ong Kong recorded their best ever finish in the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship – the Espirito Santo Trophy – in Turkey at the end of September. Played over the two courses at the Gloria Golf Club on the Antayla coast, the team – which comprised Tiffany Chan, Mimi Ho and Kitty Tam – put in a memorable showing to place alongside Malaysia in a share of 25th spot. The youthful side, which was joined by non-playing captain Margaret Hamilton and National Coach Brad Schadewitz, finished on a four-round total of 14-over and placed higher than a number of their Asian neighbours, including Thailand (27th), Chinese Taipei (tied 28th), Scotland (tied 30th) and Singapore (32nd). Korea, on 13-under, claimed the title by two shots from Germany in second place. Finland and Australia tied for third, a further shot back. “It was just a fantastic all-round team performance and credit must also go to the captain and coach who were always there to encourage the girls,” said HKGA Chief Executive Iain Valentine. “This was the best ever performance from Hong Kong in a world team event and everybody that has been involved in the development of the game here must be justifiably proud of this achievement.” In the Men’s World Amateur Team Championship (otherwise known as the Eisenhower Trophy), which was held the following week over the Antayla Golf Club and Cornelia Golf Club courses, the Hong Kong team of Shinichi Mizuno, Terrence Ng and Motin Yeung, skippered by non-playing captain Robert Keys, finished strongly to earn a share of 44th spot alongside Scotland. America-based Yeung, who was making his debut for the SAR, capped off the week in some style, firing a one-under-par 71 in the final round. The United States claimed the title by five shots from Mexico in second place. Korea, Germany and France finished in a tie for third.
