“For instance, IR 64 variety with a trademark of Putri Sejati in the market is sold at the price range of IDR 8,333 per kg in July, while IR 64 variety with a trademark of Kereta Api at the price range of IDR 8,438 per kg at the same time,” said Gede Suarsa,

Head of BPS Bali in Denpasar on Monday (Aug 1). Aside from rice, some other commodities also experienced price spike at the same time, explained Gede Suarsa, such as chicken flesh, eggs, beans, pork and onions. However, they were

still below the price hike of rice. “The price surge of rice as foodstuff has a great impact on the achievement of inflation rate in Denpasar lately. Within the period of July 2011, Denpasar faced inflation as much as 0.77 percent, while inflation rate in the calendar year of

January-July 2011 amounted to 2.87 percent,” he explained. He said the surge in the rice prices had been one of the dominant factors for the achievement of inflation rate in July. The surge itself remained in moderate range because the amount was still under one percent. Meanwhile, inflation in general occurred because there was a price increase as indicated by the increasing index in the group of goods and services. Continued on page 6

Like the nearly dozen others lined up along the track, the 50-yearold diabetes patient has all but given up on doctors and can’t afford the expensive medicines they prescribe. In her mind, she has only one option left: electric therapy. “I’ll keep doing this until I’m completely cured,” said Mulyati, twitching visibly as an oncoming passenger train sends an extra rush

Pseudo-medical treatments are wildly popular in many parts ofAsia — where rumors about those miraculously cured after touching a magic stone or eating dung from sacred cows can attract hundreds, sometimes thousands.
