow, Saile’s next major task was organizing a series of fastpitch softball clinics to train the next generation of youth standouts. To do that, the 23-year-old returned to her central Pasco hometown and set foot on the same park ballfields that forged a pathway for myriad athletic accomplishments. The upstart Shannon Saile Pitching Clinic was held on July 25 at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, home to Land O’ Lakes Little League. About 30 girls — ages 8 to 15 — took part on a steamy Sunday, eager to take in guidance from Saile and other widely known pitching instructors and volunteers. With Saile’s tutelage, young campers sharpened their fastballs and secondary offerings like changeups, through arm path mechanics and leg drive techniques, as well as various speed, agility and balance drills. “I just hope that I can teach them the foundation of pitching, because it’s much more important than just getting out there and throwing pitches,” Saile explained to The Laker/Lutz News. “The drills are super important, because they help me grow my strength and my confidence in my pitches.” Besides learning newfound softball techniques, campers also had an opportunity to get signed autographs and take pictures with Saile, who’s become a household name in the sports world. She was invited to ESPN’s nationally televised 2021 ESPY Awards, for being part of one of the best moments from the year in sports. Saile goes down as one of the most accomplished — if not most accomplished — fastpitch softball players to ever come out of Land O’ Lakes High School and the greater Tampa Bay area. As a Gator, she amassed 517 strikeouts and a career 1.76 ERA in four varsity seasons from 2013 to 2016, also compiling a combined 41 wins, 31 complete games, 11 shutouts and five no-hitters. The advancement to the college ranks likewise went swimmingly for the 5-foot-7 right-hander. Saile began her Division I softball career at Florida International University, finding immediate success with a pair of sub-2.00 ERA seasons in the circle, before transferring to Oklahoma. As a redshirt senior this past season, Saile posted an impressive 1.70 ERA and 1.06 WHIP while being second on the team in wins (17), innings pitched (100.1), complete games (six), and strikeouts (132).

It’s not uncommon for at least a few ballplayers from area high schools and colleges to be taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) first-year player draft. This year 2021 was no different, as five local athletes from The Laker/Lutz News coverage area were taken in the nationally televised draft, which spanned 20 rounds (and 612) picks from July 11 through July 13: • Sunlake High/University of Florida pitcher Tommy Mace (Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Comp B, 69th overall) • Wharton High shortstop Zach Ehrhard (Boston Red Sox, 13th round, 376th overall) • Gaither High shortstop A.J. Graham (Pittsburgh Pirates, 18th round, 523rd overall) • Saint Leo University left-handed pitcher Jimmy Burnette (Toronto Blue Jays, 18th round, 543rd overall) • Gaither High/University of Texas third baseman Cam Williams (Kansas City Royals, 19th round, 559th overall) Every player, except for Ehrhard opted to sign with their drafted team, for various dol-

lar figures. Mace — the highest selection from the local community — inked with the Indians (now Guardians) for a $1.1 million signing bonus; Graham signed with the Pirates for $125,000; Burnette signed with Blue Jays for $50,000; and, Williams signed with the Royals for $25,000. Ehrhard, meanwhile, will play collegiate baseball at NCAA Division I Oklahoma State University, majoring in applied exercise science with a focus on strength and conditioning. He was this year’s recipient of the 2021 Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award, which honors a high school baseball player in Hillsborough County on the basis of outstanding athletic, scholastic and community achievements. (While slightly outside our coverage area in west Pasco County, Fivay High/University of Mississippi product Gunnar Hoglund went in the first round (19th overall) to the Blue Jays. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander from Hudson ultimately signed with the team for just under $3.25 million.)

Little League celebrates 50th anniversary The start of each Little League season often elicits a heightened level of nostalgia. With spring in the air, youth of all ages and skills partake in America’s favorite pastime, testing their mettle on the mound, at the plate and in the field. For Land O’ Lakes Little League, this year’s Opening Day festivities took on added significance:The organization celebrated its 50th anniversary on Feb. 27, at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, off Collier Parkway. The organization actually formed back in 1967 at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center (now Heritage Park) off U.S. 41, but it didn’t receive its first Little League charter until 1971. The local league has come a long way since its initial startup — boasting upwards of 800 boys and girls, ages 4 to 16, playing baseball and softball across 10 fields. The large ballfield took center stage in the league’s season-opening event. Teams from all age divisions were spread

across the infield and outfield, signaling the league’s staying power and sustained growth. First pitches were accurately thrown from veteran baseball players, as well softball Little League players. Local players sang the national anthem and read the league pledge. There was the unveiling, too, of a framed 50th anniversary “golden ticket” issued and signed by the Little League International Headquarters, which is based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The beauty of the organization is it’s a recreational format. It welcomes the novice player that may never make an all-star team or play high school ball, to others who have the potential to earn college scholarships and maybe play professionally someday. “I think every kid should play Little League,” Land O’ Lakes Little League President Gary Gwinn told The Laker/Lutz News.

Zephyrhills runner competes in U.S. Olympic trials Evan Miller’s sprint for a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Summer Olympics may have come up short — but it was still an experience most athletes can only ever dream about. The Zephyrhills athlete on June 25 competed in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at the legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Miller — then a rising senior at University of South Carolina — clocked 21.04 seconds in the first-round heat of the men’s 200-meter dash, finishing 23rd overall. He competed in Evan Miller the same heat against other widely known professional sprinters, including Terrance Laird and Jaron Flourney, among others. The competition was televised live nationally on NBC Sports Network. Miller’s trials mark was a shade off his personal best of 20.50 seconds — which he recorded at the Weems Baskin Relays hosted on-campus at South Carolina in late March; he wound up earning second-team NCAA All-American honors during the season, too. Miller was one of about 30 sprinters nationwide who either qualified or accepted an invitation, and declared for the men’s 200-meter trials event. From there, the top three men’s 200meter finishers at trials earned spots on the U.S. Olympic team — Noah Lyles (first, 19.74 seconds), Kenny Bednarek (second, 19.78) and Erriyon Knighton (third, 19.84). While disappointed with his own trials output overall, Miller relished the opportunity so very few earn — let alone coming off a 2020 track season hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. “All around, it was a really good experience,” Miller told The Laker/Lutz Newspaper.“It was kind of surreal that I was there with the top athletes in the country. It was just a really good feeling. I was kind of trying to take it all in, but I also couldn’t like believe it at the same time.” Before college, Miller had made a name for himself as a sprinter at Zephyrhills Christian Academy. His senior year, he won the Class 1A individual crown 100-meter dash (10.75) at the 2018 FHSAA State Track & Field Championships. He also was a leg of the school’s 4×100 relay team that won back-toback state crowns in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

NBA hopefuls showcase hoops skills in Wesley Chapel Pasco County and the greater Tampa Bay region isn’t really known for its basketball prowess, but that reputation, or lack thereof, may soon change. Pursuing dreams of playing professional basketball, a large group of athletes dropped by Wesley Chapel, of all places. In early June, some 50 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft-eligible hopefuls descended upon the area to showcase their athleticism and hoops skills in the inaugural Tampa Bay Pro Combine (TBPC), at the AdventHealth Sports Arena at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus of Pasco County. The elite-level hoopers — many from recognizable high and mid-major NCAA Division I programs — dribbled, dunked, jumped, shot and passed their way into the eyes and impressions of various NBA and international coaches and scouts. Several names may be familiar from deep runs in the 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball March Madness tournament, such as University of Southern California guard Tahj Eaddy, University of Houston forward Justin

games (5-on-5, 2-on-2 and 3-on-3), athletic testing and measurements, as well as a 3point shootout, dunk contest and more. The player selection committee was led by ESPN television analyst Fran Fraschilla and BasketballNews.com NBA Draft analyst Matt Babcock, who were there to evaluate players during the weekend. The competition came together in a matter of about six weeks, seeking to replicate the Virginia-based Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a long-running hoops combine event canceled a second-straight year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Quade Green was the leading scorer at the University of Washington this past season, at 15.4 points per game. Like others, it was his first time stepping into the Wiregrass Sports Campus. He came away impressed with the stateof-the-art digs. “This is a beautiful gym,” Green said, in an interview with The Laker/Lutz News.“Lot of great players here, great people around you, too. They’ve got connections. Life connections, too, for the long run.”

A look back at 2021

Sometimes, a picture really is worth a thousand words. Here’s an array of images that help tell the story of the year 2021 in The Laker/Lutz News region. Above, Capt. Emily Quintana, of the Zephyrhills High School Army JROTC, joined other cadets in a dignified ceremony to retire worn American flags. The event took place at the Oakside Cemetery in Zephyrhills.

Fourteen-year-old Cody Adams Jr., of Dade City, flashes the peace sign, as he rides the swing ride ‘Vertigo’ with his 10-year-old brother, Justin Young. Adams said that he likes the hand symbol, and does it all the time. Their mother, Jessica Young, waited on the ground while her sons rode the popular thrill ride, which rises nearly 90 feet in the air.

The right way to clear holiday waste By Mary Rathman mrathman@lakerlutznews.com

The City of Tampa’s Solid Waste and Environmental Management Department is working with city leaders to educate the public about the right way to recycle this holiday season, in an effort to stop shutdowns of recycling equipment, according to a news release. The average resident’s household waste will increase by more than 25%, the release says, as trash cans may be full of holiday food waste, shopping bags, bows and ribbons, packaging, and wrapping paper — all of which contribute to an additional 1 million tons a week to the landfills, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Families are encouraged to look for waste reduction opportunities — through reuse, composting and recycling. Certain items, such as Christmas lights, garland, ribbons, and electronics with rechargeable batteries, are known to be “tan-

glers” of recycling equipment and can cause hazardous conditions for the department’s employees. Acceptable items for recycling include wrapping paper (paper only); paper cards and envelopes; glass bottles and jars (Pasco County no longer accepts glass); and, plastic bottles and jugs. Unacceptable items include Christmas lights (accepted at select scrap metal recyclers); bubble wrap and plastic air pillows (accepted at select retail stores); foil and glitter wrapping paper; paper and plastic plates; and polystyrene foam. Hillsborough residents can look up items in the new Tampa Trash and Recycling app, or visit Tampa.gov/recycle to determine the correct disposal method for an item. The app is available for download on Apple and Android products. Residents in Pasco can visit Pascocountyfl.net/187/East-Pasco-Facilities, for more information.

Center Ice’s Gordie Zimmermann hailed by North Tampa Bay Chamber Duane Powell, of PascoHernando State College, wins special award, too By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

It wasn’t all that long ago that there was no AdventHealth Center Ice in Wesley Chapel. And, if the facility — which has the largest ice rink in the Southeastern United States — had not opened in 2017, the community would have missed out on all sorts of big events and special occasions. For instance, National Hockey League prospects would not have skated into Pasco County to show fans and pro scouts their skills in shot-making, blocking, toughness and teamwork. The center, at 3173 Cypress Ridge Blvd., would not have been used as the training grounds for the gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Olympic women’s ice hockey team, either. Plus, it wouldn’t house the Women’s Sports Herstory Museum — which is dedicated to female pioneers in hockey. And, the coveted Stanley Cup never would made a stop there — thus, depriving the young hockey players who had the chance to see it, of that thrilling and inspirational experience. The list of big events and special moments at the ice center goes on and on. And, it was Gordie Zimmermann, the facility’s owner manager partner, who had the vision for Center Ice, and its enormous possibilities. He received recognition for the center’s contributions to the economy and quality of life in Wesley Chapel, during the North Tampa Bay Chamber’s Dec. 7 breakfast meeting. Michael Berthelette, the chamber’s outgoing chairman, singled out Zimmermann by presenting him with the Chairman’s Award for 2021, during the meeting at the Porter Campus of Pasco-Hernando State College. “I really took some time to really think about who I wanted to honor with my chairman’s award for 2021,” Berthelette told those gathered. He said Zimmermann demonstrated that the ice center could achieve its goals, despite the challenges. He told Zimmermann the award is “in recognition for your contributions toward a broad range of economic development ac-

tivities that demonstrate substantial investment in our community, your economic development efforts have required agile planning and a comprehensive approach to implement solutions that have made the North Tampa Bay community a more attractive place to live, work and play.” Zimmermann was surprised by the honor. He told the crowd that he thought he was just joining some of his staff for breakfast at the chamber meeting. In accepting the award, Zimmermann said: “You guys have been awesome. It’s been a great community. “I just want to thank the whole community, all of the businesses, the educational systems, my staff — unbelievable staff. “The chamber has been great. I just really appreciate it. I didn’t expect this, today,” Zimmermann said. Hope Kennedy, president and CEO of the chamber, recalled the initial reaction when chamber leaders heard about the plans for the ice center. “We all looked out there and saw a mud swamp. So, we were all a little bit nervous about this vision and dream,” Kennedy said. “But to see it all happen — and what it has done for our community. It has put Wesley Chapel not only on the regional map, (but) the international map. “So, Gordie, I’m very proud to stand by you and your whole team that you’ve built there. “It’s exciting,” Kennedy said. Then, as the chamber’s top executive, Kennedy also had the opportunity to present a special award. In choosing a recipient for the President and CEO’s Award, Kennedy said she always seeks “to recognize an unsung hero that goes above and beyond.” She then detailed some of the ways that this year’s honoree has been instrumental to the chamber’s success. “He has added tables. He has taken away tables. He has put out cones for me. He’s lugged in food for me,” Kennedy said, adding that he’s also kept coffee from spilling all over the place. Then, turning to the recipient — who did not know that he’d been selected — she said: “You have done so much for me and this organization over the last five years. I couldn’t think of anybody better to present this award to, than to you, Duane Powell.” The campus facilities manager for PHSC was obviously stunned — but also delighted — by the news. Like Zimmermann, Powell also thought he was just coming to the meeting for breakfast, said Kevin O’ Farrell, provost of PHSC’s Porter Campus.

Raising funds and awareness Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s five offices partnered with the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation to help raise funds and the awareness of breast cancer, its symptoms and treatments, according to a news release. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Florida (excluding skin cancer), and is estimated that about 12,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, the release says. The tax collector’s offices promoted the sale of the “End Breast Cancer” specialty license plates, as well as the voluntary check-off donations on automobile registrations. The 23 license plates that were sold combined with cash donations totaled

$10,000 to help “end suffering caused by breast cancer,” the release says. “It is a great honor to work with the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation each year to assist in raising awareness of the needs of breast cancer patients, educate the public on the importance of early detection and to help fund organizations that are working to find better treatments and ultimately a cure,” said Fasano, in the release. Fasano was grateful that the community once again supported its efforts to help find a way to end a disease that afflicts so many. For information about the foundation, visit FloridaBreastCancer.org, or call Cathy Cruz, marketing communications manager, at 305-631-2134.

New chamber chairman challenges members to hit ‘reset button’ Outgoing chairman reflects on chamber achievements By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When Javan Grant joined the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce in 2014, he said it was a smaller chamber but its “level of engagement” was infectious. “I still remember one of the first events that I attended. It was a lunch at Tampa Bay Golf & Country Club. I literally knew no one, going in. When I walked out, I had a small group of friends. “It was that experience, that day, that led me to jump headfirst into getting involved, in not only the chamber and its mission, but also our local community,” said Grant, recently named chairman of the chamber’s board of directors. Early on, Grant said, he recognized “it was only a matter of time before this chamber was going to explode.” And, that’s exactly what happened, he added, detailing the chamber’s expansion. “First, it merged with the New Tampa Chamber, creating a two-county regional chamber. “Next, in 2017, we merged with TrinityOdessa Chamber, creating the largest chamber in Pasco County, he said, that serves all of Pasco, and New Tampa, too. The membership growth, of 26%, was significant, he said. “It all culminated in 2019 when the

chamber achieved what many here thought may have been impossible when it first became an organization,” he said. The North Tampa Bay Chamber was named the 2019 Florida Chamber of the Year. “The chamber was hitting its stride, membership was up, growth was exploding and engagement was off the charts. The sky was truly, the limit,” Grant continued. “Then, Covid happened and with it, not only changes that impacted each of your lives and each of your businesses, but it impacted the chamber as well. “We went from being chamber of the year in 2019 — with packed events like we have today to having no events — to having to create a chamber road show, just so we could provide some type of engagement for our members,” Grant told those gathered at the chamber’s Dec. 7 breakfast meeting. “Like many of you, and many of your businesses, the chamber had to pivot and we had to pivot quickly. And, it hasn’t been easy, just like I’m sure it hasn’t been easy for any of you. “But slowly, slowly we weathered the COVID storm, and now look at us, two years, post the pandemic, here we are, packed house. Enjoying each other’s company. Enjoying each other’s friendship, once again. Being together, once again. “Yet,” he continued,“we still have such a long way to go.” Grant then challenged chamber members:“Jump headfirst into that arena with us. Help us hit reset and relaunch the chamber for 2022. We need your passion. We need your engagement. We need every single one

of you, and those outside of here, to help bring us back to where we were before COVID hit. “You’ve got to remember: This is your chamber. It’s not just mine. It’s not just our board’s. It’s yours. So, ask yourself: What would you like to see accomplished, for the chamber to accomplish in 2022? “Let’s get fully engaged. Let’s relaunch the North Tampa Bay Chamber.” While Grant focused on inspiring fresh energy, outgoing chairman Michael Berthelette spent a few minutes reflecting on the chamber’s recent accomplishments, despite COVID obstacles. “2021 was a most challenging year, in every aspect possible. Unprecedented is al-

most an understatement,” Berthelette said. “Your chamber team demonstrated tremendous leadership over the past 12 months. “Our team made savvy financial decisions, finding new sources of income and cutting operating expenses, to deliver a positive financial year,” he said. One of his top priorities, as chairman, was in the area of social justice. “We took a very public stand on the issues of equality and inclusion,” he said, noting the chamber received a Business of Pride Award in June, from a partnership between The Tampa Bay Business Journal and The Tampa Bay LGBT Chamber. It received the honor for being “an outstanding LGBT ally, advocate, company and chamber who’s making a difference in advocating equality in the business world,” Berthelette said. He also talked about an appearance by Hope Kennedy, the chamber president and CEO, on a national call advocating support for the Equality Act. The call was organized by Freedom for All Americans Coalition in Washington D.C. A news release detailing the event said the Equality Act would modernize the nation’s civil rights laws by including explicit protections for LGBTQ+ people, as well as improve protections for women, people of color, and people of all faiths. “Thank you to Hope and the North Tampa Bay Chamber for your continued advocacy in passage of The Equality Act, and for your leadership, in the space of social justice,” Berthelette said.

Let Your Pet Make a Mess! TPS HandleS THe ReST! By Trevor Lloyd

There are some jobs that most people really just don’t want to do. That’s where Tampa Poop & Scoop (TPS) enters. No mess will ever be left behind by your pets, again. Bathroom messes, to be precise. Tampa Poop & Scoop ushers in a new era of pet/owner freedom. Now we can let our fluffy friends relieve as they please, without the hassle of wondering “when” or “where” the backyard business has taken place. It’s the true definition of out of sight, out of mind. “We take care of the No. 2 so you can spend more time with your No. 1,” said owner Josey Davis. It’s professional work, but Davis will be the first to admit it’s certainly not glamorous. For him, that’s OK. The less time owners have to spend picking up after their pets, the more time they can spend loving them. “I wanted to find an industry that so many turn away from, come in as a young mind, and bring a new perspective to the idea of what good service can be,” said Davis. TPS offers an all-inclusive pet waste cleanup. It will show up, clean up and head out leaving nothing behind for you to worry about. It also will keep you

updated along the way, which saves you time to go about your day. If the yard needs to be cleaned by tonight in your rush to prepare for company, TPS is on it. “My mindset is: I don’t make customers wait around for an estimate,” said Davis. “I’ll be out there the next day, or even the same day, if need be.” A Wesley Chapel native, Davis currently studies within the entrepreneur track at the University of Tampa. He has one more semester until he graduates and already is making a name for himself within the Tampa area as a motivated, young business professional. His love of animals and desire to keep them happy bore the necessity to create TPS. That, paired with his long-term effort of using his business as a vessel to donate to local animal rescue efforts, being the very best answer to our pet’s nature call made sense. Moving forward, he looks forward to the day when he can give back to entities such as the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. “It comes down to keeping animals healthy and happy,” said Davis. “If I can do that, while giving back to animals that need help in our community, then I’ve provided the service I want to give.”
