Gort a winner on the Goldy

Local tennis coach Stephen Gort and his doubles partner Ross Taylor, from Southport, recently took out the prestigious Gold Coast Bruce Lynton BMW Open Men’s Doubles final with a 6–3, 0–6, 10–4 win. The pair beat Ryan Simmons and Robert Stirling to take out top place. Stephen, whose Australian ranking reached as high as 72 in recent years, has coached some of the top junior players from both the Gold Coast and Byron Shire. Stephen has been living on the Gold Coast but he has returned to his home town of Mullum where he will continue coaching.

Geckos school Swingers in Shand Series Brian Mollet

After a week of wretched weather the clouds parted on Sunday to reveal Lomath Oval inviting, glistening and slightly moist, like a supermodel’s lips, and hipster cricketers the Suffolk Swingers and the eclectic Geckos gathered and ready to give

the turf a little kiss. The toss was unrecorded in the famous invisible scorebook but must have taken place as the Suffolk lads raced out into the field where Levi (1–7) and Luke (1–4) were sharper than the razor wire round a detention centre with the new ball. Three catches to Barney

Close game for Babes The Brunswick Heads Babes soccer girls had not played for a month because of wet weather, holidays and a bye. Had the girls lost any match fitness? The last time theyplayed Pottsville they lost 5–1. Zoe led the team out on a beautiful Sunday morning. The first 15 minutes were very tight – the game flowing end to end, both sides having chances. A well-worked move found striker Isabelle in space with the ball. She took on the defence and dribbled past them, on the edge of the penalty area, and drilled a low hard shot past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. One–nil to the Babes. Pottsville responded from restart of play. They attacked

down the right side with only Zoe to beat, but she slipped on the soft ground, and the opposition striker struck into the net 1–1 on half time. Pottsville came out in the second half with all guns blazing, but the Babes managed to slot ball home 2–1 Babes. With only 10 minutes to go Pottsville kept attacking and soon equalised and were hungry to be the winner. The opposition mounted another attack. The ball found their striker only two metres from goal, and she hammered a shot. With only a minute to go Brunswick attacked the opponents’ goal but luck was not on our side. Full-time score Pottsville 3 – Brunswick 2. All the girls played well.

behind the stumps had the Swingers on top early but Vinnie began to bully anything short to the boundary, and when he was joined by the sensible Ross the runs began to pile up like money in a casino’s basement. A quick flurry of footwork and a couple of waves of the bat and Anthony had joined Vinny and Ross in the sheds, unbeaten. Owen and young fellow Jaden bowled well in the last overs but the damage was already done, the Geckos piling on 171. James then ripped the new ball out of the cellophane, bisecting swingers opener Carl with a searing off-cutter and then having success with a ball he calls ‘the Sharipova’, where he lets out a huge grunt but there isn’t much pace on the result.

At the other end Ali snaked in sliding curveballs and it took until the fifth over for the scorer’s pen to so much as twitch. Barney (19) and Owen held out for a while but the Geckos were snaring everything like a pod of farmers friends on a wooly sock, Vinny diving around the covers and Saint Seymour somehow getting all ten thumbs around a caught and bowled. In the end only Chi’s face-saving 23, while Jaden gamely held up one end, guided the shaken Swingers to a flaccid 77. Top votes in the Saffron Shand good sport award, thanks to the Court House Hotel, went to Owen of the Swingers and Anthony of the Geckos. Next week in the NSM, Main Arm take on the Left Bankers in the clash of the hillbillies.
