Weather Claims Pro HK Event The appalling weather of late has taken its toll on le coq sportif Golf Championship, which has been cancelled. The HK$1 million professional event, which was due to be played on 24-25 June over the North Course at the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, was won last year by Australia’s Scott Barr (pictured), an Asian Tour regular. But the tournament’s organizer, Hong Kong Descente Trading Limited, was forced to take drastic measures after almost constant downpours affected the condition of the Gary Player-designed layout. “The dates were fixed with consideration to the golfers’ schedules in the region as well as other parters of the championship, including the courses, sponsors, co-organizers and the media,” said Descente’s President Kenneth Lee in a prepared statement. “We are sad to inform everyone that this year’s le coq sportif Golf Championship will not be held. Despite this, we are looking forward to gathering even better resources to host an even better event in the near future.”
Lam Finds Form in the States Two-time Hong Kong Close Amateur champion is enjoying his college life in the States – and backing it up with a number of fine performances on the golf course. Lam, 19, who enrolled at Santa Barbara City College, which is ranked as the number one community college in the country, at the end of last year, fired rounds of 68 and 69 to take medalist honours in the 36-hole Western State Conference Men’s Golf Finals at the end of April. His seven-under-par effort also helped his team, the Vaqueros, shoot a season best to win the event comfortably. SBCC finished the conference in second place behind the College of the Canyons Cougars. “I’m really enjoying it here in Santa Barbara, it’s so beautiful – we’re really close to the Pacific Ocean,” said Lam (pictured), a Hong Kong international regular for the past five years. “We’re able to practice on some great golf courses and I’ve been playing pretty well, too. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Just a week after his win at the Munsingwear Hong Kong Seniors Amateur Championship (see page 38), Doug Williams was in the States finishing runner-up at the Long Beach Senior Championship in California. The event, one of the most prestigious in the region and part of the popular Long Beach Golf Festival, saw Williams card rounds of 73, 75 and a brilliant 67 on the final day, to finish just two shots behind champion Jon Levitt. “My career as a senior golfer is starting off pretty well,” joked Williams, who turned 55 in February. 36
