Obama Signs Jobs Bill as CBC Chair Calls for Specific Help for Blacks

BY HAZEL TRICE EDNEY NNPA EDITOR-IN-CHIEF WASHINGTON (NNPA) — As the Black unemployment rate rose slightly last month, President Obama has signed the long-awaited jobs bill with hopes of turning around employment rates, which for African-Americans still nearly doubles the national average of 9.5 percent.

“The Manufacturing Enhancement Act of 2010 will create jobs, help American companies compete, and strengthen manufacturing as a key driver of our economic recovery,” Obama said during a bill signing ceremony at the White House recently. “To make their products, manufacturers — some of whom are represented here today — often have to import certain materials from other countries and pay tariffs on those materials. This legislation will reduce or eliminate some of those tariffs, which will significantly lower costs for American companies across the manufacturing landscape — from cars to chemicals; medical devices to sporting goods.

And that will boost output, support good jobs here at home, and lower prices for American consumers.”

Obama’s stroke of the pen will not wipe out all of the damage done during the economic crisis that started in earnest during the Bush administration. But, there are high hopes in Black communities where the jobless rate reached back to 15.6 percent last month, up from 15.4 in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment among Black males — though down significantly from its high of 19 percent in March — is still at 16.7 percent, nearly twice the average White rate of 8.6 and White male rate of 8.8 percent.

There is contention among some that Obama may need to take specific actions to help quell the disparate economic suffering in the Black community.

“Unemployment rates for African-Americans and Latinos remain unacceptably high at 15.6 percent and 12.1 percent, respectively, and highlighting the disproportionate impact the recession has had and the need for targeted efforts to address chronic unemployment,” Congressional Black Caucus Chair Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said in a statement.

BRIEFS Memorial Honors Victims of L.A.’s ‘Grim Sleeper’ LOS ANGELES (AP) — Victims of the “Grim Sleeper” serial killer were honored with a photo memorial in South Los Angeles.

Pictures of 10 slain women were placed in front of Bethel AME Church on Aug. 10 — the 25th anniversary of the first killing.

Organizers say it’s an attempt to humanize victims who have become little more than names with the passage of time.

People left flowers and candles and penned notes of consolation to the families on the photographs.

Civic leaders also stopped by and an evening memorial service was planned.

Local mechanic Lonnie Franklin Jr. has been charged with murdering women in a series of attacks from 1985 to 2007. A 14-year gap between assaults led police to dub the mysterious killer the “Grim Sleeper.”

Police say DNA evidence led them to arrest Franklin last month.

L.A. Carwash Owners Sentenced To Prison (AP) — The owners of four Los Angeles car washes who were accused of mistreating workers have

each been sentenced to a year in prison as part of a plea agreement.

Brothers Benny and Nissan Pirian also were ordered Monday to pay $1.25 million in unpaid wages to 54 workers and received four years probation.

The men each pleaded no contest Friday to a half-dozen criminal counts, including conspiracy and grand theft, and several labor code violations.

Prosecutors say the brothers’ employees worked for years without receiving minimum wage or overtime, and worked in hazardous conditions where they were regularly exposed to chemicals and also were not provided with drinking water.

A prosecutor says the $1.25 million payment will be divided among the 54 workers named in the criminal complaint.

Excessive Bell Salaries Prompt Bills in California SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) —California lawmakers are debating bills stemming from a salary scandal in the small Los Angeles suburb of Bell that set off a fierce debate about the compensation of municipal employees.

The deadline to introduce new bills in the California Legislature passed in February, but lawmakers

are amending existing bills to allay fears that other municipalities could be paying excessive salaries to their employees.

Under one bill going before the Legislature this week, SB501, all city, county and school district employees would have to report their compensation each year and have it posted on a public website.

The secretary of state would develop a form for employees to report salaries, stipends and other reimbursement.

“We have all heard about the pillaging in the city of Bell,” Assemblyman Hector De La Torre, D-South Gate, co-sponsor of the bill, told colleagues in a recent address. “This is one measure ... that will be coming through the process so that we will never see this situation again.”

Sen. Lou Correa, D-Anaheim, said he introduced SB501 to increase transparency in all levels of government. He said members of the Legislature and their staffs already report their compensation publicly.

“People look through this stuff, and I think that’s good for the system,” Correa said.

That bill will be heard in the Assembly Local Government Committee on Wednesday.

And we knew that it would require an ongoing effort across all fronts.”

“Adam Powell knew (the situation) when they wouldn’t let him be seated,” Rangel said about Powell’s problems. “And the courts, of course, overruled it. But if I can’t get my dignity back here, then fire your best shot in getting rid of me through expulsion.”

At the core of his speech was a call for the ethics committee to move with alacrity and not let him hang in the wind until November.

“And maybe, just maybe, the members of the ethics committee might think about telling me when they think they might have a hearing, so that whatever they decide, I can let my constituents, my (family), my friends know that I did the best I could, as an American, as a patriot, and someone who loves this country,” Rangel concluded. “Thank you for your attention. Go home.”

African Diaspora South Africa’s Women’s Day Takes Aim at Inequality Special to the NNPA from GIN (GIN) – Following in the steps of 20,000 women who in 1956 marched to the Union Buildings, seat of government, in Pretoria, to protest racist pass laws, hundreds of women marked the day, Aug. 9, known as national Women’s Day. Led by Tshwane executive mayor Gwen Ramokgopa, the march was held under the banner of “Working together for equal opportunity and progress for women.�

Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille paid tribute to the daughters and granddaughters of the women of 1956. “Over half a century later, on Women’s Day ... there is cause for some celebration, but much needs do be done.�

A more critical note was sounded by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who faulted the African National Party (ANC) party for failing to implement its own policies – especially those concerning women. “I wouldn’t say the ANC has failed women ... it’s the responsibility of every South African to transform society,� she said. But South African women need more than annual women’s rallies to solve their inequality, she said.

dium in the Eastern Cape, President Jacob Zuma agreed that rapid gender and racial transformation in the private sector was crucial. He urged men to “confront their attitudes and insecurities.�

Currently, less than 3 percent of top level directors in the private sector are Black women, while coloured and Indian women make up only 1 percent each of all top management positions, according to a new study.

Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, said a planned new law would look at equal pay for equal work and “5050 representation and participation of women in decision-making structures.� She said the bill will be introduced in Parliament soon.

Nigeria: Former VP Announces Presidential Bid

BY BASHIR ADIGUN ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria’s former vice president Atiku Abubakar, who was accused of bribing a U.S. congressman while in office, announced Sunday he would seek the nomination of the oil-rich country’s ruling party to run for the presidency.

Abubakar, 63, would need the

People’s Democratic Party to again accept him as a member before contesting the primary, as he ran unsuccessfully as a presidential candidate for an opposition party in 2007.

However, his candidacy as a Muslim from northern Nigeria could pressure the party after a Christian from the south became Nigeria’s president earlier this year following the death of its elected Muslim leader.

At a news conference Sunday, Abubakar told reporters he came to the decision after talking with family, friends and supporters. “I have no illusions about the toughness of the challenges ahead, but with the support of our people we can overcome them,� he said. He took only a few questions from reporters before rowdy supporters who flooded the event drowned out their voices.

Abubakar served as vice president under President Olusegun Obasanjo during his two, four-year term presidency. Their time in office marked Nigeria’s return to democracy after a string of military dictatorships and failed governments that followed the nation’s independence from Britain in 1960.

However, Abubakar received the most international attention during the trial of ex-Louisiana congressman William Jefferson, whose freezer was stocked with $90,000 in cash at the time of an FBI raid.

During Jefferson’s 2009 federal trial, a Nigerian businessman testi-

fying for the prosecution told jurors that Abubakar paid Jefferson $100,000 to help Abubakar make political contacts in the United States. A lawyer for Abubakar denied the allegation at the time.

Orphaned at age 8, Abubakar worked through law school and joined the Nigerian customs service, rising to the secondhighest position after 20 years.

He left as a wealthy businessman and his support helped ensure Obasanjo’s electoral wins in 1999 and 2003.

He fell out with the ruling party after refusing to support a constitutional amendment allowing Obasanjo to run for a third term.

Abubakar is the second high-profile Nigerian to announce his plans to run in next year’s election, which could be held as early as January. Former Nigerian military leader Ibrahim Babangida, who seized power in a bloodless coup and annulled an election intended to hand over power to a civilian leader, also has said he will run.

President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from Nigeria’s oil-rich and restive southern delta, has yet to say whether he’ll run. Jonathan came to office after the May 5 death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, a Muslim from the country's north.

On Friday, the ruling party’s executive committee said Jonathan could stand in the 2011 election, though that wouldn’t preclude any other candidate seeking the nomination during the primary.

Shrimping Season in La. Reopens After Spill

BY CAIN BURDEAU AND MARY FOSTER, AP WRITERS GRAND ISLE, La. – Fishermen who spent much of the summer mopping up oil from BP’s disastrous spill got back to work as the fall shrimping season in Louisiana’s coastal waters opened Monday amid anxiety over whether the catch will be tainted by crude and whether anyone will buy it even if it is clean.

Scores of shrimpers headed out at first light, and early reports indicated a plentiful and clean catch. But a new analysis of federal estimates show the optimism may be premature about how much oil remains in the Gulf.

“We’re not seeing any oil where I’m at. No tar balls, nothing,” said Brian Amos, a 53-year-old shrimper who trawled in his 28-foot skiff, The Rolling Thunder, in a bay near Empire.

It was a step toward normalcy for many coastal towns that have been in limbo in the nearly four months since the spill shut down fishing, an economic linchpin for dock owners, restaurants and many other businesses along the Louisiana coast. Louisiana ranks first in the nation in shrimp, blue crab, crawfish and oysters, and the state's seafood industry overall generates an estimated $2.4 billion a year.

Five Georgia scientists who reviewed the data said Aug. 16 that instead of only 26 percent of the oil remaining, as a federal report said earlier this month, it’s actually closer to 80 percent.

“Where has all the oil gone? It hasn’t gone anywhere. It still lurks in the deep,” said University of Georgia marine scientist Chuck Hopkinson. He headed the quick independent look by the Georgia Sea Grant program at the estimates the White House released.

White House energy adviser Carol Browner said on morning news shows earlier this month: “More than three-quarters of the oil is gone. The vast majority of the oil is gone.”

The Georgia team said it is a misinterpretation of data to claim that oil that is dissolved or dispersed is gone.

“The bottom line is most of it is still out there,” Hopkinson told The Associated Press. “There’s nothing in the report to substantiate the 26 percent.”

Also Monday: • Retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, who is overseeing the oil-spill crisis for the government, said it will take at least a week to permanently plug the well with mud and cement once he gives the go-ahead for the “bottom kill.” He said he is not sure when that will happen, because scientists are working on ways to perform the kill without further damaging the well.

• The Obama administration announced it is requiring environmental reviews for all new deep-water oil drilling, ending the kind of exemptions that allowed BP to drill its ill-fated well with little scrutiny.

• BP said it will give federal and state health organizations $52 million to help people dealing with stress and anxiety because of the spill, which erupted after the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 workers. The oil finally stopped flowing in mid-July after BP put a temporary cap on the blown-out well.

Shrimping is also open in state-controlled waters off Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and Texas. Federal waters, which are open nearly year-round for boats to trawl for bigger shrimp, remain closed to shrimping off Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, though some spots could open within days, depending on the results of extensive tests.

Laboratory tests on seafood from the gulf have shown little hazard from oil, and a test is being developed for the chemicals used to disperse the crude, though there is no evidence they build up in seafood. Still, shrimpers are worried that the public won't want what they catch.

“I feel that we have had a bad rap on the perception of our product,” said Andrew Blanchard, who waited Monday for shrimp boats to arrive at his processing plant in Chauvin. Fewer arrived than normal, five versus the usual 20 on a normal opening

day, but he said that was because most boats are still doing cleanup work for BP, not because of any problem with the shrimp.

Ravin Lacoste of Theriot said he believes his fellow shrimpers know better than to turn in a bad catch. “If you put bad shrimp on the market — we in enough trouble now with our shrimp,” Lacoste said.

“You might can go in the closed waters and catch more shrimp. But it ain’t worth it.”

Prices spiked soon after the rig explosion, fueled by fears that the shrimp would soon be unavailable. But then, despite state and federal assurances that the seafood reaching the market was safe, demand dropped and prices crashed a month ago.

Things were precarious in the industry even before the spill. For the past decade, shrimpers along the Gulf Coast have had to contend with hurricanes, high fuel prices and a flood of imported shrimp.

Louisiana’s shrimp harvest was valued at $240 million in 2000, but that dropped to about $133 million last year. The number of shrimp licenses issued by the state plummeted from about 44,000 in 1986 to 14,000 last year.

Still, there are reasons for hope. There were fears that the spill would kill large amounts of shrimp larvae. But Martin Bourgeois, a state fisheries biologist, said initial observations show they may have made it through intact.

opponents of the $100 million, 13-story project are indeed anti-Muslim. But he said many Americans have genuine, understandable questions about Islam and extremism.

In light of those fears, and the opposition of many relatives of 9/11 victims, Asmal said organizers should dramatically scale back the project to just a simple mosque, despite their legal right to construct what they want.

“Winning in the court of law is not going to help improve the image of Muslims nationwide,” said Asmal, a Massachusetts physician. “You have to win the hearts and minds of the ordinary American people.”

The project has touched off a national debate over religious tolerance, American ideals and the stillfresh pain of the terrorist attacks. The center’s leaders, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, and his wife, Daisy Khan, have a long record of interfaith outreach in New York and beyond. They insist the center will be a voice for moderate Islam and will welcome people of all religions. Supporters are outraged that critics suspect the couple of an extremist agenda.

Asra Nomani, author of “Standing Alone: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam,” said she backs the idea of the mosque in principle but believes the feelings of families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks should trump the plan.

“I haven’t been able to support the building of the mosque right there in

Even among American Muslims who back the idea, there has been grumbling about what they consider the organizers’ public relations missteps. A plan to build what would essentially be a local city mosque has now turned into a national confrontation that is roiling Muslim communities nationwide.

Rauf’s decision to remain overseas without making a statement on the controversy has also caused some frustration. Khan, and developer Sharif ElGamal of SoHo Properties, which owns the building, have mostly been the public face of Park51.

“The total absence of Feisal Rauf has a ‘Where’s Waldo’ quality that is maddening in itself,” U.S. Muslim writer Aziz Poonawalla, who supports the center, told the blog ordinary-gentlemen.com. “I’m quite capable of defending Rauf against some of the accusations against him, but am not inclined to carry his water for him while he gallivants about the globe.”

Beyond misgivings about the location, some U.S. Muslims have raised concerns about what the mosque could become after Rauf and Khan retire and inevitably turn the center over to new leadership. Like houses of

Nomani said American Muslims have not fully confronted extremism in Islam, which makes her worried that any mosque has the potential to become a haven for those with rigid views.

“Yes, there is prejudice against Muslims in the modern day, but also Muslims in the modern day have an extremist problem,” Nomani said.

Tawfik Hamid, an Egyptian scholar and reformer who said he was once a member of a terrorist group, said he had a “conditional objection” to the proposed Islamic center.

He said it was not enough for Park51 leaders to call themselves moderate. Instead, they should “clearly and unambiguously” reject radicalization by opposing specific extremist practices, such as killing apostates, stoning women for adultery, calling Jews “pigs and monkeys” and "declaring war" on non-Muslims who refuse to convert.

“This, in my view, will be perceived by radicals in Islam as a defeat for their ideology,” said Hamid, senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for

Policy Studies. “They think in a very primitive way. If they see a mosque near ground zero, this would certainly be perceived as a sign of victory for alQaeda. In the end, they will think, ‘They are bowing to us.’ ” Few American Muslims who lost relatives in the terrorist strikes have spoken out, but those who have are also divided.

Talat Hamdani, a Muslim whose son Salman, a New York police cadet and emergency medical technician, was killed on Sept. 11, supports the proposal.

“I’m not fighting for a mosque.

I’m fighting for my rights,” she said.

By contrast, Neda Bolourchi of Los Angeles, a native of Iran whose mother was on one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center, opposes the plan.

“I fear that over time, it will cultivate a fundamentalist version of the Muslim faith, embracing those who share such beliefs and hating those who do not,” she wrote in a Washington Post op-ed. “To the supporters of this new Islamic cultural center, I must ask: Build your ideological monument somewhere else, far from my mother's grave, and let her rest.”

Wright’s Ex-Wife Says He Left Her House With Drugs MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The ex-wife of slain former NBA player Lorenzen Wright told police she saw him leave her home carrying money and a box of drugs the night he disappeared, according to court documents obtained Wednesday.

Sherra Wright said her ex-husband left her home at 10:30 p.m. on July 18 with the drugs, returned a short time later, then left again with an unspecified amount of money, said an affidavit for a search warrant

Before he left, Sherra Wright said she overheard her ex-husband on the telephone telling someone that he was going to “flip something for $110,000,� the document said.

Sherra Wright said Lorenzen Wright left her home in a car with a person she said she could not identify. Hours later, police dispatchers received a 911 call from Wright's cell phone and heard noises like gunshots before the call was dropped.

Wright’s body was found July 28 in woods outside Memphis. The 34-year-old had been missing for 10 days. No arrests have been made in the homicide and Memphis police

will not discuss whether they have a motive or suspects in the shooting death.

The affidavit said Sherra Wright gave the statements to police in the Memphis suburb of Collierville, where she lives, on July 27 five days after the former University of Memphis basketball star's mother filed a missing person report.

Sherra Wright also told police that her ex-husband owned a shotgun that he kept at her home and a handgun he kept inside the family van. A search of the home and the van failed to turn up the weapons, the affidavit said.

Police did find shell casings of different caliber bullets at the scene where Wright was shot, but they could not find Wright’s cell phone.

The affidavit said police were going to use documents showing ownership of the two weapons to see if they match the bullet shell casings recovered at the crime scene.

Wright, a 6-foot-11 forwardcenter, played with five teams during his 13-year NBA career. He averaged 8 points and 6.4 rebounds in 778 career NBA games.

BY JOY CHILDS CONTRIBUTING WRITER There they were: With bodies swingin’ and swayin’ — and toes tappin’ and fingers poppin’ — the annual Long Beach Jazz Festival brought out lovers of all that jazz has become. From smooth jazz to straight-ahead, folks flocked to the grassy knoll and beautiful lagoon that has been its staging area for the past 23 years.

The official theme of this year’s Long Beach Jazz Festival may have been “Jazz Up Your Summer,” but really, it should have been “the summer of reunions.” The festival was honored to be the first music venue in California to host the reunion of the groundbreaking

Houston), there was “Way Back Home.” There’s no doubt that the Jazz Crusaders were there at the creation of smooth jazz — and no doubt that they remain indescribably smooth today.

The first evening ended on a high-energy note. Smooth jazz master Boney James came out dancing and skipping, showing no visible signs of the recent near-fatal car accident which nearly claimed his life. The crowd opted to join his energetic display and partied with him on his “All Night Long.”

Saturday’s show really kicked off with the siren stylings of Melanie Fiona. Given that some of her earliest musical influences were The Supremes and The Ronettes, it was easy to discern those artists in the Motown-tinged “Please Don’t Go”; the Ronettes-inspired “Johnny”; and “You Stop My Heart” (which samples Frankie Avalon’s “Venus”). She’s most known for her biggest hits to date, “Give It To Me Right” (featuring a sampling of The Zombies’ “Time of the Season”) and her anthem “Ay Yo,” to which her fans amply jammed with her and her two backup singers.

The stage was them given over to “A Tribute to Grover Washington, Jr.,” which showcased saxophonDave Perry Jr. for the L.A. Watts Times ists Tom Scott and Ronnie Laws.; all-

Although saxophonist Wilton Felder was forced to cancel due to illness, he was ably represented by as Felder protégé Euge Groove. Original members Joe Sample on piano (son Nick was on upright electric bass) and trombonist Wayne Henderson were in full effect on their ’60s catalog. These had major fun with major Jazz Crusaders hits like “The Thing,” “Scratch” (sounding much like it did when it was recorded at the old Lighthouse jazz club) and a funky, sneaky groove on “Street Life.” Drummer Moyes Lucas did Stix Hooper proud on “Snowflake.”

For that Texas vibe for the home boys in attendance (remember: the Jazz Crusaders hail from

Robert Wilson, one third of the funkadelic brotherly trio, the GAP Band, passed away in Palmdale, California, on Aug. 15, his family announced.

One of the funkiest bass players in R&B, Robert, together with his brothers, Ronnie and Charlie, created some of the biggest R&B and funk hits in the ’70s and ’80s, including “You Dropped a Bomb On Me,” “Outstanding,” “Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)” and “Oops Upside Your Head.”

“My brother Robert was a bad boy on the bass,” stated brother Charlie.

“We shared a bond as brothers, musicians and friends. I loved him and losing him is difficult for both Ronnie and I. The music world has lost a very talented man.”

Robert was a legendary bass player whose style of play inspired Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller and the late Wayman Tisdale, also a Tulsa native, among others. At the time of Tisdale’s death, he and Robert were working on a solo project. One of Robert’s classic bass solos was on the GAP Band hit, “Shake.”

The GAP Band first performed as the Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The group shortened its name to The GAP Band in 1973.

Their hits have been sampled and covered by R&B and Hip-Hop artists including Nas, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Notorious B.I.G., Blackstreet, Shaquille O’Neal, Mia X, Mary J. Blige and Madonna.

Musicians inspired by their music include R. Kelly, Keith Sweat, Ruff Endz, Guy, Mint Condition, Jagged Edge and Aaron Hall.

around good guy bass man Paul Jackson, Jr.; and Jason Miles on drums. Washington, who died in 1999, practically invented the smooth jazz genre back in the ’70s with his silky smooth renditions of “East River Drive” and “Let It Flow (for Dr. J).”

Chanteuse Chanté Moore made the most of her duets with Laws on Washington’s “Just the Two of Us” and a version of “Inner City Blues” that made the audience wanna holler. As could have been predicted, one of Washington’s most recognizable hits, “Mr. Magic,” brought the crowd to its feet with the predominantly mature showing off those good ole dance moves. Said LBJF producer Al Williams: “They did Grover well, didn’t they?” That, they did.

Up last were Dave Koz and Jonathan Butler with a special guest, percussionist Sheila E. The three teamed up on a cut from Koz’s new CD “Getaway,” while Butler brought back the ’80s danceable love song “Sara, Sara.”

The final day three — though it

had the smallest crowd — had the biggest reception: first, for the straight-ahead jazz grooves of festival founder Al Williams and his Jazz Society (with the kick-butt thumb plucking of bassist Nedra Wheeler). Next, substituting for an ailing Laura Izibor was the popular Bay Area Goapele, whose fans from that area were very appreciative that she sang songs from her “Closer” and “Milk and Honey” CDs. Back in 1986, trumpeter Miles Davis recorded the Grammy-winning “Tutu” to honor the archbishop. His bassist, Marcus Miller, composed and arranged the title song — and, along with trumpeter Christian Scott doing wonders in filling in for Miles, rose the true jazz fusion stakes with “Tutu Revisited.”

Undoubtedly, though, the night belonged to Al Jarreau and The George Duke Trio, who did everything from “Take Five” to Duke’s super-funky “Reach for It” — the one song that prompted dancing, singing — and an encore.

It’s a sure thing that the LBJF next year will be a must-attend.

On Aug. 11, 1965, a community — which some say was besieged by police and poor economic and social conditions, and frustrated by what seemed to be growing unequal rights — ignited into five days of rebelling that heightened its struggle for self-determination, self-policing and economic development.

The direct incident that caused the 1965 Watts Rebellion was when a California Highway Patrol officer stopped Marquette Frye and his brother for allegedly speeding.

According to oral and documented reports, a crowd gathered as Frye resisted arrest and his mother tried to calm him down. Police back up was called and three were arrested.

Shortly after, Watts was burning.

According to residents and historians, the community burned because people were fed up with being brutalized in police stations and sent home on foot.

“I feel like what caused the rebellion was the complete exhaustion of people’s patience with being suppressed and contained by very, very aggressive enforcement tactics by the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department),” said Timothy Watkins, president and CEO of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). “People were so suppressed and oppressed in their condition of poverty that it just got to the point of overflow. They couldn’t take it anymore.”

Timothy’s father, Ted Watkins, founded the WLCAC after the rebellion, to improve the quality of life for people in Watts and surrounding communities.

Dick Gregory, comedian and civil rights activist, relived one night of the rebellion, specifically when he was shot in the leg. He had hit the streets after working outside of L.A. with the great jazz singer Sarah Vaughn.

some Black leaders, and when we got there it was a housing project where they were shooting at the cops and the cops were regrouping and we stood there,” Gregory said. “The cops said, ‘Ni**er, get out of here!’ I looked and said, ‘Man this could be a blood bath.’ Now I don’t have a problem if I’m shooting at you.

You have a right to shoot back at me and we can talk about racism later ... but they were going to wipe them all out.”

The National Guard had been called in and when Gregory saw the shooting coming out of the housing projects, he ran ahead of the cops because they weren’t ready to move, Gregory said.

“I put my back to the cops and my front to them (the crowd). I said, ‘Ya’ll get out of here. Run. Get out of here! All of ya’ll are going to get wiped out!’And then, pow! ... they shot me.”

Gregory said he was in Watts to study the rebellion because he did not understand it, but eventually he realized he was witnessing a revolution that had reached a boiling point.

“Every rebellion … (was) tipped off by a police action and a ghetto dweller, and it just all boiled off to, ‘No more of this,’ and that’s what you saw in Watts and Detroit and Chicago,” Gregory said, referring to other uprisings in that era.

According to Watkins, social conditions in Watts, for the most part, are worse now than before the rebellion.

“What has happened is that the group that is in power, which is a predominantly Anglo group, has figured out that they don’t have to keep the lid on the pressure cooker so tight,” Watkins said. “They can loosen it a little bit, and even though the contents of poverty are just boiling, it won’t blow.”

Instead, what people are witnessing daily, Watkins said, is ongoing death, pain, crimes of desperation and resistance to unlawful practices by law enforcement. All of this is going on in 2010.

“Things are much worse now (than) before the ’65 Rebellion because we’ve got a Black president that somehow suggest that we’ve arrived when nothing could be farther from the truth, because following (Hurricane) Katrina — and on top of poor housing policy, poor school policy — Black folks in America have been scattered to the winds,” Watkins said.

Watkins also said that what also has gotten worse is that many of the economic, educational, health and cultural institutions that grew out of the Watts Rebellion are under assault: The Watts Health Foundation, which began as a nonprofit in 1987 to provide health care services to low-income residents in South Los Angeles, is now a corporation, he said.

Charles R. Drew University is under siege by financial institutions and people who feel it should serve a different interest than what it was founded for.

Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, the crown jewel of Watts, is closed, for the most part, Watkins argued.

The Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center and Southwest College are all struggling, he said.

Watkins said the people of Watts continue to have hope. However, he said the truth is that, in a place that has been neglected and stymied in its growth by environmental pressures waged against it, it needs adequacy to pull itself out of poverty. Instead, elected officials talk about the equitable distribution of resources, he said.

State University of Long Beach and consultant for Stop the Violence Increase the Peace Foundation, said the story told to future generations about the 1965 Watts Rebellion must include the history of institutions.

Those institutions include the Brotherhood Crusade (founded in 1968 to provide funding, programs, and services to the community); The Organization Us (founded in 1965); and the Watts Summer Festival.

The festival began as a celebration in 1966 as a tribute to people who died during the rebellion.

Rah said the commemoration of the festival needs to be kept alive also for scholarly research on the historical significance of the local area, which includes the creation of the Sons of Watts and the Daughters of Watts, the WLCAC, the Watts Community Alert, and other self-help, protecting organizations.

The rebellion also changed policing in the community, said Rah, who was arrested during the rebellion while he was riding in a car with several other men.

After the riots, law enforcement marked the rooftops of homes with numbers to track their areas, began driving with helmets, and began driving with two officers in a police car, he said.

“This all came after the rebellion, not riots,” Rah said. “Black conscious scholars began to call it a rebellion because it was more than some of the spontaneous, episodic behavior, and that’s why it lasted so long. Some viewed it as an opportunity to make a statement.”

He said the term riots diminishes the political and social value that grew out of the rebellion.

“That’s why the European doesn’t mention the (King) hospital,” he said.

“He wants to keep most rebellions as just a spontaneous, episodic behavior, and not as one with any political significance. He can have the Tea Party and Boston Tea activities and put them in political relevancy, but he didn’t want to put the Watts Rebellion in politically empowering terminology, so there’s a fight between White writers and Black conscious scholars of that time to say, ‘No, this was a rebellion, not a riot.’ ” Despite its challenges before the rebellion, Watts managed to be a flourishing community, stated Edna Aliewine, creator of the Watts-Willowbrook Christmas Parade.

She argued that a lot of money and programs were put into Watts after the uprising, but there’s nothing to show for it today.

“I’m real upset with Watts, and I’ve been in Watts since 1925, and I know it as it was,” Aliewine said. “We had stores on 103rd Street, not houses. We had two shoe stores, Carl’s on one side and Kirby’s across the street. We had E.F. Smith Market here, a big Goodwill store, and two theaters. We had everything.”

Civil Rights Vet Continues in Fight For Justice MICHAEL BROWN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Rob Robbins, 71, first heard the details of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070, traveling by bus and braving the heat to march against it wasn’t a farfetched idea if you had a glimpse of his history.

Robbins, a Los Angeles resident, joined more than 500 people in an 11bus caravan to Arizona organized by the L.A. Federation of Labor to march against the immigration law in July. A day before the arrival of the protestors, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton placed an injunction on the law’s more controversial aspects, until a hearing is

held during the week of Nov. 1 at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.

During the caravan’s trek toward Arizona, Robbins talked about how the Southern California contingent began with sweaters and blankets, but once they arrived in Phoenix, they were met by a blistering sun, which led to profuse sweating by all. However, Robbins shared an anecdote on the marchers’ first hours in the “valley of the sun.”

“After we arrived at a Catholic church, the beaming sun started to turn into a light drizzle and when we left-we had an almost picture-perfect mist to march toward the capital in,” he said.

The Arizona protests weren’t Robbins’ first experience as an activist.

Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, Robbins organized during the Civil Rights Movement and challenged draconian laws such as “separate but equal.”

“Once I heard this law explained and looked at it, it reminded me of Alabama during the ’50s,” Robbins said. “Targeting people because of the way they look is not American. I was born in 1939 and I think this is a step backwards. I thought we were done with these kinds of laws being passed.”

People being “targeted” are not the only aspect of SB 1070 that reminds Robbins of 1950s Alabama.

Proponents of SB 1070 insist that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer was correct in signing the law. Supporters cite “states rights,” and charge the federal government with interference.

Robbins said, “The phrase ‘states rights’ is just political cover. They used the same argument when we wanted voting rights and fought discrimination in the south during the movement.

This is about the status quo wanting to maintain what they have. It’s the haves vs. the have-nots.”

“Exploitation is at the heart of the matter here,” he continued. “If they wanted to stop illegal immigration they could, but business offers incentives to attract immigrants. They like cheap labor they can exploit.”

Robbins said some of the highlights of the trip to Arizona were the L.A. group being joined along the route by state residents, who picked up picket signs and chanted with members of organized labor, clergy and immigration rights groups.

“People of good will stood up collectively that day,” he said. “I agree with those who say we have an immigration problem, but SB 1070 isn’t the answer. Either you’re for right or for wrong.”

Robbins’ strong beliefs and convictions were cultivated at an early age. He recalls being involved in the civil rights struggle at the age of 16.

71-year-old L.A. resident, who fought unjust laws in the south, travels to Arizona to protest against immigration law. He discusses beginnings in Tuskegee, Alabama, social justice advocacy and what makes him go.

He then pursued his education at the famed historically black college, Tuskegee Institute (now: Tuskegee University). There, he attended classes for a year until he saw pictures flash across his television screen that changed his life forever.

“I saw people in California at the beach in December,” he said with a chuckle. “I thought to myself, ‘I’m sick of this cold Alabama weather. I’m moving to Los Angeles.’”

Once he made the move to sunny California in 1957, Robbins didn’t leave his organizing and activist roots behind in Alabama. He almost immediately enmeshed himself in Los Angeles politics by volunteering for Augustus “Gus” Hawkins and Kenneth Hahn.

Hawkins, who passed away in 2007, was California’s first AfricanAmerican elected to Congress. The deceased Hahn was and is still revered by residents of South L.A. for his civil rights advocacy. The 40-year member of the L.A. Board of Supervisors made quite an impression on Robbins.

“Both Gus and Kenneth Hahn were men of integrity,” he said. “They stood for dignity for all people. They influenced me tremendously.”

Robbins, a member of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), is a long-term care worker-and

has been with the union for eight of his 10 years in the profession. His first experience in the field involved caring for his first wife, who had a triple bypass surgery. She passed in 2005 after a lengthy battle.

Robbins remarried, but in an ironic twist, he’s currently providing care for his second wife, who is on disability. Robbins said it’s a “divine pleasure” to take care of both women.

When he isn’t working, Robbins is a member and former president of the South Coast Interfaith Council, a mixed denomination of churches that addresses social issues. Becoming a Pentecostal Baptist at 11-years-old inspired Robbins to view the gospel as a tool for social change.

“You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem,” he said. “My organization will remain vocal in opposing Arizona’s law. We can’t fall asleep at the wheel. We need solutions for this problem to be led at the federal level.”

At 71 years old, most would assume that Robbins is ready for retirement, but he hinted that he has other ideas.

“I go to 24 Hour Fitness, never drank or smoked, and I plan on doing a 26-mile bikeathon on Labor Day,” he said.

AboutThatCar.com Nissan Maxima, 4-Door Sports Car

BY FRANK S. WASHINGTON NNPA COLUMNIST DETROIT (NNPA) — It had been a while so I asked the folks at Nissan to let me test drive its flagship sedan, the Maxima.

The bottom line is that I should have asked sooner, a lot sooner. The Maxima has slowly morphed into a stylish, sporty, sizable sedan with a coupe like silhouette. Nissan bills the Maxima as a 4-door sports car.

In a word, the Maxima looked “good.” Several times during my week-long test drive people commented on its stylishness. Nissan calls the Maxima’s exterior styling liquid motion. With that cue, the car did have sort of a wave styling that flowed from a slightly bulging hood, to its sloping roofline and onto the trunk.

Both head and tail lights wrapped around into the front and rear fender quarters. My test car had 19inch wheels, Xenon headlights, a rear spoiler and a sport tuned suspension, all a part of its $2,000 sport package.

Although my test Maxima was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that made

290 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque, I was more impressed with its continuously variable transmission (CVT).

One generally does not associate CVT’s with performance. As a matter of fact, Nissan is one of the few companies that has almost completely committed to CVTs, Nissan Z car does not have one.

CVT’s have no gears, thus they have fewer moving parts, that means they are less expensive to produce, more fuel efficient and they are just about problem free. The down side is that they can be noisy, seem sluggish and because there are no gears many drivers are disconcerted by CVT’s seemingly unending whine.

It’s such a concern that some automakers make their CVT’s seemingly shift gears, as did the Maxima.

My test car even had paddle shifters which indeed functioned like the car was shifting gears, although it couldn’t because it didn’t have any forward gears.

Still, it worked and I pretty much forgot that my 2010 Maxima had a CVT rather than a standard gearbox.

The car accelerated with authority,

Nissan Maxima, 4-Door Sports Car handled more like a sports car than a sedan and there was a balance between its firm sport suspension and a comfortable ride.

My only quibble was there was no lane change signal. I had to alert drivers that I was changing lanes the old fashioned way, engage the turn signal. In a driver’s car that can really be a distraction.

I was stunned when I checked the information system and found that my Nissan Maxima had averaged 22.8 mpg for the 182.6 miles that I had driven up to that point and it still had a range of 192 miles to empty. In small print, Nissan reported that the Maxima’s fuel efficiency in the city was from 15 to 23 mpg and 21 to 31mpg on the hwy depending on driv-

ing habits. My week-long test drive test drive certainly fell within that range.

The Maxima was a sizable sedan which made the interior quite comfortable and spacious. There was plenty of room in the front seats as well as the rear. The interior was all black and the centerstack template was made to look like black mated graphite. It had a sophisticated feel.

My test car was well equipped.

Creature comforts included a backup camera, heated steering wheel and heated front seats, satellite radio with traffic and weather reports,

Bluetooth, a navigation system and rear bucket seats.

The audio system included an in dash CD changer with MP3/WMA capability, two subwoofers and a center channel speaker. The car also had DVD playback capability. It was a nice package.

The base price was $33,180. But even with options and freight, my test car still cost less than $40,000. It was $38,660. That wasn’t bad for the performance and the equipment that the 2010 Nissan Maxima SV contained.

Changing the Status Quo in Our Schools

BY MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN NNPA COLUMNIST (NNPA) — In late July, both President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan spoke to the National Urban League’s Centennial Conference about what the President called “an issue that I believe will largely determine not only African American success, but the success of our nation in the 21st century — and that is whether we are offering our children the very best education possible.”

Right now, of course, the answer is no so President Obama and Secretary Duncan were there to speak about the administration’s plans for education reform.

American education, which used to be the envy of the world, is in dire straits. The United States ranks 21st among 25 developed countries on overall educational achievement for 15-yearolds. Many public school students are struggling; minority children and poor children are struggling most. Too often they fall behind in school and drop out, increasing their risk of entering the cradle to prison pipeline. Staying in school and receiving a quality education are the best deterrents to juvenile delinquency and the surest route towards responsible, productive adulthood.

But 46 percent of Black high school students, 39 percent of Hispanic, and 11 percent of White students attend the 2,000 “dropout factories” across our country, where less than 60 percent of the freshman class will graduate in four years with a regular diploma. The United States spends almost three times as much per prisoner as per public school pupil every year. When it comes to preparing our children to compete and succeed in a rapidly globalizing world, we are falling behind.

As President Obama said, “I know some argue that as we emerge from a recession, my administration should focus solely on economic issues. But education is an economic issue — if not ‘the’ economic issue of our time. It’s an economic issue when the unemployment rate for folks who’ve never gone to college is

almost double what it is for those who have gone to college. It’s an economic issue when eight in 10 new jobs will require workforce training or a higher education by the end of this decade. It’s an economic issue when countries that out-educate us today are going to out-compete us tomorrow.”

President Obama continued, “Now, for years, we’ve recognized that education is a prerequisite for prosperity. And yet, we’ve tolerated a status quo where America lags behind other nations. Just last week, we learned that in a single generation, America went from number one to 12th in college completion rates for young adults. (We) used to be number one, now we’re number 12.

At the same time, our 8th graders trail about eight (to) 10 other nations in science and math. Meanwhile, when it comes to black students, African American students trail not only almost every other developed nation abroad, but they badly trail their white classmates here at home — an achievement gap that is widening the income gap between black and white, between rich and poor.

We’ve talked about it, we know about it, but we haven’t done enough about it. And this status quo is morally inexcusable, it is economically indefensible, and all of us are going to have to roll up our sleeves to change it.”

Secretary Duncan explained that the Department of Education is creating an Equity and Excellence Commission to address the critical problem of fiscal inequities in K-12 schools and how these inequities lead to the achievement gap. He also made similar observations about the need to change the current status quo as he spoke about the reform measures the Administration is putting into place as part of the Race to the Top initiative. He correctly argues that they are bold and ambitious, as they need to be: “Our children are at risk. Their future — and ours — is at risk. We must prepare them to compete in a global economy, and that requires all of us to move outside of our comfort zones. We have to challenge the status quo, because the status quo in public education is not nearly good enough — not with a quarter of all students and, almost half, 50 percent of African American and Latino young men and women dropping out of high school. How many good jobs are out there today for high school dropouts? What chance do they have to build positive futures? Our nation's young people deserve dramatically better than we are giving them today — they deserve a real chance in life. This issue is even bigger than education — it is an issue of social justice and economic security. We have a moral obligation to change these outcomes and it won't happen unless we start doing things differently. Not just talking about it, but actually doing it.”

The president and secretary are absolutely right on that the current state of American education is “morally inexcusable” and “economically indefensible” — and that the time is now for our nation to stop talking about doing things differently, and actually do it. Millions of child lives are at stake. It’s time for every parent, educator, community and political leader to put children first.

In Search of

Synchronicity

BY JULIANNE MALVEAUX NNPA COLUMNIST (NNPA) — I haven’t seen the movie, Eat Pray Love. I just read the book. After I read it I put it on a friend’s desk and asked if she’d get more from it than I did. The book is a travelogue of Italy, India and Indonesia, and Elizabeth Gilbert’s romp through the three countries in such a way as to find herself after her marriage went bad.

To be sure, there were moments of mmm, and moments of aaaugh, and moments when I absolutely empathized with Elizabeth Gilbert. And there were moments when I reminded myself that 15 million American don’t have work, and that half of those haven’t had work for half a year.

They aren’t running around the world finding themselves and having Julia Roberts play them in the reality show.

They are simply searching for survival.

Synchronicity.

Alignment. They ways that all of our stuff makes sense.

It doesn’t make sense to write a book or watch a film about this search for self even as so many search for survival. Last week, unemployment rates were again released and we learned that, at 9.5 percent, our country’s ability to employ has not improved. More importantly, the unemployment rate for African Americans exceeds 16 percent, and that, too, is something that somehow coexists with this fabulous movie romp through self-discovery. I’m not annoyed (too much) at Elizabeth Gilbert or Julia Roberts, though they ought to break off a little piece of their profits for those who can’t romp as wildly as they do. I am concerned that the timing of the release of their movie has a bit of smug selfsatisfaction to it. Will I go see it?

Possibly. Without seeing it, but with reading the book, the entire enterprise strikes me as discordant, absent synchronicity.

So if I am mad at Liz and Julia,

what about Michelle Obama, our stunning First Lady who took herself to Spain a week or so ago. The pundits say that she was wrong and out of touch and tone deaf to our nation’s economic crisis. One of her

Julianne Malveaux best translators, Liz sweet from the Chicago Times says that the vacation was a way of allowing First Lady Obama to connect with friends who’d lost a parent. I say if I have to do discordance, I’ll accept the First Lady’s. Don’t get me wrong. If I were making up a white house schedule, I would have passed on the Spain trip. At the same time, who knows what happens in that house and how the First Mom decides to parse her time. I want to give her hugs, not criticism, for all the work she does, and for all the work she really could do but is not allowed to. The Spain trip is not an Eat Pray Love thing, not even slightly. And the tone and tenor of some of the objections to Mrs. Obama’s trip frankly reek of racial resentment.

When she grew into herself she burned it. She died this week, a

woman whose fierce voice searched for synchronicity, for authenticity, for that which is real. She died on August 14, a voice until her waning years, an inspiration even at the invocation of her name. Abbey Lincoln was described by some fool critic as a “professional Negro” as if there is something wrong with that.

The description came after she used her voice and raised her voice to speak of freedom. Imagine this w o m a n , transforming herself form a Marilyn Monroe imit a t i n g ingénue into a tool and an instrument for peace and justice. She, too, was searching for synchronicity, for alignment. One might argue that she found it and embraced it, embracing it for all of us.

I had the phenomenal pleasure of hearing Abbey Lincoln sing a bunch of times, but most recently when she graced an Indianapolis state in the mid-1990s.

I was the guest of a woman whose organization had engaged me to speak, and she was rather insistent that I enjoy Ms. Lincoln’s performance. Beyond enjoying it, the moment took my breath away. I can clearly remember her wrapping herself around a microphone to sing, “The world is falling down, hold my hand”. Powerful.

We do not need to hit three continents to find the synchronicity that is necessary. All we need to do is to remember who we are and whose we are. I wish Abbey Lincoln on Elizabeth Gilbert. I wish Abbey Lincoln, born Anna Maria Woolridge, on each and every one of us.

The Terrible Case of Mitrice Richardson For the past year, I have lived with the terrible case of Mitrice Richardson, whose remains were found last week in a Malibu canyon.

The surface circumstances about the case are now well known.

Richardson, the 24-year-old African-American woman, with emotional challenges, was held and then released alone from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lost Hills/Malibu station in the early morning hours of Sept. 17, 2009.

She then disappeared. Her disappearance touched a national nerve. It ignited loud and anguished pleas Earl Ofari Hutchinson from her parents, friends and thousands of concerned citizens. There were also searches of the area where sheriff’s deputies last saw her and teams of volunteers, and countless reports of Richardson sightings in Los Angeles and various other cities. People Magazine also had a cover photo of her.

Richardson’s mother, Latice Sutton, appeared twice on my radio shows asking for the public’s help in finding her daughter. But that wasn’t enough.

Sutton then asked for my help in formally appealing to Attorney General Eric Holder to direct the FBI to enter the investigation. This was a more than reasonable request since Richardson’s disappearance had by then generated national publicity and outrage.

There was great concern that she may have been the victim of foul play that may have involved the crossing of state lines. This made her disappearance and possible death a federal matter.

We knew that Richardson was by no means an aberration. More than 800,000 missing persons cases are on file with the FBI. Most of those are children. However, nearly 29,000 of them are adults and juveniles who are “missing under circumstances indicating that the disappearance was not voluntary; i.e., abduction or kidnapping.”

This made the case even more compelling. Sutton and I jointly made the request in November 2009 for Justice Department involvement.

The response was the typical a bureaucrat’s duck-and-dodge. The FBI said it was sympathetic to the plight of Richardson and her family, and would keep a close watch on developments. There was no commitment to investigate, and no promise of a follow up.

This was a double blow. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department had vehemently disclaimed any responsibility for Richardson’s disappearance.

It exonerated itself in a lengthy report, which insisted it followed proper rules and procedures. This Pontius Pilate hand wash came on the heels of the Justice Department’s refusal to take action.

But now with Richardson’s death, the questions are even more troubling. Why was she released alone? How did she die?

When and how did she die? Were others involved in her disappearance and death? What and how did the sheriff’s department, with the renewed call for the FBI to get involved in the case, handle the investigation into her disappearance and death?

The FBI and sheriff’s department’s response to the Richardson case again raised ugly questions regarding how diligently officials investigate the deaths or disappearance of African Americans, and whether the press reports their murders or disappearances with the same intensity as white victims, especially when the victims are young black females.

The charge by Richardson’s family and local civil rights leaders that the police are insensitive to the disappearance and possible murder of African Americans such as Richardson is not new.

enforcement and judges impose a hard racial double standard when the victim is a young African American, whether a missing person such as Richardson, or a murder victim, as Richardson may well turn out to be.

Whatever the case, the implicit message is that black lives are expendable.

Police officials and judges vehemently deny that they are any less diligent in prosecuting the kidnapping or murder of blacks, or that they expend less time tracking down leads and mounting a full-court investigation in the case of a missing person who is African American.

The tipping point is the willingness of the victim’s family and friends to go public and keep pressure on authorities to take the murder or disappearance seriously.

Richardson’s family put constant public pressure on the sheriff’s department to pursue every lead and possibility in trying to find Richardson.

This made the media take note, especially mindful of the popularly dubbed “missing-white-woman syndrome.”

That is to deluge the public with story after story on missing white women such as Jennifer Wilbanks, Chelsea King, Susan Powell, and Natalee Holloway. Richardson’s family demanded the same headline treatment news for Mitrice.

But what if the Richardson family and friends hadn’t turned Mitrice into a cause célèbre in the media and law enforcement?

If not, we’ll never know whether she would have been less than a bare footnote in the news. Fortunately, this was not the not the case.
