avid Reynolds in the Castrol-backed Kelly Racing Stratco Commodore was the best placed Castrol runner after the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 at Queensland Raceway over the weekend, finishing Sunday’s 65-lap encounter in fifth placing. The weekend started well for the Kelly Racing team, with Rick Kelly grabbing two fourth place finishes during Saturday’s racing; followed by Greg Murphy in sixth in the first race. The second race of the day saw Rick Kelly repeat fourth position, Steve Owen, Greg Murphy and Mark Winterbottom climbing into the top ten – the highlight of a challenging weekend for Ford Performance Racing. Sunday saw further problems for the Castrol EDGE backed teams, after the 65 laps only David Reynolds emerged in the top ten, a major personal improvement. The Triple Eight team dominated the weekend’s competition with Craig Lowndes taking all three race wins and Jamie Whincup taking two second places and making an impressive comeback on Sunday from 25th to 10th.

WATERS TAKES

THE LEAD AFTER QR WIN The battle was fierce in the Castrol EDGE-supported Australian Formula Ford Championship round at Queensland Raceway last weekend with Cameron Waters proving that consistency is the key. Waters finished third in the first two races of the weekend before seizing the win in race three after the rest of the field suffered through several set backs, to get the round win. “I wasn’t happy finishing third in the first two races of the weekend, but as it’s turned out, those finishes were important and I was able to control the final race,” said Waters. “We really improved the car across the day and it was good enough in the final

race to build a gap and race calmly to the finish,” Waters said.” Proving that the Castrol EDGE supported Formula Ford series is one of the best avenues for Australian junior drivers, the newest member of the Brabham racing dynasty also took to the track over the weekend. Grandson of Sir Jack Brabham, Matthew Brabham took second place for the round after a successful weekend with his grandfather watching at the track. “I was a little lucky to still come away with second in the round after the final race, but fortunately I did enough in races one and two to secure the result,” said Brabham.

“There was plenty of good racing this weekend between all the drivers, so to come away with a podium and another trophy is a great result.” Waters’ fellow Shannon’s Supercar Showdown star, Nick Foster claimed a win in the first race but followed with a DNF in the second, caught in the third race carnage, Foster had to fight from 17th back to second, clinching third for the round. “I’m just really disappointed, we had the speed to win this weekend, but I made a mistake in race two and threw it away. The final race was really tough, but enjoyable at the same time. I’m probably a little lucky to finish on the podium, but I’ll take it,” Foster said.

he Australian Wallabies will be lead into this Saturday’s Castrol EDGE Tri Nations clash with New Zealand by first time test captain James Horwill. The Queensland Reds title-winning skipper will become Australia’s 77th test captain in front of a home crowd at Brisbane’s Suncorp stadium. The New Zealanders have already secured the Bledisloe Cup after the Australians loss in Auckland earlier in the month, however the sought after Castrol EDGE Tri Nations title is within the Wallabies grasp after New Zealand’s loss to South Africa over the weekend. Having not won the title since taking it back to back in 2000 and 2001 the Wallabies are keen to bring some Tri Nations pride back to Australia; however to do so they must break their 19 year losing streak on Queensland turf against the All Blacks. The Australian Wallabies will take on the New Zealand All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium this Saturday for the Castrol EDGE Tri Nations.

MINI WRC TEAM SCORES FIRST PODIUM Dani Sordo and the Castrol-supported MINI WRC Team were able to secure their first podium in the World Rally Championship in only their third race since the teams’ inclusion in the competition.

The ultimate prize for the day went to Citroen’s Sebastien Ogier who took his first career tarmac win after number one team driver Sebastien Loeb suffered a puncture ending his unbeaten record on tarmac.

It was the first tarmac rally for the MINI WRC team and Sordo and his co-driver Carlos del Barrio ran a near perfect race in a tough battle with Ford’s Mikko Hirvonen.

Sordo is now setting his sights on the Citroen pair, who have rarely been out of first and second all season, he said, “I am really, really happy for me and the team. For the first rally of the car on tarmac this is very good.”

Teammates Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle lost out in the battle for fourth place after a pace note error left the pair picking grapes in an adjoining vineyard and an electrical gremlin in the penultimate stage stopped the car.

“This is a surprise and the times were so close to Ford and Citroen that we have a lot of confidence for the next rally. The car is really good on tarmac. We shall now work a lot to try and beat Citroen as well.”

Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen fell behind the MINI lead car, finishing up over 48 seconds behind third, while Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila finished in fourteenth after a number of set backs over the weekend. The Castrol EDGE backed teams are looking forward to the new look Rally Australia in Coffs Harbour, with its brand new course and Super Special Stages on the Marina each night, September 8-11.

JFR’S NATIONALS KNOCKOUT Castrol’s NHRA Funny Car team, John Force Racing are keen to put their focus into the remainder of the season after a disappointing result for the team at the NHRA Nationals in Brainerd over the weekend. With both Mike Neff and Robert Hight already guaranteed a finals bid in the Funny Car Championship, John Force was able to qualify in the Brainerd

round to secure his spot in the finals and secure his 27th straight top ten season finish. His luck stopped there however, he was defeated by long time rival Cruz Pedregon in the first round after his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang lost traction midway through the race. Mike Neff defeated teammate Robert

Hight in the first round knocking him out of the competition only to be defeated by Ron Capps in the second round ending the day for John Force Racing. The teams’ poor weekend on track was overshadowed however by the birth of Jacob John Hood, the first grandson for John Force and the first child for team driver Ashley Force Hood who is currently on hiatus.

TRUST SYNTHETICS TRUST CASTROL EDGE THE SPECIALISTS WHEN IT COMES TO EXTREME POWER & PERFORMANCE WHY SYNTHETIC OILS?

Get the best protection for your engine by choosing a high quality synthetic oil. Synthetic oils offer significant advantages over mineral oils.

HIGH TEMPERATURE STABILITY: Synthetic oils are able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which mineral oils begin to break down. Synthetic oils provide optimum lubrication at extreme temperatures reducing wear and extending engine life.

FASTER LUBRICATION ON COLD STARTS: Synthetic oils remain more fluid at cold start up temperatures, circulating faster to protect moving parts within the engine. Because synthetic oils flow quicker, the engine reaches optimal operating efficiency sooner. Mineral oils on the other hand, tend to thicken in colder temperatures making the engine less efficient.

BETTER EVERYDAY PROTECTION: Synthetic oils are most resistant to the chemical degradation that comes with everyday driving. Synthetic oils provide better protection for your engine under normal as well as arduous driving conditions, minimising oil degradation and protecting against harmful deposits.

WHY CASTROL EDGE?

At Castrol we know a thing or two about synthetic engine oil. In fact, we developed the very first fully synthetic racing oil. We’ve poured over 100 years of experience and lubricant technology into Castrol EDGE, the best engine oil we’ve ever made.

PROVEN PERFORMANCE IN EXTREME CONDITIONS: Castrol EDGE is able to withstand higher operating temperatures under which other engine oils begin to break down. Tests prove that even after blasting an engine at 340ºC, it is still running 72 hours later. Castrol EDGE will also protect your engine at start up with its superior cold flow properties. At -55ºC Castrol EDGE still flows while the competitor synthetic oil has almost solidified. Castrol EDGE’s synthetic technology provides outstanding protection at extreme temperatures, reducing wear and extending the life of your engine.

MAXIMUM POWER FOR LONGER: Get the best performance out of your engine by choosing Castrol EDGE. Tests prove that Castrol EDGE delivers maximum horsepower for up to 45% longer than competitor synthetic oils.
