BRIAN GRIFFIN Face to Face Snowhill, Birmingham Until 21 November briangriffin-facetoface.co.uk
Brian Griffin, the Birmingham born portrait photographer who transformed the art over the course of a generation, is coming home for Face to Face; his first major retrospective. Griffin revolutionised portrait photography in the 1980s. His photographs find a connection with their subject, emphatically capture the essence of the individual or group, and immortalise that moment on film. His portraits have sensitivity and a sense of humour. Griffin does not, it would seem, have many commonalities with the Conservative Party. So, the juxtaposition of the exhibition (which is the result of an innovative private public partnership), coinciding with the Conservative Party Conference here in Birmingham in October, is stark. Against this backdrop Face to Face could be considered a defiant expression of culture, an art antidote in the face of nationwide budget cuts, or the exhibition could be held up as a triumphant example of private sector funding of the arts (depending on your political leanings). Yet this retrospective promises to rise above the political haze. Portraiture at it’s best is a celebration, both of collective culture and individual human achievement and Brian Griffin sets the bar. Known for the unconventional composition and exceptional lighting of his works, Griffin has captured iconic images of the likes of Kate Bush, Brian May, Ringo Starr, Iggy Pop, Helen Mirren and Vivienne Westwood. The exhibition inhabits two locations in Birmingham’s Colmore Business District. The indoor collection features two award-winning series; ‘Team’ and ‘the Water People’, and a large external display near Snow Hill station will showcase Griffin’s most celebrated portraits of the past 38 years. The outdoor site was once central to the photographer’s world; the station marked the end of Griffin’s daily commute, during the three years that he worked in a factory, before enrolling at photography school. Brian Griffin said, “I am a boy from the Black Country born in Birmingham. For that reason the city has always been close to my heart and it is an honour to be given this retrospective”. Donald Judd A Good Chair is a Good Chair Ikon Gallery Until 14 November ikon-gallery.co.uk
This Ikon exhibition marks the first comprehensive UK display of furniture, and related drawings, by Donald Judd (1928-1994). Judd is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, so if you are ever to view a furniture collection; this has to be the one. Forget your mum’s slouchy sofa, and your grandad’s favourite armchair; this is simple abstract design at its best. The structural minimalist forms are informed by Judd’s own work in art and architecture; though, curiously, during his lifetime, Judd spurned the label of minimalism in favour of the rather less catchy ‘simple expression of complex thought’ (ism). Judd remains one of the most prominent artists of the minimalist movement, despite his lack of enthusiasm for the title. The displayed collection includes elements of Judd’s early work that are rarely shown outside of the artist’s hometown of Marfa, Texas. These objects, formed from simple pine timber planks nailed together, are constructed by Judd himself. The intrepid public can then track the course of the design process across associated drawings and a presentation of prototype pieces that are later resolved. Finally, Judd’s later works incorporate industrial materials and techniques in the creation of more complex, sculptural furniture pieces. KB 06

Street Art Contemporary Prints from the V&A The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry 9 October 2010 – 16 January 2011 theherbert.org
Street art has become more than just graffiti, it has become an exciting contemporary form of art. This October The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, will be the hosting the UK debut public showing of Street Art: Contemporary Prints from the V&A. The exhibition explores the development of street art looking at the use of new media - including works on paper - and the preservation of what is an otherwise ephemeral art form. It also highlights recurring themes within the genre of urban art, such as historic and current subjects, traditional methods of image-making and styles familiar from art history. Featured are the works of well-known names such as the infamous Banksy, D*Face, Eine, Miss Tic, Shepard Fairey and Swoon. To maintain clearly the context of the imagery Very Nearly Almost magazine have provided photographs showing the street art in its original setting. Furthering to the V&A’s collection, the Herbert has commissioned six up-andcoming artists to create original works specifically for the gallery in their Fresh Paint display; Pahnl, SPQR, Lucy McLauchlan, Ben Slow, AsOne and Newso have all created pieces that have not been seen before, and will not be seen together again. To compliment the exhibition the Herbert are running a wide range of events in conjunction with it, including the It’s Yours, Take It event where we’ll give visitors the chance to walk away with a piece of street art which has been kindly donated by street artists. The V&A’s Street Art: Contemporary Prints collection will continue to tour when it leaves Coventry until the end of 2012 and is accompanied by a book of the same name. LB 08

JENNIFER TEE - LOCAL MYTHS Eastside Projects Until 6 November
Amsterdam-based artist Jennifer Tees makes her way to Digbeth, bringing with her a collection of culturally inspired pieces that find their roots around the world. Her first solo UK exhibition calls together a number of uniquely crafted installations, from a huge engraved marble column (pictured) to Chinese crafted porcelain feathers. All these works hark back to indigenous crafts and juxtapose each other by occupying the space in scattered and gravity defying forms. Much of these works were made in collaboration with Tee and others delving into traditional craft, but it is only now that they have been brought together as one cohesive display. On show with the exhibition will also be a number of Tee’s books, as well as a new publication Tee has formed in working with Eastside Projects own James Langdon. Gallery 2: Eastside Projects has put together a number of smaller exhibitions and shows to take over their subset space Gallery 2. Here is a look at what is coming up over the next month. Until 2 October: Square Describing a Circle - Elizabeth McAlpine A sculptural piece that plays with the use of light, time and how both plays with our perceptions. 7 - 9 October: The World According to MeDoug Fishbone You’ve probably never seen stand up comedy quite like it, but have a watch of videos of Doug’s routine and you’ll get some unique perspectives on this world. Come on Friday 8th from 7-9pm for a live performance of Fishbone’s show. 14 - 16 October: Ultra High Temperature This group exhibition takes a number of artists from Birmingham and puts together an eclectic congregation of pieces that includes: a sign holder, Japanese inspired aesthetics and a performance using dressmaking tools. 23 October, 12-7pm: Gottesrauschen (God’s White Noise) - Christian Jendreiko Part of Supersonic Festival, Dusseldorf artist Christian Jendreiko will mould a performance over the seven hours that brings together a number of experienced and inexperienced players. HIKER MEAT
Grand Union Until 13 November Thursday to Saturday, 12-5pm grand-union.org.uk British conceptual artist Jamie Shovlin is exhibiting his latest work at Grand Union. ‘Hiker Meat’ is an adaptation of Shovlin’s earlier work, Lustfaust: A Folk Anthology 1976-81 (2003-2006). Lustfaust is a fictitious band created by Shovlin. They have their own music, website and everything that you would associate with a band. Shovlin is using his previous creation to open his next installation. Lustfaust will be performing a score from a Rinzoli film which will be followed by sound and video loops that deconstruct and highlight the film. The performance will see the band compose and reconfigure the film’s imagery and sound across 60 televisions. Hiker Meat examines how film directors and artists have control over their intended message and meaning. Shovlin has produced a rough-cut, collaged film consisting of over one thousand clips of footage from horror films produced in the 1970s and 80s. Artists’ Talk, Friday 12 November, 7pm - Jamie Shovlin will discuss the Hiker Meat project with collaborators Euan Rodger and Mike Harte. This will be followed by an open studio event as part of the Art of Ideas programme. 014

Birmingham Book Festival is back in October for its 11th year. The festival was set up to encourage the city of Birmingham to engage with written and spoken word and has enjoyed success ever since. This year’s highlights include American journalist and author Lionel Shriver (Oct 19 at Birmingham Conservatoire), Jackie Kay MBE (Oct 20 at the Library Theatre) and evening tea and cake with Jenny Éclair for her ‘Chin Up Britain’ talk (Oct 14 at the Library Theatre). Writers and novelists from around the world will descend on the city and Birmingham’s literary illuminate will also be in attendance. Catherine O’Flynn (Oct 12 at Birmingham Conservatoire) will present her latest novel ‘The News Where You Are’ while photographer Pogus Caesar (Oct 15) will launch his book ‘Muzik Kinda Sweet’ at the mac. Birmingham’s new Poet Laureate will be announced on the October 7th (National Poetry Day) and if that gives you inspiration to try it out for yourself then there will be a selection of creative writing workshops on the October 9th where budding writers will be able to hone their craft or learn new skills. Sounds of Space 2010 Town Hall and Symphony Hall, Birmingham 7-9 October
Space may be a vacuum that is devoid of any sound, but luckily down here on Earth we can look up at the stars while listening to some bloody great music. To celebrate this fact, two of Birmingham’s premier music venues are hosting a series of concerts with astronomical inspired sounds; sprinkle a few talks and events on top of that for a weekend of cosmological frivolities. Make the most of your chance to see, for the first time outside the US, The Planets - An HD Odyssey, a production formed out of a unique collaboration between NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Houston Symphony. Holst’s symphony for the Solar System is set to a number of images collected from NASA’s archives that will be projected above a live orchestra. From the classical to the avant garde, as on the final night Icebreaker and BJ Cole will play Brian Eno’s space inspired modern masterpiece Apollo: For All Mankind. Those who purchase a ticket are also welcome to a preceding talk about by space historian Dr Christopher Riley, explaining the history of the Apollo missions. Along with a new commissioned worked by Steve Tromans called Musickosmos, and a free Sounds of Space Family Day on Saturday 9th October, there is plenty for you to immerse yourself in the majesty of the universe. Local photographer and visual artist Pogus Caesar is set to release a new book in celebration of iconic black musicians. Commissioned and published by Punch Records, Muzik Kinda Sweet will be available to buy online from the Punch website when it is released in October 2010. Caesar’s photographs were all shot in black and white on a camera that he purchased in the 1980s. His tool of choice, a Canon Sure Shot autofocus camera, offers a refreshing alternative to the digital creations of the 21st century. Most of his pieces have been taken in and around his hometown of Birmingham, documenting significant people and events. From Burning Spear in 1985 to Grace Jones in 2009, the book aims to tell the story of how black music has developed and regenerated over the years. Schools and hotels are among the venues visited to capture stars from Musical Youth to Kanye West, and occurrences such as the riots in Handsworth, the regeneration of Bullring and the surprising Birmingham tornado feature also in this highly anticipated collectable. His pieces were recently exhibited at Fazeley Studios in Digbeth, offering a complete thirty-year timeline of his work. 020

16 October Oxjam Various venues across the city The global Anti-Poverty takes over central Birmingham for a day of righteous rock. With venues including The Victoria, Island Bar, The Yardbird and The Flapper and acts such as Tantrums, Death Oh Eff, Sunset Cinema Club and Savant, Oxjam amalgamates the best parts of the city’s scene in order to raise money for a great cause. 22 October Supersonic Festival The Custard Factory The world-renowned festival of forward thinking music and art returns for its eighth year of experimental fun. Shifted from its usual summer slot, to autumnal residency, the new dates fit the lineups dark intentions with headliners including post-punk
deviants Swans, Brummie industrial fiends Godflesh and twisted grind of Napalm death. Hold onto your lunch, it’s going to get sickening. 25 October Gun Outfit The Victoria This Olympia three piece have the quality noise watermark of having their records released on Dean Spunt’s PPM label. In this instance there is no denying the No Age vocalist’s taste; Gun Outfit make ramshackle, riff driven, jangle pop churning-yearning and bittersweet tales of spoilt adolescence and dark teenage dreams.
28 October Dillenger Escape Plan 02 Academy 2 This algebraic metal act is infamous for their live shows, which in the past have included breathing fire, breaking bones and shitting in bags. This latest outing promises no let up in the New Jersey five-piece’s cynical intensity. Touring in support of this years ‘Option Paralysis’ record - a back handed epitaph to the death of indie culture - Dillinger Escape Plan will be offering audiences a wretched requiem for a scene that they are unlikely to forget in a hurry. Very British pub landlord, Al Murray, is opening his pub doors to the public for his Barrel of Fun tour. Murray’s no nonsense approach to current affairs has perpetuated him into the British people’s hearts and minds. The awardwinning publican has graced our TV screens with his various hit comedies; from Sky One’s ‘Time Gentlemen Please’ to the Royal Variety Performance (three times!). Wolverhampton Civic Hall will be echoing some of the guv’s now famous lines for one night only. Murray is not only a sell-out stand up comedian, he is also a best selling author with ‘The Pub Landlord’s Book Of British Common Sense’ selling 300,000 copies. The Observer has called Murray’s latest offering “The funniest live comedy show of the decade, possibly the entire century.” Punters can expect the usual side splitting comedy from Murray as he points out the faults of everything un-British. Geordie stand up Ross Noble returns to the UK comedy circuit after filling arenas with the biggest live stand-up comedy gig in Australian history. Noble will be gracing the stage in Wolverhampton with his unique style of stand-up. As suggested by the tour name, audiences can expect the usual ramblings and silliness that they have come to adore from Noble. Since the age of 15 Noble has been treading the comedy boards. Although today it’s a far cry from him being smuggled out due to licensing laws at his local comedy club. Luckily this did not put the comedian off and he’s become known as one of the most original and exciting performers to hit the comedy scene, in a long time. Since 1999 Noble has been wowing audiences with a new show every year for their comedy enjoyment. Noble has had success after success with everything he touches. It’s time to drag out the corsets, fishnets and stripper heels for the night of your life - ladies, you’ll also be expected to put together a racy outfit. The Rocky Horror Show is returning to the picturesque Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham and will undoubtedly aim to expose the inner transvestite in each and every one of us. Following the recent announcement that Birmingham’s master chef Ainsley Harriot will be narrating the show, tickets are selling like hot cakes to the wildest night-out of them all. Exploring the journey of prudish couple, Brad and Janet, as their car breaks down they stumble across a castle full of extraordinary characters; the Rocky Horror Show takes it’s audience down a scantily-clad path of fun and frolics and never fails to disappoint. Audience members are kindly encouraged to dress appropriately for this devilishly camp affair; usually the auditorium resembles a scene from Liza Minelli’s Cabaret. Running from the 25th-30th October, some of it’s crazy characters like the shocking Frank-N-Furter or the boisterous Magenta will be sure to get you in to the kooky spirit of Halloween. Combining video and projections, with live theatre; First Person Shooter follows the story of Adrian, a 17 year-old student from Malvern, whose serious habit of playing military shooters on his games console takes his life in a direction he’d never dreamed of. Adrian’s mum Maggie befriends Tom, a coputer geek from work, in an effort to learn about gaming and reconnect with her son. When a revolutionary new technology Tom invents gets picked up by the MoD, his life is rocketed from the virtual to the actual battlefield... More than just a play about modern technology, the piece also explores the complexities of relationships, fears and friendships between teenagers and parents in an honest and funny way. 033
