Welcome to the 2009/10 Kirklees Concert Season. Our commitment to providing the finest range of classical concerts for Kirklees is reaffirmed this season with a total of 35 concerts across the orchestral, organ and lunchtime chamber series, which include some of the best-loved music in the repertoire. At the heart of the season is our resident ensemble, the Orchestra of Opera North; in addition to performing eight concerts in the season, a number of its players also feature in the organ and chamber series. We continue to engage conductors and soloists of international standing whilst maintaining our commitment to developing the talents of the next generation of artists, and our association with the region’s great orchestras remains strong, with the BBC Philharmonic, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Northern Sinfonia all appearing. Building new audiences and links to local groups remains important to the future of our work, and with our education programme Play ON we will once again be resident in a Kirklees high school during the coming season. Key to the success of the season is our loyal and supportive audience, so we’re delighted that many of the faces in this year's brochure are those of people who attend our concerts, emphasising the vital importance of the warm relationship between performers and audiences that is so characteristic of the Kirklees Concert Season. At these times when the future can feel uncertain, the capacity of music to inspire and uplift us has never been more valuable. We hope that there’s something in the programme for every taste: do bring your friends - we’re sure neither you nor they will be disappointed! Fantastic Symphony

Three popular works to open the season, in a concert featuring two rising young British artists together with our resident orchestra. All three works were written when the composers were in their twenties and have a youthful freshness about them. The evening’s main work, Brahms’s hugely enjoyable First Serenade, will ensure an uplifting launch to the year.

An adrenaline-charged start to the season in Huddersfield, with two works by passionate young men. From the stormy orchestral outburst of the opening, to the beautiful slow movement – a portrait of Clara Schumann, with whom Brahms had fallen in love – the great German composer bares his soul in his First Piano Concerto. Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, which famously portrays ‘episodes in the life of an artist’, is one of those works that simply has to be experienced live to appreciate fully its revolutionary impact!

Two great Kirklees favourites, Elgar Howarth and Ian Buckle, join the Orchestra of Opera North in a virtuosic programme by three composers who all, in their own very individual ways, extended the horizons of orchestral music. From the vibrant colours of Britten and Ravel, to the sweeping sounds of symphonic Sibelius, this is music to exploit to the maximum the famed Dewsbury acoustic!

There is something very special about the partnership between Imogen Cooper and the Northern Sinfonia, and their ongoing series of Mozart concerto recordings has received excellent reviews. Come and hear them perform these two wondrous concertos live prior to the release of their performances on disc – you’ll hear it here first!

Classic FM is the UK’s most popular commercial radio station. The heart of its philosophy is the idea that classical music can and should be part of everyone’s life – and that’s a belief we share. 2007’s Classic FM concert sold out very quickly, so book early for this wonderful programme compèred by a well-known Classic FM presenter.

Definitely a highlight of the season for many, so do remember to book early for our everpopular afternoon of Viennese classics. Jupiter and the Sky at Night

Arguably the finest of Russian ballet scores, inarguably the most popular! The Nutcracker contains some of the most famous music of all time, so join us and revel in classics such as the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers. Solo performances by David Greed, Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, are always something special, so his performance of Britten’s Violin Concerto is bound to be one of the events of the season. Martin André, who had such a hit with Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet in 2006, conducts.

The opening chords of Sibelius’ Pelléas et Mélisande, which became so well known as the introductory music to The Sky at Night, conjure a sound world that evokes perfectly the melancholy Maeterlinck story. Leeds Conductors Competition winner Garry Walker returns alongside Guy Johnston, one of the most prodigiously talented cellists of his generation, in one of the two greatest 19th century concertos for the instrument; and Mozart’s final symphony, one of the wonders of the world, rounds off an exceptionally strong programme.

Schumann’s four symphonies are the most original essays in the form to be composed after Beethoven’s, as his fourth and final symphony amply demonstrates. We are delighted that the BBC Philharmonic has become such an established part of the season in recent years, and the orchestra is sure to thrill in a programme that also includes Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Fantasy Overture and a glorious violin concerto from mid-20th century Hollywood’s composer of choice.

We have become used to welcoming Paul Watkins to Huddersfield in his role as conductor, but this year he returns to his roots to perform the Elgar Cello Concerto. If you saw his performance of this work televised live from the First Night of the Proms two years ago, you’ll know what a profoundly moving experience is his interpretation of this work. In the second half, the First Symphony of William Walton, a composer with strong links to Huddersfield; it’s a work brimming with rhythmic energy and drive.

The Planets

An epic ending

Holst’s The Planets is one of those popular works that, however familiar one may be with them from recordings, seem always to yield fresh wonders when experienced live. In this concert we celebrate the talent of the next generation, with prize winners from the Leeds Piano and Conducting Competitions, and in The Planets we are delighted to be joined by students from the University of Huddersfield.

We reach the climax of the season with a truly epic programme conducted by Opera North Music Director, Richard Farnes. Shostakovich’s monumental Tenth Symphony is emotionally intense – the work of a composer who had to live and work under a terrible dictatorship. Yet it also expresses hope that it may indeed be possible to build a better world for the future. It’s a fine note on which to conclude the season and look forward to next year...

Robin Hill

Voces8 has established itself as one of the UK’s most successful a cappella singing groups. With concerts this year throughout Europe, the United States and Africa, they find time to come to Dewsbury to open the season. Beautiful singing and great fun are promised.

Robin’s concerts at the Town Hall have been so popular that we felt that we just had to have him back! Since his last visit he has been playing concerts all over the world and has just returned from a trip which took him from Florida to Singapore. His third Dewsbury programme includes classic guitar music by Villa-Lobos and Albeniz.

George King George King is one of the UK’s most exciting pianists. Earlier this year he made his American début at the Carnegie Hall in New York, and he brings to Dewsbury a wonderful programme including Chopin’s Revolutionary study, Gershwin’s Three Preludes and Liszt’s massive Mephisto Waltz No 1. He is also well-known as a composer and improviser so the programme will include his own improvisation on Gershwin’s I got rhythm. 9 December 2009

University of Huddersfield Brass Band The University Brass Band’s concert is one of the most popular in the Dewsbury series. Here they are again with a brand new programme under their inspiring conductor, Philip McCann.

Rachel Mosley and Paul Gibson with Michael Cleaver Soprano Rachel Mosley and baritone Paul Gibson are joined by Dewsbury regular Michael Cleaver in a programme of songs and duets on the theme of love for just a few days before Valentine’s Day. Music from Purcell to Gershwin, some of it very beautiful and some of it just great fun!

Associate Leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, Andrew Long, teams up again with long-time favourite pianist John Wilson for their first performance together in Dewsbury. They will be performing Elgar’s beautiful violin sonata before taking us on a whistle-stop tour of Spain with Manuel de Falla’s Suite of Spanish Dances. Their programme ends with a set of salon favourites by Kreisler. 12 May 2010

The New World Quartet Several audience members have asked for a concert of string quartets, and here is one of the country’s busiest quartets in a programme including Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet and Dvorˇák’s American Quartet. The perfect end to our exciting chamber series.

Kevin Gowland is Principal Flute in the Orchestra of Opera North. For this, his second Dewsbury lunchtime concert, he is joined by pianist Annette Saunders in a programme which includes music by Handel and Hamilton Harty, and ends with François Borne’s spectacular Fantasy Brillante on themes from Carmen. Kevin’s last concert at the Town Hall was one of the highlights of 2006 – this is a concert not to be missed.

Travel and parking – Huddersfield Town Hall is located within walking distance of the town’s rail and bus stations. See map for locations of car parks, plus there is also limited free parking on the streets around the Town Hall from 6pm. Entrances – The Box Office is situated on Corporation Street and is open from 6.15pm on the evening of each concert for collection of prebooked tickets and ’on the door’ sales. Access to the Area Foyer and Old Court Room is also from Corporation Street. The main Princess Street entrance also opens at 6.15pm. Talking music – For an extra insight into the music and an opportunity to meet some of the performers, there is a free talk before the concerts at 6.40pm (unless otherwise stated) in the main hall. Please ensure that you purchase your ticket before going into the hall. Induction Loop System – The Concert Hall has an induction loop system for hearing-impaired patrons. Wheelchair Access – A number of wheelchair positions are available in the Area only. Access is via the Area Foyer (Corporation Street) with a lift to the concert hall. A steward will be available to assist you. Please make it clear when booking that you require a wheelchair space. Wheelchair spaces are sold at the concessionary rate; one accompanying carer may claim a free seat. Refreshments – Bar and catering facilities are available from 6.15pm. Cheques are payable to ’Kirklees Council’. Reservations – If you make a reservation at the Town Hall it must be claimed no later than 15 minutes prior to the performance, otherwise it will be released for sale. Please ensure that you bring your ticket with you to the concert as proof of purchase.
