Twenty-one step finishing process on all exposed wood to enhance the detailing. The core of our cushions is Qualux, material that springs back into shape quickly and is more stable than the materials used by most manufacturers. Corners are double doweled and reinforced with corner blocks that are screwed into place. Hancock and Moore continues to do eight way hand tied coil construction. This time consuming technique, involves tying each seat coil with heavy cord, using at least eight knots.

Tongue and groove glue joinery; this insures a stronger glue joint which does not crack or split and allows for greater finished thickness on all tops. Pinned mortise and tenon joinery; Most Stickley joints are tenoned, glued and pinned with wooden pins. The pins lock the joint supplying additional strength. This joint would hold together without glue. One piece drawer fronts.

a letter from the publisher

Decorate your home. It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is. —Charles M. Schulz

’’

Our physical environments shape our days. I am a firm believer in creating spaces in our homes and offices that set the mood and inspire us to be our best. Wall color, furnishings, lighting and décor make a statement, not only to the guests we welcome, but to the inner recesses of our own minds as well. Surrounding ourselves with interesting things that stimulate can help us to be more productive and positive. Our most popular projects tend to be homes that tap into this philosophy. They have been lived in and creatively caressed over time. These places tend to stand out because they don’t look like anyone else’s space. They have artwork, collections, or just the right combination of furnishings that make them a visible extension of the residents they shelter. This issue of Housetrends features some of those spaces. Greg Espinoza and Mike Maly never give a second thought to the weeks they spend getting their Woodland Park home ready for entertaining family and friends during the holidays. It is a gift to all who enter to unwrap and enjoy. We also introduce you to a New Albany family who wanted their home to be the “go to destination” for their kids and their friends, so they created a comfortable lower level that could accommodate large gatherings and offer a variety of entertainment choices. Should you be looking for inspiration— whether it’s the holiday sort, or just great home design in general, we invite you to the Junior League’s Holiday Tour of Homes in Powell on December 3rd. It’s always fun to use someone else’s good design as a starting point to launch your own imagination—that’s what Housetrends is all about.

Candles, trees and traditions wrap home in Christmas cheer By Melanie Circle Brown | Photos by JE Evans

The first clue is the line of luminarias lining the front walk. The next hint comes from the fresh fragrances emanating from cedar roping on the porch and an evergreen wreath at the front door. The message is clear when the door opens and Santa greets you: whoever lives here has a thing for Christmas.

In this case

they would be Mike Maly and Greg Espinoza. “I grew up in Wisconsin where my parents made a big deal about Christmas, it was a magical time,” Mike remembers. “Our Christmas decorating takes us back to what holidays should be,” he adds. Mike and Greg’s neighborhood is Woodland Park, one of the city’s first upscale subdivisions. Their home was built in 1911 and is rich with history. “Two years ago a woman stopped by because her grandmother had lived here. She shared with us old newspaper articles and photographs about the house and her grandmother’s family, the Sweets,” Mike explains. Dr. Sweet was a prominent physician and the family entertained often, hosting high teas and engagement parties. “We bought the home in 2004 and are thrilled to honor its history by continuing the tradition of entertaining, especially at Christmas,” Mike adds.

Six varieties of fresh pine create overflowing boughs on the mantle. OPENING SPREAD: Each year Mike creates a letter to Santa on parchment paper and leaves it on display in his father’s old typewriter. LEFT: Father Christmas is on hand to greet visitors. RIGHT: Candles nestle in a bed of fresh cranberries.

I’ll be home for Christmas Nine interior trees grace the home and most have themes: Father Christmas, vacations, a red, green and white Santa tree. Each bedroom has a tree and the colors of the ornaments complement the rooms’ interiors.

11/9/11 11:10:45 AM

The “family” tree is laden with ornaments from Mike’s childhood, and includes handmade ones from nieces and nephews. There are also ornaments that Mike’s sister, Patti, made. Those are extra special, Mike says, because she passed away in 1999. Mike’s childhood toys like trucks, a baseball glove, and a train are placed under the tree. “Each year they come down from the attic I feel like I’m recreating the Christmases of bygone days,” Mike reflects. “Because my family lives in Wisconsin and we don’t get to see each other often, it’s hard to find just the right gift,” Mike explains. “So, about 20 years ago I started giving everyone ornaments, usually a collectible like Radko, Waterford, or Swarovski. I try to find an ornament that represents something special to them. For my mother, one of a cardinal or other bird; for my nieces, anything dealing with Broadway or theater; for my nephews, cars or trucks,” he adds. continued >

11/9/11 11:10:58 AM

It takes one day to decorate each tree. Every branch is wrapped in lights and the center of the tree is packed with solid colored ornaments as a backdrop for the featured ornaments. “We begin decorating in November,” Mike says with a chuckle. “The key is to set aside time and make it fun, not a chore.” Because Mike and Greg travel frequently, they stick to artificial trees.

Chestnuts roasting Mike and Greg are big believers in lots of candles to set the holiday mood. “Yes, it takes 15 minutes to light them all but it’s worth the effort because it adds such warmth,” they maintain.

A collection of old style Father Christmas statues—which Mike and Greg have been collecting for over 20 years—is displayed on the living room mantle. Mantles and tables throughout the house are adorned with fresh pine boughs. “We use six different types for various textures and scents and add holly sprigs, cranberries and pine cones,” Mike says. Poinsettias and fires in the fireplaces complete the scene. “The centerpiece for the dining room table is a wall mirror that I found a few years ago,” Mike says. By laying the mirror flat, he can place candle holders in various sizes on top which adds to the sparkle of the table.

TOP RIGHT: “Christmas decorations are like this great journey of your past that you get to unwrap once a year,” Mike says. BOTTOM RIGHT: The “family” tree on the upstairs landing features childhood ornaments and toys.

Let it snow “Christmas is our time to remember the past and share our home with friends,” says Mike. “We try to have a big Christmas party each year which is our ‘gift’ to our friends.” “We also host intimate parties—6 to 12 people—for close friends. On these occasions, we prepare the table ahead of time, and then pull the French doors shut and leave the room dark. Then, when dinner is ready to be served, we light the candles and the fireplace, and put the chandelier and wall sconces on dim, and unveil the magic,” says Mike. The dining room has dark navy blue walls and drapes—a color scheme he saw in the library of a residence in New York City and fell in love with. continued >

11/9/11 11:11:35 AM

Mike and Greg share some decorating and entertaining tips:

✷ Strategically place winter-scented candles to give a hint of fragrance.

✷ Place candles in the freezer the morning of an

event. Frozen candles will cause the candle to burn much slower and cleaner. Trim the wicks to ¼ inch before lighting to slow the burn and eliminate smoke.

✷ If candles are being used for illumination and won’t

be seen, use tea lights (ones with a 3 to 4-hour burn time). This is perfect for parties because you don’t have to deal with wax and they automatically go out—so you don’t need to worry that you left a candle burning when you go to bed.

✷ Use small white lights on a tree to put the focus on decorations and not the light color.

✷ Don’t make decorating a chore. Set aside a day to put things up. Eggnog, a fire in the fireplace, and your favorite holiday movie or music help set the mood.

✷ Label and catalog boxes of decorations to keep organized.

Use different lid colors to distinguish storage bins.

✷ Smaller trees can be wrapped in sheets and

tied at the top and bottom—ornaments and all—to be stored fully decorated, saving time.

✷ Enjoy your own party by hiring a small staff to

help with large affairs. Have them bartend, keep the appetizers fresh, and clean things up. It enables you to be completely focused on your guests, not hiding in the kitchen or restocking ice. It’s worth every penny.

The Christmas tree in the dining room features a combination of blue, crystal and glass ornaments which complement the room color and the Waterford on the table. Guests linger for hours in the dining room and Mike and Greg credit not only the warm decorations but their round table. “It was one of the best purchases we ever made. With the round table, everyone is interactive and engaged in conversation.” “When you live far away from your family, the friends you choose mean a great deal,” Mike observes. “They become our family in Columbus and some have come to expect the decorations, so it makes all the effort worth the while.” TOP: The warm glow of Christmas lights welcomes guests. Photo by Mike Maly. INSET: The Sweet family also entertained frequently in the home in the 1900s.

furnishingtrends “We want our place to be the ‘go to destination’ for our kids and their friends—that’s the main reason we decided to make this investment in our home,” says a New Albany mother of three in explaining why she and her husband undertook an extensive, thoughtful completion of the lower level of their home. With two preteens and a younger child, the couple wanted to create a relaxing, comfortable space that could accommodate large gatherings of friends who share their family-centric lifestyle. The couple turned to the design/build/ remodeling firm, Dave Fox, for an innovative and functional design that resulted in an additional 1,500 square foot living space that is the perfect place for expansive entertaining.

Blank slate Certified remodeler and vice president of Dave Fox, Bryce Jacob, explains that finishing lower levels can be challenging, due to limitations determined by locations of the home’s furnace, ductwork, sump pump, water main and other necessities. On the other hand, he says that the process is also exhilarating, in that he and the homeowner start their discussion with a blank slate. “The wish list was extensive, yet practical, including a full kitchen, multiple media-viewing areas, extensive storage and a full bathroom adjoining an additional bedroom,” says Jacob. He notes that when sleeping spaces are created below grade, code dictates the addition of an egress window. “Because the home had two pre-existing window wells in the front, the symmetry was perfect for creating two egresses— one for the bedroom—while the other brings in maximum natural light for the kitchen,” he explains. continued >

The final design places the main gathering area in the center of the space, which is open to the kitchen area and, thanks to unique and functional barn doors, also open to adjacent media-viewing areas. All but one of six support posts were incorporated into walls, some of which are several feet from the exterior walls, affording behind-the-scenes access to a built-in media center.

Carefree comfort Dave Fox interior designer, Tonya Lawrence, worked closely with the New Albany mother to select finishes that would meet the homeowner’s request for a space that would be comfortable and comforting. “She wanted fabric, flooring and wall covering that would not only be warm and inviting, but also durable enough to stand up to teenage guests, whom she wants to make feel welcome,” Lawrence explains. “My husband was an active participant throughout the planning process, particularly in selecting the hand-scraped, engineered hardwood floors that I would describe as a soft chocolate shade,” says the homeowner. continued > LEFT: The open-design concept is perfect for entertaining large groups; the expansive space extends from the full, Pullman-style kitchen to the built-in media cabinet, which is accessible from a rear hallway. ABOVE: The New Albany family was very open to thinking outside the box to explore new products, including the unique ventless fireplace that burns environmentally friendly fuel. An EcoSmart bio ethanol burner requires no chimney or flue or restrictive gas or electrical connections, allowing it to be installed in any area of the home.

“We love every aspect of our new entertaining area—so far we’ve hosted everything from afterschool snacks to a Buckeye game party for our friends and their kids. That’s why my refrigerator is stocked with everything from juice boxes to white wine,” she chuckles. “We were able to have all the adults in the central gathering spot watching the game, the preteens sprawled out in the carpeted teen room watching a movie, and the younger kids in the bedroom—which we can see into with the barn door opened— enjoying cartoons,” she enthuses. “This space provided a wonderful retreat from the extreme heat and humidity last summer,” the homeowner says, “and my husband and I are really looking forward to having a warm place to enjoy when the snows come to central Ohio.”

We

certainly enjoy surrounding ourselves with a plethora of delectable delicacies to eat during the holidays, and appetizers reign supreme as the food that is perfectly suited for holiday entertaining. From crudités to canapés, to hors d’oeuvres to appetizers, these lovely little food bites can be creatively concocted in so many ways that are endlessly satisfying. Hot or cold, hearty or light, sweet or savory—with so many options you can declare with confidence “yeah, there’s an app for that!” Here we offer a few of our favorites to get your holidays off to a delicious beginning.

Seafood Cucumber Stacks with Lemon Cream and Chives ½ cup light sour cream 1 bunch chives, finely chopped, divided Zest and 1 tablespoon juice from 1 lemon Salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 (4-ounce) package Whole Catch™ Smoked Salmon OR 4 ounces smoked trout OR 8 ounces crab meat OR 12 medium peeled, deveined and halved cooked shrimp 1 seedless cucumber, cut into 24 slices These refreshing hors d’oeuvres are equally delicious made with salmon, trout, shrimp or crab, so pick a seafood that’s best for your budget. For vegetarians, a slice of baked tofu is a perfect substitute for the seafood. In a small bowl, combine sour cream, half of the chives, lemon zest and juice, salt and pepper. If using salmon or trout, cut into 24 bite-sized pieces. Arrange a piece of seafood on each cucumber slice then top with a dollop of sour cream mixture and garnish with remaining chives. Makes 2 dozen. Photo and recipe courtesy of Whole Foods Market.

✽ Decorate your delicacies…Use simple garnishing techniques to compliment your appetizers and bring your presentation to a whole new level. Depending on the appetizer, garnishes can range from a bed of greens to curls of cheese or chocolate, to tiny fruits or sprinkled sugar or coconut powder. Garnish a dish according to its flavor and/or color (i.e. sweet or fruity garnish with a sweet dish). For other great garnishing tips go to: http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/tools-and-techniques/ how-to-garnish-cooking.htm

Tip:

If you’re hosting a holiday party, get everyone socializing easily by having a few of your guests circulate with trays of appetizers. This will inspire instant conversation even amongst those who don’t know each other.

Do you know your crudités from your canapés? A crudité is a traditional French appetizer comprised of raw vegetables. While canapé was once a French reference for the couch, some people thought a piece of toast topped with a savory food

Individual Veggie Pizzas with Two Squashes 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 each zucchini and yellow squash, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 whole grain English muffins, halved and lightly toasted 1 cup prepared pasta or pizza sauce 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese Combine zucchini and yellow squash because the yellow squash is slightly sweeter and balances out zucchini’s “grassy” flavor. Also, select your favorite pasta or pizza sauce for these pizzas (for added nutrients, select one with additional vegetables). Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add both squashes and garlic and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until tender. Top the English muffin halves with the sauce, cheese, and squash mixture and transfer to a baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. Serves 4. eleven Powerful

Powder

rooms By Holly Schnicke

Today, hall baths are much more than a room to powder your nose. Typically located on the first floor, this is a room that your guests will often see. Homeowners take this opportunity to showcase their individual personalities. Whether you’re inspired by an English pub or an original stained glass window, no two powder rooms are the same.

Another source of

inspiration may stem from the recent influx of unique and ornate sinks. Gone are the days of plain white porcelain bowls. Bring on the glitzy and glamorous vessels that command the attention of the entire room.

Try a mixture of colorful and texturized tile to strengthen the room. These tiles can

be used as an intricate floor piece, a fun backsplash or even as a floor to ceiling wallcovering.

Need

some inspiration of your own? Take a look at eleven of Housetrends staffs’ favorite powder rooms. continued >

Shanna and Matthew’s holiday décor is more formal with modern take on traditional. They have a room of golds and browns, one with white and silver, and another with copper and blacks. Their three children each have their own tree decorated with their favorite things which match their rooms’ décor. The young children in the home start their holiday with filled stockings and elves left at the foot of their beds by Santa. They each try to catch him bringing them in but to no avail, yet! This a special treat for everyone because they get to wake up and open their stockings and enjoy them right away while mom and dad get a moment to open their eyes, get coffee and cameras ready for all the fun. Throughout the day, the elves spend the holiday hiding, bringing treats and playing tricks.

Being their sixth home in 19 years, Eric and Crystal’s home is an eclectic collection of their experiences in life. Antiques and new furnishings blend together for a current look and comfortable feel. The entire family had fun designing the rooms. From the kids’ bedrooms, movie room, bar room and game room, everyone has their space to enjoy. Just as their home is an eclectic gathering of their lives, so is their holiday décor. The main tree is adorned with ornaments from the special moments in their lives and continues to grow each year. Coming from an Eastern European background the couple passes their heritage on to their children with a Christmas Eve dinner (Wigilia), breaking of the Christmas wafer (Oplatek) and the German tradition of hiding the pickle in the tree.

It’s a family affair at Mandy and Jeremy’s home, not only during the holidays, but year-round. Mandy’s father built the house and constructed the office floor, kitchen table, media room bar and a mantle from reclaimed barn wood. Mandy’s grandfather owned Acker’s Hardware in Columbus and several pieces in their home, including the ladder in the living room and the drawer unit in the upstairs hall came from the 100-plus-year-old store. The kids are in control when it comes to holiday décor, but the family tries to balance the birth of Christ with Santa. The children’s ornaments decorate the tree. Their son has a nutcracker collection and their daughter collects snow globes. Mandy and Jeremy buy an ornament from each place they travel and use childhood ornaments and Christmas treasures passed down from parents and grandparents.

It’s a tradition in the Brandeburg home to decorate a gingerbread house while the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center is playing on a television nearby. This family’s home is also filled with traditional holiday décor including wreaths, two trees and plenty of poinsettias. The lower level tree is decorated by the kids in the house with homemade treasures and family ornaments that have been collected over the years. The five-level split home features a see-through fireplace between the kitchen and living room as well as a recently redecorated bedroom and family room. When the weather is nice the family enjoys the patio and landscaping that they recently added to the rear of the home.

As you walk into Christopher and Kelly’s home which is a mix of modern and neocolonial styles, you’ll see their main Christmas tree which is adorned with Hallmark ornaments. These keepsakes are part of an extensive collection that has been growing steadily for over 30 years. Faux finishes stand out in the dining room and family room walls while a striking eclectic mirror hangs over the family room’s fireplace. Although the home is just five years old, the couple recently made a few upgrades when they added a children’s play room and parents’ entertainment area in the lower level and put a few finishing touches on the master bedroom and guest room.

The Horne family likes to enjoy the decorations throughout the season, so Ron and Angela start putting them in place right after Halloween. Outside, about 20,000 lights decorate the landscaping which gets the couple’s daughter excited for the festivities. Inside it is very simple and elegant—there’s a large tree in the family room near the stacked stone fireplace and garland on all of the banisters. A Dickens Christmas Village that originally belonged to Angela’s mother, finds its place nestled in the bookcases. The family makes homemade peanut butter candy from Angela’s great grandmother’s recipe. They also enjoy spending Christmas Eve watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story and know most of the movies’ lines by heart. Be sure to catch the lighted Indonesian Happy Shield inside the home’s foyer.
