Romantics and Revolutionaries is our theme this year, one that could hardly be more appropriate in these turbulent times. There will be plenty of reminders during the course of the season of how times of momentous change can often be a spur to the creation of great, visionary art: one need only think of Beethoven for proof of that. Both romantic and revolutionary, he is at the heart of our orchestral season: and in planning the year, we have drawn inspiration from his spirit. As well as launching a complete cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies and his major concertos this year – a project that spans this season and next – we include works by some of music’s greatest innovators: composers from Bach to Stravinsky who took risks and broke the mould. Passionate performance of inspirational music characterises the Kirklees season, creating a special, very direct line of communication between players and audiences. This excitement for music is a philosophy we share with Classic FM, Britain’s most successful commercial radio station. So, in an exciting new departure for us all, the Orchestra of Opera North becomes Classic FM’s Orchestra in Yorkshire from 2010. Our resident Orchestra thus joins the other Classic FM orchestras who are our regular guests in the season: the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Northern Sinfonia. Together with Classic FM, we have selected four concerts that we think make ideal introductions to the power and variety of great classical music. If you’ve never tried one before, these ‘Classic FM recommends’ concerts are the perfect place to start; if you come already, how about bringing your friends? Completing our showcase of the great northern orchestras, we are also pleased to welcome the superb musicians of the BBC Philharmonic to Kirklees and, for the first time in several years, the Hallé. The organ and lunchtime chamber concerts continue to thrive, and there is a wealth of wonderful music-making to be enjoyed in both series again this year. The popular Dewsbury lunchtime series will open in style with Voces8, recognised as Britain’s most exciting young vocal ensemble. The first of this season’s organ concerts also marks a very special occasion: Gordon Stewart’s 20th anniversary as Kirklees Borough Organist. Come along and join in the celebrations - you’ll be very welcome. We do hope you’ll join us as often as possible in the year ahead for more world-class music-making on your doorstep. Our complete survey of the Beethoven symphonies is launched with the most famous opening phrase in all music. From a terse, four-note tag – ‘Fate knocking at the door’ as the composer described it – Beethoven develops a musical drama that culminates in an overwhelming blaze of glory. Nothing like this had been heard before, and its influence can be clearly felt in Tchaikovsky’s first and best-known piano concerto. At the helm is one of this country’s most daring interpreters of this repertoire, Douglas Boyd. Berlioz

With Dewsbury Town Hall closed for renovation we have programmed a very special concert in the beautiful and historic surroundings of Dewsbury Minster. This is a programme designed to show the ensemble talent of the Orchestra of Opera North to best advantage. Dvorˇák’s two Serenades are infused with a wonderful Slavic spirit of romance, and Bach (surely as revolutionary as any composer), is represented with his ever popular Suite No.2, featuring Opera North’s Principal Flute Kevin Gowland. The evening is directed by the Orchestra’s leader, David Greed.

High octane virtuosity is in prospect in a programme by three Russian composers all famed for the colour and brilliance of their orchestral writing. It is easy these days to forget just how revolutionary Stravinsky was a century ago; even now the boldness of his great ballet scores thrills and amazes when heard live. One of this country’s greatest and most experienced pianists returns to the season in Prokofiev’s finest concerto and international star Dmitri Jurowski makes his début with the Orchestra.

Sunday afternoon concerts in Huddersfield have proved hugely popular and we’ve reserved this one for a very special occasion. The enormously distinguished Austrian maestro, Dietfried Bernet, conducts a programme that combines heroic power with Viennese charm. Beethoven dedicated his third symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte, but when he learned that Napoleon had declared himself emperor, he scratched out the original dedication and altered it to ‘the memory of a great man’ – far more appropriate given this revolutionary music’s universal appeal.
A delightful programme designed to celebrate our return to Dewsbury Town Hall following its renovation. Grieg’s Holberg Suite is an ideal prelude to two of Mozart’s most popular works. Arch Romantic though he was, Tchaikovsky was a great admirer of Mozart’s music, and his ‘Memory of Florence’ makes for a delicious finale to the evening. This is repertoire in which the virtuoso musicians of the Northern Sinfonia excel, so an evening of pure enjoyment is on the cards.

This week is a landmark in our Beethovenian journey. On consecutive evenings, one in Huddersfield and the other in Dewsbury, Howard Shelley will conduct two of Beethoven’s symphonies and direct from the keyboard three of his piano concertos – an epic undertaking. Later in the year, soloist and orchestra will record a complete cycle of the Beethoven piano concertos for Chandos Records. Make sure you hear it here first!
‘A superb musician: not only does he play with great taste and insight but his conducting is impeccable…’. BBC Music Magazine on Howard Shelley. In his grand C major concerto and the stormy C minor, we encounter Beethoven the evolutionary – displaying an obvious debt to Mozart’s great sequence of mature piano concertos whilst creating something distinctively his own. Beethoven’s fourth symphony may be a little less well-known than the two composed on either side of it, but in its own way it’s just as wondrous.

Northern Sinfonia Classic FM Concert
Brahms was widely regarded in the 19th century as the natural inheritor of Beethoven’s legacy, so this is a fascinating opportunity to compare and contrast his only violin concerto with Beethoven’s, which opened the season. Mozart can be claimed as both Classical and Romantic; his emotionally-charged G minor symphony certainly leans towards the Romantic. The BBC Philharmonic’s Principal Conductor Gianandrea Noseda is acclaimed for the electricity of his performances, so we’re delighted to welcome him to Huddersfield for this concert.
The Northern Sinfonia’s final visit of the season features a popular programme from their Classic FM series of concerts. This is music designed to be enjoyed by all ages and experiences and bears out a philosophy that we share with Classic FM, namely that classical music can, and should be part of people’s everyday life. The concert ends with one of the most darkly romantic symphonies of them all – Schubert’s groundbreaking ‘Unfinished’.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s performances with their sensational young Russian principal conductor have been one of the success stories of the decade in British orchestral life, and Vasily Petrenko has certainly proved a favourite of Kirklees audiences. As well as exploring the connections between Tchaikovsky and Mozart, the programme also includes Prokofiev's youthful and effervescent first piano concerto - the work which heralded the arrival of this musical genius exactly one hundred years ago.
We are delighted to welcome the Hallé back to Kirklees for the season finale. The programme pays tribute to both the Hallé’s and Kirklees’ association with the great English composers of the last century; indeed the Hallé gave the première of ‘In the South’ conducted by the composer in 1904. Combined with the sparkle and romance of Rachmaninov and the special sound world of Sibelius, this is sure to be a wonderful climax to our year and will, we hope, send you away eager to return next Autumn!

15 December 2010 The University of Huddersfield Brass Band For many of the audience the Huddersfield University Brass Band’s concert marks the start of Christmas! Here the Band are back with a new programme, under the direction of their charismatic conductor, Philip McCann.
9 February 2011 Robin Hill (guitar) Since his last visit Robin has been performing in such far flung destinations as Hong Kong, Bombay, Dubai, Maldives, Egypt and Brazil. In his Dewsbury concert he will be performing pieces by Rodrigo, Sor, Bach and of course, Hill.

Induction Loop System Both Town Halls have induction loops in the Concert Halls. Wheelchair Access A number of wheelchair positions are available in the Stalls only. Access is via the level access Corporation Street entrance at Huddersfield and the level access entrance at Dewsbury. A steward will be available to assist you. Please make it clear when booking that you require a wheelchair space. Wheelchair spaces are sold at the concessionary rate; one accompanying carer may claim a free seat. Refreshments Bar and catering facilities are available from 6.15pm. You may pre-order your interval drinks at the bars and beat the rush!

Change of location Due to the refurbishment of Dewsbury Town Hall, the following concerts have had to be relocated. Wednesday 13 October, 1pm – Voces 8 Wednesday 10 November, 1pm – Tom Osborne with Dr Gordon Stewart Both concerts relocated to The United Reform Church, Longcauseway, Dewsbury, WF13 1NH Thursday 25 November, 7.30pm – Orchestra of Opera North relocated to Dewsbury Minster, Rishworth Road, Dewsbury WF12 8DD All concerts will return to the Town Hall in December.
Single tickets for all concerts go on sale from Monday 2 August 2010.
