First, we introduce you to West Boca residents, the Stapps, which include Creed lead singer Scott Stapp, his wife, pageant queen Jaclyn, and their children Jagger, 12, Milan, 4 and Daniel, 1. Inside, the couple speaks exclusively to The Boca Raton Observer about their relationship, careers, kids and what it’s really like to be a rock star and a beauty queen. Get to know them in “Beauty And The Beat” (page 50). And speaking of raising children, a rite of passage most parents face is trying to get their kids into the right college. Inside, we take a look at this nation’s top universities and speak with experts about what parents should (and should not) do to increase their kids’ chances for getting into their colleges of choice. You’ll find some invaluable advice in “School Daze” (page 56). Ever wonder what it’s like to be a twin, or even a triplet? For our Family issue, we thought it would be fun to seek out some of Boca Raton’s multiples and ask them just that. On a more serious note, we visit with Parkland teen Teagan Marti, who made headlines last year after falling 10 stories from a Wisconsin amusement park ride. Doctors predicted the worst, but Teagan proved them wrong. She isn’t just surviving, but thriving. Meet this inspirational young woman in “Miracle Child” (page 70).

Also in this issue, we present some great family road trips, picnic recipes, back-to-school trends and more. Personally, after a very eye-opening year, I’ve learned that family is truly the glue that holds me together. This summer has been a special time of reflection regarding all of my families. My two wonderful sons just returned from sleepaway camp, where they had an amazing time. In turn, I was able to spend quality time with my fabulous husband and partner. Together, we’re now looking forward to spending the rest of the summer bonding as a family and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Next, there is my family of close friends, who remind me that all things happen for a reason, and that the true meaning of friendship is when people know all about you—and like you anyway! Finally, my Boca Raton Observer family helps me create this incredible publication each month and lately has me very proud. In addition to the four awards we won last month from the Society of Professional Journalists’ South Florida Pro Chapter, we were just informed we’ve been nominated for at least six awards by the Florida Magazine Association. We look forward to attending the FMA’s prestigious Annual Publishing Conference in Orlando this month, where we’ll receive our awards. We invite you, our readership family, to keep checking us out each month, and to share all your feedback and ideas for future stories. Red velvet cupcake’s not just the name of a dessert. it’s also the hair color of rising star and boca raton native Ariana grande, the bright-eyed teen who plays spunky cat valentine on nickelodeon’s hit tv show “victorious.” grande, 18, has been enthusiastically embraced by the tween set (fans call themselves the “Ariana Army”), with 24 million views on her Youtube channel and more than a half million twitter followers. grande began her professional career on broadway, starring as charlotte in the musical “13.” these days—when not shooting her tv show, making public appearances and dominating social media—the los Angeles resident is recording her first album with universal records. And she still finds time to study for classes at north broward preparatory school in coconut creek, from where she’s earning a long-distance degree. grande recently took time out of her packed schedule to speak with The Boca Raton Observer. How would you compare working on Broadway to TV?

“On Broadway, you feed off the thrill of live theater and the intimacy you have with each audience. Whereas on TV, the intimacy you have is with the cast and crew, and you have the freedom to deliver lines differently many times and make mistakes.” What’s it like playing Cat Valentine on “Victorious?”

“I love playing Cat because she’s like a magnified version of me. I also love that she isn’t afraid of being judged or expressing herself. She’s a free spirit, very optimistic and loves life.”

BoY WoNder Boca raton 11th grader Jacob Goldberg may be legally blind and have Tourette Syndrome, but he’s also a triathlete, marathoner, Pine Crest School honor student and, now, South Florida’s Most Powerful Kid. The resilient 18-year-old won the title after receiving half of all online votes during the second annual Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Powerful Kid Contest, which honors the efforts of unspoken young heroes. Goldberg founded

Together We See, a nonprofit group that sends disabled kids and their siblings to summer camp. He came up with the idea after attending sleepaway camp with his sister Rachael, 21, and appreciating the comfort and security her presence provided. His group so far has raised more than $45,000 and sponsored more than 100 campers. “Jacob’s bravery in the face of daily adversity and his unrelenting desire to help out his fellow blind peers embody the spirit we try to cele-

A FAther’s bAttle Miami Heat Forward Mike Miller Gets His Happy Ending After All By emily hall

hile Miami Heat fans were cheering their team during May’s Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls, forward Mike Miller was fighting his own personal battle. As the pivotal games were being played, Miller had learned that his baby daughter, Jaelyn, born 2.5 weeks premature on May 19th with four holes in her heart, was being rushed to Fort Lauderdalebased Holy Cross Hospital’s neo-natal intensive care unit, where a battery of physicians were monitoring her around the clock. And so began some of the most harrowing days of the basketball star’s life. Miller, who had joined the team in 2010, ran on fumes, alternating between basketball courts in Miami and Chicago, and harried midnight trips to the Fort Lauderdale hospital to be with Jaelyn, who was tied to a jumble of life-saving tubes. He recalls the entire experience as a heart-wrenching blur, he says. 26

“All I remember is going back and forth to the hospital after the games, day after day,” recalls Miller, 31, who lives in Pompano Beach with wife Jennifer, 33, and their sons Mason, 8 and Mavrick, 6. “I rarely slept; it was so stressful and upsetting. But I did what I had to do.” Not the most optimal circumstances for a basketball player competing in one of the most important seasons of his life.

“It was so difficult, but I used the basketball court as a place to let off steam,” he explains. “It really helped, although I have no idea if all this affected my game.” (The Heat won the series but ultimately lost the finals to the Dallas Mavericks.) He says the worst part was not knowing what was wrong with his daughter—or if she would even survive. “I kept things to myself but asked a

lot of questions at the hospital,” he says. “When doctors said she was doing well and we could take her home I felt the most amazing sense of relief. I am blessed to have her and such a wonderful family.” At press time, Miller says that Jaelyn had been examined by her cardiologist, who reported that she was doing well and had gained some weight. She will continue with periodic checkups. O

the Breast intentions Cameron Diaz’s surly “Bad teacher” has Wild lesson plan

ameron Diaz did not stretch her dramatic reach with the outlandish character of middle school teacher elizabeth halsey in the raucous and raunchy summer romp “Bad teacher,” but she did appear to have a good time, and that’s what this movie is all about. Diaz seems to revel in the caricaturish role of every parent’s worst nightmare—a shallow, selfabsorbed, irresponsible moron in charge of a classroom of their kids. as an educator and role model, halsey falls woefully short as she daily avoids doing any actual teaching by sloughing off movies on her students so she can recover from her hangover and ponder schemes to raise enough money for a breast augmentation. You see, after being dumped by her rich boyfriend, she was forced to return to the teaching job she was never good at to begin with. Desperate for another sugar daddy, she decides implants are the best course of action.

halsey is surrounded by a faculty of one-dimensional colleagues: Fellow teacher amy squirrel (lucy punch) is her snarky rival for the affections of substitute teacher scott Delacorte (Justin timberlake), whose main appeal for halsey is that he appears to have family money. the escalating sophomoric rivalry between the two teachers is the perfect vehicle

for sight gags and absurd situations that grow more and more bizarre. a gym teacher, russell Gettis (Jason segel) shows interest in halsey but his lack of personal wealth rules him out, and overweight, emotional eater lynn Davies (phyllis smith) becomes elizabeth’s friend and foil. principal Wally snur (John Michael higgins) is well-meaning, but, as are all summer movie principals, completely oblivious and ineffective. a list of this film’s parental warnings could fill a magazine page (the “F-word” is uttered 37 times; the “s-word” 17 times). there’s also ample bathroom humor, crude sexual references, stereotypical racial

and gender references… let’s see, what else? they’ve got bare breasts being examined like cantaloupes in the plastic surgeon’s office, Diaz performing a soapy stripteaselike dance at a school car wash, a teacher smoking a bong at school and more. if these types of things offend you, this is not your summer entertainment. But if you do find a lot to chortle at in these escapades—and theaters packed with teens and twentysomethings have so far—this is a fast-paced example of the genre in which director Jake Kasdan conducts profane sight gags into a crescendo of boorish bravado without letting the dramatic tension falter.

Diaz and punch are consistent in their spiteful cartoonish roles, which, in a way, hearken back to Diaz’s unlikely cinematic start when she landed the female lead in Jim Carrey’s “the Mask” before ever having had an acting class. “Bad teacher” sets no standards for intellectual depth or cinematic excellence, but it’s refreshingly free of political correctness and moral lessons. it will not be mentioned in the same sentence with the word “oscar,” but it’s certainly capable of enlivening an adolescent summer night. aroon 5 is a reincarnation, having survived dismal debut failure in its previous life that crushed its musical aspirations and sent all four band members scurrying off to college to plan new futures in something other than music. Bryan Adams Goes Unplugged At Kravis Center

ryan Adams, whose raspy voice immediately transports listeners back to ’80s power ballad mode, has used his seductively lyrical hooks and soaring delivery to sell millions of pop albums, movie tickets and even his photography at art exhibits. But the versatile Adams, who performs acoustic versions of his rock hits at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts on August 11th at 8 p.m., is foremost a balladeer who can belt it out and make you believe it. The musician’s acoustic performances have a surprisingly intimate feeling at concerts that typically consist of just him, his guitar and a piano player. His current tour is in support of his 2010 album, Bare Bones, which started making its way across Europe in July. Party Girl Ke$ha Brings Pop Style To Bayfront Park K

e$ha has made her way in the music world by a mixture of talent and chutzpah, wrangling her way into self-promotion opportunities and making the most of them. The 24-year-old, whose paean to self-indulgence, “Tik Tok,” was No. 1 in 11 countries, performs at Miami’s Bayfront Park in the Klipsch Amphitheatre on August 7th at 7:30 p.m. Kesha Rose Sebert was destined to work in music. The daughter of Pebe Sebert, a single-mother songwriter, occasionally accompanied her mom and younger brother to performances, and stages and studios became her early playgrounds. When she exhibited early vocal talent, Pebe encouraged her to sing, and when Sebert was 4, the music-loving family moved to Nashville, Tenn. When she and her mother later wrote a song together, the ambitious girl tracked down a producer who helped turn it into a demo that was eventually heard by Dr. Luke, who persuaded her to move to Los Angeles and sign a record deal. Sebert went on to perform backup for other successful musicians, appearing in a Katy Perry video and singing on a Britney Spears record. Ever ambitious, she is said to have once trespassed on Prince’s property to leave him a demo. Sebert finally got some attention when she wandered into a studio where Flo Rida was recording and ended up appearing on his No. 1 single “Right Round.” She then signed with RCA records and put out the electro-pop dance album Animal, which contains “Tik Tok” and three other singles that reached the Top 10 in the United States, Australia and Canada, including “Blah Blah Blah,” “Your Love Is My Drug” and “Take It Off.” The album has received mix reviews. Rolling Stone magazine called it “repulsive.” The video for “Tik Tok,” which glorifies a reckless, narcissistic lifestyle and churlish attitude, has received nearly 60 million views on YouTube. he list of well-known names is growing at a rather unsettling pace. indeed, if you were to read this on a tuesday, say around bedtime, then cash it in for the night, because there might be another two or three surprises by morning light.

these days, just about anything seems plausible. Bill Clinton. John edwards. tiger woods. Arnold schwarzenegger. Anthony weiner. And the hits just keep coming. if this were “Jeopardy!” any of us could buzz in with the right question: (the question being the answer.) “who are men behaving badly?” “i have so many feelings when these stories come out,” says linda lipshutz, a licensed clinical social worker in Palm Beach Gardens. “on a personal level, i always think of the spouse and the children and how the family doesn’t have the privacy they

need to sort out their pain.” Yes, how can Maria shriver sort out anything—mainly, her feelings— when she’s being forced into a public reaction? “it must be so humiliating, and then they have to put on this brave face,” says Carolyn Kelley north, a Boca raton therapist. “it’s the men who should be humiliated.” Amen, sister. For sure, powerful men have always cheated sexually and emotionally through the years. if John F. Kenne-

dy had been president in 2011, his relationship with Marilyn Monroe would be nobody’s secret. But given our new Media technology, today’s unfaithful men seem a little more brazen. they text naked photos and dirty messages. often, they do their cheating from the very home where their wife may be sleeping. And in a very odd twist of social evolution, they’re often hitting on women they’ve never even met—in some cases risking their power and prestige for women with whom they have no emotional attachment. “i think a lot of powerful men are

type A personalities and they perform well under stress,” says lipshutz. “they continually need to have a new challenge. they keep raising the bar for themselves. it’s kind of like an adrenaline rush.” Apparently, it’s the kind of adrenaline high a lot of also-powerful women can do without. More and more often, the women in these relationships are deciding not to stand by their man, a la tammy wynette, at least when he goes out to face the public that first time out. All those men were perceived to have it all, at least from the public vantage point. And so did U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-New York. His wife, Huma Abedin, is also powerful in major Democratic circles, having worked as a top Hillary Clinton aide for many years. Abedin is also described as very private—at least, she used to be—so there have been few profiles written about her with her own consent. She’s also described as smart, kind and influential, with impeccable political timing. Yet...

There he was, her husband of just one year tweeting a picture of himself in his underpants and posting it— quite by mistake—to his public accountant. He’d meant to send it as a personal message to a woman he’d never met. And did we mention reports that Abedin is pregnant?

And the hits just keep on coming.

Why oh why do they do it?

Dr. David Miller, a Boca Raton psychologist, says it’s difficult, of course, to know why these men do what they do without actually knowing them.

Dr. Miller says all the above-mentioned men probably have a few things in common: Narcissism. Perversion. And an Oedipus conflict—all of it inner-connected in very, very complicated ways.

Oops. Recently, of course the Schwarzenegger infidelity—and the revelation that he fathered a son with the family housekeeper—was perhaps the biggest bombshell. Then Edwards, a former Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidate, was indicted in June for allegedly using campaign money to cover up his longtime affair and illegitimate daughter—an affair and child his wife knew about when she died of breast cancer in December. 40

“It’s hard to know what’s really going on until you hear their personal stories,” he explains. But, oh, how we want to understand. What makes a man who has everything risk it all for a cheap thrill? (All three specialists with whom we spoke—Lipshutz, Kelley North and Dr. Miller—make the point that while powerful women also stray, men seem to have the recent monopoly.)

With these men, there’s a sort of “chronic emotional deprivation” where “everything is evolving around their needs,” he says. And there’s “a lack of appreciation or a lack of empathy for another person’s wants or desires.” Maybe the man had both a nanny and a mother who doted. In that case, one loving partner just might not be enough.

Says Dr. Miller, “With powerful men, there’s a certain amount of gratification in being idolized and being looked up to.” Of course, through it all—be it Edwards or Clinton, the young Congressman from New York or an aging Tiger Woods—we sit, rather helpless to the drama. It’s hard not to watch. “Why do we love looking at someone else’s tragedy?” echoes Lipshutz, when we ask her about this. “Maybe it makes us feel better about our own lives. If we focus on somebody else’s tragedy, we feel better for a bit. It’s ugly, but it’s our culture.” O

ne of the great rewards of being a parent is the nightly opportunity to read bedtime stories with your kids. At the end of a hectic day, there’s nothing like that moment when you put the rest of the world on hold and open the pages of a beloved book. For many of us, it’s difficult to imagine that such an experience could be had by pushing the “on” button of an electronic device. But with the explosive popularity of tablet computers and e-readers, a lot of people are betting it can be done: Week after week, publishers

and app developers are reintroducing popular children’s books in digital formats that are at once familiar and full of surprises. While Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color are looking to gain traction in this market, some of the most interesting and innovative products are being designed specifically for the iPad. Take a look at the Top 10 book apps on any given week and you’ll see the list is dominated by children’s titles. And these aren’t just digital facsimiles of the hardback that’s already

sitting on your shelf, but interactive tomes that invite exploration. Download Sandra Boynton’s “Moo, Baa, La La La!” for example, and tap the screen to find out exactly what she meant by “three singing pigs.” Explore the pages of “PopOut! Juraj Hlavac, a former computer programmer who’s carving out a new career in this niche, says he’s intrigued by the iPad’s ability to introduce kids to the centuries-old tales he grew up on. Using his programming skills to animate vintage artwork, Hlavac produced a version of “Three Little Pigs”

In his take on “The Little Mermaid and Other Stories by Hans Christian Andersen,” readers can touch the screen to create fireworks in the sky, pop translucent bubbles of sea foam or scare a pair of brown snails back into their shells. Hlavac’s books always end with a button to “Tap here to send me an e-mail!” Which, as it turns out, is one of his favorite parts of the job. “Back in my professional life, I would write software and hand it off, and many months down the line some programmer would use the software I wrote,” he says. “Here, the distance between the creator and the reader is nonexistent. The first e-mail I got was from two kids saying, ‘Thank you for sharing your stories with us.’ Now I receive dozens of them from all over

And it’s really rewarding for me to see that someone else is getting enjoyment from the work I’m putting out there.” Becky Quiroga, children’s book buyer for South Florida’s Books & Books chain, says her department hasn’t yet felt the pinch from e-readers cutting into sales. “I’ve read a bunch of articles saying that kids’ picture books are going down, but for us people are still coming in for the actual books,” she says. “Our weekend sales are driven by newspapers and children’s books—for gifts, for birthday parties, for a child who already has too many toys. So especially with the threat of e-books, our stores are actually really trying to beef up the kids’ departments.” 44

Although Quiroga readily admits to having an “old-school” bias for ink on paper, she sometimes worries that parents are using electronic books as an excuse to read to their kids less often. “I think there’s something to be said about the different voices that parents can make, the dramatic buildup of turning the pages,” she says. “One of my favorite things as a child was reading with my dad: the voices, the characters, everything brought to life. Plus, no one wants their iPad in the hands of a baby who’s going to chew and slobber on it. You can’t put your finger in the hole of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ with an e-book. You need a board book for that.”

Dan Foster, store buyer for Classic Bookshop in Palm Beach, agrees that e-readers leave a lot to be desired as a child’s introduction to literature. “Half the benefit of a board book is the tactile experience,” he says. “I would rather see the parent read a real book to their child than loaning their iPad out.” I don’t disagree with Quiroga and Foster. As much as I love my iPad, I can’t imagine it ever replacing a classic picture book as the medium of choice for a cozy reading session. But I have to admit that the charm and cleverness of some of these new titles have really intrigued me, as well as my kids. Not to mention how they’ve lightened what my husband calls “the library” that we take on vacation.

Hlavac, for one, says he hopes that parents will view his creations as just one more opportunity to share great stories with their children. That’s why he consciously chooses not to include audio narrations, as so many e-books do. “It’s not supposed to be a toy where you give your 5-year-old the iPad and say, ‘Go play in your room and have the book be read to you, because I’m too busy,’” he says. “It’s really important that the books be designed in such a way that they’re meant for the parent’s interaction, and not a substitute for it. They should give parents a set of tools, another way to spend time reading with their kids that’s fun for the kids and for the parents.” O

He’s a rock star. She’s a beauty queen. But perhaps this celebrity couple’s most important role is as mom and dad to their three children. On this particular summer afternoon, Scott Stapp, the handsome lead singer of the Grammy-winning band Creed, and his wife, Jaclyn, whose many titles include model, author and Miss New York USA 2004, are in their cozy West Boca Raton home, squeezing in a phone interview before their 4-year-old daughter, Milan, and 12-year-old son, Jagger, come racing through the door after a long day at school. Jaclyn, who’s spent a good part of her glamorous life on stage being judged for looks, talent and personality, knows that in a few minutes she’ll be stationed at the dining room table, helping with some not-so-glamorous homework. Her designer bag is stuffed with bottles and diapers for their youngest son, Daniel, 1, and even though it’s midafternoon on a weekday, she’s still not sure what the family will have for dinner. “We’ll see what’s in our freezer,” says Jaclyn, 29. 50

The Stapps can likely afford to hire a cook and even a few nannies, but they choose to do things the old-fashioned way—taking care of the household themselves. Indeed, instead of opting for the entitled rock star life with hired help in places like Los Angeles, they’ve chosen to live here, among the manicured suburbs of southern Palm Beach County, where they’re surrounded by peace and quiet instead of the drama and paparazzi that life in a high-profile city inevitably brings. And while it’s not every day you learn that a rock star and a beauty queen live down the road, it’s also fairly rare to learn that this rock star and beauty queen are, well, just like everyone else. Sure, Scott’s arms are covered in tattoos and Jaclyn’s beauty is so striking that it borders on intimidating, but this couple isn’t arrogant and doesn’t care if you recognize their famous faces. Here they strive to be like every other family. They eat at restaurants like Olive Garden, catch the latest flicks at Cinemark Palace in Boca Raton and drive their kids to and from school in SUVs they bought to replace the Maserati and Ferrari they sold when the kids came along.

Still, when he’s on the road, Scott is anything but a stereotypical soccer dad.

Then, in 2007, Scott was arrested for domestic assault, though the charges were later dropped.

He’s known to his fans as the sexy, shirtless rock star women began to swoon over in the late 1990s. Back then he had his trademark long hair and this distinguishable deep voice that sold more than 26 million records in the United States alone and made Creed the biggest band of the decade. One of the band’s most notable tunes is “With Arms Wide Open,” which won a Grammy award for Best Rock Song in 2001. Scott wrote it after learning he was going to be a father to his first born, Jagger. Scott’s success with Creed has also come with some dark moments, which the media has aggressively reported over the years. Among them was a battle with substance abuse, the reported thought of suicide, an alleged sex tape and the band’s

“I definitely look at those experiences as ways to learn and grow as a human being,” Scott says of his challenges in the past. Before anyone judges the Stapps, Jaclyn points out that there is no such thing as a perfect person or a perfect marriage. “We live through the ups and downs in life,” she says. “What you put into something is what you get out of it.” One of the ways that Scott works through certain issues is with his music. While the band was apart, Scott began working on his own solo career and kept writing music. Some of his most personal songs include “One Last Breath,” a song where Scott says he bares his soul and inspires listeners to

reach out and ask for help when they need it. Another is “Away In Silence,” which was inspired by his love for Jaclyn. Creed, however, eventually reunited and released a reunion album in 2009. There’s talk of another Creed album in 2012 as well as another solo album for Scott. He’s already made the demos in his private studio here in Boca Raton. Scott is also working on an autobiography that he calls a summary of his journeys and experiences from his childhood through his career. (He grew up in a very strict and religious family in a small North Carolina town, ran away as a teenager and never returned.) But he’s not the only author in the family. Jaclyn has also entered the writing world, recently releasing her first children’s book called “Wacky Jacky” (available at jaclynstapp.com or on amazon.com). It’s a story based on Jaclyn’s life as a child, when August 2011

people saw her as anything but a beauty queen. She was born in New York but raised in a small Central Florida town and says that when she was younger, people thought she was a boy. Despite her boyish looks, Jaclyn had always wanted to compete in pageants so at 13, she began to reach for her dreams and never looked back. In 2004, she held the title of Miss New York USA and in 2008 was crowned Mrs. Florida America; she later placed first runner-up in the Mrs. America contest. “I realized the power of winning a pageant title wasn’t just about the crown, it was like a job. I had a responsibility to represent other women,” she says. “It’s not easy to stand on stage and get judged. It really helped me in all areas of my life and opened so many doors for me.”

clyn came from a very traditional family so he flew all the way to Baltimore, where Jaclyn’s mother lived at the time, to request permission to date her daughter. “She just wanted to know who this guy was with tattoos and piercings,” Jaclyn recalls with a laugh. “When I first met Scott I expected this rock star attitude, but he was a very down to earth guy. When you get to know him and you see his heart, he’s not this rock star invincible person you see on TV.” The couple married at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami and recently celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary. Next year the Stapps hope to renew their vows—something they wanted to do this year, but couldn’t find time between their busy schedules. That’s not surprising. After all, they both work and are raising three kids. Between juggling Scott’s concerts and albums (he performs about 60 shows a year) and Jaclyn’s pageants and book tours (her mother, who now lives just a mile away, helps out when needed) the couple lives in a house filled with toys and Baby Einstein videos. Dad walks around the house with a guitar in hand, ready to sing to his children. Family time is and always will be important to them. “We go to the beach. We play a lot of sports. We do things with our church,” Scott says. “We’re simple, man. We didn’t want fast-paced craziness. We want privacy and serenity.” And in Boca Raton, that’s exactly what they have.

This included doors in the publishing world. Her book teaches children that they don’t need a crown to sparkle. Jaclyn didn’t just use her childhood as inspiration; her own kids’ stories about bullying were also a big part of why she wrote the book. “It really hit me hard and it’s sad to know how cruel kids can be,” she says. “I wanted to share my true story and give a message that no matter what you look like, that you are special and it’s OK to be different.” When Scott first met Jaclyn about eight years ago, he says he immediately saw how special and different she was. The couple met at a Muscular Dystrophy Charity Gala in New York City. Jaclyn was in her final year as Miss New York and the nonprofit organization was auctioning off some of Scott’s stuff for charity. The musician was smitten and the pair spent three months getting to know each other over the phone before their first date. Scott, who lived in South Beach at the time, knew Ja54

KEEPING THE FAITH The Stapps live in a gated community in West Boca Raton, where six years ago they purchased a large lot at the end of a cul-de-sac (for privacy, we will not reveal the name of the community). On their property is a pool, a playground, basketball and tennis courts and a home theater. Their house is where their kids’ friends like to hang out on weekends and that’s exactly what the Stapps had hoped for. At a prestigious private school in southern Palm Beach County, Milan and Jagger are both excelling. But Milan, the 4-year-old, is still very impressed with her daddy. On most mornings, in the car on the way to school, she sings a lullaby Scott wrote for her as a baby and when he picks her up after school, she often announces to everyone, “That’s my daddy!” Says Jaclyn: “She definitely knows that there’s something different and special about her parents.” The Stapps often speak openly about the importance of family and helping others (Scott and Jaclyn each have their own charity) and are also very open about their faith. Jaclyn calls herself a Christian woman and says the Bible is “kind of like a foundation for me.” The family prays before every

By Linda Haase Jared Rothenberg has a résumé most college applicants would covet: He aced 16 Advanced Placement classes, was freshman class president, spent a month shadowing an oncological surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, volunteered on an Arizona Hopi Indian reservation, earned a 5.23 grade point average and scored 2250 on the SAT. And yet, the 18-year-old recent Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate worried these sterling credentials wouldn’t be enough to get him into Brown University, the Ivy League Providence, Rhode Island-based college that last year accepted just 9 percent of applicants. “It was stressful when I went to visit and saw hundreds of kids packed into the room. I saw how tough the competition was going to be,” recalls Rothenberg, whose high school classmates voted him Most Likely to Succeed. “I was hope-

ful, but I thought my chances were slim. There was nothing I could do but wait.” And while Rothenberg will be heading to Brown University this fall, not all applicants are as fortunate. These

days, getting into an Ivy League school is tougher than advanced physics. Consider this your crib notes.

KEYS TO SUCCESS For one thing, the competition is brutal, with admission rates of 10 percent or less at most Ivy League schools. And each year it gets tougher as students raise the bar with soaring college-placement test scores, stellar GPAs and life experiences that rival the résumés of high-powered CEOs. And while good grades and high test scores are essential, they no longer guarantee an acceptance letter. “Colleges want to know what makes this person a person beyond being a student… what defines them and how they’ve put their interests and energies to work outside the classroom,” explains Naomi Steinberg, founder of Boca Raton-based Apply Yourself Educational Consulting. Barry Liebowitz, a partner with International College Counselors, which has offices in Boca Raton and throughout Florida, agrees that universities want students who’ve had meaningful life experiences—summer college classes, internships and research projects are all helpful. So is recognition for a talent or

community service on a state, national or—even better—international level.

High school students should begin strategizing for college their freshman year, experts recommend. “You can’t wait until junior year to kick it into gear because you can’t undo what happened in ninth and 10th grades,” cautions Ari Worthman, associate director of college counseling at Pine Crest School in Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale. And take the most challenging courses, adds Patti Skelton, a college advisor with North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek.

Indeed, listing a leadership role on your résumé is invaluable, and practically mandatory at colleges such as Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

The key, he says, is for students to find something they’re passionate about. And, he suggests, “if that club or organization doesn’t exist, start one.”

“We’re looking for students we can help to become the leaders of their generation in whatever they wish to pursue,” Yale’s Web site reads. “As we review every application, two questions guide

Keep it in perspectiVe: “You could be a top-notch student and do everything right and still not get into Harvard,” cautions Robert Bouressa, director of the college guidance office at Saint Andrews School in Boca Raton. “For many kids, focusing everything on a Top 10 school is not the best way to spend their time.” In other words: there’s a school for everyone, so keep your options open.

our admissions team: ‘Who is likely to make the most of Yale’s resources?’ and ‘Who will contribute most significantly to the Yale community?’” These are some of the same things Mark Schneider, a Boynton Beach resident and University of Chicago alumnus, keeps in mind when he interviews Palm Beach County applicants for the college. “I try to find out what captivates them intellectually and then assess what promise they have of turning their captivation into a significant accomplishment somewhere down the road,” explains Schneider, a university volunteer who meets with students who request interviews but

demics. “One question on the application is, ‘What do you do for fun?’ When students say, ‘I like to hang out with my friends or relax by cooking,’ we actually like that. They don’t have to be doing something enriching every moment of their life,” says Schmill.

THE SEESAW EFFECT A balanced life is essential for students— and not just for getting into college, but for peace of mind, explains Janet A. Courtney, a Palm Beach Gardens licensed clinical social worker who specializes in children, adolescents and families. She suggests a three-tiered approach to downtime: play, rest and a healthy, balanced diet. “Unfortunately, the overwhelming emphasis on academic performance by parents and schools is a universal one and the burden eventually falls on the shoulders of children,” she says. “One mother told me that the children in her daughter’s third-grade class were all ‘fretting’ over the need to get into a good college. These are 8-year-olds, mind you!” Overstressed students can become depressed, Courtney warns. Signs of depression include “ongoing episodes of anger or a total shut-down in communication, associated with an ‘I don’t care about anything attitude,’” she says. At this point, Courtney recommends that parents seek immediate professional help. Time management was one way Jared Rothenberg reduced his anxiety, his mother, Ellen, explains. “Leaving a lot of time to do everything helped,” she says. She felt it was important to “listen to what he was looking for in a school and not put my wishes or hopes into it. I let him do the research and come to his own conclusion about what was important to him in a college.” Granting your child the independence to make decisions is key, Steinberg concurs. After all, she says, college admission staffers are interested in how students come across—not their parents. “Students should be the face of the admissions process. Parents need to step out

It’s all about letting them know you’re genuinely interested. Colleges want to know that.” MIT’s Schmill laments that he receives more calls from parents than students. “It’s a disturbing trend,” he says. “What does it say to your child if you’re making calls on their behalf? It gives them the message that you want to make sure it gets done right, so you’re doing it. It’s not sending a signal of confidence to the child.” Finally, it’s important to realize that students don’t need to attend an Ivy League college to be successful. “There’s an over-focus on the most selective schools,” Schmill says. “The reality is that there are a number of excellent colleges that students could go to and have just as fabulous a life.” O

For These Boca Raton Twins And Triplets, There’s Strength In Numbers All children fill us with a sense of wonder, but twins are doubly wonderful. And triplets are wonderfully rare. ¶ In 2008, 138,660 twins were born in the United States, according to the U.S. government’s Vital Statistics Report. That’s about 32 per 1,000 births. In that same year, however, America welcomed only 5,877 triplets, 345 quadruplets and a mere 46 quintuplets or higher. ¶ No matter the number, multiples, as they’re called, raise multiple questions. ¶ How do expectant parents react when they suddenly learn their baby will be babies? Is there really such a thing as “twin telepathy?” Is maintaining individual identities a challenge? ¶ And are they sick of hearing the same old questions? ¶ Meet some of Boca Raton’s identical and fraternal twins, along with a set of triplets, and hear their fascinating, and sometimes very un-identical, life stories…

This year they were chosen by classmates as the Best Twins/Triplets, out of 22 sets of twins and two sets of triplets (not unusual in a school with more than 1,300 students). The sisters are firm believers in triplet telepathy. “One time we were walking,” recalls Emily, “and I thought, ‘I need to pull my shirt down.’ And Kyra said, ‘I was just going to tell you that.’” With adolescence, their individuality has become more clearly defined. All have separate bedrooms. Emily and Kyra play soccer, Rachel and Emily are cheerleaders, Emily takes dance.

“There’s always someone your age in your house,” says Emily. Give or take 30 seconds.

When their birthday arrives, Rachel insists on a vanilla cake; Kyra’s partial to an M&M ice cream cake and Kyra favors pineapple-lemon.

“I think we’ve always had our own personalities,” says Rachel, the eldest.

After all, should a girl be denied her own cake simply because she’s a minute younger than one sister, and 30 seconds younger than the other?

The twins had already established a list of words, of course. Their friends were amazed.

After graduating from St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, they roomed together at Boston College, where both majored in political science. Then they went to the University of Florida, roomed together again, and earned law degrees.

Two brains, one mind!

Now 32—Adam is five minutes older—they’re both in-house counsels at U.S. Metal Buildings, the company founded by their father. And they coordinate their business trips to be sure they’re home in Boca at the same time.

“Our looks come from our genes,” says Anthony. “But our morals came from the family values they instilled in us.”

But for all their similarities, they insist that what really matters came not from being born five minutes apart, but from being raised by good parents.

“We love it when people refer to us as ‘the twins,’” says Adam. “It’s made us stronger in anything we do. I don’t know what it’s like not to be a twin, but I know Anthony is my best friend in the world. We’ve become as close as close can possibly get.” Both are single, and yes, they do occasionally double-date. “But our dates don’t mix us up,” Adam says. “If you see us together, we look a little bit different. You can tell by our body language, subtle little things.” As teenagers, though, they weren’t above having a little fun with their friends’ expectations. “Do you know what the other one’s thinking?” friends would ask, and the Rack twins would eagerly demonstrate. “I’m thinking of the word ‘bed,’” Adam would say. And when they quizzed Anthony in the next room: “Adam’s thinking of the word ‘bed.’” August 2011

DYNAMIC DUO Sherry & Shelly Griffith Yes, Sherry and Shelly Griffith do wear the same clothes. But only when they have to. For the past three years, both sisters have donned uniforms as firefighter-paramedics in Boca Raton, where they live. For the past

16 years, they’ve also worn the required swimsuits as lifeguards with Boca Raton Ocean Rescue. And they continue to work part-time as lifeguards with Delray Beach Ocean Rescue. “We work different shifts and float to different stations,” says Sherry, 40, the older sister by three minutes. “But our co-workers do have trouble telling us apart. Sometimes we just let it go.” Growing up in Maryland with three older brothers and an older sister, the Griffith girls always felt more like siblings than twins. Growing up near Ocean City, Md., a summer job at the beach seemed natural to all but one of the six Griffith siblings. “All my brothers are lifeguards too,” says Sherry, “so we just thought of

ourselves as sisters.” Do they believe in “twin telepathy?” “No, we don’t experience that,” Sherry says, “but we do seem to like all the same stuff. We both like the same types of music, classic rock and country. And we eat a lot of chicken and salads.” And both practice patience when asked the most maddening question of all: Are you twins or sisters? “Kind of both,” they reply, with a smile. “The best thing about being a twin is, you always have a friend,” says Shelly. “And you can always be in two places at one time. If I need to be in two places, I can always send Sherry to do the other job for me.” Once, many years ago, Shelly ran an errand and forgot to bring along her driver’s license. Naturally, she got stopped. “So she used my license,” Sherry confides. “She was using my car and didn’t have her own ID, so she used mine. I got a ticket on her driving!” Sherry took the mandatory driver safety class, paid the fine and had her sister’s record wiped clean. “She can laugh about it now,” says Shelly, “but not at the time.”

BORN IDENTITIES Emily & HaRRy WEisman Being a teenager is all about establishing your own identity. Becoming an individual. Becoming yourself. Being a teenager when you’re a twin can make adolescence even more challenging, simply because of what other people like to assume about you. Emily and Harry Weisman are both 14, about to enter 10th grade at Donna Klein Jewish Academy in Boca Raton. But they’re fraternal twins, so please don’t assume they’re identical in other ways. “He likes rap music and I like Taylor Swift,” explains Emily. “He loves cream cheese. I hate cream cheese. My favorite movie is ‘The Parent Trap,’ and I have no idea what his is. He likes every kind of fish there is, and I only like tuna fish.” “I hate tuna out of a can,” chimes in Harry, the older by one minute. “I highly dislike that. I like salmon, sea bass, mahi, snapper…” Both play basketball. “But I also do cross-country running,” adds Emily. And they never study together. “We never get along when we do it,” she notes. “We’re twins,” she says, emphatically. “But we’re not the same person, and we don’t think the same. Even though we love each other, we fight a lot and have different opinions.” On one point, though, they do think alike.

“Sometimes we both say the same thing at the same time,” Harry concedes, “but in the long run, I don’t see any twin telepathy going on.” “Not at all,” Emily concurs. “We’re completely different, and we never think the same thing.” Being a twin, they both say, is complicated. As infants, they were dressed in matching clothes, but of different colors, and that’s sort of what being a fraternal twin is like. You’re twins, but you’re not identical. You may be of the same gender, or brother and sister, like the Weismans, but the resemblance is no greater than any biological brother and sister. “Once I tell people we’re twins, they say, ‘Oh, I can see it.’” says Emily. “But if I didn’t tell them, they would never know. It’s basically the same as brother and sister, except we’re the same age.”

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Still, they are identical twins, so the Nisonsons soon developed a way to tell them apart. “We always put Lindsay on the left in the stroller so in pictures we would know which was which.”

AmAndA & LindsAy nisonson What’s it like being the parent of 4-year-old twins? “It’s double the fun,” says father Ronald Nisonson of Boca Raton, “and four times the work.” Just getting the news was exhausting. “It was during an ultrasound,” remembers their mother, Jennifer Nisonson. “And the doctor said, ‘It’s two babies.’ We were in complete shock. I cried and laughed. We learned at six weeks, so we had a lot of time to prepare. But there’s no way to prepare.” And when they arrived, the real work began. “It’s two babies crying at the same time, and two babies needing you

at the same time. It’s making sure they get an equal part of me. People with triplets—I don’t know how they do it.” Ronald found himself working double-time. “In their mischievous state, I was repeating things over and over. When one went to grab something, I would go, ‘Stop!’ ‘Stop!’” The Nisonsons have worked hard to make sure Amanda and Lindsay are individuals first. “We never call them ‘the twins,’” says Jennifer. “And I try very hard

As they grow, differences are emerging. “Lindsay’s a little more dramatic and loves to dress up and play princess,” Jennifer says. “But one is not always the dominant one. They’re equally happy, fun, friendly girls, but if you ask them if they look alike they’ll tell you no.” Fortunately, Amanda and Lindsay have an older sister to lead the way. “I’m their role model,” says Haley Nisonson, 9. “And one day they’ll follow in my footsteps.” O

When Parkland's Teagan MarTi Plummeted 10 Stories From An Amusement Park Ride, Doctors Predicted The Worst. She Proved TheM Wrong.

But she has. Some of them wondered if she’d ever see again. But she can. And the bystanders, including her own horrified parents, who saw the Parkland resident drop 10 long stories from a Wisconsin amusement park ride last summer, doubted she’d even survive. After all, how many 12-year-olds could fall 100 feet, land flat on their backs—and live?

nose, her mouth and even her eyes like wet red tears. Strangers cried. Her family members screamed. A man near the scene fell to his knees and prayed. As her mother, Julie Marti, frantically rushed to Teagan’s side, she noticed her daughter’s once rosy cheeks had turned the color of ash, and her eyes had rolled into the back of her head, on their way to some faraway place Julie didn’t want her to go.

Julie, 50, does most of the talking because Teagan has been stuck with a tracheal tube in her neck for the past year. Her left diaphragm was paralyzed after the fall, causing carbon dioxide to build up in her body, so, at night, she needs to attach a ventilator to the tube to help her breathe. Doctors vowed Teagan Marti would never walk again.

“Teagan, it’s mommy!” Julie recalls screaming to her daughter. “It’s mommy! Stay with me! Please stay with me!”

A LONG HARD ROAD Fast-forward one year and Teagan, now 13, is sitting in the living room of her Parkland home as her mother conducts a phone interview with this reporter. Julie has given plenty of media interviews since the accident last July 30th, and most every piece seems to touch readers and/or viewers the same way, leaving them stunned that Teagan didn’t die. J u n e / J u ly 2 0 1 1

The tube muffles her voice and makes it difficult for some people to understand what she’s saying. But her mother can dissect the noises perfectly, just as any mother would. On this day, she enthusiastically provides an update on Teagan’s progress because it’s a life-changing

the Wisconsin Dells, where they rented a cabin and spent a few days as tourists. One of their stops was Extreme World, an amusement park where the thrill ride Terminal Velocity stood 140 feet tall. The ride carries you into the sky in a cage and after reaching 100 feet,

But the net never surfaced. “I can see it with my eyes open. I can see it with my eyes closed,” Julie says of the fall. “Teagan says she doesn’t remember any of it. I think she’s just blocking the whole thing out.” What she does remember is being in the hospital for 91 days. She had to blink to communicate, had no feeling in her hands or feet and at first wasn’t even sure how she’d ended up in a hospital bed. She was in intensive care with what seemed like millions of tubes connected to her body, tiny pieces of equipment working to keep her

And perhaps an even worse memory was driving the 50 miles to the hospital and not knowing if Teagan would be dead or alive upon arrival. She thinks about those moments now and still can’t believe Teagan is here. On this Earth. Studying and eating and talking and learning to walk again. Just the other day, Teagan called to wish her a happy birthday and to tell her she loved her. It was the best birthday present she could’ve gotten this year. “Thanks be to God, I thoroughly believe in prayer,” Anderson says. “People prayed for her everywhere. Our relatives, their friends, their churches. Every day people who don’t even know Teagan ask me how she’s doing. Teagan is a person a lot of people know now. It’s amazing.” Those prayers may have been what pushed Teagan to start proving doctors wrong. Some thought she’d live her life as a vegetable because the fall was so horrific and many, including her father, figured she would suffer at least some paralysis. But those who doubted Teagan’s abilities would quickly learn to never doubt her again.

one—Teagan may have surgery this year to remove the tube so she can breathe on her own again. That’s a big step the family is ready for because it will allow Teagan to be more independent and what 13year-old wouldn’t want that? “Obviously she can’t sing, she can’t scream… it’ll be such a blessing to get that thing out of her,” Julie says with promise. “She’s come such a long way.” It’s been an arduous road for the tough little girl since last summer’s tragedy. Her mom Julie and father Alex (whom have since divorced) had taken Teagan and her sister, Taylor, then 13, to Chicago for a family reunion. During their vacation, they made a side trip to 72

Teagan, an avid daredevil, saw the ride featured on The Travel Channel and for months had talked excitedly about riding it. The time had finally arrived.

“I didn’t know what to believe. We didn’t know in the beginning what the prognosis was going to be,” she recalls. “For her to be alive is a miracle.”

Teagan’s grandmother, Carol Anderson, who lives in Elgin, Ill., was standing next to Julie when Teagan fell. She remembers grabbing Tea-

She regained feeling in her hands, legs, arms and feet. And thanks to aggressive physical therapists, she’s learned to use them all over again. Sure, she gets frustrated and maybe even angry, but Teagan tells herself to keep trying because she knows she can succeed. “They really push her and she’s just very determined,” Julie says. “She doesn’t give up. That’s part of her personality. She’s so determined to do things for herself.” Though she plunged 100 feet and landed on her back, she suffered no brain damage, stupefying everyone. In March, she began using a walker. At first, the short steps left her breathless, but now she can walk a good bit before needing to rest,

And remember how her eyes dripped blood, leaving some to assume she’d be blind? Her vision is so perfect that she uses the computer screen most every day to keep up with her studies online. She attends the Florida Virtual School, an Internet-based public school that allows students to work at their own pace, and she recently completed the eighth grade. Before the accident Teagan was a straight-A student and, amazingly, she still is. When she grows up, Teagan says she wants to work with animals because she’s an avid animal lover. But her mom has other plans. “Honestly, I think she could go straight to medical school,” Julie says, recalling the countless hours Teagan has spent around doctors and nurses. Given Teagan’s determination, it would come as no surprise if she ends up having both careers, and perhaps even a few more. “I’m not going to put a limit on anything,” Julie says. “I’ve seen what she can do.”

Kindness of strangers Before the accident, Teagan was a tomboy. She didn’t fill her closet with frilly dresses and paint her fingernails cotton candy pink. Teagan would rather have been riding skateboards, climbing trees and getting dirty. “That’s why she wanted to go on this ride,” Julie says. “She’s such an adventurer.” She was on the swim team, loved spending time in the pool at home and appreciated the adrenaline rush she’d get after running, racing or doing anything that took guts and lots of energy. Kind strangers have built Teagan a

ramp so she can get in and out of her one-story house, as well as rails in the shower and by the toilet so she can use the bathroom by herself. Although Teagan can get around most parts of her house without any problems, the pool is not equipped for someone who has trouble walking. So Teagan must watch from the sidelines as others enjoy the cool water on hot sunny days. Julie hopes to one day get railings

While Teagan may be self-conscious and feel down from time to time, her friends are quick to tell her they still think she’s great. Surrounding her bed are cards and pictures they’ve given her during the past year. They serve as Teagan’s reminders that she’s loved and always will be. And they remind her mother of all the encouragement the family has received. When Julie speaks about the people who’ve reached out to them since Teagan’s fall, she sometimes becomes speechless, quietly searching for the right words to describe how she feels about all the love that’s come their way.

Though they have to keep her room sterile, Teagan has tried to make it feel homey. A bookshelf is stuffed with adventure-type books, and there’s a TV and stuffed animals. After all, though Teagan isn’t the same as she was before physically, she’s still your average 13-year-old girl. She is an avid texter, loves to read and watch TV and gets in trouble if she stays up too late playing her Nintendo DS. She's got a big heart, having donated her hair to Locks of Love, a charity that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. One of her favorite pastimes is going to the movies, but sometimes her mom has trouble persuading her to go because Teagan worries people will stare at her.

But really, there are no perfect words. Just tears of gratitude and hopes that these people know how much they’re appreciated. Some have done things like bring food to their doorstep, donate money, knit quilts and write touching letters. Students in a fourthgrade class from a small Florida town who didn’t know Teagan or her family each sent sweet cards. Local children started lemonade stands to raise money so Julie could help pay medical bills and a woman who owns miniature ponies has brought them by the house twice to put a smile on Teagan’s face. Julie’s close friends set up a Web site—miracles4teagan.com—where people can get updates on Teagan’s condition and donate to a special needs trust set up just for Teagan. “The past year has been very difficult. I don’t know how I could’ve gotten through it without my support group of friends, family and strangers,” Julie says through tears. “There’s too many to count. There’s so many to name. I have so much to be grateful for.” And though Julie tries her best to remain positive and happy for her children, she admits there are times when her tears are not always happy ones.

Julie is a licensed sonographer, but taking a job at the moment isn’t an option because she needs to be home caring for Teagan. Recently divorced, she’s learning how to juggle the household and all the bills on her own and constantly worries about money. The Marti family reached an undisclosed settlement in a lawsuit they filed against the amusement park. Though Julie says she is not at liberty to talk about the case, she still finds herself struggling to pay the bills. “The stress level gets to you sometimes. Are we going to be able to stay in the house? I have tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and I honestly don’t know how I’m going to pay them,” says Julie, who tries to hide her fears from her daughters. “That’s adult stuff. Kids need to be kids. Both of my children have been through enough and I don’t want Teagan blaming herself.” So when it’s time for Julie to cry, she tries to do it somewhere alone. Her bedroom. Her car. Wherever she can. And when she’s finished, she dries her eyes and ventures back into her hectic world, where there are so many reminders of how fortunate she really is. Earlier this summer Julie was flipping through a newspaper when she learned that an 11-year-old girl from New Jersey was on a school trip at an amusement park and fell 100 feet from a Ferris wheel. And just last month at an amusement park in New York, a war veteran who lost both legs while serving in Iraq fell out of a roller coaster. Both the girl and the veteran died instantly. Julie realizes Teagan could have ended up just like them. “How many people fall 100 feet and live?” she asks. “Just one person. My daughter. How lucky am I?” O August 2011

The economy may be in the tank and a tank of gas is still over $3 a gallon, but locals continue to get wanderlust this time of year—especially families who’ve been staring at the same four walls all summer. A change of scenery is always refreshing, even if it’s just to another beach destination, to one of Florida’s treasured natural springs or a visit to the state capital for a taste of the Old South. ¶ Here are four fun getaways all located within a day’s drive of South Florida. BEACHY KEEN sT. simon’s island, Ga. Why would anyone leave our gorgeous beaches and drive six or so hours north to seemingly more of the same? The answer is simple. “Anyone who is a fan of beaches knows that all beaches are different,” says Candice Temple, public information officer for Glynn County, Ga., where St. Simon’s Island is located. “We have a palette where every family can paint their own picture.” 74

WATER WORLD Blue spRinG sTaTe paRk, oRanGe ciTy, Fla. You could spend an entire summer visiting all of Florida’s natural springs, but a quick vacation within a four-hour drive of South Florida is Blue Spring State Park in western Volusia County. The park covers more than 2,600 acres and has the largest spring

on the St. John’s River. By definition, a natural spring is any place where water springs forth from underground and its temperature is usually a constant 72-73 degrees— warm enough to attract manatees in the cool winter months and cold enough to attract plenty of visitors during the long hot summer. Blue Spring has 51 campsites and six cabins, both of which fill up quickly during the summer. The park is located within five miles of Orange City and within an hour of Orlando. Blue Spring State Park manager Bob Rundle recommends visiting on weekdays during the summer. “The park usually does not fill up on weekdays,” he explains. Still, he says his favorite time of year is during their brief off-season, starting in midSeptember. “It’s very serene,” he says. “You can see Florida the way it probably was 500 to 700 years ago.” Popular activities besides swimming are canoeing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving and tubing down the river. With its delightful average water temperature, this park is a great place to cool off and enjoy nature. “It’s very, very popular in summer as an old-fashioned swimming hole,” says Rundle. “It’s clear, clean spring water.”

OLD SOUTHERN STYLE tAllAhAssee, FlA. There’s never been a better time to take a few days to explore Florida’s historic state capital city than now, according to Katie Kole, marketing director for Visit Tallahassee. Sure, she may be a bit biased, but she makes a good point. “We just launched a campaign called ‘Capital Summer in the Capital City,’” Kole explains. “There are all kinds of great deals on summer events and we have a list of 25 things to do for $25 or less.” The top of Kole’s list of attractions is the Old Capitol Building in downtown Tallahassee (admission is free, though donations are appreciated). “The building itself is beautiful,” she points out. “Kids and parents alike enjoy the experience.” Built in 1845, the stained-glass domed building has been restored and the state’s history comes alive in the form of interactive exhibits. More than 250 artifacts housed in 21 rooms introduce visitors to Florida’s governmental history from territorial days to the present. Tallahassee Museum

But who needs manufactured luxury when Cayo Costa’s got nine miles of beaches and acres of pine forests and oak hammocks, and activities like fishing, snorkeling, hiking and shelling? “We have light fluffy sand and lots of seashells,” says Chad Lach, park manager, who suggests renting a bike to get around (beach cruiser bikes are available for rent on the island). Anglers can cast from their boats or from shore (anyone over 16 needs a valid Florida fishing license) and an amphitheater provides the location for educational programs on the park’s ecology and history. If you’re planning to visit Cayo Costa, here are a few things to keep in mind: If you have a private boat you can dock at one of the park’s 19 boat slips. If you take the ferry, Lach suggests the Tropic Star of Pine Island, which leaves from Jug Creek Marina in Bokeelia. And by the way—it’s gonna get hot out there. But that’s what makes it nice, says Lach, because you might just feel like you have the place to yourself. “In the summertime it’s not that crowded,” he explains.

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat butter with an electric mixer until smooth; add sugar gradually until well blended, about 2 minutes. Add vanilla, eggs and peanut butter. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; add to butter mixture and mix until just combined. Spread 2/3 of dough mixture into a greased 13’x 9’ baking dish; spread evenly with strawberry preserves and top with dollops of remaining dough. Sprinkle with peanuts and bake 45 minutes or until golden brown. Place baking pan on wire rack; cool and cut into 12 even squares. Pack with wax paper.

BLUEBERRY LEMONADE WITH FRESH MINT This festive drink is deliciously refreshing and makes an attractive addition to any picnic table. Be sure to make plenty: this is a true crowd pleaser. INGREDIENTS 4 12 oz. cans frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed centr lemons, juiced 4 lem cup granulated sugar ¾ cu large bunches of mint, woody stems 2 lar removed remo cups water 3 cu pint fresh blueberries 1 pin cups ice cubes 3 cu lemons, halved 4 lem

Preheat broiler. Cut red peppers in half vertically and seed them. Place pepper halves, cut side down, along with onion strips, in a shallow pan. Broil vegetables until pepper skins start to shrivel, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Peel and seed tomatoes. Peel peppers and cut into ¼-wide strips. Place them, along with the onions, in a large mixing bowl. (Dressing)

wenty hungry folks from across North America gathered at Stop Burgers in Weston for the chance to win big bucks by downing the most half-pound sirloin burgers in 10 minutes, but in the end professional eating competitor “Furious” Pete Czerwinski of Toronto, Canada took the prize by gobbling an amazing eight burgers. In addition to the $2,500 winnings, Czerwinski received an Eating Contest Championship Ketchup Belt, presented by Jamie McDonnell, CEO of the Weston Dining Group and Stop Burgers. Also on hand for the occasion were Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Davone Bess, who served as a celebrity judge and South Florida radio personality John “Footy” Kross, who served as emcee. Mains, 61, began her foray into baking 19 years ago, after the high-powered corporate executive found herself unemployed. Rather than seek another job, she struck out on her own, starting a brownie business using her mother’s secret recipe. Her company, called Sheila G. “Show coordinators described our Brownie Brittle as ‘a runaway hit,’” says Mains, whose treat flavors include chocolate chip, peanut butter chip and toffee crunch.

GOLDEN GIRL Stefanie Graf To Play In Chris Evert/ Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic

ennis legend Stefanie Graf, who was the world’s top women’s player for a record 377 weeks during her stellar career, will play in the 2011 Chris Evert/Raymond James ProCelebrity Tennis Classic on November 12th and 13th at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. “We are thrilled to have Stefanie at our event this year,” said Chris Evert, event host and founder of Chris Evert Charities. “She has done so much for tennis but she has done even more for children around the world and we know she will be a great addition to our field of celebrities at this year’s event.”

Graf this year will join celebrity players Christian Slater, Hoda Kotb, Scott Foley and others. Graf has been the year-end No. 1 player in the world a record eight times and collected 107 singles titles during her career, including 22 Grand Slam singles championships. In 1988, Graf became the first and only player to achieve the “Golden Slam” by winning all four Grand Slam singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year.
