Welcome to Mid Sweden, one of the best regions in the world!

More and more companies are recognizing the advantages of establishing business operations in our region. Our strategic location at the heart of Scandinavia is just one reason. Another is our long industrial tradition in forestry and mechanical and chemical engineering, in the form of companies like SCA, Metso Paper, Hägglunds Drives, Akzo Nobel, and Kubal.

We are a leader in the forest products industry, with companies like Norrskog, Jämtlamell, and ACB Laminat contributing to Sweden’s trade balance in this crucial sector. We have assumed a leadership role in fiber science thanks to specialist knowledge at Mid Sweden University, which also offers expertise in digital services, e-government and media technology.

We are the biofuel region – leading the world into biofuel. Sweden will be self-sufficient in transport fuels by 2020 and already exports ethanol technology.

Tourism is another future-oriented industry, and accounts for an annual turnover of some 570 million dollars, with over 15 million guest nights. Our region benefits from tourism expertise at the European Tourism Research Institute and the ecotechnology program at Mid Sweden University.

Yet more advantages of our region include the ability to combine successful business with a high quality of life, a

safe living environment, a richly varied landscape, and an endless supply of cultural and sporting activities.

Investments worth many millions of dollars are being made every year in our region in numerous business sectors. We have good infrastructure and expanding world-class companies.

If you want to establish yourselves in the European market our region is the best place for you. Here you can find modern office premises, highly educated employees, and the opportunity to collaborate with other companies in the region to achieve synergy effects. We have a university (Mid Sweden University) that graduates students with a world-class education each year.

Mid Sweden Style is the shared brand of the business sector in the counties of Jämtland and Västernorrland. Its aim is to initiate, coordinate, and market the best we have to offer to the global market, and create business opportunities in both directions, to and from our region. In total we have a population of approximately 400,000 creative individuals.

Mid Sweden Style is an initiative by Inibiz and the Mid Sweden Chamber of Commerce. Mid Sweden Style is supported by a large number of private companies and public organizations.

Welcome to Mid Sweden.

Welcome to Västernorrland

Västernorrland is a county of opportunity and diversity, situated in the heart of Sweden and the center of the Nordic region. It offers an unbeatable combination of options, including both natural and cultural experiences, wild rivers, an extraordinary coastline, dynamic city life and a spectacular countryside.

Västernorrland is also a county with a strong and stable commercial sector that produces some of the best goods and services in the country. The environmental engineering sector has developed a strong regional base in Västernorrland, partly due to our industrial history and our efficient, flexible adaptation to increasing market demands.

With a high net export value per employee–among the highest in Sweden–the county helps create good conditions for personal and commercial growth. A long history of export companies sets the stage for international trade in Västernorrland. One link of this trade goes through Exportcentrum, the county’s collaborative center for internationalization in business.

Welcome to Jämtland

Jämtland is located in the middle of Sweden. It consists mostly of forests, mountains and lakes. The landscape is clean, open and beautiful. But there is also the city life in Östersund with coffee houses, cultural choices and university.

Tourism has been well developed for 100 years. One of the strategies for the county is to arrange big events and competitions. The 2007 Alpine World Ski Championships was arranged in Åre and the preparations for the next World Championship, the 2008 Biathlon WC in Östersund has started. Besides tourism there are other big industrial trades such as forest, timber and outdoor equipments.

The county offers a lifestyle that attracts many people. Many people from the rest of Sweden and other parts of Europe are living in Jämtland.

SKIINGANDTOURISM

Tourism is the largest business in the county. This implies additional contributions, companies and people moving in from other parts of the country.

OUTDOOREQUIPMENTTOALL

The increasing tourism gives us different kinds of industries like producers of tents, skis, clothes and as the picture shows – snow cannons.

The forest is a large resource in the county and it means a lot for the forest industry, the outdoor life and the public health among other things.

Johan Eriksson was named Jämtland County Entrepreneur of the Year in 2006. The award was granted for his expansive leadership on his family farm, Dille, in northern Sweden. One part of the prize was a trip to E-Days in Chicago.

Johan is the fifth generation to run the farm, and he has built up a richly varied business that produces horse fodder, represents John Deere in Jämtland, runs a training center in conservation and forest management, and owns Hackås Precisionsgjuteri, a company that manufactures thin-walled aluminum goods in short series for the automotive, telecom, defense, medical, and instrument industries. Precicast in Canada is a part owner.

The company has export experience with Japan, and Johan looks forward to American business contacts. “Our casting skills should be of great interest in the U.S. Chances are that we can find business opportunities in the agricultural sector for import to Sweden as well.”

Quality products of merino wool

We manufacture top-quality products of the finest merino wool. Terry knitting optimizes the moisture-repellent, warming properties of the wool and results in soft, durable, airy socks.

Our products are designed, tested and manufactured under our own brand in Jämtland County in northern Sweden.

A few examples:

Stina’s breast warmers

Breast warmers of soft merino wool for nursing women.

Thin knee socks

Extra long, look great with skirts!

The foot is solid colored, the ankle striped.

“Sheephead” headband

Warm, cozy, and attractive, made from merino wool.

The product range also includes popular children’s socks with anti-slip soles and fun patterns.

Our philosophy:

We manufacture and sell quality wool products, mainly handcrafted. With only small-scale production, we create genuine products with heart, which keep our customers coming back.

Do you need help with your Swedish–American contacts?

From concept to commerce

Utvecklingssmedjan pursues projects from the conceptualization phase until the product is on store shelves.

“There are many innovators, but few entrepreneurs,” says Tore Sahlin, the company’s highly experienced owner.

When someone comes to Tore with an idea, he puts together the ideal development team. Project managers are recruited from all professions–manufacturers, designers, product developers, and financiers.

Companies are full of employees with great ideas, says Tore, but employers rarely have the time or understanding to test their feasibility. This is where Utvecklingssmedjan comes in.

Utvecklingssmedjan can also lend a hand when businesses go through a generation shift. The company has a network of personal contacts representing an exclusive link between Swedish commerce and the manufacturing industry in fast-growing China.

“We can serve as a link for Swedish companies that want to reach out to the world,” Tore concludes.

The Eco Belt of Scandinavia – a leader in sustainable development

THE ECO BELTOF SCANDINAVIA is an interregional cooperation between the areas of Trøndelag (Norway), and Jämtland and Härjedalen (Sweden). In the Eco Belt of Scandinavia there is great commitment to a sustainable environmental approach. The emission of greenhouse gases has fallen sharply. Biofuels are increasingly becoming the heating fuel of choice, and sales of eco-cars have now surpassed SUV sales.

THELOCALENVIRONMENT reveals clear signs of this commitment to sustainable development. Over 95 percent of the water in our lakes and rivers can be drunk without requiring purification, and 50 percent of our arable land is under organic cultivation.

THESESUCCESSES in the Eco Belt of Scandinavia are based on a long tradition of cooperation across county and national borders. One key factor has been welldeveloped collaboration between the public and private sectors.

WEHAVEFOCUSED for a long time on sustainable development in general and environmental management in particular. Today half of all the employees in this region work for companies or organizations that have introduced environmental management systems.

ENVIRONMENTALMANAGEMENT systems have been an important driver of industrial development. Swedish environmental legislation, strict environmental demands in the procurement process, and a generally high level of environmental awareness have raised local companies in most sectors to the highest international level in terms of their in-house environmental performance and new environmental technology.

American shopping malls–something for Sweden?

Lasse Bäckvall, CEO of the Norrlandspojkarna realty company, which has real estate holdings in the Swedish city of Sundsvall, is in Chicago to observe and learn.

“We develop real estate and I’m curious about whether we can find inspiration and good ideas in the big shopping malls here,” he explains.

Like all realty companies, Norrlandspojkarna buys and improves properties, but another of its ambition is to transform and surprise. Unconventional approaches make everyday life more enjoyable, and the company’s starting point is always to say “Why not?” rather than “Why?”

“In an industry where the product in essence consists of four walls and a roof, you have to dare to be different,” Lasse Bäckvall says. “That’s how you create stores and workplaces that stimulate growth and success. You’ll never become number one by following in other people’s footsteps.”

Sweden’s biggest private enterprise organization

The Federation of Private Enterprises, Företagarna, is Sweden’s only organization for individuals who start, own, and operate businesses. With more than 300 local branches we are a nation-wide organization with meeting places and networks in every Swedish municipality. We represent Sweden’s entrepreneurs and help influence public opinion by talking with decision-makers at the local, regional, national, and European Union levels. We create forums and meeting places for entrepreneurs both in Sweden and abroad. We also develop and supply a range of services to our members to help make their day-to-day business operations easier.

Traditional rustic Swedish fences for the American market?

Sweden’s number one supplier of rustic fences, Jämtgärsgård, has set its sights on the US market.

A gärdsgård fence gives a classic rustic touch to a property, like the perfect frame complements a work of art. These fences are environmentally friendly and maintenance free–requiring neither toxic chemicals nor any care. They simply grow more beautiful over the years. A gärdsgård fence adds that special something to round off any country setting. The material is slow-growing spruce, about 100 years old and very compact, ensuring a sturdy fence.

Jämtgärsgård stands for the very highest quality, using only select timber from the forests of Jämtland County in Sweden. The ends of the poles are burned to ensure extra resistance to the elements, according to age-old Swedish tradition.

Gramma is an enjoyable team game for all ages. The game is largely based on teamwork but individual imagination and creativity are also needed to win. Using cue words, players have to perform charades, draw things, guess things, take part in head-to-heads, answer grammatical and vocabulary questions. Every player is actively involved in the game and co-operation is important.

Gramma quickly encourages a better understanding of the English language. It extends vocabulary, develops a feel for the language and improves communicative skills—all through the fun of playing an absorbing educational game using words and word classes.

About a year ago Mikael visited southern Mississippi to sell a unique kind of house to the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina. The project attracted considerable interest but patenting difficulties unfortunately put an end to that particular idea.

Vanja Aronson Resurs is a consulting company for the hotel and restaurant industry as well as for the tourist sector in general. The company is also an active lobbyist in basically all fields of industry.

Since 2001 Vanja Aronson Resurs has organized the Guldgalan project—an annual industry gala in Jämtland County that attracts about 1,000 visitors each year.

• What expectations do you have for your trip?

“I would like to renew and deepen the contacts made at E-Days in Washington DC in 2005 and lay the foundation for a possible future E-Days in Mid Sweden.”

Coaching people and organizations is the business concept of ISHMm Coaching. The method involves focusing on targets by analyzing how and why individuals think and act.

“Too many people say yes even when they don’t want to,” explains company owner Karl-Einar Strindlund. “We’ve constructed a multi-dimensional platform that functions as a tool for individuals to make better decisions about what they really want. We offer the tool but the customer does all the work. We’re now moving from coaching in person to digital coaching, which can be sold worldwide via the Internet.”

Biofuel Region –

Mobilizing an Entire Region for Clean Vehicles and Fuels

BioFuel Region is the catalyst in a long-term undertaking where regional co-operation drives the development and implementation of renewable transport fuels based on biomass from forestry, agriculture and recycling.

The Swedish counties of Västernorrland and Västerbotten constitute the region which is 77 100 km2 in size and have 500 700 inhabitants. The vision is to change from a fossil fuel based transport system to a system with biofuels based on renewable raw materials, primarily cellulose.

BioFuel Region works towards three goals.

One - To be a leading, state of the art region in the development, production and utilization of cellulose based biofuels.

Two- To create industrial and regional development.

Three – To be world class in related research and how to involve societies in the change of the whole system. The two fuels we are working with are ethanol from cellulose and FT-diesel.
