The GLIAC Staff Dell Robinson Commissioner

Mike McCann Supervisor of Football Officials

Dell Robinson became the GLIAC’s sixth commissioner on June 15, 2009. Robinson comes to the GLIAC having spent 10 years at the MidAmerican Conference (MAC) as the Associate Commissioner for Legislative and Compliance services. During his tenure with the MAC he acted as the staff liaison to the student-athlete advisory committee, the faculty athletics representatives and the committee on infractions. He also served as the conference administrator for men’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming/diving, men’s tennis, and wrestling. Robinson has experience on the national level as well, having been the MAC’s representative on the NCAA Management Council. He is the former chair of the Selection Review Committee which placed administrators on NCAA Committees, and has served on the NCAA Sportsmanship Committee. In addition, Robinson was selected to serve on the 2002-03 NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males. He served on the NCAA Administrative Cabinet and was a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Learfield Director’s Cup Committee. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Robinson served as assistant commissioner for compliance from 1996-99 at the Western Athletic Conference in Denver. Robinson has a bachelor's degree in sports management from Ohio University in 1988, where he was a walk-on to the Bobcat football team. He was a member of the squad's special teams unit from 1984-88. Robinson earned his master's degree in sports administration from Iowa State University in 1992. While at Ohio U., Robinson was in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and still maintains an active role in the organization. Selected as one of Cleveland’s Crain's Business Magazine’s 40 under 40, Robinson co-chaired the Parish Advisory Board at St.Agnes-Our Lady of Fatima and was a member of the Diocese of Cleveland Pastoral Council. He has served as the chair of the Ohio University Alumni Association and was a member of the Ohio University Board of Trustees.

GLIAC Commissioner Dell Robinson announced the hiring of Mike McCann to serve as the league’s supervisor of football officials. McCann will officially begin his duties on July 1, 2010. McCann, a native of Defiance, Ohio, recently retired from collegiate football officiating. His outstanding career as a collegiate football official spanned over 20 years working in a number of NCAA Division II and III conferences. McCann spent the last 14 years of his officiating career as a referee in the GLIAC (formerly MIFC). He was selected to officiate in eight NCAA Division II and FCS playoff games, most recently serving as the referee in the Division II playoff game between Grand Valley State University and Hillsdale College on Nov. 21, 2009. McCann’s experience in officiating also includes over 20 years at the high school level, having spent 16 years as an umpire and having been selected to work the 1996 Ohio High School Athletic Association football championships. McCann becomes just the third supervisor of football officials for the GLIAC, which began play as the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference in 1990.

Denise Gross Assistant to the Commissioner Denise enters her fifth year as the Assistant to the Commissioner. She began her duties on Feb. 14, 2006, which include office administration, supervision of the National Letter of Intent program, coaches NCAA Certification processing and communications with member schools. Denise comes to the GLIAC with twelve years of administrative assistant experience, including serving as a manager of the service department at a John Deere dealership and most recently a secretary in the pre-op/surgery department at St. Mary’s of Michigan Hospital in Saginaw. Denise has three children: Jared, who is in the U.S. Navy and is currently stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, Megan, a sophomore at Northwood, and Jody, who entered the Navy on July 19, 2011. Denise is currently pursing a bachelor’s degree in business management at Northwood University.

Ligney enters his 11th year with the GLIAC after taking over as the league’s first full-time Director of Media Relations on July 1, 2000. A native of Bay City, Michigan, Ligney has over 15 years of college athletic experience in a variety of capacities. Most recently he served as student assistant sports information director at Saginaw Valley State University in separate stints since September of 1996. While at SVSU he served as webmaster for the athletic web site, while assisting in virtually every facet of the department’s operation. He assisted in the production of media guides, wrote press releases and hosted a weekly half-time segment on Cardinal football radio broadcasts. Ligney was interim sports information director for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for a year and a half. In addition to composing the league’s weekly newsletter, he developed and maintained the PSAC web site. Assistant men’s basketball coach at SVSU for five seasons, he assisted with recruitment and other administrative duties, as well as on-floor coaching and was codirector of the Cardinal basketball camps. The Cardinals advanced to three GLIAC tournament appearances during his tenure. A product of Bay City All Saints High School, he played varsity tennis all four years and was a regional runnerup in 1989. He led the basketball team to back-to-back district titles his last two seasons. Ligney currently resides in Midland, Michigan, with his wife, Kim, and stepdaughter, Jordan.

Penny Cook began her duties as Assistant Commissioner for Compliance/Senior Woman Administrator on July 1, 2008. Cook received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and exercise science, with an emphasis in exercise physiology, from Michigan State University in 1987. She went on to earn a State of Michigan provisional teaching certification from MSU in 1989. She earned certification in physical education (K-12) and biology (7-12). Prior to working for the GLIAC, Penny served as Compliance and Academic Services Coordinator at Saginaw Valley State University, a position she started in March of 2005. Cook’s prior work experience also includes serving as Womens Director of Athletics at Division III Alma College, a position she held from January of 1999 to April of 2000 and then Assistant Director of Athletics from April 2000 to August 2002, where she oversaw nine varsity programs and acted as the schools NCAA Compliance officer. She held the title of Senior Woman Administrator at Alma from April 1997 to August 2002. Cook also brings 18 years coaching experience with her to the GLIAC, having most recently been the head volleyball coach at Alma College from May 1996 to August 2002. She served as assistant track and field coach at Alma from May 1996 through May 2005. A native of Perry, Michigan, Penny currently resides in Freeland, Michigan, with her husband, Tim, and two children, Anthony and Betsy.

Adam Tom GLIAC Intern Adam Tom began his duties as the Conference Office Intern on December 6, 2010. Tom received his Master of Science in Administration degree with a Sport Administration concentration from Central Michigan University in August of 2008. Proceeding CMU, he earned his Bachelors of Arts in Education from the University of Kentucky in August of 2005, majoring in kinesiology. Tom was a member of the football team at UK from 2000-04. Tom also serves at the Football Stadium Manager at Saginaw Valley State University, a position he has held since 2008. Prior to working for the GLIAC, Tom was an Assistant Baseball Coach at SVSU for the 2008-10 seasons. He has also served internships in the CMU Athletic Department and with the Lexington (Ky.) Horseman Arena football team helping with athletic operations and game management. 5

The league grew to 12 teams in 1994 with the addition of Michigan Tech and stayed at 12 teams until St. Joseph’s left after the 1995 season. In 1998, the league expanded to 14 teams with the additions of the University of Findlay, Mercyhurst College, and Westminster College, but would drop back to 13 teams with the departure of St. Francis after the season. Westminster would depart after the 1999 season, leaving 12 teams. Gannon University was added before the 2004 season, giving the league a 13-team roster. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. The GLIAC has earned the reputation as one of the toughest and deepest conferences in Division II with a strong postseason history. Three GLIAC teams made National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) playoff appearances. Grand Valley State made it to the national semifinals in 1978. Saginaw Valley State made three trips to the NAIA playoffs (1979, 1983, 1984), posting a 2-3 mark. Hillsdale earned five NAIA postseason berths as a member of the GLIAC (1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988), taking home the championship in 1985. The first team to represent the GLIAC in the Division II playoffs was Northern Michigan in 1987. The Wildcats made the D-II semifinals that season. Grand Valley State started a three-year postseason run in 1989, though the Lakers failed to get out of the first round. Butler joined GVSU in the D-II playoffs in 1991, marking the first year the league had two teams participate in postseason play. The History of GLIAC Football first-round win over Edinboro University (Pa.) before falling to the University of New Haven (Conn.) in the quarterfinals. The 1992 season marked the beginning of a five-year playoff run for the Bulldogs, with their best performance coming in 1995 after a national semifinal appearance. Grand Valley State made its fourth and fifth D-II postseason trips in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Ashland made its first appearance in the playoffs as a member of the GLIAC in 1997. After being shut out of the playoffs in 1999, the GLIAC posted two teams in the 2000 tournament as Northwood and Saginaw Valley State each made their first D-II postseason appearances. The Timberwolves claimed a first-round victory over Indiana University (Pa.) before falling to Bloomsburg University (Pa.) in the quarterfinals. The 2001 season was historic for the league as two teams made it through the first round of the playoffs. Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State each posted opening-round wins and faced each other in the national quarterfinals. The Lakers won a shoot-out in Allendale (Mich.), 33-30, and cruised to a semifinal win over Catawba College (N.C.). GVSU advanced to the championship game before falling to the University North Dakota, 17-14. The Lakers would redeem themselves in 2002 by claiming the league’s first Division II football national championship. Grand Valley State defeated Valdosta State University (Ga.) in the finals, 31-24. GVSU would repeat as national champions

in 2003. The Lakers knocked off North Dakota in that championship game, 10-3. Three league teams, GLIAC co-champions Michigan Tech and Northwood, along with Grand Valley State, would earn playoff berths in 2004. GVSU fell in the regional finals to North Dakota, 19-15. The 2005 season saw more postseason success for the GLIAC. GVSU, SVSU, and Northwood each gained postseason entrance. The Lakers and Cardinals battled for the Northwest Region title, but GVSU advanced, 24-17, and went on to defeat NW Missouri State, 21-17, in the Division II title game. In 2006 both Northwood and Grand Valley State earned postseason berths. The Lakers ran the table and meet NW Missouri State in the finals, claiming a 1714 victory and winning the leagues’ fourth D-II Championship. GVSU and Ashland earned playoff bids in 2007 and 2008, while 2009 saw Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, and Saginaw Valley State in the D-II postseason. GVSU made an impressive run to the final before falling to NW Missouri State, 30-23. Though many teams have made history for the GLIAC, the league can also boast upon individual accomplishments. In 2002, GVSU quarterback Curt Anes became the GLIAC’s first Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the Division II Player of the Year. Anes led the Lakers to consecutive championship game appearances, helping GVSU to the national title in 2002. The GLIAC had its second Harlon Hill winner when Wayne State running back Joique Bell claimed the honor in 2009.

2010 GLIAC Postseason Awards Hillsdale’s Troy Weatherhead Named 2010 GLIAC Football “Player of the Year” Senior quarterback Troy Weatherhead (Grand Rapids, Mich./Comstock Park) of Hillsdale College was named the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Football “Player of the Year” in balloting conducted by the league’s head coaches. Michigan Technological University senior running back Phil Milbrath (Norway, Mich.) was voted “Offensive Back of the Year”, while Michigan Tech’s Tom Kearly arnered “Coach of the Year” honors. The rest of the GLIAC’s postseason awards were chosen as follows: rookie nose tackle Jamie Meder (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) of Ashland University earned “Freshman of the Year” accolades; senior defensive back Craig Ray (Plainfield, Ind.) of the University of Indianapolis earned “Defensive Back of the Year” honors; senior offensive tackle Cameron Bradfield (Grand Rapids, Mich./Creston) of Grand Valley State University earned the “Offensive Lineman of the Year” award; while Michigan Tech junior defensive end Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) was named “Defensive Lineman of the Year”. Weatherhead guided Hillsdale College to a 9-2 regular-season record, the co-championship of the GLIAC South Division, and its second straight NCAA Division II playoff spot. In 2010, Weatherhead set a new GLIAC record for single-season completion percentage (.772), completing 220 out of 285 passes in the team’s 10 GLIAC games this season. He led the conference in total passing yards (2,815), average passing yards per game (255.9), and pass efficiency rating (174.0). Weatherhead also holds 2010 GLIAC “Player of the Year,” Troy Hillsdale College career records for most touchdown passes (63), most completions Weatherhead set the GLIAC record for completion (795) and most passing yards (9,144). He is the second Charger signal-caller to be percentage (.772) and led the GLIAC in passing named GLIAC “Player of the Year” in the past four seasons. yards (2,815). Milbrath earned GLIAC “Offensive Back of the Year” accolades after leading the league in rushing (141.2 yards per game) and scoring (9.6 points per game). He had eight 100-yard games and two 200-yard games with his career-best performance of 293 yards and two touchdowns coming vs. No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State. The 5-9, 200-pound tailback racked up 1,412 rushing yards, 375 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns during his senior campaign. Ray, a two-time All-GLIAC First Team Defense honoree, racked up a career-high 116 total tackles from the strong safety position this year. He amassed double-digit totals in tackles in eight games, including a season-high 18 in a win versus Ashland on Sept. 11. Ray started all 11 games for the Greyhounds, ranking fourth in the league and 13th in the nation in tackles per game (10.5). The UIndy pass defense ranked 13th in Division II, while the Hounds finished with their first winning season since 2007. Bradfield anchors an offensive line that has yielded just eight quarterback sacks in 11 games this season. In addition, Bradfield is a key contributor to an offense that led the GLIAC in total offense (453.5 ypg.) and is the only offense in the country to average more than 223.5 yards per game passing and 230.0 yards per game rushing. GVSU also led the GLIAC in scoring (38.9 ppg). Bradfield is part of a GVSU senior class that is 46-5 with four GLIAC titles and he becomes the sixth straight GVSU offensive lineman that has earned GLIAC “Offensive Lineman of the Year “PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR” honors” the last six years. Storm was selected as the GLIAC “Defensive Lineman of 2010 Troy Weatherhead, HC the Year” after pacing the GLIAC in sacks at 1.0 per game. The 6-3, 2009 Joique Bell, WSU 240-pound junior registered 10.0 sacks and 14.0 total tackles for loss, 2008 Bill Cundiff, AU which was good for third in the league. Storm was also credited with 2007 Mark Nicolet, HC 38 tackles, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and three 2006 Cullen Finnerty, GVSU pass breakups during the 2010 season. 2005 John DiGiorgio, SVSU Meder was Ashland’s leader in sacks (five) and tackles for 2004 Dan Mattlach, MTU loss (10.5-42) this season. He finished tied for eighth in the conference 2003 Mark Radlinski, SVSU in sacks and tied for 10th in tackles for loss. Meder’s presence helped 2002 Curt Anes, GVSU transform the Eagles into one of the GLIAC’s top defenses. The Eagles ranked third in the 1998 Jeff Fox, GVSU GLIAC in scoring defense and total defense, while tying for second in 1997 Paul Spicer, SVSU sacks. 1996 Matt Hoard, NMU Kearly was named GLIAC “Coach of the Year” after turning 1995 Bill Love, FSU Tech around from a 2-8 season in 2009 to an 8-2 finish in 2010. The 1994 Tyree Dye, FSU Huskies finished in second place in the GLIAC North Division and 1993 Bill Royce, AU were tied for second in the league’s overall standings. Michigan Tech 1992 Monty Brown, FSU / Scott Schulte, HC handed Grand Valley State its only loss and Wayne State one of its two 1991 Paul Romanowski, Butler losses as part of a 5-0 record at home on the season. The Harlon Hill Award Central Missouri QB Eric Czerniewski Claims 2010 Harlon Hill Award

University of Central Missouri senior quarterback Eric Czerniewski was the 2010 Harlon Hill award winner.

*FLORENCE, Ala. -- University of Central Missouri senior quarterback Eric Czerniewski claimed the Harlon Hill Trophy Friday as the 2010 Division II College Football Player of the Year. Czerniewski received 164 total points and held a slim six-point margin over West Liberty (W.V.) University's Zach Amedro in the closest voting in the 25-year history of the award. Amedro finished second in the voting for the second straight year, this time by just six points with a 158 total. Northwest Missouri State University senior quarterback Blake Bolles was third with 64 points. The award winner is determined in voting by the Division II sports information directors and was presented in front of a crowd of 400 at the 25th annual Harlon Hill Trophy award banquet at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center. The Harlon Hill Trophy is sponsored by the City of Florence, Florence-Lauderdale Tourism, Opti-Net, Marriott Shoals Hotel and Spa and Herff Jones. Czerniewski, a senior from Montgomery City, Mo., received 35 first-place votes in the balloting to 34 for Amedro. Czerniewski is the first quarterback to win the award since Jimmy Terwilliger in 2005, snapping a streak of four consecutive running backs selected. Czerniewski had previously been selected as the Daktronics Division II Offensive Player of the Year and first-team All-American quarterback by Daktronics and the American Football Coaches Association. He set Division II records this season with 5,207 passing yards, while also leading the nation with 5,203 yards of total offense and 46 touchdown passes. He threw for more than 300 yards 10 times this season and completed 66 percent of his 670 pass attempts. His efforts led Central Missouri to an 11-3 record, a number eight national ranking and into the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs. Selected Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year, Czerniewski was also first-team All-MIAA quarterback, first-team Daktronics Super Region 4 quarterback and Super Region 4 Offensive Player of the Year. Czerniewki shattered every school and conference passing record for a season and career and finished his career with 12,847 passing yards, 1,043 career completions, and 107 career touchdown passes.
