here’s a trend rising in fashion magazines. perhaps you’ve noticed it. like many trends, it initially reared its head on the internet. at first it was novel, then it became ubiquitous, and now it’s incredibly cloying, and my blood pressure spikes every time i see it. i’m talking about the word “sartorial,” an adjective that means “pertaining to clothes.” it’s hard to imagine a word that lends itself more naturally to a fashion publication, but this word didn’t gain purchase in the public lexicon until the Sartorialist launched his fine street-style blog (thesartorialist.blogspot.com) five years ago. magazine editors and fashion designers went wild for the blog — and for the adjective. at last, here was a way to sound highfalutin while saying virtually nothing substantial or contestable. you could insert “sartorial” anywhere in a fashion magazine, and it wouldn’t be out of place (e.g., the nauseating, breathless style newsletter that arrives in my inbox daily and always features at least one s-bomb: “We have everything you need to capture Zoe kravitz’s downtown sartorial savvy!”). now, i hate a lot of words (especially “glowy” and “gleamy,” two twee neologisms that have been surfacing in Lucky magazine). it’s almost an occupational hazard. Fellow style blog-

gers, fashion writers, general public — this editor beseeches you: Give up on “sartorial!” banish it, as you would your attachment to last season’s bedazzled Uggs, to the dusty recesses of your mental attic. try a new adjective like bombycine (pertaining to cotton and silk) or blattoid (pertaining to cockroaches). because “sartorial” is overexposed, passe, and what’s worse, its use was unflattering and clunky in most instances, anyway. and that’s just not good style at all.

udrey Browne is a serial flipper. In 18 years, the former attorney has renovated and sold 10 houses, often living in the properties as she transforms them from ugly ducklings to graceful swans. “Generally, when I flip a house, I pick the ugliest one I can find,” she says. “I love the process of making something hideous into something attractive.” But the renovation of the home Browne shares today with her husband, attorney Jim Weiss, and their blended brood — Weiss’ daughters Jordan, 20, and Tova, 18, his son Gerhardt, 14, and Browne’s son Harry, 14 — was guided by more than her sharply honed aesthetic. Browne was determined to create a home where the Weiss and Browne children would enjoy spending time. “We wanted this to be a place for the four kids to hang out,” she says. “A place they really wanted to be.” When the couple married seven years ago, Weiss, who’d owned the house for several years, was still charmed by its setting. Its large lot and quiet, oak-canopied Old Metairie street reminded Weiss of Shreveport, La., his hometown. “Jim loved this street even before he lived here,” Browne says. “He schemed about buying this house long before it went on the market.” Built in the 1970s and remodeled in the early 1990s, the house was structurally sound, situated on a safe, kid-friendly cul-de-sac and laid out in a manner that worked for the family, with a master suite and adjacent guest suite on the ground floor and four bedrooms for the children upstairs. It also featured a spacious kitchen and an open floor plan and was visually connected to the yard, which contained a wealth of unused land. But the original red brick and ’90s imprint left by an

earlier renovation felt dated and heavy to Browne, who favors a more contemporary mix of old and new, and a lighter, monochromatic hand. Raised in Palo Alto, Calif., she is drawn to open spaces, Mediterranean influences, verdant landscaping and the melding of indoor and outdoor living. With help from Matthew Voelkel of Studio MV, she concentrated on all of the above, adding a sunny den overlooking the yard, a pool, a cabana, custom leaded glass windows, more French doors to take advantage of the pool and patio view, and a mud room with plenty of storage. “Matt’s style is clean and modern but decidedly classic,” says Browne, who’s worked with Voelkel on other projects. “He definitely leans toward simplicity and isn’t one to gild the lily, which I love. We work well together because we both like to use natural materials and neutral palettes.” The house’s exterior was stuccoed and painted; stone terraces were added, and over time, new landscaping (which Browne describes as “French/Italian/Mediterranean”) became integral to the house’s casual elegance. Today, flowerbeds edged with orderly boxwood hedges and a patio pergola with climbing Confederate jasmine are part of the design. “I’m a huge fan of jasmine,” Browne says. “I love the scent, and it reminds me of northern California.” Inside, she painted the house’s red brick with a go-to neutral she uses in all of her renovations, Benjamin Moore’s Berber White, and lightened the heart pine floors with a process that involved sanding them, rubbing them with greenish-gray oil paint and sealing them. “With this house, a lot of the change was cosmetic,” says Browne, who prefers cosmetic over structural changes when taking on a renovation. “If the bones are good, cosmetic changes can make a big difference and give you a lot of bang for your buck.” She affected a complete facelift in the kitchen without changing its arrangement significantly. Molding, coats of glaze and new hardware were added to the existing Shaker-style cabinetry; the island was replaced with a larger one of Browne’s design, and honed travertine countertops replaced old green

granite versions. A rustic railroad tie (found in the backyard) trims the stove’s hood, a touch that, like the cabinetry’s glazing, adds the patina of age. Peacock Pavers, which resemble stone but are made of concrete, were used for the floors in the den, mud room and outdoor terraces. Over the years, Browne’s affinity for renovating homes and her love of design has led her to accrue a storage facility full of furniture and accessories, which she uses to furnish her home and stage the properties she sells. She regularly peruses consignment stores, antique stores and contemporary resources, collecting pieces she loves or knows she can repurpose. The method enables her to decorate quickly and save money without sacrificing style. “I like everything in my house, but I’m not sentimental about any of my pieces, and I’m always willing to replace something if I find something else I like better — which I inevitably do,” she says. Though a few pieces of furniture in her home have special significance, most are readily rotated as needed. “Because I stage the houses I flip, I can usually find a place for something that has been removed from my own house,” Browne says. The same is true of the art she collects from travels, local galleries and websites. Soothing colors are a common thread, making the pieces easily interchangeable in her serene interiors. The end result is a house that’s a comfortable gathering place and a hub for family activities. The couple often entertains, barbecuing around the pool or serving drinks in the cabana. “When we renovated, we did so with the intention of creating a home where the kids would want to hang out as they got older, instead of disappearing to their friends’ houses,” Browne says. “So far, it’s worked out pretty well.”

elcome, I’m the Jeantender. What can I get for you today?” asks Mary Wyatt Hines, manager of the recently opened Blues Jean Bar (5500 Magazine St., 895-2350; www.thebluesjeanbar.com). Clad in DL1961 jeans, which is the store’s best-seller because they don’t stretch with wear, this denim mixologist hand-picks a few pairs of jeans from behind the counter according to the customer’s choice of style, wash and waist size. Devised by New Orleans native Lady Reiss Fuller for her senior graduate thesis, the store is modeled after a bar, with a long wooden countertop and Friday happy hours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., when guests receive beer, wine and a 10 percent discount on denim. The boutique, which has eight locations nationwide, stocks more than 30 brands of jeans for men and women. Prices range from $100 to $200. “We carry totally different brands than anyone else in the city, from Kasil + Taylor Jacobson to BB Dakota,” says employee Julia Comarda. Recognized by People’s Style Watch for their personal attention, the staff works closely with customers’ style preferences and body types to match each with a perfect pair of jeans. “The idea is to take the stress out of the jean shopping experience, as opposed to having customers come in and be totally blindsided,” Hines says. — Morgan Ribera

SHISTER AND CLARKE’S

FOUR-STEP STRATEGY

T

TO NEGOTIATING:

1. Dare to ask. Don’t tell yourself, “They’ll never say yes to this, so I won’t ask.” Embark on a conversation. Don’t say no for the other side. Make the other side say no for themselves.

here’s a lot of fluff on the market when it comes to self-improvement books, which is partially why the cut-and-dried advice outlined in Dare To Ask! The Woman’s Guidebook to Successful Negotiating (Mulberry Street Press; www.mulberrystreetpress.com) is so valuable. Co-authors Cait Clarke, a lawyer, leadership consultant and former Loyola professor, and best-selling author Neil Shister dish out workbook exercises, “power tips” and practical, research-backed strategies that rival guerrilla tactics for sheer efficacy (e.g., “Appear to embrace the gender stereotype. Think of it as a clever decoy”). Here, Shister shares some negotiation tips from the book. Consider it The Art of War for the Manolo Blahnik set. — Missy Wilkinson

2. Know what you want. Know what your needs are. There is a difference. Be clear about what you want and what you will and will not accept. 3. Do some mental preparation before the exchange. Write it down in advance. Most people don’t do this. They show up, and then it’s like improvisational theater. 4. Listen to the other side. What do they need to accomplish, and how can you give them enough of what they want while still getting enough of what you want so it is a win-win?

Dare To Ask! is available for $19.95 at www.womennegotiating.com.

n a French Quarter shop stocked with makeup, accessories and wigs of every style and color, a 6-month-old Boston terrier puppy takes pleasure in exploring his colorful surroundings. Owner Marcy Hesseling keeps a close eye on her puppy, Pancho, to keep him from eating foreign objects. “At this point, everything is new,” Hesseling says, “and he just wants a taste.” Hesseling and her husband Ryan, who together run Fifi Mahony’s (934 Royal St., 525-4343; www.fifimahonys.com) adopted Pancho when he was around 5 weeks old from an allergic friend in the French Quarter. Now 6 months old, the Boston terrier has something of a dual personality. “Ultimately, [he’s] super loving and cuddly, and then full-on mischievous and playful,” Hesseling says. “He’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at this juncture in his life.” Whichever side he may be showing, Pancho is always friendly and sociable with people and other dogs. He especially loves playing with his pals Ladybird, a beagle, and Pony, a Chihuahua mix, even sharing his treasured soccer ball and toy skunk. When he’s not at the shop, Pancho can be found lounging by the pool or taking a swim. Upon waking, Pancho starts his day by

“stretching it out,” Hesseling says. “He puts all hands forward and legs out back and then he actually drags himself across things, either across you, which he loves to do, or drags himself across the bed,” Hesseling says. “It’s one of his cutest little maneuvers, for sure.” The Hesselings opened Fifi Mahony’s in 1997 and have been contributing to New Orleans’ costume culture ever since. The shop carries makeup and accessories and specializes in wigs that range from everyday wear to elaborate custom costume hairpieces. While Pancho hasn’t donned a wig yet, there are plans to eventually make him an Elvis wig. Also in the works is a soon-to-be opened salon. This November, Fifi Mahony’s furthers the symbiotic relationship between canines and wigs when it contributes to the Louisiana SPCA’s Howling Success fundraising event, held at Mardi Gras World. Fifi Mahony’s will donate wigs to the auction, one designed to resemble a pink poodle and the other a black cat. A friend approached Hesseling with the suggestion, knowing how much everyone at the shop loves dogs. “Everyone here is super big dog lovers,” Hesseling says. “Every single person that works here has a dog.” N OV E M B E R.2 0 1 0 <<<
