He also admitted have tried to suggest it to government through Education, Youth and Sports Agency (Disdikpora) local office also to Klungkung’s from two years ago yet still no serious responds.

The situation was also confirmed by Suana resident, Widana. He said if seen from the building, it is still well because it got repaired.

“Only the chairs and tables that are many damaged. Government has to be responsible,” he stated while explaining the school has quite a lot of pupils.

Tanah Lot Tariff Increase 200 Percent

A total of 64,573 Bali cows have been sold to other regions during the period of 2011. Bali Animal Husbandry Services stated that quota of inter-island cow trade increased 2,573 from the original quota in 2010 reaching 62,000. The quota was expected to meet the need in a year.

“So far, Bali cow is sold outside to meet the needs of several regions such as Jakarta, West Java and East Kalimantan with delivery set at the average number of 4,600 every month,” said the Head of Bali Animal Husbandry Services, Putu Sumantra, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Jun 14).

He said that Bali during 2010 sent 72,000 cows through inter-islands trade from the original quota amounting to 62,000. Then, Bali was given additional quota of 10,000. Meanwhile, the current population of cow in Bali was recorded to reach 675,419 within the past five years, increased by an average of 3.41 percent annually.

“We hope the need for inter-island cow trade throughout 2011 can be met without increasing the quota,” he said.

In relation to the export termination from Australia to Indonesia, Putu Sumantra recognized it did not have an impact on the Bali market. Live cows from Australia were generally sent to Lampung, West Java and Jakarta. When Australia discontinued the exports of live cow to Indonesia it would only affect the delays of meat supply from Jakarta to Bali.

Based on data in 2010, the beef demand in Bali reached 600 tons per year. Meanwhile, the need of imported beef from Australia only reached 64.8 tons per year. The demand for imported beef was only around 15-20 percent of the total Bali’s beef demand. “Animal Husbandry Services have already allocated the cow slaughter to meet the local need reaching 38,000 per year.

local beef to cover the shortage of beef from Jakarta due to termination of Australian beef exports to Indonesia,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Province involved 1,300 officers to conduct a cow and buffalo census in Bali.

These officers were assigned to record the population in eight regencies and one city in Bali.

Data collection of cow and buffalo population, according to the Head of BPS Bali, Gede Suarsa, posed an endeavor to support Indonesia to reach self-sufficiency in meat demand in 2014. “We want to know in details about the availability of beef cattle to satisfy the needs of community, hotels and restaurants in Bali, including the inter-island commodities,” he explained. Fuel scarcity at station makes a ‘blessing in disguise’ for retailers Singaraja (Bali Post)—

A number of petrol stations in Singaraja and the surrounding areas ran out of fuel stock on Tuesday (Jun 14) morning. Of the five petrol stations in Singaraja and the surrounding areas, only one petrol station located on Jalan Ahmad Yani apparently still had a stock of fuel, while four others had run out.

Observation made on Tuesday showed that a petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani was thronged by residents who wanted to get fuel. A long queue of vehicles was unavoidable. To prevent traffic congestion, the Traffic Unit of Buleleng Police officers were on guard in front of the station downtown Singaraja. Meanwhile, four other petrol stations seemed deserted. Their officers were still waiting for fuel delivery from the depot at Manggis, Karangasem.

Uniquely, in the midst of fuel scarcity there were many instant

retailers found at roadside in Singaraja. Even, many retailers sold their fuel around the petrol stations that had run out of stock.

According to one of the retailers, when stations ran out of fuel stock, it was the opportunity for retailers to sell fuel more than on usual days. To suffice fuel stock, the retailer admitted to purchase it at stations that had a pretty much stock. “If the city runs out of stock, I usually purchase in Seririt or other stations on the outskirts of Singaraja,” said one of the retailers. Minimalist, Sarbagita bus shelter reaps complaints Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Operation plan of Sarbagita transportation system using a bus in Denpasar is highlighted again.

Other than the plan was never realized, the supporting facilities are also considered to have ignored the indigenous wisdom. It can be seen from the construction of two bus shelters located on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Padanggalak Sanur. In terms of design, it does not reflect the elements of Balinese culture.

This was conveyed by legislators of Denpasar House, I Kadek Ari Sucita and Eko Supriadi, in their office on Tuesday (Jun 16).

“The bus shelter of Trans Sarbagita on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai looks to ignore the Balinese ornaments. This really hurts the culture-based city of Denpasar,” said Ari Sucita.

Aside from the matter of ornament, this people’s representative from Kesiman Kertalangu also highlighted the location that it was built on sidewalk. He was worried when the bus discharged and took passenger would have an impact on congestion behind it. “The builder did not take into account the amount of land required for the bus stopover,” he explained.

In line with Ari Sucita, Eko Supriadi also deplored the Bali

Government building the supporting facilities of Trans-Sarbagita did not make coordination with Denpasar Municipality. “This means, Denpasar only get the garbage. People will not know who built the bus shelter,” said people’s representative of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

Both people’s representatives judged the development of bus shelter along the Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai should consider the space to stop for Sarbagita bus. In other words, when the bus stopped, it should not obstruct the speed of vehicles behind it. “Ideally, the bus shelter was made at a little distance from the sidewalk so there is enough space left for bus to stop, without obstructing the movement of other vehicles,” said Ari Sucita.

Other than the members of Denpasar House, the Head of Urban Planning and Housing Services, I Made Kusuma Diputra, also claimed to be surprised to see the bus shelter mentioned. Supposedly, it should be founded by still adopting the architectural procedures of building on main road that implemented Balinese ornamental styles. “I was also surprised to see the shelter was established quickly.

Levee breaches threaten residents along Missouri River Reuters

Contractors have been raising the secondary levee by several feet near Hamburg, while a secondary levee has limited flooding from another levee breach 45 miles to the south in Big Lake, Missouri, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said.

“Right now, we are still dry,” Hamburg Fire Chief Dan Sturm said in a telephone interview on Tuesday.

“But the water will encroach on the town within 24 hours.”

BENGHAZI, Libya – Two powerful explosions shook Tripoli following a threeday pause in NATO air raids, as rebels made advances against forces loyal to Moamer Kadhafi by taking a village southwest of the Libyan capital.

The rebels seized Al-Rayaniya, a village east of the heavily fought-over hilltown of Zintan in the mainly Berber Nafusa mountains, southwest of Tripoli, an AFP correspondent reported. The village of some 10,000 residents is located on a strategic route connecting Zintan and Yefren, two towns rebels hope to wrest from forces loyal to Moamer Kadhafi.

Pro-Kadhafi forces, however, continue to bomb the town with Grad rockets. Two rebels were killed in the fighting and about a dozen wounded. In Tripoli, blasts were heard around 11:30 pm (2130 GMT), and witnesses reported seeing black smoke ris-

ing from a site close to downtown.

Libya’s official agency Jana reported that civilian sites in the Al-Ferjan district had been the target of NATO, the “colonialist, crusader aggressor,” and that the attacks had set civilian homes on fire. Several people had been injured it added, without elaborating.

The Libyan capital and its suburbs have been the target of almost daily NATO air raids since it started its military operation on March 31, a month after the uprising against Kadhafi.

In Washington, US politicians grew impatient with the pace of operations: Republican US House Speaker John Boehner gave Obama until Friday to ask Congress to authorize military action “or withdraws all US troops and resources from the mission.”

Boehner warned Obama that the administration may fall afoul, as of Sunday, of a 90-day deadline set by the 1973 War Powers Act aimed at curtailing US presidents’ ability to deploy the military overseas.

BANGKOK – U.S. diplomats concluded as early as 2009 that the surprise front-runner to become Thailand’s next prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, had a “bright future” despite a low profile in the shadow of her famous brother’s troubles.

Then-Ambassador to Thailand Eric John characterized the youngest sister of billionaire fugitive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a Nov. 25, 2009, diplomatic cable as “far more poised” than in past meetings. He noted that she spoke with confidence about the “operations, strategy and goals” of the pro-Thaksin Pheu Thai Party, with which she held no official leadership position at the time.

A Thaksin confidante who accompanied her to a meeting with John even joked that he was dealing with Thailand’s next prime minister, the cable said.

Other embassy cables contain compliments for Yingluck’s rival in next month’s election, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva,

who faced down repeated and sometimes violent challenges to his government by Thaksin’s supporters.

John’s evaluation was in one of more than 2,000 American diplomatic cables from Thailand that were leaked to the WikiLeaks organization and subsequently obtained by The Associated Press.

Yingluck is the top candidate of the Pheu Thai Party on the so-called party list, a ballot by party preference in the July 3 general election. The candidate listed first is traditionally that party’s candidate to become prime minister, which could make Yingluck the country’s first female leader.

There had been speculation that she could be tarred by association with Thaksin, who was ousted by a military coup in 2006 after being accused of corruption and disrespect to Thailand’s revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Thaksin’s critics blame him for protests by his supporters last year that culminated last year with street battles in Bangkok in which about 90 people were killed and 1,800 wounded.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali.

There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

“It is possible there will be a return to increased eruptive activity” of the Puyehue volcano in southern Chile’s Andes mountains, which started belching fumes on June 4, Chile’s National Geological and Mines Service said late Tuesday.

It said it was detecting no letup in the volcano’s emissions, which were towering eight kilometers (five miles) into the troposhpere. It maintained its alert level at “moderate eruption.”

That was bad news for airlines flying into or over Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and — half a world away — Australia. Passengers in those regions have had to ditch aircraft for travel by boat or overland, or cancel plans entirely.

PARIS – French lawmakers on Tuesday rejected a bill presented by the opposition Socialist Party seeking to legalize same-sex marriage, despite growing public support for gay rights.

The vote reflected opposition to gay marriage among President Nicolas Sarkozy’s governing conservatives and the strain of traditional values that runs through many parts of France — away from the gay-friendly bars and neighborhoods of Paris.

The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, turned down the measure by 293 votes to 222. Opposition was led by Sarkozy’s UMP, while Socialists and other leftists supported the bill, which said “marriage can be contracted by two people of different sexes or of the same sex.”

Judges in Ba‘asyir‘s court trials receive threats Antara

JAKARTA - Police said the judges handling the case of Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba‘asyir had received short text messages (SMS) containing threats from unidentified persons.

“We will therefore take measures to ensure the security of the judges,” Jakarta Metropolitan Police chief Inspector General Sutarman said here on Wednesday.

He said the police would provide security for the judges before they convene to announce their verdict on Ba‘asyir who is being tried on the charge of financing terrorist activity.

The police were not as yet able to confirm the truth of the messages but they would remain alert and take anticipatory measures while continuing efforts to trace the

sender.

To support the smooth implementation of the court session Sutarman said he had ordered his police command to deploy officers optimally.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command plans to deploy 3,446 personnel including snipers to secure the session, court personnel as well as the defendant.

It has even coordinated with police commands of other regions to blockade Ba‘asyir‘s supporters crossing regional borders.

The police will also tighten se-

curity in the court area by checking visitors.

Abu Bakar Ba‘asyir, the chief of the Jamaah Ansharut Tauhid, is facing a ruling on his alleged involvement in terrorism at the South Jakarta District Court on Thursday (June 16).

To prevent any eventuality the court meanwhile has issued special identity cards for journalists covering the event. The policy has been taken following coordination with the police, court official Sair said here on Wednesday.

He said the court had prepared 200 IDs and newsmen could take them in exchange for their press cards before the session began.

He said the measure was taken also for selecting journalists with clear identities.

RI, Philippines to step up border security efforts Antara

“We are now trying to trace the sender of the SMS with the help of members of our cyber crime unit,” Sr Com Baharudin Djafar, head of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police`s public relations bureau, said here Tuesday.

Sports Minister, FIFA VP discuss PSSI congress Antara

JAKARTA - Youth and Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng held a meeting with FIFA Vice President Prince Ali bin Al Hussein here Tuesday to discuss issues affecting Indonesian football and the upcoming congress of PSSI (Indonesian Football Association).

“I and Prince Ali exchanged views. A lot of things were discussed. And the main thing was about the upcoming PSSI congress preparations for which have not yet been completed,” Minister Mallarangeng said after the meeting with the FIFA vice president.

by Rita Subowo, chairperson of KONI/KOI (Indonesian Sports Committee).

Prince Ali, according to the minister, expressed his hope that the congress could run smoothly and would be able to elect a new PSSI chairman and vice chairman as well as new members of the PSSI Executive Committee for the 2011-2015 periods.

The FIFI vice president also hoped that at the upcoming congress, PSSI would be able to open a new chapter so that PSSI would not get a sanction from FIFA, the minister said.

“We thank the FIFA vice president for his great attention to the conditions of football in Indone-

sia,” Mallarangeng said.

He and Prince Ali also discussed FIFA programs such as Gold Program that will be applied in Indonesia.

“We discussed many issues. For sure the objective is to improve the performance of Indonesia`s football,” the minister said.

Prince Ali is also scheduled to meet Vice President Boediono, Army Chief of Staff George Toisutta, and the Normalization Committee‘s chairman and members.

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) Vice President Prince Ali bin Al Hussein is on a visit here on June 13-14, 2011.

FIFA had recently decided to form a Normalization Committee that would take over the task of organizing a congress from the PSSI‘s executive board to elect a new PSSI chairman, deputy chairman and executive committee on May 20, 2011.

FIFA took the decision after its Emergency Committee believed that the PSSI leadership under chairman Nurdin Khalid was not in control of football in Indonesia as proven by its failure to control the run-away league (Liga Premiere/LPI) set up without the involvement of PSSI or by the fact it could not organize a peaceful congress aimed at adopting an electoral code and electing an electoral commission.

minimalist or a large-scale building.

“Commitment to maintain the Balinese architectural ornament on buildings in Denpasar is quite positive. Moreover, the nature and characteristics of Balinese architectural ornament can be applied on every single building. Do not deny the existence of indigenous wisdom,” said a member of Commission B of Denpasar House.

Suadi Putra added the endeavor to preserve Balinese nuances on buildings in the region and strategic roads was very important to do by the ranks of government. More-

over, cultural potential owned by the Island of a Thousand Temples was also very dependent on the buildings existing in Bali. “If no more efforts undertaken to maintain the character of Balinese ornament on buildings, I’m afraid Bali will no longer have typical characteristic and attraction,” said the young architect from Sidakarya.

It was added, the appearance of buildings without adopting the characteristics of Bali was inseparable from supervision carried out.

Relevant agencies should do it since the beginning of the building construction in Denpasar. It was not too difficult to incorporate the Balinese elements on each building. He pointed out that a shopping center at Dewa Ruci junction, namely Bali Galleria, had been able to adopt Balinese architecture on its building. Similarly, the building of Bank

Mandiri on Jalan Diponegoro successfully adopted the typical characteristics of Bali though they were applied in modern concept. It meant that to implement and maintain buildings characterizing the concept of Balinese architecture were not too difficult provided that supervision undertaken by relevant agencies was effective.

Meanwhile, the Head of Denpasar Urban Planning and Housing Services, I Made Kusuma Diputra, said his party had possessed regulations concerning with Balinese architecture. Even, the permit of some buildings neglecting the concept of Balinese architecture was denied. “In Denpasar, all buildings have been overseen. Perhaps, the buildings mentioned are in Badung region, so we do not know about it,” he said. (kmb12)

Joged still attract audiences DENPASAR – Joged is always attracting the attention of the audiences. This situation can be seen during a jogged performance in the 33rd Bali Art festival (BAF) which is being held in Art Center, Denpasar.

The Werdi Bhuana Sari art group from Jimbaran, southern Kuta was performing jogged bumbung on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 in Kalangan Ayodya. The place was crowded with audiences who wanted to watch the beautiful

jogged dance. Not only the locals but foreign tourists were also curious in watching the dance.

Some of the foreigners even invited to the stage and dance with the dancers. The audiences laughed hilariously after they saw the way

the foreigners dance. Five dancers performed yesterday were able to astound the audiences.

During this year’s BAF, the format of the jogged performance is change from two show at one time become only one. The Head of Werdi Bhuana Sari art group, I Wayan Tonik, said that the art group has been preparing the performance in the BAF for a year.

“Our art group was established in 1978 but not carry out any activities for a while now. The art group begins to resurrect last year.

This is because the effort of the government who always support us,” he added.

History of Bali Arts Festival Bali Arts Festival (BAF) is organized as an effort to offer the best creative art works of the community. Though community now would like to choose between the arts and crafts, profane and secular, ordered work and pure creativity of the Balinese people, they do them with the spirits of devotional service. The difference is not going to reduce the essence of the arts. Such art activities are based on the motivation as the best devotional service and the ‘spirit’ in all activities of the Balinese.

The art presented is devotion and creative works produced as devotion. Performance of the arts implies sincere freedom and in Hinduism it is often referred to as Yajña. It is presented through the arts and creative works as a sacrifice to make the best creations. On that account, the artists will attempt to stage their best works, let alone the offerings are born from the cultivation as the upstream of love affection and spiritual civilization of the community.

Bali Arts Festival poses a medium to discover and preserve the arts and culture as well as increase the people’s prosperity. Cultural discovery and preservation included the philosophy, sublime and universal values, basic concepts, both material and immaterial cultural heritage having high historical value, science and art as a representation of civilization and development of the arts through creation, innovation and cultural adaptation.

Hopefully, they can survive and last sustainably in the context of the ever-changing times and environment.

To accommodate the proceeds of art creation, artistic aspirations as the result of art reconstruction, innovative art, arts attraction and art appreciation, Bali Provincial Government through the aspiration of the late Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra initiated a medium for people’s art fiesta in 1979. Later on, it is better known as the Bali Arts Festival (BAF).

Legal basis of the Bali Arts Festival implementation is the Bali Regional Regulation No. 07/986 concerning with the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). It was first held in 1979 and lasted for some 2 months right from June 20, 1979 through August 23, 1979. It has given the opportunity to showcase the best works of art as well as a means for preservation and development of arts and culture each year. Cultural preservation features classical arts that are on the verge of extinction and nearly forgotten by the community.

Bali Arts Festival itself has motivated people to explore, discover and display the arts to the public through this people’s party. Implementation of BAF through the years has provided distinctive nuances to the sustainability of Balinese culture with the presentation of everchanging themes. Similarly, the

1 lb. eggplant 4 Tbs. vegetable oil 1 Tbs. shallots 1 clove garlic, sliced ½ cup water 1 Tbs. sweet soy sauce ½ tsp. pepper ¼ tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. vinegar ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar

Directions Cut the unpeeled eggplant into ½-inch-thick slices, and then cut the slices in half. Fry lightly in 2 Tbs. of oil for 2 minutes, or until light brown and softened. Set aside.

Stir fry the shallots and garlic in the remaining oil until light brown. Add the water, sweet aoy sauce, pepper, nutmeg, vinegar, salt and sugar. Let all of these ingredients cook for approximately 3 minutes to prepare the sauce.

Directions Did my first cooking out of my new Indonesian cookbook last night. I fixed a stir fried carrot dish to back up a pork/soy stew (originally posted by Jen Kuiper) and plain white rice. Both are very easy to fix and quite good. Here’s the particulars.

These are carrots, cut into matchsticks and cooked in a little oil or butter. The word wortel doesn’t sound Indonesian and isn’t. It is borrowed from the Dutch name for the carrot, since it was the Dutch who introduced this vegetable to Indonesia.

Peel, wash, and cut the carrots into small sticks.

Slice the shallots and chilli. Crush the garlic. In a wok, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or clarified butter.

Saute the slice shallots and chilli for 1 minute, then add the garlic and the carrots. Stir continuously for a minute or so and then put in the stock, or soya sauce and water. Cover and continue to cook for 4 minutes.

BUSINESS Trouble brews over second Greece bailout Agence France-Presse

BRUSSELS – Trouble was brewing Wednesday over plans for a second bailout of Greece, as a bid to press money markets into contributing with European governments dramatically raised the odds of a default.

As the eurozone battle to avoid Athens going bankrupt hurtles towards an early-July repayments crunch, six-anda-half hours of talks in Brussels ended in stalemate with ministers called to try again on Sunday in Luxembourg.

“The larger the private involvement, the bigger the risks of contagion,” said Ivan Miklos of Slovakia as he left tbe late-night Tuesday talks in Brussels.

Despite hints of an emerging deal for a new 105-billion-euro-plus Greek financial rescue, ministers failed to clear the main obstacle — persuading private investors to chip in one third of the bailout.

Germany and its allies thought that aim could be achieved by banks “voluntarily” accepting new delays on the collection of old debts over the coming months, instead of getting their money back from Athens as guaranteed by government contracts.

It is now doubtful, though; that a deal to avert a new financial crisis can be concluded as initially promised, when European Union leaders gather for their June 23-24 summit.

The chairman of the 17-nation currency Eurogroup, Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, said it was a case of trying again on Sunday and Monday in his home town.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and France’s Christine Lagarde, whose government has sided more with the ECB, also batted away questions and even the Greeks left with a “no comment.”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned it will not cough up its share of a 12-billion-euro tranche of last year’s 110-billion-euro Greece bailout No. 1 without new money from partners.

Juncker’s finance minister, Luc Frieden, said “the goal is really to have a solution by the end of this month.

“I’m not sure that we’ll find a solution next week, but within the next two weeks,” he added.

Germany and the ECB disagree over how much to ask banks, pension funds and insurers to stump up by way of a “rollover” or any more radical restructuring of Greece’s 350-billioneuro ($500 billion) debt mountain.

“It’s not only Germany and the ECB,” Frieden said when asked if the main protagonists had patched up their differences. Greece’s debts equate to more than what its entire economy produces in 18 months. The ECB fears that forcing private investors to help out could see the credit ratings agencies deem Athens to be in default, a huge risk for the eurozone.

Standard & Poor’s on Monday slashed Greece’s credit rating to the lowest in the world — sending the yield on 10-year Greek bonds spinning to a record high of 17.175 percent as the talks began.

Incoming ECB chief, Italy’s Mario Draghi, said beforehand that putting a country into administration was far more unpredictable even than dealing with a busted bank’s balance sheet.

“We know how to manage the bankruptcy of a company, we have just learned — and I am not sure learned completely — how to manage the default of a bank... We haven’t yet learned how to manage a sovereign default,” he told the European Parliament.

Belgium’s Didier Reynders has said the latest plan would need more than 80 billion euros of international funding and Greek state sell-offs, plus another 25 billion from the private sector.

Reynders, who is often a reliable guide to negotiations throughout a debt crisis that has also seen Ireland and Portugal need bailouts, said banks had to “maintain their exposure to Greek debt over the next few years.”

But even before Tuesday’s talks began London-based Capital Economics said it had lost confidence in the policymakers’ capacity to act.

“We are far from convinced and still expect a major default to take place eventually,” their analysts said.

Oil prices hovered around $99 a barrel after a report showed U.S. crude inventories fell more than expected, suggesting demand may be improving. The dollar was up against the euro and unchanged against the yen.

In early European trading, Britain’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.2 percent to 5,788.97. Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC-40 each lost 0.3 percent. Wall Street was set to head lower, with Dow Jones industrial futures and S&P futures both down 0.5 percent.

Asian shares fared only slighter better.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 0.7 percent to 22,343.77.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.4 percent to 4,566.80. Benchmarks in Singapore and Thailand

were also down, while those in Taiwan and New Zealand rose.

China’s May’s inflation rate of 5.5 percent was the highest since July 2008. Beijing has made taming price increases a priority but its measures could also slow growth in the world’s secondlargest economy.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.9 percent to 2,705.43, while the Shenzhen Composite Index of China also fell 0.9 percent to 1,118.17.

Shares in Inner Mongolia companies were among the gainers, while shipping industry companies weakened.

Inflation is also buffeting India’s economy, the third largest in Asia. The Reserve Bank of India, which has raised key policy rates nine times since March 2010 in an effort to tame inflation, is expected to raise borrowing costs again at a monetary policy review Thursday.

ISTANBUL – Turkey says Angelina Jolie wants to visit Syrian refugees who have fled violence and are camped out on the Turkish side of the border.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Selcuk Unal said Wednesday that an application to visit the refugees has been made on behalf of

the Hollywood celebrity and goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

Unal says the application is being assessed. Turkey says more than 8,500 Syrians have fled to Turkey to escape a crackdown on an antigovernment uprising. In April, Jolie traveled to Tunisia during its refugee crisis as thousands fled from its war-torn neighbor, Libya.

Christina Aguilera joins Maroon 5 on new single Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES – Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine of NBC’s talent show “The Voice” are putting their voices together on a new Maroon 5 single. Aguilera is featured with Levine and his band on the tune “Moves Like Jagger,” which will be released next week on iTunes.

They’ll perform the song on the June 21 episode of “The Voice,” airing 9-11 p.m. EDT. The studio version will be available to buy online following the show, NBC announced Tuesday during this week’s episode.

The track was recorded last month in Los Angeles, Levine said in a statement, adding that it was “great” getting to work with Aguilera. The song was described as quintessential Maroon 5 power pop, with an upbeat tune.

Aguilera called the collaboration a “wonderful opportunity.” Levine and Aguilera, along with Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton, are coaches on “The Voice,” which awards the winning singer a record contract and a $100,000 prize.

Kisses, hugs for Taymor as ‘Spider-Man’ opens Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK – The scene would have been hard to imagine three months ago, when Julie Taymor was pushed aside as director of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” an unprecedentedly expensive production whose well-publicized troubles had already made it the butt of late-night jokes.

But there was Taymor returning Tuesday for the long-postponed opening night. She got a huge ovation and chants of “Julie, Julie” as she was welcomed onstage to kisses and hugs from Bono and the Edge — collaborators who’d brought her into the project years ago, but later played a role in her ouster from the $70 million production.

“I just want to thank everybody, especially the cast and crew, the musicians and this creative team that I got to work with for a long time,” the Tony Award-winning director said to a crowd sprinkled liberally with celebrities, including Bill Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea, Jay-Z, John McEnroe, Spike Lee, Vanessa Redgrave, Steve Martin and Matt Damon.

Earlier, just before showtime, Taymor told The Associated Press: “I’m delighted to be here. I’m excited. It’s opening night!”

Of course, there was no word on how she felt about the extensively

retooled version that had taken shape following her ouster. The revamp dispensed with much of her vision but retained some of her most striking concepts.

But there was unity and affection on the stage of the Foxwoods Theatre, where the show had played a record-setting 183 previews before finally opening Tuesday. Bono even told Taymor she was looking “hot.”

Then he thanked the audience for its patience.

“We had to save Spider-Man,” said the U2 singer, “because SpiderMan has to save New York.” Afterward, at the stage door, cast members were ebullient and relieved.

“The biggest lesson I learned from this whole process is never to give up,” said Reeve Carney, who plays Peter Parker. “There were many opportunities along the way for many of us to quit, but none of us did.”

And as for Taymor’s return? “It was so great — it was like having

your parents reunite,” said Carney. He said he hadn’t been able yet to ask Taymor what she thought of the revised show; she did not appear with the cast at the stage door.

Thought the script was much simplified in the new version — Taymor had co-written the original script with Glen Berger — a number of her signature touches were clearly in evidence. The mythical character she’d introduced to the story, Arachne, was one of the first to appear, and a visual effect that has swaths of saffron silk being woven under her got applause all on its own.

T.V. Carpio, who plays Arachne, said Taymor’s return “was so emotional — I was trying not to cry.” And Jennifer Damiano, who plays Mary Jane Watson, said it was “really special” to have the original director back.

The actors expressed delight that they’d finally reached a point where they simply had a show to perform every week, instead of endless rehearsals and constant changes. “I’m really looking forward to just performing the show every night,” said Damiano.

Added Patrick Page, who plays Norman Osborn and the villain he turns into, Green Goblin: “We invited everyone this time, so it’s, `Come to our party — here’s our work,” said Page.

Scientists predict rare ‘hibernation’ of sunspots Agence France Presse

WASHINGTON – US scientists say the familiar sunspot cycle seems to be entering a hibernation period unseen since the 17th century, a pattern that could have a slight cooling effect on global temperatures.

For years, scientists have been predicting the Sun would by around 2012 move into solar maximum, a period of intense flares and sunspot activity, but lately a curious calm has suggested quite the opposite.

The signs include a missing jet stream, fading spots and slower activity near the poles, said a trio of studies presented Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s Solar Physics Division in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

“This is highly unusual and unexpected,” said Frank Hill, associate director of the National Solar Observatory’s Solar Synoptic Network. “But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation.”

Solar activity tends to rise and fall every 11 years or so. The solar maximum and solar minimum each mark about half the interval of the magnetic pole reversal on the Sun,

which happens every 22 years.

Experts are now probing whether this period of inactivity could be a second Maunder Minimum, a 70-year period when hardly any sunspots were observed between 1645-1715 known as the “Little Ice Age.” “If we are right, this could be the last solar maximum we’ll see for a few decades. That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth’s climate,” said Hill. Solar flares and eruptions can send highly charged particles hurtling toward Earth and interfere with satellite communications, GPS systems and even airline controls.

Geomagnetic forces have been known to occasionally garble the world’s modern gadgetry, and warnings were issued as recently as last week when a moderate solar flare sent a fiery coronal mass ejection in the Earth’s direction.

spot activity would likely be minimal and not enough to offset the impact of greenhouse gases on global warming, according to scientists.

“Recent solar 11-year cycles are associated empirically with changes

in global surface temperature of 0.1 Celsius,” said Judith Lean, a solar physicist with the US Naval Research Laboratory.

If the cycle were to stop or slow down, the small fluctuation in tem-

perature would do the same, eliminating the slightly cooler effect of a solar minimum compared to the warmer solar maximum. The phenomenon was witnessed during the descending phase of the last solar cycle.

NEW YORK - People who spend more hours in front of the television are at greater risk of dying, or developing diabetes and heart disease, with even two hours of television a day having a marked effect, according to a U.S. study.

Every day, U.S. residents spend an average of 5 hours watching television, while Australians and some Europeans log 3.5 to 4 hours a day, said researchers led by Frank Hu, at the Harvard School of Public Health.

“The message is simple. Cutting back on TV watching is an impor-

tant way to reduce sedentary behaviors and decrease risk of diabetes and heart disease,” Hu said.

People who sit in front of the television are not only exercising less, they are likely eating unhealthy foods, he added.

“The combination of a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy diet and obesity creates a ‘perfect breeding ground’ for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.”

This is not the first study to associate TV time with ill effects.

Many studies have found a strong link to obesity, and one 2007 report found that more TV time was associated with higher blood pressure in obese children.

MANILA – Animal rights activists and thousands of members of the public expressed outrage Wednesday over a photo on Facebook showing a puppy pegged to a clothes line in the Philippines.

The photo was apparently posted by a young Filipino man on his Facebook account, where he initially ignored reprimands by pet lovers and boasted he would not be jailed for “washing” his dog.

The photo showed a small puppy hanging by five plastic pegs to a clothes line. After going viral on the Internet, the link was picked up by animal rights activists, including the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which launched an investigation.

“We hope that Philippine prosecutors will take action and prosecute this young man,” PETA legal officer Agnes Tam told AFP. “This is not child’s play, this is blatant animal cruelty.”

Tam said her organisation had asked police and their local counterparts to help search for the man, who according to his Facebook page lives in a suburban area south of Manila.

While she acknowledged that Internet pranks were common, Tam said she believed it was not a

hoax. The controversy also made national television news, and the man behind the Facebook site took down the offensive photos on Wednesday while offering an apology.

“I hope you could forgive me and I promise it would never happen again,” he wrote on his Facebook site on Wednesday morning.

However, thousands of people within the Facebook community refused to forgive, signing up to a plethora of new pages dedicated to expressing their outrage against

him. “Forgive? Never,” wrote Melvin John Girado, warning the puppy pegger that he was being hunted down by his college fraternity brothers.

A 1998 law bans cruelty to animals, which is punishable by up to two years in jail. That law is seldom enforced to its full extent.

However a Manila court last month ordered a university student who tortured and killed a cat, then bragged about it on his online diary, to perform community service.

FIFA Ethics committee question Blazer after complaint Reuters

MIAMI - FIFA’s Ethics Committee has questioned CONCACAF general secretary Chuck Blazer, the whistle-blower in the cash-for-votes scandal, after complaints about his behaviour from Caribbean federations.

The official complaint to FIFA was made in a letter to the committee signed by 11 Caribbean federations and seen by Reuters.

The complaint is related to Blazer’s behaviour at a CONCACAF meeting before the FIFA Congress last month in Zurich, Switzerland and does not refer in any way to the bribery issues currently under investigation by the world soccer body.

The letter said that Blazer made “statements of contempt and slander that served to impugn the integrity, discriminate against and infringe upon the personal rights” of CONCACAF members.

In an email to Reuters, Blazer confirmed he had heard from the Ethics Committee regarding the issue. “I have received an inquiry from the secretary of the Ethics Committee to respond to a complaint filed by the Jamaica Football Federation,” Blazer said.

“I will respond to the committee fully and I am confident of a positive resolution,” he added.

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – Jozy Altidore scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Guadeloupe on Tuesday as the United States seized the last quarter-final berth on offer in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The United States advance as the runners-up in Group C behind Panama, who sealed their group win with a 1-1 draw over Canada.

That result also insured that Group A’s El Salvador would advance as one of the top two thirdplaced teams.

The Americans, whose shock loss to Panama had put them in a precarious position, gained some breathing room when Altidore buried a driving shot from 25 meters in the ninth minute. The defeat was the third in a row for Guadeloupe, surprising semi-finalists four years ago.

Earlier at Sporting Park, Luis Tejada scored in a goalmouth scramble in the first minute of injury time to give Panama their 11 draw. After Anibal Godoy’s attempt was blocked, Canadian keeper Milan Borjan couldn’t get the ball cleared from in front of the goal and Tejada was able to

nudge it across the line.

Canada’s Dwayne De Rosario had converted his second penalty in as many games in the 62nd minute to give Canada the lead.

Large crowd expected for Mavs parade on Thursday Associated Press Writer

DALLAS – Five years after a parade drawn up to celebrate the Dallas Mavericks’ first NBA championship backfired, new plans are in place for a ride through the city’s streets.

About 250,000 people are expected to turn out Thursday to cheer on Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry and the rest of the 2011 champs. Everyone will be there, from the players to the coaches, the front office to franchise founder Donald Carter, who accepted the championship trophy when the Mavs beat the Miami Heat for the title on Sunday night.

“The parade is going to be amazing,” said Nowitzki, the finals MVP. “We’re going to enjoy the heck out of that.”

LONDON - Defending champion Serena Williams and her sister Venus have been made the eighth and 24th seeds respectively for Wimbledon, organisers said on Wednesday.

Serena, a 13-times grand slam champion, has played just one match since clinching last year’s tournament due to injuries and health problems while Venus also made a return this week after a fivemonth layoff.

World number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was seeded number one and Belgian Kim Clijsters second.

In the men’s draw the seedings followed the world rankings, number one and defending champion Rafa Nadal taking the top seeding with Novak Djokovic second and six-times winner Roger Federer third ahead of Briton Andy Murray.

LOS ANGELES – The FBI has contacted a Colorado restaurant to get surveillance tapes of a conversation between seventime Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and former teammate Tyler Hamilton over the weekend.

Armstrong and Hamilton ran into each other at a restaurant in Aspen on Saturday night, a few weeks after Hamilton went on “60 Minutes” and accused Armstrong of doping and encouraging his teammates to use performanceenhancing drugs as well.

Hamilton attorney Chris Manderson said his client was rattled by some of Armstrong’s comments. “It was aggressive and intimidating and we thought it should be reported to federal investigators,” Manderson told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

However, the tapes only capture the kitchen area and not the front of the restaurant where the incident occurred.

“I wish it was on surveillance to show it was a non-event,” said Larner, a friend of Armstrong’s.

Federal officials are now in their second year of investigating doping in cycling. Armstrong is a target of their work and a Los Angeles-based grand jury is hearing evidence that could lead to charges of fraud, conspiracy and drug trafficking against the cyclist and others on his Tour-winning teams.

Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office, and Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Los Angeles office, both declined comment.

Manderson said it was well known that Hamilton would be in Aspen; he believes Armstrong sought his fellow cyclist out for a confrontation.

“I don’t think it was a coincidence,” he said. Armstrong told Outside Magazine the incident was “certainly awkward for both of us” and “truly uneventful.”

Rossi says bike not solely to blame VALENTINO Rossi says he and the Ducati team must take equal responsibility for their poor performance in the British Grand Prix. The seven-time MotoGP champion qualified only 13th at Silverstone, and finished over a minute off the lead in sixth.

Although Rossi was at an experience disadvantage having missed last year’s inaugural race at the revised Silverstone due to his broken leg, he said there were bigger issues than just a lack of track knowledge holding him back this weekend.

“We knew that my lack of experience here compared to the others would hurt us, but it’s also true that we haven’t managed to improve our set-up as well as we should have,” he said. “In fact, today Nicky [Hayden] managed to have a nice race and ride well, even setting the fastest lap, which demonstrates that the Ducati is competitive in the wet.

“We didn’t improve enough though, and that made it hard for me, as the bike was difficult to ride and I couldn’t push hard.

“We’re all responsible — me, the bike, and the team — so together we’ll try to improve and return to the level we were at in Le Mans and Catalunya as soon as possible, and then take another step forward.”

With Hayden finishing fourth and Rossi sixth, the Italian felt the end result was still acceptable.

“Without a doubt, this weekend was the most difficult so far this season, but we at least managed to do a good job of limiting the damage,” he said. “Considering how we came into the race, sixth place is a fairly positive result that helps us to stay not too far from the top of the standings in fourth, which isn’t bad.”

Hayden was relatively satisfied with fourth, but reckoned he should have managed a podium. “To be honest, I really liked my chances for a podium in the rain today; if you’d

have told me before the race that I could have fourth, I’d have said, ‘No thanks, I can do better,’ but I’m not disappointed with my ride,” he said.

“I didn’t get a great start because the clutch was jumpy, and for the first few laps, it was hard to see and to get heat in the tyres. I had a big moment on the exit of Turn 1 and actually jarred my shoulder pretty good, but I tried to hang in there. “I saw Colin [Edwards] in front of me for the podium, and I really pushed.

“I think that’s the first time I’ve ever had the fastest lap on a Ducati, which is kind of cool even if you don’t get points for it.”

AUTOSPORT revealed that Hamilton met with Red Bull boss Christian Horner in private on Saturday evening in the Montreal paddock, raising speculation about a possible link in the future as Hamilton’s current contract expires at the end of 2012.

While speaking to reporters at Watkins Glen International, where he swapped rides with two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, Hamilton was asked about his future beyond 2012 and the chances of him considering a switch to Red Bull Racing or even NASCAR. Hamilton stated that his immediate future remains in Formula 1 and that his place would be at McLaren as long as the Woking outfit provides him with a competitive car.

He underlined the fact that his team has been the only one to beat Red Bull Racing to victories this year, as done by his team-mate Jenson Button last weekend in Montreal.

“I think for NASCAR, I mean I’ve grown up wanting to be world champion and I’ve definitely not achieved all that I want to [in Formula 1],” said Hamilton. “So definitely I’ll be spending as much time as I can there until I do achieve what I’ve always wanted to do.

“In terms of where I am, again I’m just very fortunate to be a part of McLaren. It’s one of the best teams there with great history and we’ve now got a car which is capable of winning, as my team-mate showed at the weekend. “We are the only other team that has won grands prix this year so I don’t see why you’d particularly want to move when you have the most competitive car.

“So as long as we have the car that can do the job, then there will be no reason to leave.” Asked if he had met with Christian Horner over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton did not deny having done so and said he has known the Red Bull Racing chief for many years even before he reached Formula 1.

He added that he enjoys a good relationship with many other bosses in the F1 paddock. “Well I know all the managers, the bosses and I know lots of people at the teams,” Hamilton said.

“I know Stefano Domenicali and we chat all the time and with Norbert Haug we chat all the time and Christian - when I was going from Formula 3 to GP2 I went and had a meeting with Christian when he was [running] the Red Bull [backed] team back in Formula 3000 I think it was.
