SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs TORONTO FC BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif. 7:30 p.m. PT (GolTV Can.)

April 9, 2011 (WEEK 4; MLS Game 35)

The San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC are both looking to get back to their winning ways when the clubs meet at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes returned home last weekend, twice coming back in a 2-2 draw with Seattle Sounders FC. TFC is on the road for a lone game out of five, coming off a 1-1 draw at BMO Field with Chivas USA last weekend. REFEREE: Ramon Hernandez. The Quakes have 4 points from 3 games on the season, tied for fourth in the Western Conference. LAST MATCH  Sounders FC took the lead after just 17 minutes. Mauro Rosales shook free of Sam Cronin on the dribble, then slotted a low centering pass to Brad Evans. Evans then beat Chris Leitch to the ball and knocked it home from point-blank range.  The Quakes pulled level in the 32nd minute. Bobby Convey threaded a great pass through three defenders. Dawkins raced to it and, from 12 yards out, placed a left-footed shot just beyond Kasey Keller’s reach, tucking it neatly inside the far post.  Seattle nosed back in front just before the interval. Steve Zakuani floated a cross into the six-yard box for O'Brian White, who fended off Jason Hernandez and struck a diving header that left Busch helpless.  But San Jose leveled again through a majestic goal. Khari Stephenson, who had come on at the half, powered home a blistering 35-yard strike in the 52nd minute that Keller got his left hand to but couldn’t keep out.  Earthquakes boss Frank Yallop made no changes to the team that defeated FC Dallas 2-0 at Pizza Hut Park.  SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (4-1-4-1): Jon Busch – Chris Leitch (Ike Opara 70), Jason Hernandez, Brandon McDonald, Ramiro Corrales – Sam Cronin - Joey Gjertsen (Khari Stephenson 46), Chris Wondolowski, Simon Dawkins (Scott Sealy 85), Bobby Convey – Ryan Johnson. TEAM NEWS  Simon Dawkins, acquired on loan from Tottenham Hotspur just before the start of the season, scoring his first MLS goal in the 2-2 draw with Seattle.  Prior to the Dawkins goal, Chris Wondolowski had scored San Jose’s last 12 regular season goals, extending his MLS record dating back to Sept. 15, 2010.

"Someone other than Wondo scored, so thank God for that," Yallop joked. "No, two great goals, to be honest. One, a great run and an interchange by Simon, and a terrific strike by Khari. I felt we played well. That's the big theme of what we do, and obviously winning games is important, too." Upon returning from national team duty with Jamaica, Yallop told Stephenson he would maintain the team that defeated FC Dallas and that Stephenson would go to the substitutes’ bench. "What was funny is, yesterday he goes, "Khari, you're going to have the goal of the season -- a 35-yard bomb,'" Stephenson said of the conversation with Yallop. "And then I said, 'And then I'm going to be the leading goal scorer (this season),' and so I did one. Now I'm working on the second part." The Quakes are still searching for their first victory at Buck Shaw Stadium, after falling 1-0 to Real Salt Lake in their home opener. The Quakes won just seven times at home last season, the fewest of the eight clubs to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs. “We haven’t had a good home record for a while now, it was important to play a good team at home and come away with a draw,” said Stephenson. “Starting the season off at home with two losses isn’t a good sign. It was good for us to finally get back into the game and tie it up the way we did.” While the Quakes have scored two goals in each of the last two games, they did allow a season-high two goals vs. Seattle after conceding just one over their first 180 minutes. “I think we are playing a lot better. Last year we were more defensive and relied on the counter (attack). This year we possess the ball more, creating more chances; last year we only created a few,” Bobby Convey said. “As long as we continue to play with confidence and keep the ball, we will create the chances and score.”

TORONTO FC Toronto FC remained unbeaten at home on the young season, coming back for a 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. TFC has 4 points from 3 games on the season, in a four-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference. LAST MATCH  Chivas USA took just two minutes to jump into the lead. Chivas midfielder Jorge Flores pushed into the TFC area, but his shot was blocked. But Alejandro Moreno was first to the loose ball, pivoting around Nana Attakora and poking the ball home past a charging Stefan Frei.  But the home side pulled even nine minutes before the halftime break when Alan Gordon was left unmarked in the box and easily headed in Jacob Peterson’s freekick from the left side.  TFC head coach Aron Winter made four changes from the team that defeated the Portland Timbers 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. Nana Attakora came into the back four and Alen Stevanovic made his first start for the club, while Danleigh Borman and Tony Tchani were also put into the team just hours after being acquired from New York. Dwayne De Rosario had been traded, Mikael Yourassowsky was suspended, and Nathan Sturgis and Dan Gargan dropped.  TORONTO FC (4-2-1-3): Stefan Frei – Ty Harden, Nana Attakora (Dicoy Williams 65), Adrian Cann, Danleigh Borman – Jacob Peterson (Julian de Guzman 46), Tony Tchani – Maicon Santos – Javier Martina, Alan Gordon, Alen Stevanovic (Joao Plata 70) TEAM NEWS  Toronto FC are still unbeaten at BMO Field this season, and after the trip to San Jose, return to the shores of Lake Ontario for three consecutive home games against LA Galaxy, D.C. United and the Columbus Crew.  “I don’t think it’s a great result for us at home,” said striker Alan Gordon. “You’re always looking for three points, especially against a team like Chivas that will probably be somewhere around the bottom of the West.”  TFC coach Aron Winter put both players he acquired from the New York Red Bulls in the blockbuster deal for Dwayne De Rosario – Tony Tchani and Danleigh Borman – into the starting lineup against Chivas USA.  Striker Alen Stevanovic, who was acquired on loan from Italy just over a week ago, made his first MLS start. He was later replaced by Joao Plata, an Ecuador U-20 international selected in the 2011 SuperDraft making his TFC debut.  TFC Designated Player Julian de Guzman also made his 2011 season debut, coming on at halftime. Earlier in the week he said he was still a couple of weeks away from recovering from off-season surgery.  “It will take time but the more training, the more games, the more comfortable I’ll find myself in the system,” said de Guzman.  With the departure of De Rosario, Maicon Santos was moved from a striker role into the attacking midfield position behind the front three, and had a glorious chance to hit for the winner after rounding Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. He was also handed the captain’s armband.  “I think I had a better chance than Stevanovic, because I was on the ball,” said Maicon. “But if he [defender Andrew Boyens] don’t clip my leg, I score the goal for sure. But that was, like I say, unfortunate. But that happens, that’s football.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

 

With Mikael Yourassowsky dropped, there was a third different back four configuration for three league games this season for TFC. Nana Attakora and Adrian Cann, the first-choice central defense partnership for most of 2010, were paired for the first time this season. “We see each other every day so we have trust, but for us it’s the confidence, you know we haven’t played together,” said Attakora to the Globe and Mail. “We had a new left back playing today, we had [center back] Ty [Harden] playing right back, so it’s just a confidence thing. You don’t know what Ty wants to do, you don’t know how the new left back plays and it kills us in games like this.”

Pronunciation available on last page of notes. San Jose in April The Quakes are 21-23-12 all-time in April in MLS play. Last Game Earthquakes 2, Seattle Sounders FC 2; April 2, 2011; Buck Shaw Stadium; Santa Clara, CA. The San Jose Earthquakes erased a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 2-2 draw against visiting Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium to improve to 1-1-1 overall. Khari Stephenson provided the game’s most exciting goal in the 52nd minute. Fresh off a pair of appearances for the Jamaican National Team, Stephenson teed up a shot from 35 yards that he scorched to the upper corner at the far post to knot things up at 2-2. San Jose initially trailed 1-0 after Brad Evans finished a close-range shot in the 17th minute. That set the stage for Simon Dawkins to score his first career MLS goal in the 32nd minute. Dawkins received a through ball from Ryan Johnson, turned and fired a left-footed shot that beat Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller to the far post. Sounders FC regained the lead in the 42nd minute when O’Brian White polished off a cross from just in front of goal, but the lead wouldn’t stand as Stephenson came off the bench to level the match in the second half.

Corrales Breaks Cannon’s Record for Most Starts in Earthquakes History With his start against Seattle Sounders FC on April 2, Ramiro Corrales set the club’s all-time record for games started at 172, a mark previously shared with former goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Earthquakes defender Ramiro Corrales was already the all-time club leader in appearances with 191 and second all-time in club history for minutes played (15,343). The Earthquakes captain will look to build on his new record this coming Saturday when San Jose hosts Toronto FC at Buck Shaw Stadium. Chris Wondolowski’s Record Scoring Streak Comes to an End With Simon Dawkins’ first-half goal on April 2 against Seattle Sounders FC, Chris Wondolowski’s 12-goal scoring streak for San Jose was broken. Prior Dawkins’ strike, Wondolowski had notched the team’s last 12 regular season goals, dating back to Sept. 15, 2010. The Danville native had two hat tricks and two braces during the streak. The record originally belonged to former LA Galaxy forward Carlos Ruiz who scored nine straight from 2002 to 2003. Simon Dawkins Scores First Career MLS Goal Earthquakes midfielder Simon Dawkins tallied his first career MLS goal on April 2 vs. Seattle Sounders FC. In just his second start in the league and third appearance, the British acquisition made a near-post run that Bobby Convey picked out with a well-placed pass. The import turned and fired a left-footed shot past diving goalkeeper Kasey Keller just inside the far post to tie the match at 1-1 in the 32nd minute. Both Earthquakes Academy Teams Earn Draws Against Santa Cruz Breakers The San Jose Earthquakes U16 and U18 teams were back in action in the US Soccer Development Academy league after taking the previous weekend off and each came away from their visit to Santa Cruz with one point. The U18s took the pitch first at Cabrillo College and jumped out to an early lead in the 6th minute thanks to a goal from Jorge Valdovinos. But the Breakers responded just ten minutes later through Daniel Johnsen, and the score would remain knotted until the final whistle. The U16s kicked-off in the second game and also jumped out to an early advantage with first half goals from Travis Pillon and Jose Navarro. However, the young Quakes were unable to make their two-goal halftime lead stand as Santa Cruz pulled one back seconds after the break and were able to equalize on a penalty kick in the 80th minute for a 2-2 final. Quakes Reserves Fall to Seattle Sounders FC on a Late Goal The Earthquakes reserve team battled Seattle Sounders FC reserves on April 3 in their second match of the 2011 season, but lost a nail-biter, 1-0, when Michael Tetteh came off the bench to score the game winner in the 87th minute at the Nutrilite Training Facility. San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Weber made several quality stops for San Jose and finished with seven saves in his second Reserve League start of 2011. Both sides had their chances at goal with a narrow 13-11 shot advantage for Seattle, but it was Weber that was tested more often with Sounders FC placing eight shots on goal to San Jose’s one. The Earthquakes Reserves return to action on Saturday, April 23 when they host Chivas USA at 4:30 p.m. PT at the Nutrilite Training Facility.
