GEORGIA CELEBRATES AG WEEK KICKOFF Philip Grimes of Tift County was introduced as the 2014 Georgia Sunbelt Farmer of the Year and Nature’s Harmony Farm of Elbert County won the grand prize in the 2014 Flavor of Georgia Contest during the Agriculture Day in Georgia kickoff festivities at the Georgia Depot on March 18. National Ag Week is March 23-29, and National Ag Day is designated for March 25. Gov. Nathan Deal and Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black hosted the 11th annual event, which featured exhibits from dozens of agricultural organizations and celebrated agriculture’s contributions to the state’s economy and culture. U.S. House Agriculture Committee Member Rep. David Scott (D-13th District) was among the visitors, who had a chance to sample products from commodities produced in all areas of the state. Black urged the agriculture community to bridge what he said is a communications gap with the consuming public. Grimes “Many times we say the same things, but there’s a great opportunity for us to use programs like this to communicate better with each other, to look at economic opportunity in the food and agriculture business, but also to help develop that better understanding,” Black said. Grimes runs Docia Farms in Tift County. He will compete for title of Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year with the winners of nine other Southern states. The winner will be announced during the Sunbelt Expo in October. Nature’s Harmony, represented by Tim Young at the event, won the grand prize with its Georgia Gold Clothbound Cheddar Cheese, which also won the Dairy Products category. The other Flavor of Georgia category winners were: Adult Beverages - Richland Rum (Owner Erik Vonk, Stewart County); Barbecue Sauces - Causey’s Sweet’N Smoky BBQ Sauce (Wynn Causey Bakke, Cobb County); Beverages - Byne Blueberry Farms Organic Blueberry Juice (Richard Byne, Burke County); Confections - Peachy Keen Pecan Praline (Lindsey Beckworth, Washington County); Jams and Jellies - Weeks Cinnamon Honey Spread (Ray Crosby, Tift County); Marinades and Sauces - Q Sauce GA Mustard Marinade (Jennifer Adams, Gwinnett County); Meats and Seafoods - Ogeechee Meat Market Vidalia Onion Sausage (Matthew McClune, Chatham County); Miscellaneous Products - Hardy Farms Peanuts Southern Sriracha Boiled Peanut Rub (Brad Hardy and Robert Fisher, Pulaski County); Salsas, Chutneys and Condiments - Preserving Place Sweet Onion Confit (Martha McMillin, Fulton County); Snack Foods - M Chocolat Georgia Blues Blueberry and Pecan Bar (Maritza Pichon, Fulton County); People’s Choice - Leoci’s Raspberry Jalapeno Jam (Roberto Leoci, Chatham County).

Leadership Alert page 2 of 8 GEORGIA HOUSE PASSES FLINT RIVER AMENDMENTS The Georgia House passed SB 213, the Flint River Drought Protection Act (FRDPA) Amendments, by a vote of 164-3 on March 12. The bill, which clarifies the original intent of the FRDPA, now awaits Gov. Nathan Deal’s signature. The bill, which Georgia Farm Bureau supported, gives the director of Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division flexibility in carrying out FRDPA requirements. Previously the FRDPA mandated that farmers be compensated for removing farm acreage from irrigation during years in which the EPD made a drought declaration. Under SB 213 the EPD director has the option to conduct irrigation reduction auctions, but they would no longer be required. The bill also updates the FRDPA with provisions to augment steam flows to protect aquatic life during times of drought, and it prohibits water withdrawals from augmented streams. SB 213 was introduced by Sen. Ross Tolleson (R-Perry). It passed the Senate last year by a 52-1 vote. GA. TEACHERS GET SCHOLARSHIPS TO NATIONAL AITC CONFERENCE Georgia teachers Jeremy Bowman and Karrie Perrin will be among nine teachers and two volunteer educators recognized by the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture at the 2014 National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference for encouraging agricultural literacy. The conference will be held in Hershey, Pa., June 23-27. Bowman and Perrin will each receive $1,500 scholarships through the foundation’s White-Reinhardt Fund to attend the conference. Bowman teaches at Naomi Elementary School in Walker County, and Perrin teaches at Toccoa Elementary School in Stephens County. Perrin, the 2011 recipient of Georgia Farm Bureau’s Georgia Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture Educator Award, will also present a workshop at the conference. Agriculture in the Classroom (AITC) provides educators and GFB volunteers a wealth of resources for integrating agriculture, nutrition and natural resource education into the K-12 curriculum. AITC programs improve student achievement by utilizing innovative, hands-on relatable lessons that intrigue students while teaching core curriculum concepts in science, social studies, language arts, math and nutrition. The national AITC conference showcases the best ideas and latest resources from across the country - ready to take into the classroom. Early registration by April 14 is $380. After April 14 the registration fee is $425. Check out the excellent workshops and other events that are part of the conference at http://www.agclassroom.org/conference2014/index.htm. In related AITC news, Newton County Farm Bureau (NCFB) received one of 14 grants the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture awarded this winter to fund new ag literacy projects or expand existing ones. NCFB is using its $500 grant to install a hoop greenhouse at Middle Ridge Elementary School to teach students how vegetables are grown in conjunction with the USDA My Plate dietary guidelines. AFBF is accepting applications for the 2014 fall White-Reinhardt Ag Literacy Mini-Grants. Applications are available online at http://www.agfoundation.org under What We Support-MiniGrants.
