Why ‘Vandals’? Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s definition of a Vandal. Idaho’s studentathletes earned the nickname nearly a century ago by a basketball team coached by Idaho legend Hec Edmundson, whose teams played with such ferocity that area sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the Argonaut, the student newspaper, wrote in a pre-game story, “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever carried the ‘I’ into action.” By 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have the name officially adopted as the nickname for all Idaho teams.

2010 Season Preview

2010 Season Preview

The University of Idaho women’s soccer team enters the 2010 season with high hopes after putting together the nation’s second-best win improvement in 2009. The Vandals improved by eight wins to 9-10-0 last year and return eight starters and 17 letter winners from that squad. With a young, talented core returning and a touted group of newcomers in the program, head coach Pete Showler hopes the 2010 Vandals can break through in the Western Athletic Conference. Idaho was picked to finish seventh in a preseason vote by the league’s coaches, while sophomore Chelsea Small, who was a first-team all-WAC and WAC Freshman of the Year selection in 2009, was named to the preseason all-WAC team. The Vandals return both starting forwards, Small and senior Jenn Hull, as well as starting midfielders Megan Lopez, Amber Pimley and Jill Flockhart, starting defenders Christine Leathem and Lauren Layton and starting goalkeeper Liz Boyden.

Forwards

The Small/Hull duo was a big reason why Idaho broke the school record for shots in 2009 and scored its most goals since 2001. Small netted eight, while Hull hit four and the pair also had six assists between them. Small’s 20 points tied and Idaho freshman record last season, while Hull’s 12 career goals and 29 career points each rank fourth all-time at Idaho. With another full year to build chemistry, the two will try to up the stakes even more in their second season together on the front line. Small and Hull will get help from sophomore Kristi Wirtz, who came on with solid minutes late in the 2009 season, and freshman Kelsey Corney, a scoring machine from Bend, Ore., who netted 58 goals in her final three seasons at Bend High School. Showler expects both Wirtz and Corney to be immediate front-line contributors in 2010.

Midfielders

Strong midfield play is the key to any team’s success, and Showler likes what he sees from Idaho’s young middies. Center mids Megan Lopez and Amber Pimley showed toughness and savvy as freshmen last year. Lopez assisted three goals and attempted 28 shots last season. Her nifty footwork and strong passing game helped Idaho maintain possession and work into the offensive zone. Pimley is a tough tackler who works well with the back line to erase opponent scoring chances and get the ball through to the forwards. Outside midfielder Jill Flockhart gave opponents headaches with her speed last season. She tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals and four total scores on just 17 shots in 2009. There will be plenty of pressure for the fourth starting midfield position between returners Mel Canite, Erica Hart, Cassandra San, Kristi Atkinson

2010 Vandal Soccer and Jennifer Eugenio, as well as freshmen Christina Boddie and Breanna Wilson. Regardless of who ends up in the starting spot, Showler expects all to see significant time on the pitch. Canite, San, Eugenio and Hart all played in at least 13 games last season, while Boddie and Wilson inject another strong dose of speed into the midfield.

Defenders

Idaho lost two 2009 starters from its back line, which limited opponents to just 251 shot attempts – the second-fewest in school history – but also returns two strong players who each saw a majority of time. Sophomore Lauren Layton started all 19 games on the back line and did doubleduty as the team’s designated corner kicker – a responsibility that earned her four assists in 2009. Fellow sophomore Christine Leathem started 18 games last season after conceding the Senior Day start to Lydia Beyerlein, but saw extensive minutes in every match. Leathem is a strong center back who routinely scratched out opponents’ scoring chances.

Goalkeepers

Idaho lost an experience goalkeeper to graduation last season, but the good news is that Liz Boyden, who has 31 career starts and five shutouts to her name, returns for her junior season in front of the net. Boyden showed marked improvement in her second season last year in compiling a 1.20 goals-allowed average and tallying three blank slates. Boyden’s career 1.40 GAA is the lowest in Idaho history among keepers with at least 2500 minutes in the net. Backing up Boyden will be sophomore Caroline Towles, who showed her potential with significant minutes during spring soccer. Towles is an athletic keeper who used her 2009 freshman season to add some polish to her game. Showler expects her to continue building her skills in year two and push Boyden for time in the net. The Idaho women took a huge step forward with an eight-win improvement and big statistical jumps in 2009. With a hefty portion of that core returning for 2010, there’s no reason to believe that the Vandals can’t make another significant move forward. The 2009 team was impressive in its nine wins, but nine of the team’s 10 losses came by a single goal. Showler hopes that the experience of those situations will help the team come out on top more often in those tight situations. Idaho plays 14 games on the road and six games at home in 2010. Their first home match will be played Sept. 17 against Gonzaga. The team closes out the season by playing four of its last seven at Guy Wicks Field.

2010 Season Preview

With two open spots on the back line, the competition appears to be wide open. Hart, who also will spend time in the midfield, is an option at outside back, while freshmen Chelsie Breen, Mary Condon and Nitalia Zuniga will also have ample opportunities to slide into the starting 11. All three come from stalwart high school and club programs and should challenge for open spots and push returners for time on field.

The Vandals accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference in June 2004 and the 2005 season marked Idaho’s first season with the conference as an all-sports member. The WAC features nine schools, including Idaho, Boise State, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Utah State, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Nevada and Louisiana Tech. The 2010 season marks the WAC’s 49th year of existence, which makes it the sixth-oldest conference in all of college sports. The WAC is also one of the most diverse conferences with schools in California, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Louisiana and Hawai’i. Before July 1, 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Presently the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 18 sports – eight men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. San Jose State claimed the 2009 the regularseason title last season. Third-seeded Boise State Contact Information beat fourth-seeded Nevada by a 1-0 score and 9250 E. Moscow, 83843 More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho. Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover. Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America. The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent. For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out. Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town. If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found. At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

State of Idaho When someone says “Idaho” what comes to mind? Potatoes? Or Napoleon Dynamite? There’s a lot more to Idaho. Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State. Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers: • Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. –

• The world famous Lava Hot Springs

8,000 feet deep at some points.

• The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho

• Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls)

• Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play

• Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser)

• Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest

• The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho

• Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America

Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille. Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The staterun agency’s responsibilities include researching and expanding the Idaho potato market.

Moscow/Idaho

Moscow is:

• One of the top 100 Small Arts Towns • Host of the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival • Largest of the 27 Moscows in the United States • A U.S. Small Arts Center • An Idaho “Gem Community”

Student-Athlete Services With the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes. “We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.” Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Student-Athlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditorium-style meeting room were also added. After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.

Director of Student-Athlete Services/ Head Athletic Trainer Barrie Steele Barrie Steele has been the head athletic trainer at Idaho since 1986. He oversees a full staff of certified athletic trainers and works hand-in-hand with Idaho’s team physicians: Dr. Steve Pennington, Dr. David Rych and Dr. Ed Tingstad.

Athletic Training Philosophy Statement:

The purpose of the athletic training room and staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training room and the services provided therein.

2010 Vandal Soccer Iverson Strength & Conditioning Center

31

The University of Idaho’s commitment to its student-athletes can be seen in the continuing enhancement and growth of its athletic training, and strength and conditioning services – the most notable the Norman and Becky Iverson Strength and Conditioning Center. The $3.3 million center was dedicated on April 30, 2004. “The Vandal Athletic Center is a huge bonus for our players,” Idaho soccer coach Pete Showler said. “The facility is second to none. That, combined with the experience of the Vandal Strength and Conditioning staff, gives us a great head start before we even step on the pitch. The players can work on improving stamina, power, flexibility, and core areas, as well as improving speed and agility; all key areas for our game.” The floor-to-ceiling glass that fronts the building and extends down the sides provides a spacious view of UI’s main campus. Inside, the Center is equipped with a full complement of strength-training equipment. As much as it has everything a student-athlete needs to remain in top condition, it has the best in rehabilitation equipment. Among the most notable is a hydrotherapy pool, which features a floor that can be raised and lowered depending on the need at the time. The 8,000 square foot facility was opened for student-athlete use on March 19, 2004. It is approximately three times as large as the previous training facility and includes a 7,000 square foot first floor used for day-to-day strength and conditioning needs. It also includes a 1,000 square foot mezzanine level filled with cardiovascular equipment used for warm-up, conditioning and rehabilitation.

Sprinturf Practice Fields

The latest addition to Idaho’s practice facilities is the Sprinturf practice field on the east side of the ASUI Kibbie Dome. The field is split into two 75-yard sections with a 10-yard open area in between. The $1.2 million project included lighting and fencing in addition to the infill artificial turf. What it means to the Idaho intercollegiate, club and intramural sports programs, as well as student groups and Moscow residents, is that a grass field that previously had just 300 useable hours annually now has as many as 2,000 hours of use per year. The two 75-yard sections are separated by a 10-yard section of Sprinturf. The 75-yard length was chosen because it will allow enough space for both the Vandal football team and women’s soccer team to hold full practices and it will be enough space for multiple intramural competitions, but it is also short enough that two fields will fit. There are football goal posts at the north and south ends and the corners are marked for soccer. “The Sprinturf gives us a great facility to use when the weather turns,” Idaho soccer coach Pete Showler said. “It is a fantastic, true surface. It is the nearest thing to grass in terms of how ‘natural’ it is and in rebound resilience. The players are lucky to have such a tremendous facility available to them right on their doorstep.” Infill artificial turf was first installed at the University of Nebraska in 1997. Sprinturf is the surface used by the Philadelphia Eagles in their practice facility.

Guy Wicks Field

Facilities/Camps

The home of Vandal soccer, Guy Wicks Field is located north of the Kibbie Dome along scenic Paradise Path. The home field for Idaho’s women since the soccer program’s first season in 1998, it can hold up to 500 fans in an intimate game-day setting.

Vandal Soccer Camps The University of Idaho women’s soccer program has hosted summer soccer camps every year since its inception in 1998. The youth camps have helped the development of young players in the Washington and Idaho communities. The Vandal staff is committed to providing a positive, educational soccer experience for all the players who attend.

Vandal Individual Camp The individual camp is designed to help players learn new skills and to help further develop the skills they already possess. The emphasis will be on creating a fun environment where players can learn new skills according to their own ability levels. Players will be instructed in the dribbling, passing, receiving and shooting. Players are placed into age/ability appropriate groups to enhance their learning experience and each day of the camp concludes with a series of games in which players can showcase their skills.

Vandal High School Team Camp The team camp has been a fixture since the summer of 2006. It is a residential team camp for high school and graduated eighth-grade players. Players from all around the area are invited, either with their team or as an individual. The camp is designed to help players develop within a team setting. Each player will be trained in individual technical skills, as well as team-oriented tactical strategies. In the evenings, the teams will compete against other teams from around the area. In addition to team training by the Idaho soccer staff, the Vandal

Strength and Conditioning coaches will supervise and instruct conditioning and weight training sessions. Players will stay for three nights in the residence halls and receive three meals per day on the Idaho campus. There is also a non-residential option to allow players to commute to the camp. In this instance, the players will not stay overnight on campus, but will eat lunch with the rest of the campers.

Vandal Goalkeeping Camp The goalkeeping camp will be held for three hours each day. During the course of the camp, goalkeepers will be trained in ball-handling techniques, shot-stopping, breakaways and in handling crosses/high balls. For more information, contact Idaho assistant coach Katie Schoene at kschoene@uidaho.edu, (208) 885-9438 or visit www.GoVandals.com

2010 Vandal Soccer University President

Director of Athletics

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Ready this fall will be renovated athletic training and equipment rooms as well as state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms. Those projects, however, are the just start. Spear is leading a $52 million campaign that will change the face of the Kibbie Dome. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athlete experience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 93 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. This fall he begins a two-year term as a member of the NCAA Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.

Athletics, University of Idaho president Dr. Duane Nellis says, is an integral element of the college experience. It is a way to engage students and alumni, it enhances opportunities not only for student-athletes but for students, and is a way to gain widespread exposure for the University as a whole. “It is the front porch of the University and a highly visible dimension of the University,” said Nellis, who became Idaho’s 17th president July 1, 2009. “It enriches the college experience. Many of our alums have warm memories not only of their university academic experience but also of the social dimensions that come through athletic programs.” A native of nearby Spokane, Wash., Nellis earned his bachelor’s degree at Montana State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees at Oregon State University. He met his wife, Ruthie, at Montana State. Nellis comes to Idaho after five years as Provost and Senior Vice President at Kansas State University. Prior to his time at Kansas State, he was the Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University for seven years. Previously, Nellis served as provost and senior vice president of Kansas State University, which has more than 23,000 students, 1,600 faculty, an annual budget of more than $730 million, and annual research funding that exceeds $215 million. He oversaw 12 deans and 10 other units, including the offices of the vice provost for information technology services and the vice president for research. At Kansas State, he was responsible for strengthening its national leadership in selected strategic areas through targeted excellence investments, restructured and new programs that augmented student learning opportunities, and enhanced diversity and civic engagement among faculty, staff, and students. At West Virginia University, he led a highly successful capital fundraising campaign, oversaw the planning and construction of a new $60 million Life Sciences Building, provided leadership that led to numerous college faculty and student successes – among which were the establishment of a National Geospatial Development Center, a Center for Writing Excellence, and a Math Learning Institute, a revitalized WVU Press. He also strengthened social justice and related diversity programs across the college and university. In his professional role, he has served in various leadership positions as well. Nellis was on the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities Academic Officers Executive Council and was the National Chair Elect until his hiring as Idaho’s president. He also served as president of the Association of American Geographers, one of the largest professional geography organizations in the world. He also is past president of the National Council for Geographic Education; past president of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographic Honor Society; past president of the Kansas Academy of Sciences, and he served as one of 10 members of the National Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Research Universities Committee.

Explanation

Offside: A difficult rule to understand, offsides results when a player moves into a position where she is closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent. Offside only becomes an infraction if the player’s team possesses the ball and she gains an advantage by being in that position. The charts below illustrate the penalty. . onside

Ball

An attempt that is taken with the intent of scoring a goal and is directed toward the goal.

Shot on Goal:

A shot that is “on target.” A shot that, if untouched, would go into the goal. If a shot hits a crossbar or goalpost without being deflected by the goalkeeper or a defender and does not score, it is not considered a shot on goal. A shot on goal must result in either a save by the goalkeeper or a goal by the attacking team.

Save:

A save is officially awarded only when a goalkeeper or defender stops or deflects a shot on goal. To receive credit for a save, the goalkeeper must have stopped a shot that otherwise would have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper who stops a shot or a cross is not credited with a save.

Cross:

Also called a “crossing pass,” a cross is a kick from a wide position on the field into the penalty area in front of the goal with the intent of setting up scoring opportunity for a teammate.

Assist:

A player is credited with an assist when she makes a pass that directly results in a goal. Each scoring play can result a maximum of two assists or none at all. A player is credited with an assist if she makes a pass to a teammate, who then scores a goal without losing possession or having to elude a defender. If a player takes a shot and misses, she can be awarded an assist if a teammate scores off the rebound, but only if the defense doesn’t gain possession before she shoots.

Direct Free Kick:

A direct free kick that is awarded at the spot of an infraction for a physical contact foul such as tripping, holding, pushing, tackling from behind and jumping into an opponent. It is also awarded after a hand ball infraction. A direct free kick can be scored by going directly into the goal and does not have to be touched by anyone other than the player kicking the ball.

Indirect Free Kick:

An indirect free kick is awarded at the spot of less serious, non-contact infractions like obstruction, as well as offside infractions. Indirect kicks must touch another player, offense or defense, before the ball goes into the net in order to be credited with a score.

Corner Kick:

A direct free kick that results from the defending team putting the ball out of bounds on the end line. The attacking team gets to kick the ball from the area around the corner flag and may score directly from the corner.

Yellow Card:

A player is shown a yellow card as a disciplinary action for minor offenses, such as unsporting behavior, delaying the game, persistently committing fouls, or deliberately leaving or entering the field without the referee’s permission. A second yellow card results in a red card for the player.

Red Card:

A player is shown a red card as a major disciplinary action. Actions that result in a red card include serious foul play, violent conduct, spitting at a player, being given two yellow cards or deliberately handing a ball or intentionally fouling another player to prevent a goal or goal-scoring opportunity. The player given the red card must immediately leave the playing area and may not be replaced by a substitute, leaving her team short-handed for the remainder of the match.

Substitutions:

In order to complete a substitution, a team must inform the referee in advance and must wait until a stoppage of play, like an out-of-bounds. A player who leaves the field during the first half may re-enter in the second, but a player who leaves during the second half can’t return. In the final five minutes of a game that is not tied, the clock will stop when the leading team makes a substitution, but not if the trailing team or both teams simultaneously make a substitution.
