Ministry of Culture and Tourism

Organizing Indonesian Puppet Festival Jakarta (Bali Post)—

National Secretariat of Indonesian Puppets (Senawangi) in cooperation with Puppeteers Association of Indonesia (Pepadi), Wayang Museum and Bhakti TOTAL Bagi Indonesia Lestari Foundation will organize the Indonesian Puppet Festival (FWI) 2011 in Jakarta, on July 15-17 and October 19-22. Such festival will be enlivened by the performance of teenage and kid puppeteers including the selected participants from Bali denoting the result of Teenage Puppeteer Competition in regional level that will take place in July and October. Those selected teenage puppeteers will make their presentation in FWI 2011 of second phase going on in the Complex of Kautaman Pewayangan, TMII, East Jakarta. Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik on Wednesday (Jun 22) said that FWI was expected to be a medium to encourage people’s interest, especially among the youth to love the art of puppetry and puppet. “As the works of national culture recognized as cultural heritage of the UNESCO, it is worth to get special attention,” explained Wacik. In addition, said Wacik, the art of puppet had become an effective

medium in building the national character and identity, particularly among the younger generation. “Many characters in the puppet story giving us a model to have the spirit of warrior, never give up, respect parents and love the country. To sum up, all will establish the character and identity of the nation,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Central Pepadi, Ekotjipto, said that regeneration program of the art of puppetry and love of the community toward the arts of puppet denoted the focus of Pepadi’s attention. “Through FWI, Kid Puppeteer Festival, revitalization of puppetry studio and introduction to puppetry in primary schools received a great support from the Ministry of National Education and Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is the focus we are trying to run,” he said. (010)

Waning of cultural tourism

Bali tourism misses its identity Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Shifting of cultural values in the development of Bali tourism is inseparable from the weak control of government to oversee the growth of the sector giving the most contribution in the form of foreign exchange revenue. Government, chiefly Bali Government Tourism Office, only talked nonsense in implementing the Bali Regional Regulation No. 3/1991 concerning with Cultural Tourism. As a result, Bali is besieged by a variety shows having deviated from the aspects of cultural tourism. “Today, Bali tourism is missing its identity and without clear direction of development. Widespread cafés and nightlife spots being away from the values of cultural tourism show the powerlessness of regional regulations,” said the Chairman of National Executive Board of the Indonesian Tour Guides Association (HPI), Nyoman Kandia, in Denpasar, Wednesday (Jun 22). He said that Bali Government Tourism Office failed to guard the implementation of laws on Cultural Tourism. It was indicated by the rampant growth of alternative destinations. Indirectly, it would immediately restrict the job opportunity

that eventually made people become mere spectators and not as subjects or tourism perpetrators. “Holder of the policy has to take decisive action, never blames tourism perpetrators that sell. If government is really committed to maintain the cultural tourism, why should it issue tourism business licenses having no correlation with culture? Even, they are let go unlawful,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Government Tourism Office, IB Kade Subhiksu, quibbled if his party had implemented the regional regulation No. 3/1991. Even, the seriousness had been showed by preparing regulation draft to replace the old one. Draft of the regional regulation would control the business of tourism, tourism destination, marketing and tourism institution. Development of cultural tourism was aimed at improving the welfare of Balinese people evenly. “It is also intended to preserve the natural environment of Bali as a buffer of community life and Balinese culture sustainably,” he said. According to him, in years to come the tourism businesses had to characterize Balinese culture, have a vision of Balinese cultural maintenance and participate in cultural

development. Meanwhile, the development of tourist destinations had to pay attention to indigenous wisdom, cultural preservation, environment, rural communities and sustainability of the tourism business itself. Subhiksu affirmed that development of cultural tourism in Bali would remain to refer to the Law

No.10/2009 concerning with tourism. Development of culture and tourism environment would be governed by clear legal instruments namely in Bali Regional Regulation on Balinese Cultural Tourism. “The regional regulation is being discussed and remains in the form of regulation draft. Later on, it will be reviewed by the House

so in the future it can be passed into a regulation,” he explained. Subhiksu expected the active participation of all components attending the discussion to optimally provide advice and input for the refinement of regional regulation draft. On that account, the policy would be able to meet the requirements of law formation. (par)

Monitor lizard and snail satay getting favored BALI Arts Festival (BAF) 2011 does not only offer the art composition, but also Balinese typical culinary richness. Various dishes and drinks are served to BAF visitors. At culinary booth has been provided with numerous kinds of Balinese traditional cuisines like roasted pig, chicken betutu (grilled chicken with Balinese spices), mixed rice, serombotan (assorted vegetables served with hot spices), satay served with rice bag and so on. To quench your thirst, there is Bangli typical herbal drink that has already quite well known, namely loloh cemcem, herbal drink made

from a kind of mombin leaf. It had been present in the arena of BAF since a few years ago. Many visitors love the drink made from cemcem leaves mixed with young coconut. Except for menus that have been familiar with people’s tongue, one of the food stall namely Warung Prabasta tries to offer an extreme menu in the form of monitor lizard satay. Other than this lizard satay and curry, it also offers snail satay along with snail meatball and snail lawar, rabbit satay and seafood satay. “This kind of satay is quite favored because visitors had a belief if it can increase stamina and heal skin illnesses,” said Agung

Prabastuti, the stall owner when met on Wednesday (Jun 22). Agung said that her party had participated in the BAF for three times. Meanwhile, her culinary business had been initiated since 8 years ago, commenced by selling snail satay and then completed with rabbit satay and monitor lizard satay. “The result was pretty good and can be used to cover the booth rental expenses,” she said. Meanwhile, a number of BAF visitors who had tasted the menus said the lizard satay was pretty delicious and so were the snail satay and snail lawar. (08)

Thai PM to rally at sensitive protest site Associated Press Writer

BANGKOK – Despite opposition fears of violence, Thailand’s prime minister has vowed to go ahead with a campaign rally Thursday at a Bangkok intersection that was the center of anti-government protests last year that ended with more than 90 people dead. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the political rally, which comes ahead of the tense nation’s July 3 elections, would allow his party to tell “the truth” about what happened during the two-month demonstrations that paralyzed the heart of this Southeast Asian city in the spring of 2010. The military eventually cracked down and the ensuing chaos left much of the skyline in flames. “There has been one-sided criticism against the government and that (has) somewhat swayed

the people,” Abhisit told reporters Wednesday. “I’m confident people will open up for the speech and they would like to know (what happened last year) — it’s something that’s always on their minds.” The opposition Pheu Thai party issued a statement ordering its members to avoid the Ratchaprasong intersection, where the rally will be held in front of the CentralWorld shopping mall — one of more than a dozen buildings set ablaze by unidentified arsonists on the chaotic, final day of protests. Pheu Thai said it feared opponents could “attempt to cause unrest and blame the party for it.” One Pheu Thai leader, Nattawut Saikua, said there was nothing wrong with Abhisit giving his version of events, “but why does it have to be Ratchaprasong? Because they want to provoke emotional reactions from those who felt pain from the situation.”

LONDON – David Cameron “fully agreed” with US President Barack Obama that “sustained pressure” could be applied to Afghan insurgents despite a troop cutback, his office said Thursday. In a call made hours before Obama announced the withdrawal of thousands of US troops from the war-torn nation, Cameron reaffirmed to the US leader that Britain would remove all of its combat troops by 2015.

Friends and family of Timnek Jeampcom, left, and others gather during a “cursing” ceremony against the government and the rival party Wednesday June, 22, 2011 at the Erwan Shrine in downtown Bangkok, Thailand.

Obama briefed Cameron on the latest situation on the ground and “the implications for the timing of the withdrawal of the US surge,” according to a Downing Street statement. “The prime minister fully agreed (with) the president’s assessment, noting the good progress being made on security transition,”

continued the statement. The pair “agreed that in due course the progress on transition would make it possible to sustain pressure on the insurgency while allowing a progressive reduction in International Security Assistance Force force levels,” it added. Obama announced that all 33,000 US surge

troops would be withdrawn by “next summer” as a result of progress in the war against Taliban insurgents. In a televised address from the White House, the president said “we will be able to remove 10,000 of our troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, and we will bring home a total of 33,000 by next summer.” Obama ordered the surge in December 2009 in a bid to reverse fortunes in the war, which began in 2001. Cameron “reaffirmed that UK forces will no longer be in a combat role in Afghanistan by 2015” in a pointed response to senior British military figures who this week voiced fears that the drawdown was being rushed.

Kadhafi, ‘back to the wall’, says fight continues Agence France Presse

TRIPOLI – Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi issued a defiant audio message saying he had his “back to the wall” but did not fear death, as NATO vowed to press its air war in Libya despite Italian calls for a cessation. “We will resist and the battle will continue to the beyond, until you’re wiped out. But we will not be finished,” Kadhafi said in the message broadcast on Libyan television in homage to his comrade Khuwildi Hemidi, several members of whose family were killed Monday in NATO raids on his residence. “There’s no longer any agreement after you killed our children and our grandchildren... We have our backs to the wall. You (the

West) can move back,” he added. “We are not frightened. We are not trying to live or escape,” Kadhafi said, denouncing what we called a crusade against a Muslim country targeting civilians and children. NATO has acknowledged its warplanes early on Monday hit Sorman west of Tripoli but insisted the target was military, a precision air strike against a “high-level” command and control node. Libyan government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim said 15 people, including three children, were killed in the attack, which he slammed as a “cowardly terrorist act which cannot be justified.” Ibrahim said the attack was on an estate belonging to Hemidi, a veteran comrade of Kadhafi. “By what right do you target politicians

and their families?” Kadhafi asked in the message broadcast late on Wednesday. He claimed that Hemidi’s office in Tripoli had been bombed four times. “They were looking for him because he’s a hero. When they didn’t find him in his office they wanted to kill him in his home,” Kadhafi added, calling on the United Nations to send observers to confirm that the NATO target was a civilian site and not a military target. Kadhafi promised to build a monument, “the highest in North Africa,” to four-year-old Khaleda, Hemidi’s grand-daughter who the authorities said was killed in the raid. “We will stay, we will resist and we will not give in. Strike with your missiles, two, three, 10 or 100 years,” Kadhafi said.

BELFAST – Armed police on Thursday prevented a repeat of serious clashes on the streets of Belfast after local officials met to try and bring an end to some of Northern Ireland’s worst sectarian violence in years.

Bali protests...

Around 200 rioters faced off near the Catholic enclave in mainly Protestant east Belfast which has been the focal point of unrest over the last three days, but police averted any serious disorder, an AFP correspondent at the scene said. On Tuesday night, a photographer was shot in the leg and rioters threw petrol bombs and other missiles at police, who responded by firing water cannons. Several gunshots were fired in Tuesday’s violence, police and witnesses said, and a photographer working for Britain’s Press Association news agency was hit in his lower right leg. He was taken to hospital but was in a stable condition.

“So far, licensing of tourism business lies in the provincial authority by considering the area of Bali is relatively small. If permit is issued in the regency authority, it is worried to result in problems in the bureaucracy and inter-regency competition,” said Nyoman Parta when meeting with a number of tourism businesspeople in the Parliament Building on Wednesday (Jun 22). A member of Bali House, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, said that his party promised to immediately coordinate with the Governor in response to the issues. The policy was considered to undermine the tourism system in Bali. “It’s really prone to conflict. Structuring of Bali tourism will go very wild. Moreover, the distance of adjacent regency/city is very close, so it is very hazardous,” he said. Decree of Minister Jro Wacik entrusted to represent and understand the real condition of Bali was also deplored by tourism businesspeople. Regional Coordinator of ASITA for Bali, N T B a n d N T T, B a g u s Sudibya, hoped that provincial and regency government could respond immediately to this issue by making deals benefitting all parties. “Let’s hold on indigenous wisdom as the fellow Bali citizens. Competition in tourism must not be detrimental to the interests of

Police blamed pro-British paramilitaries the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) for starting the violence on Monday but said the shots were fired by dissident republicans, who oppose the peace process and want the province to be part of Ireland. “The UVF in East Belfast started this,” said Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay. “Their hands are upon this, whether by direction, by omission or commission.” Although tensions calmed on Wednesday night, opposing factions threw bottles and stones at each other and a police armoured vehicle intervened to prevent a surge of republicans from reaching their Protestant loyalist targets.

Like most paramilitary groups, the UVF decommissioned its weapons and declared a ceasefire following the 1998 peace accords which largely ended the bombings and shootings in the province. But it was blamed for a brutal murder last year when a Protestant man was shot dead in broad daylight in an apparent executionstyle killing. Peter Muhly, an AFP photographer covering Tuesday’s riots, saw a hand holding a gun emerge over a brick wall and then heard about four or five shots ring out before he saw his colleague had been hit. He said the shots appeared to come at random from the Catholic enclave of Short Strand.

Former French minister charged with rape Agence France Presse

PARIS – A former French minister and mayor with the ruling party has been charged with rape after accusations he sexually assaulted women working for him at city hall, prosecutors said Wednesday. Georges Tron, formerly a junior civil service minister from President Nicolas Sarkozy’s UMP party, is facing charges of rape and sexual assault by “a person in authority”, prosecutor MarieSuzanne Le Queau said after he appeared before judges in a court in Evry, outside Paris. Tron was released on bail. The crimes are punishable by up to 20

years in prison. Tron, 53, was arrested on Monday following allegations that he sexually assaulted women who worked in the town hall in Draveil, south of Paris, where he is mayor. Two women who worked with him at city hall filed complaints against Tron while a third, a former parliamentary aide, has appeared as a witness and also made accusations, but has not made a formal complaint. His assistant for culture at the mayor’s office, Brigitte Gruel, was also charged with rape and sexual assault and given a conditional release. Le Queau said Tron had denied having “any relations of a sexual nature with the vic-

tims, even relations that would have been consensual.” She said, however, that statements from the two plaintiffs, aged 34 and 36, were “coherent” and “corroborated on some points by outside elements.” Tron’s lawyer Olivier Schnerb said the conditions for his release include that he is not allowed to meet with any of his accusers. He said Tron insisted on his innocence and is convinced he will be acquitted. Being charged, Schnerb said, “has never made anyone guilty”. The two plaintiffs alleged that Tron forced them to let him give them foot massages, which turned into forced sexual encounters.

From page 1 Bali as a whole,” he said. In the meeting was also revealed that 80 percent of Bali tourism assets were controlled by outsiders, while Balinese only controlled 20 percent. According to Nyoman Parta, with controls of only 20 percent, it was clear that only such amount that could be used to develop Bali. Additionally, Parta said there were a number of other facts threatening Bali tourism. In fact, the Bali tourism was sold very cheaply. It happened due to rampant practices of underpriced package tours, illegal tour guide and unlicensed travel agencies. “It was revealed, out of 660 travel agencies, only 200 travel agencies that had made renewal registration. Meanwhile, the validity of approximately 400 travel agencies is questionable,” he explained. In the meantime, the Ministerial Decree posed a consequence of the issuance of Act No. 10/2009 concerning with tourism. Spirit of the law was to encourage investment in tourism so the investment did not require special permits and it was enough with the registration in the regency and municipality. In the discussion, there had been a proposal to apply special rules to Bali in responding to the condition of Bali as a single island. However, it was not permitted because it would lead to discrimination against other provinces. (par/ian)

Indonesia mulling posting legal affairs attaches abroad Antara

JAKARTA - Indonesia is considering the posting of legal affairs attaches in a number of countries where its migrant workers often face legal problems. “With a view on future eventualities, we now must think of the posting of legal affairs attaches in

countries where our nationals often face legal problems,” Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar

said at the presidential palace compound here on Wednesday after a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Wednesday evening. He said his office would prepare steps to be taken including the stationing of legal affairs attaches abroad. Indonesian domestic helpers raise their hands during a police check on the eligibility of the workers’ status to travel and work abroad at a shelter in Bekasi on June 22, 2011. Indonesian lawmakers on June 21 urged the government to stop sending migrant workers to the Middle East, and especially Saudi Arabia, after the beheading of a maid who murdered her Saudi employer.

Three death convict migrant workers have returned home Antara

JEMBER - Three Indonesian migrant workers reportedly on death row in Saudi Arabia have already returned home in Indonesia, a migrant worker activist said. The three Indonesian migrant workers are Nurfadila of Bodowoso district, Dwi Mardiyah and Nursiyati of Jember district, East Java. They have returned to their

respective homes, chairman of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) for Jember, Ahmad Mufti said here on Wednesday. He admitted his side had obtained news that the three migrant workers who once received legal aid from SBMI were facing a death sentence in Saudi Arabia. “The three migrant workers who are reportedly in death row have returned home in Indonesia around

2007 - 2008,” he said. Ahmad said that a number of print media had reported that there are 28 Indonesian migrant workers waiting for their execution, including Nurfadilah, Dwi Mardiyah and Nursiyati. “Dwi Mardiyah has been in Jember since 2007. She was once put in jail (in Saudi Arabia) and received a caning punishment 700 times,” Ahmad said.

“I will also set up a special team under the head of research and development to study cases faced by our country abroad, social and cultural issues there, protection of citizens` human rights abroad and other social and legal issues,” he said. “The team will give inputs to would-be workers regarding cul-

tural traditions,” he said. President Yudhoyono held a meeting with a number of cabinet ministers at the palace that evening to discuss a number of issues including the protection of migrant workers in the wake of the execution of Ruyati bin Satubi in Saudi Arabia recently.

HIPPI asks government to increase opportunities for domestic industries Antara

JAKARTA - The Association of Indonesian Indigenous Businessmen (HIPPI) has asked the government to increase business opportunities for domestic industries and products. HIPPI general chairperson Suryani Motik said here on Tuesday the government could realize it by opening business opportunities in the vital sectors for domestic businessmen so that they could boost domestic economy and export value. “Indigenous businessmen should become the main players in their own country,” she said. She said the growth of imports in 2010 was found to be faster than that of exports. This happened, she said, because the government had implemented a liberal economic policy that had even created a battle front for industrialists. Meanwhile, Suryani, said through regulations and de-regulations the government had indirectly created opportunities and means for foreign businesses to enter and control vital

sectors and strategic industries such as oil, gas, banking and other resources. While on the other hand she said there are seven non-oil/gas commodities that have bright prospects in 2011 such as textile and textile products, footwear, automotive, paper, palm oil and its derivatives, processed cocoa and cocoa beans and coffee. “With the potentials the government should have been able to give business opportunities to domestic industries and products,” she said. HIPPI Secretary General Herman Heru Suprobo meanwhile said the government had to take efforts to produce polices that side fundamentally with domestic industries. He said improving service and infrastructure had to become the main focus to improve effectiveness and increase production. “In view of the WTO if we do not encourage use of domestic products our goods and services would vanish. In view of that the government must be harsh with regard to open economic policies,” he said.

Yogyakarts‘s Malioboro needs to present more for tourists Antara

YOGYAKARTA - Yogyakarta‘s Malioboro street needs to feature more activities or objects of interest to tourists, local tourism official Putu Kertayasa said here on Monday. “To heighten Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY)`s attraction to tourists the Malioboro area must present more things of interest to them,” Putu said. According to him, Malioboro is the tourism and economic lifeblood

of Yogyakarta, so it should continue to be developed with new nuances in order to make it more beautiful in the eyes of both domestic and foreign tourists. “I am optimistic that with as many tourism activities as possible in the Malioboro area as the center of tourism in Yogyakarta, the tourists will keep coming,” Putu Kertayasa said. He said the Malioboro area is a Yogyakarta cultural tourism asset, and therefore both national and international activities should always

be presented there. “That is the reason why Yogyakarta city administration has conducted several international activities such as Jogja Java Carnival, and Malioboro Festival,” he said. He added that Malioboro Festival would be conducted from June 2526, 2011 to introduce various attractions of Nusantara Stage, Symphony for Indonesia, Shadow Puppet Performance, Sapta Pesona Competition, Malioboro Photo Competition, and Malioboro Food Bazaar.

Pictures of Bung Karno exhibited in Bali Antara

Denpasar – The photos of the first Indonesian President, Ir Soekarno, are exhibited in Bali House of Representative building. The exhibition with the theme “I See Indonesia” is being held for four days until Saturday, June 25, 2011. I Wayan Sutena, the head of the committee, said that the pictures are mostly belongs to Prananda Prabowo and they could give a glimpse of the life of Seokarno. “The pictures are clips that put together as one. We need to know the line of history of our nation and respect our hero and Soekarno is one of our national heroes,” he added. Sutena hoped that the exhibition can give a lesson for those who see the pictures. “As the young generation of Indonesia, the spirit of Bung Karno (how Soekarno usually addressed) must be used as an example to fill the independence of Indonesia in a positive way,” he said. Meanwhile, Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, said that he admire the spirit of Bung Karno in fighting against the colonialism. He never stopped even tough was being exiled

into deserted places. “His spirit never decreased what so ever. He kept fighting no matter what,” the Governor added. He said that Bung Karno was an incredible person. At the age of 26, he established a political party. “He fought from prison to prison. The condition which is quite different from today where the freedom of speech is guaranteed by the government,” Mangku Pastika explained. In addition, by seeing the pictures, the visitors can capture the spirit of Bung Karno who was never afraid of any threat. The Governor said “in my personal opinion, Bung Karno is the descendant of the God Vishnu. When the nation filled with fears, the God sent him to save Indonesia.” He told a story when he was visiting Vienna in Austria. He was very surprised that there is a restaurant

decorate the place the same as when Bung Karna came to the place. “It is amazing how Bung Karno is known throughout the world,” he added. It also means a lot for Bali. “Half of his sole was given to Bali. I as Balinese believe that he is the greatest leader ever. I also went to the place where the Netherlands exiled Bung Karno such as Bengkulu, Ende and Brastagi. The people there are really admire him,” he said. Mangku Pastika said that the most important value developed by the first President was Pancasila, the basic view of Indonesia. However, Bung Karno was only human who also had a bad side and it often made many people critic him. The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Head of PDIP Bali, Oka Ratmadi, Anak Agung Puspayoga, and other officers.

Advancement of science of technology does not answer all problems encountered by human life. In agriculture, for instance, modern farmers can now have boosted the quantity of production, even in multiple amounts. On the one hand, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality. Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an efficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers. Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system (Simantri). Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic. One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Socialization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality. As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could

also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter. However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand tractor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers. Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly. Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have developed the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to oppose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming. To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to reorientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)

Balinese Culture Offering varied contents

Balinese pop song no longer boring Frankly speaking, Balinese Pop Song Parade is one of the most wanted presentations by many spectators in the 33rd Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Hence, BAF is not excessive if the committee gave a respect to this performing art in the prestigious Ardha Candra Amphitheater. In terms of ‘packaging,’ the pop song parade this year is no longer tiresome because the content presented by each envoy from regencies/city across Bali was highly varied. Unlike in previous years where the song con-

tents were almost similar so they were like the tapes played repeatedly. Tuesday (Jun 21) night, the pop song parade was featuring the envoy of Denpasar, Tabanan, Karangasem and Buleleng. Respective regency presented five songs consisting of two songs sung by male and female kid singer in solo and duet appearance as well as three songs sung by teenage or adult singer either in solo, duet or group. Envoy of Denpasar entrusted to

For the category of teenage/adult, Denpasar featured male singer I Gede Arthanaya, IGN Agung L Indranatha and Nyoman Agus Pradnya Wiguna and female singer Luh Pujaniya Metta Parami, IA Gede Rina Widyasari and Kadek Thiar Pranitadani. They sang three songs in a trio and group entitled Ratu Anom, Cupak Gerantang and Omed-Omedan. Presentation made by the envoy of Denpasar was applauded very enthusiastically by the audience. Aside from showing off prime quality vocal, their elegant appearance was also graced by stunning choreography. Even, the envoy of Denpasar whose musical accompaniment combined the elements of pentatonic and diatonic music (Balinese gamelan) could perfect their stage action with dramatic effects through the sprinkling of gun smokes, dry ice and bubbles. Showing of Balinese pop songs on first day was closed by the envoy of Buleleng Regency coming with a very attractive and expressive presentation. Overall, the four envoys of the regency/city could give very entertaining and quality vocal performance. Unfortunately, quality of sound system and lighting did not support them to appear more perfectly. (ian)

BUSINESS Asia stocks slip on Fed remarks about US Associated Press Writer

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images/AFP

U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke prepares to deliver the keynote address during The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget’s annual conference where he called on lawmakers to raise the debt ceiling in a timely way or risk damaging the economy June 14, 2011 in Washington, DC. In recent weeks Bernanke said he believes job creation and overall economic growth to rebound during the second half of 2011.

Fed cuts growth forecast Reuters

WASHINGTON - The Federal Reserve on Wednesday cut its forecasts for U.S. economic growth, but offered no hint of further monetary support, saying the recovery should gradually pick up heading into 2012. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said factors weighing on the economy, such as high commodity prices, should be fleeting but warned some of the weakness could linger. “Part of the slowdown is temporary and part of it may be longer lasting,” Bernanke told a news conference after a two-day Fed policy meeting. The U.S. central bank kept official interest rates at a historic low near zero and Bernanke signaled they will stay there through the end of the year or longer. The Fed estimated the economy should grow 2.7 percent to 2.9 percent this year, down from a forecast range of 3.1 to 3.3 percent made in April. It also said it sees 2012 growth in a range of 3.3 percent to 3.7 percent, lower than its previous forecast. In a statement, the central bank said a jump in commodity prices and supply-chain disruptions from Japan’s devastating earthquake had weighed on growth and pushed up prices, but that those factors should dissipate over time. “The Fed knows it is in for a rough road ahead,” said Steve Blitz, senior economist at ITG Investment Research in New York. “At this moment the Fed is just like the rest of us, on the sidelines waiting to see what unfolds.”

The Fed confirmed it was ending its $600 billion bond-buying program at the end of June and reiterated it will continue to reinvest principal payments from its holdings. By the time its latest “quantitative easing” program wraps up next week, the Fed will have pumped some $2.3 trillion into the economy. The Fed’s downbeat economic assessment weighed on stocks, which closed lower after four days of gains. Prices for U.S. government bonds were nearly flat and the dollar edged up against the euro. “There are no hints of further easing from the Fed,” said Nick Bennenbroek, head of Group of 20 forex strategy at Wells Fargo in New York. “The statement overall disappointed investors looking for more bearish language and that’s why we are seeing the dollar rally a little bit.” Bernanke, in a wide-ranging question-and-answer session with reporters which touched on issues as diverse as Greece’s economic woes and the size of reserves that big banks should hold, conceded that U.S. economic hopes were partly hostage to events in Europe. “If there were a failure to resolve that (Greek debt) situation, it would pose threats to the European financial

system, the global financial system, and to European political unity,” he said. “So yes, we did discuss it and it is one of several potential financial risks that we are facing now.” Two years after the end of the U.S. recession, the recovery looks disappointingly weak. Employers have been reluctant to hire and the jobless rate rose to 9.1 percent in May. The Fed on Wednesday downgraded its view of the labor market and pushed its forecast for unemployment a bit higher. It said the jobless rate would likely average 8.6 percent to 8.9 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011. In April, it had forecast a range of 8.4 to 8.7 percent. By 2013, the Fed said joblessness would still be significantly above what it considers to be consistent with full employment. The Fed’s inflation forecast was little changed at 2.3 percent to 2.5 percent for this year, but its projection of core prices, which strips out food and energy costs, moved up to a 1.5-to1.8-percent range from 1.3 to 1.6 percent. Policymakers at the Fed strive to keep inflation in a 1.7-to-2-percent range and the acceleration in core prices could complicate any desire to further support the economy.

BANGKOK - Asian stock markets followed Wall Street down on Thursday after the Federal Reserve admitted to being caught off guard by recent signs of deterioration in the U.S. economy. Oil prices fell to near $94 a barrel amid a stronger U.S. dollar. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped 0.4 percent to 9,594, with shares lower in heavy machinery and equipment makers - companies likely to feel a slowdown in the global economy more sharply. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. dropped 1.6 percent and Komatsu Ltd. lost 1.4 percent. But Japanese export shares benefited from a weaker yen, which makes products sent overseas cheaper. Consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. rose 1.1 percent. Isuzu Motors Ltd., which on Wednesday forecast an increase in dividends for the fiscal year through March, rose 3.7 percent. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.8 percent to 21,696.79, with banking shares slumping a day after the China acknowledged that surging inflation will rise again this month - raising the possibility of more action by China’s central bank to tighten monetary policy. China Construction Bank Ltd., the country’s third-biggest commercial lender, slid 2.3 percent. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the world’s biggest bank by market value, was down 1.6 percent. South Korea’s Kospi was 0.2 percent lower at 2,058.88 and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5 percent to 4,511.40. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and Indo-

nesia were also lower, while those in New Zealand and Malaysia were higher. Investor sentiment slid Wednesday, after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said at a news conference in Washington that some of the problems plaguing the U.S. economy such as weakness in the financial industry and the housing market and “may be stronger and more persistent than we thought.” Earlier, the Fed released a slightly lower forecast for U.S. economic growth this year. The Fed said it now expects the economy to grow between 2.7 percent and 2.9 percent this year, down from its previous estimate of 3.1 percent to 3.3 percent after its last meeting in April. The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 index slumped after Bernanke’s cautious remarks about the economy. The Dow closed down 0.7 percent at 12,109.67. The S&P 500 index fell 0.7 percent to close at 1,287.14. The Nasdaq fell 0.7 percent to 2,669.19. Even with the dimmer outlook, the Fed pledged no new help to boost the economy. The central bank’s $600 billion bond-buying program draws to a close at the end of this month. Benchmark oil for August delivery was down $1.19 to $94.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $1.24 to settle at $95.41 on Wednesday. In currencies, the euro dropped to $1.4312 from $1.4376 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar strengthened to 80.48 yen from 80.

Asia’s wealthy population overtake Europe Associated Press Writer

HONG KONG - A new report says Asia now has the world’s second-biggest population of wealthy people, overtaking Europe for the first time. Thursday’s report says the Asia-Pacific region was home to 3.3 million people in 2010 worth $1 million or more, not including their homes. That’s an increase of roughly 10 per-

cent from 2009, putting it ahead of Europe’s 3.1 million. Asia is now second only to North America, which has 3.4 million wealthy people, according to the report by Merrill Lynch’s wealth management division and consultancy Capgemini. The report’s findings illustrate how Asia’s economies are growing much more quickly than developed countries.

LONDON – Harry Potter’s adventures are going digital. Author J.K. Rowling announced Thursday that her seven Potter novels will be sold as e-books starting in October — ending the boy wizard’s status as one of the highest-profile holdouts against digital publishing. ‘Futurama’ goes on a Bender in new season Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – For Bender fans, the new season of “Futurama” is mandatory. For romantics eager to see Fry and lovely Leela draw closer, it’s a must-see. And devotees of Japanese anime, get ready for a treat. In other words, skip the Emmy-winning “Futurama” in its second year on Comedy Central, starting 10 p.m. EDT Thursday, and you’ll be sorry — whether you’re a science fiction fan or not. The former Fox animated series tracks the adventures of pizza delivery boy Philip Fry (voiced by Billy West), who inadvertently turned himself into a human Popsicle in 1999 and woke up 1,000 years later. Employment (whew!) was available. At Planet Express, an intergalactic delivery service, Fry works alongside Leela (Katey Sagal), a tough, one-eyed babe, and best friend Bender (John DiMaggio), a robot whose grip on morality and manners is tenuous. The 13-episode run kicks off on a funky note with the episode titled, “Neutopia.” The Planet Express crew crashes on a planet inhabited by

a being who, unfamiliar with the concept of gender, decides to experiment on our heroes and heroines. Pitch-perfect satire ensues, with both sexes taking it on the chin. At one point, the women risk a fiery death to check out an apparent clearance sale. “I can’t believe that sale was just a mirage. The men, also trying to save themselves but hopelessly lost, encounter a friendly native. “Hi, there, you fellas need some directions?” he asks. Their response: a stubborn chorus of “No!” and “Don’t worry about it.” In the June 30 “Benderama” episode, the robot with the cigar habit and no discernible work ethic learns how to replicate himself, creating an army of Benders that scale smaller and smaller but cause big trouble. “People always say `More Bender!’ Well, believe me ...” said series creator Matt Groening, chuckles overtaking his words as he contemplates the havoc wrought by multiple Benders.

in her world of wizards, combining elements of computer games, social networking and an online store. Rowling says the site includes “information I have been hoarding for years” about the books’ characters and settings. “Pottermore” has been the subject of intense speculation among Potter fans since it appeared on the Internet with the words “coming soon.” The project unveiled in London lets Potter fans delve into the world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sections let users shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary Platform 9 3/4 at London’s King’s Cross train station and be

sorted into Hogwarts school houses by the perceptive Sorting Hat. Along the way are wand fights, games and new information about characters beloved around the world, including Harry’s reviled relatives, the Dursleys. The site goes live July 31, when 1 million registered users will be chosen to help flesh out the online world. It will be open to all users from October, in languages including English, French, German and Spanish. “(It’s) a way I can be creative in a medium that didn’t exist when I started the books back in 1990,” Rowling told reporters, a way to incorporate the thousands of “stories, drawings, ideas, suggestions” she still receives from fans, four years after the last Potter book was published. Harry Potter fans who have been sharing enthusiasm and stories online for years should be delighted by the new digital world. But Rowling said she wanted to keep the emphasis of the site firmly on the written word.

Lady Gaga on Japan: It’s safe, food’s great Associated Press Writer

TOKYO – Lady Gaga says that if you want to help Japan recover from its tsunami disaster, come visit. The flamboyant pop star, in Tokyo this week for a benefit concert for tsunami victims, said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press that she’s making a point to get out and enjoy the city and its food, and that her fans should do the same thing. “I can’t say enough to people all over the world that the majority of Japan right now, Japan in general, is very safe,” she said. “It’s fine to come here. It’s beautiful.” Many performers and athletes have canceled appearances in Japan after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that caused widespread destruction and set off a crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant about 140 miles (220 kilometers) north of Tokyo. Tens of thousands of people were forced to leave homes near the plant because of the radiation danger, but even far from the evacuation zone, Japanese tourism has suffered because of the disaster. Lady Gaga said she couldn’t

wait for the chance to show her support. “The most important thing, and the best thing, we could do for Japan right now is to boost tourism, and so everyone come to Japan and come enjoy the beautiful country,” she said. The singer received a certificate from the commissioner of the Japan Tourism Agency on Thursday, thanking her for her support and money-raising efforts. After her appearance at MTV Video Music Aid Japan on Saturday, Lady Gaga will move on to Taiwan on July 1.hoto/ Shizuo Kambayashi)

WASHINGTON – Some of the earliest Americans turn out to have been artists. A bone fragment at least 13,000 years old, with the carved image of a mammoth or mastodon, has been discovered in Florida, a new study reports. While prehistoric art depicting animals with trunks has been found in Europe, this may be the first in the Western Hemisphere, researchers report Wednesday in the Journal of Archaeological Science. “It’s pretty exciting, we haven’t found anything like this in North America,” said Dennis J. Stanford, curator of North American Archaeology at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, who was a co-author of the report. They hunted these animals, Stanford explained, and “you see people drawing all kinds of pictures that are of relevance and importance to them.” “Much of the real significance of such finds is in the tangible, emotional connection they allow us

to feel with people in the deep past,” said Dietrich Stout, an anthropologist at Emory University in Atlanta, who was not part of the research team. Cave paintings showing animals have been found in Texas, but those were dated to about 4,000 years ago, much more recent than the newly found carved bone. The bone fragment, discovered in Vero Beach, Fla., contains an incised image about 3 inches long from head to tail and about 1 3/4 inches from head to foot.

“There was considerable skepticism expressed about the authenticity of the incising on the bone until it was examined exhaustively by archaeologists, paleontologists, forensic anthropologists, materials science engineers and artists,” lead author Barbara Purdy of the University of Florida said in a statement. The bone was found by a fossil hunter near a location, known as the Old Vero Site, where human bones were found side-by-side with the bones of extinct Ice Age animals in an excavation from 1913 to 1916. It was heavily mineralized, which prevented standard dating, Stanford explained. But mammoths and mastodons had died out in the Americas by 13,000 years ago, so it has to be older than that. “It could be quite early,” he added.

Potato chips are piling on the pounds, study finds Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – Blame the potato chip. It’s the biggest demon behind that pound-a-year weight creep that plagues many of us, a major diet study found. Bigger than soda, candy and ice cream. And the reason is partly that old advertising cliche: You can’t eat just one. “They’re very tasty and they have a very good texture. People generally don’t take one or two chips. They have a whole bag,” said obesity expert Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer of the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. What we eat and how much of it we consume has far more impact than exercise and most other habits do on long-term weight gain, according to the study by Harvard University scientists. It’s the most comprehensive look yet at the effect of individual foods and lifestyle choices like sleep time and quitting smoking. The results are in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.

Weight problems are epidemic. Two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past three decades. Pounds often are packed on gradually over decades, and many people struggle to limit weight gain without realizing what’s causing it. The new study finds food choices are key. The message: Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts. Cut back on potatoes, red meat, sweets and soda. “There is no magic bullet for weight control,” said one study leader, Dr. Frank Hu. “Diet and exercise are important for preventing weight gain, but diet clearly plays a bigger role.” Doctors analyzed changes in diet and lifestyle habits of 120,877 people from three long-running medical studies. All were health professionals and not obese at the start. Their weight was measured every four years for up to two decades, and they detailed their diet on questionnaires. On average, participants gained nearly 17 pounds over the 20-year period.

Van Gogh’s “self-portrait” actually his brother: study Agence France Presse

Paintings of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh are hung in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam The Netherlands on June 21.

THE HAGUE – Art researchers at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum said Tuesday they have “discovered” a work by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh — long thought to have been a self-portrait — was in fact a picture of his younger brother Theo. “According to current opinion, Vincent van Gogh never painted his brother Theo, on whom he was dependent,” the Van Gogh Museum said in a statement. But senior researcher Louis van

Tilborgh now believed the 1887 painting of a man wearing a lightcoloured hat and a dark blue jacket was in fact Van Gogh’s brother Theo, Vincent’s junior by five years. “The conclusion is based on a number of obvious differences between the two brothers,” said the museum, pointing out dissimilar features including the neatness of the subject’s beard and his roundshaped ear, “something Vincent did not have.” “The form and colour of Theo’s beard, more ochre than red, is also an indication” as well as the man’s “eye-

colour and the style in which he was dressed supports the new insight,” the museum said. “The portrait matches pictures of Theo,” Van Tilborgh told the Dutch news agency ANP. Theo van Gogh died six months after his older brother shot himself in a wheatfield at the age of 37 in Auvers, France, in July 1890. The new investigation’s results are published in a 600-page catalogue, put together by Van Tilborgh and three other researchers at the museum, which houses the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and letters.

Mexico overcome Honduras to reach Gold Cup final Reuters

HOUSTON - Extra-time goals from Aldo de Nigris and Javier Hernandez gave Mexico a 2-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday, earning them a place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final against the United States. In front of a loud and overwhelmingly Mexican crowd of more than 70,000, ‘El Tri’ were unable to put away their chances in the regulation 90 minutes but made amends during extra-time. “It was tough, Honduras were very well organised, strong and we couldn’t find much space,” Mexico head coach Jose Manuel de la Torre told reporters. “We should have finished it off in regulation but it didn’t work out that way.” Honduras went close themselves to a late winner inside the 90 minutes but Mexico took control in extra-time, producing the clinical finishing that makes the difference. De Nigris produced a superb header to put Mexico ahead in the third minute of extratime, rising to meet a corner from Pablo Barrera. Manchester United forward Hernandez then pounced from close range after another De Nigris header from a corner was pushed out by Honduras keeper Noel Valladares. The goal was the seventh in five games in the tournament for Hernandez, who is also known as “Chicharito” (little pea) and has become a national hero in his homeland. Honduras had Roger Espinoza sent off for a second yellow card with five minutes of extra-time remaining. Espinoza had earlier gone the closest to producing an upset when he unleashed a fierce drive in the 90th

minute from 25 metres, which forced Mexico keeper Alfredo Talavera into a fine save. Before that, Mexico had their chances with Hernandez missing a golden opportunity with a header and more glaringly, Giovani dos Santos dragging a shot wide after being put through clear on goal. In the end though, it was the extra sharpness from Mexico in the additional period that made the difference. “It was like a final, we had to be really focused physically and mentally. The attentiveness we showed in the 90 minutes just wasn’t there in extratime,” Honduras coach Luis Fernando Suarez said. Saturday’s clash at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena will be the third consecutive Gold Cup final featuring the United States and Mexico. While the Americans got their semi-final against Panama resolved inside normal time, the Mexicans will have to recover from an extra 30 minutes. De la Torre, however, said that the extra exertion should not count against them in California. “The team has done well in regeneration... they are tired but are well prepared. We will just have to see how they recover from any knocks picked up,” he said.

Roberto Carlos banana attack alarms Russia Agence France Presse

MOSCOW – Russia’s football authorities vowed to step up the fight against racism Thursday after a fan threw a banana at Roberto Carlos in the latest apparent racial attack on the Brazilian former World Cup winner. Carlos, a defender for revamped Caucasus side Anzhi Makhachkala since February, received a pass from the goalkeeper and was about to pass it when a banana was thrown on to the pitch, landing nearby. The 38-year-old Brazilian picked it up and threw it back, walking off the field before the final whistle and raising two fingers at the stands, indicating this was the second such incident since March. Both Anzhi and their hosts — Krylya Sovetov of the Volga city of Samara — denounced the insult and

vowed to find the culprit. “The stadium is no place for racism,” Anzhi said in a statement after the match, demanding that the fan be identified and punished. It is the second such incident in a matter of months. In March a fan was pictured holding the fruit out to Carlos during a game against Zenit Saint Petersburg. Zenit was fined 300,000 roubles ($10,700) and banned the fan from its games. Carlos has proved a huge success after signing for the Dagestan outfit in February in a late-career move, inspiring the previously marginal team to fourth in the Russian Premier League so far this season. He has also charmed the Russian public, in football and outside, with his usually smiling demeanour and an apparent genuine interest in the country.

Santos edge Penarol to claim Libertadores Cup Reuters

BUENOS AIRES - Santos were crowned champions of South America for the third time after goals from teenagers Neymar and Danilo gave them a 2-1 win over Penarol in the second leg of the Libertadores Cup final on Wednesday. The Brazilians, also champions in 1962 and 1963, clinched the title with victory over their Uruguayan opponents at the Pacaembu in Sao Paulo after holding the fivetimes winners to a scoreless draw

in the first leg in Montevideo last week. “I think I deserved this championship,” Santos coach Muricy Ramalho, who failed to win it with Sao Paulo, Sao Caetano and Fluminense, told reporters on the pitch. “I’ve been trying for many years and I believe Santos deserved it too.” Ugly scenes erupted at the final whistle, however, as players, both benches and fans who found their way onto the pitch staged a full-scale brawl, repeating the spectre of violence that marred earlier

finals. “That’s something (that comes) from those you don’t like losing,” Neymar told reporters. Santos succeeded fellow Brazilians Internacional as South American champions and earned a place in the Club World Cup in December. Pele, who inspired Santos to their first two titles in his 1960s heyday, went onto the pitch at the end to embrace Ramalho and Santos players. “Neymar is very talented and he did not have a good first half because Penarol have a good defence,” Pele said. The gifted 19year-old, regarded by many as a capable heir to Pele for Santos and Brazil, broke the deadlock less than two minutes into the second half. Indefatigable midfielder Arouca exchanged passes with playmaker Ganso and rode several tackles on a run across the edge of the box before feedong the ball to Neymar, who hit a low shot under goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa. Danilo doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, racing into the box from the right onto a pass by Elano before steering a fine, low left-footed shot past Sosa just inside the far post. Battling Penarol, who won the last of their five titles in 1987, got back into the contest 10 minutes later via an own goal by central defender Durval, whose attempt to block a cross lobbed up over goalkeeper Rafael into the net.

Cavs have options, starting with Irving at No. 1 Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – In an NBA draft with plenty of questions, Kyrie Irving says his health isn’t one of them. Irving has long been considered the top pick, though the Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t said they will choose him with their No. 1 selection. And if they are wavering because of that toe injury on his right foot that limited the Duke point guard to 11 games in his lone college season, he insists there’s no reason to worry. “If I had concerns about my foot, I wouldn’t have done everything I did at the combine and the workout,” Irving said Wednesday. “I don’t feel like there’s any more questions about my toe or my health. If the Cavs are just as convinced, Irving’s name will be the first called by NBA Commissioner David Stern on Thursday at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. And if they aren’t sure, here’s some advice for what to do with their two high picks. Take Irving first, grab Turkish big man Enes Kanter fourth, and start enjoying the postseason success you used to have when LeBron James was around. “If I play with Kyrie, I believe we can make playoffs,” Kanter said. “I know we can make playoffs.” Or instead, pass on Irving and go with Arizona’s Derrick Williams, who can play inside or out, either forward spot, and would bring the mixture of power and athleticism back to your frontcourt that was lost when James left. “I feel like I am the most overall ready in this spot by my size and ready to make an impact,” Williams said. Even in what’s considered a less-than-stellar NBA draft, the Cavaliers have plenty of options as they become the first team since the 1983 Houston Rockets with two picks in the top four. They’re expected to start with Irving, considered the favorite since the Cavaliers won the lottery last month. Though he spent most of his college career on the sideline, the numbers he put in his limited time seem too good to pass up. “It definitely feels good, you know, knowing that I’m still projected to go No. 1,” Irving said. “We’ll see how it goes tomorrow, but it’s an honor to be at the No. 1 spot right now.” The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 17.5 points while shooting 53 percent from the floor, 46 percent from 3-point range and 90 percent from the foul line. He returned from his injury in time to play in the NCAA tournament — where his Blue Devils were overwhelmed by Williams in Arizona’s round of 16 victory — and he said that proves there should be no question about his health. “Playing in the NCAA tournament was the deciding factor for me,” Irving said. “If I didn’t play in the NCAA tournament, I would have been back at Duke for my sophomore season. I just wanted to kind of limit all the questions on my health and durability.” The Cavaliers also pick fourth — the No. 1 pick was acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers last season in the Baron Davis trade — giving them the ability to add a big man, perhaps Kanter or another from the lengthy list of Europeans available, if they selected Irving first.

Venus Williams of the US in action during the match against Japan’s Kimiko Date-Krumm at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, Wednesday, June 22, 2011.

Williams relies on experience to pull through Associated Press Writer

WIMBLEDON, England – After 15 years of coming to the All England Club, Venus Williams knows what it takes to pull out a tough match on the biggest stage in tennis. Even though she only returned to tournament play last week after a five-month layoff with a hip injury, the 31-year-old Williams summoned all her experience and big-point savvy to rally for a threeset Centre Court victory that kept her in contention for a sixth Wimbledon title. “In terms of feeling age, I definitely feel the experience of it all, and I think that’s huge for me,” Williams said after overcoming 40year-old Japanese player Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-7 (6), 6-3, 8-6 in nearly three hours on Wednesday to move into the third round. “The experience is very important on the court, because that’s what really gets you to the win besides the skill and everything else. If anything, that’s definitely an advantage.” In a match played with rain pelting the roof over Centre Court, Williams was down 5-1 in the first set before fighting her way back against a gritty opponent who pushed her around the court. The first set lasted 65 minutes, the third went 69 minutes. Overall, the match took 2 hours, 56 minutes. By comparison, Williams won her first match against Akgul

Amanmuradova on Monday in 59 minutes. Williams came up with big serves when she needed it against Date-Krumm, the second oldest woman to reach the second round here in the Open era after Martina Navratilova. “More than anything I’ve learned I’m very competitive,” Williams said. “Just no matter what the score, very positive. Just keep fighting.” It was the first time the two players — who have a combined age of 71 — have met in their long careers. The 57th-ranked Date-Krumm was a throwback Wednesday, hitting flat groundstrokes and sneaking into the net whenever she could for soft drop volleys. “She just played unbelievable today,” Williams said. “I just thought today was a perfect storm for her to try to get a win. Thankfully, I had some answers.” Date-Krumm made her Wimbledon debut in 1989, reached the semifinals in 1996 and retired later that year until her return in 2008. “I played my tennis and (showed) I can fight with Venus also,” she said. “She’s a five-time champion here. She’s a great

player. So I can fight with her. It was a very, very good match for me.” Williams is in the opposite half of the draw from her sister Serena, a four-time champion who sobbed with relief after winning her firstround match on Tuesday in her return to Grand Slam tennis after nearly a year out with health problems. “I think she showed that once you’re a champion, you’re always a champion,” Venus said of her younger sibling. “Regardless of what happened to her off the court, she still believes in herself. ... I don’t think anybody else will ever understand what she’s been through.” The tournament is about a dozen matches behind schedule due to rain delays, with more showers forecast Thursday. Play on Centre Court is guaranteed because of the roof, meaning fifth-seeded Robin Soderling will lead off Thursday against 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitt. They will be followed by French Open champion Li Na of China against Sabine Lisicki and sixtime winner Roger Federer against Adrian Mannarino of France.

Trulli frustrated by steering issues JARNO Trulli insists he will not be able to perform strongly this year unless Team Lotus solves the problems with his car’s power steering. Trulli has complained several times that Lotus’s power steering does not give him enough feedback when driving, thus making it hard for the Italian to extract the best from his car. The Lotus driver also said he was expecting his team to be strong enough to fight in the midfield this year. “These are not good times for me: the car is not efficient in its aerodynamics. After a 2010 of settling in, I was expecting to be fighting in the middle of the pack, instead we are always at the back. Lotus is still building up experience,” Trulli was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. “The real problem is with the power steering, because it carries on troubling me. If I don’t have clear feedback from the steering, as is always the case nowadays, I can’t adapt: my driving is very precise and I can’t make up for it nor I can feel the limit. It’s like driving blindfolded. “Kovalainen, instead, doesn’t have these problems, so he goes quicker than me. In qualifying I can never bring out the best, while I do well at race starts, when the car is heavy because of the fuel load. But when it gets lighter it’s trouble for me.” The Italian, whose contract with Lotus ends this year, suggested he is ready to leave Formula 1 if he can’t find a competitive seat. “I want to see how things evolve,” he added. “I’m used to fighting for the podium, for victory. It’s tough this way. I could have a look around and leave F1, without quitting racing. “I’m not interested in Indy, while endurance racing like the 24 Hours of Le Mans maybe yes, with a strong team. But I’m not thinking about it now, I want to keep my mind clear. Then we’ll see.”
