EDITORIAL WELCOME TO THE NEW DOCTOR WHO FAN MAGAZINE Hello! The title may have you a little confused: yes, it ’s Issue Three, but it is still a new magazine. The previous two issues had been really struggling for content about the official series of Doctor Who, so the magazine has regenerated! This is now entirely about the strange antics of fans across the globe, and a fan’s perspective of the Whoniverse and hopefully you will enjoy reading it more, and find it more useful, than ever before. RUMOURS THAT WEREN’T TRUE THE DAILY STAR Forget Daleks, Time Lord Matt Smith will come face-to-face with a giant alien shark that flies, during a sci-fi version of Charles Dickens' festive story A Christmas Carol. An unsuspecting Doctor is taken by surprise when he comes across the monster shark. Thinking it's “just” a deadly great white shark, he's thrown into turmoil when the beast takes off out of the water and flies into the sky. A show source revealed: "Even the Doc gets a fright. He wasn't expecting it to fly." Well, you wouldn't, would you? The episode is scheduled to be aired on Christmas Day and has been written by the ever-busy Steven Moffat, who intends to “throw everything" at the festive spectacular. "We're going for broke with this one," revealed Steven. "It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters." Wicked!

MAIN FEATURE Devious is a fan film about the events between the Doctor’s regeneration in The War Games and the arrival of Jon Pertwee as the Doctor in Spearhead From Space. The film starred Pertwee in his last appearance as the Third Doctor in 1995 - a year before his death from a heart attack. The film’s plot is best explained by the official website: The basic plot involves the Doctor having to perform a test to redeem himself after his Trial (in the "War Games"). Certain Time Lords were unhappy with the verdict and felt he needed a second chance. Led by Callisto they persuaded certain members of the High Council (Chaldar, the Covellitor) that a test of non-interference should be set up. The Doctor was extracted from his timestream midway through his regeneration after the Trial, and so his incomplete persona was stuck midway between the second and third incarnations. He is unaware of this, and as the story starts, is only gradually realising he has changed. Before he is placed into the test environment his mind is fed with a set of memories and assigned some companions. These companions are in fact supporters of Callisto. One of them is Auriga who is an important TimeLord - one Callisto is trying to impress, and so he is given the 'lead companion' role as it were. Companion Adreinna is assigned as Amber Lyn (or Amber). The Covellitor (an influential and important Timelord, and Councillor Chaldar give themselves minor roles but intend to observe events. Thanks for that! Nine Daleks have been made for the production in total, four of which were borrowed by the BBC to make the 1999 Comic Relief sketch The Curse of Fatal Death, written by one Steven Moffat. Two stage plays (2007 and 2008) based on ‘lost’ stories The Evil of the Daleks and The Daleks’ Masterplan respectively. Devious the film is still in production but if you want to see the Daleks and work-in-progress live then they will be displayed this year at Brighton Modelworld (more details on page 2).

Bus Stop This short film is based on a DWM onepart comic strip from 2007. It follows the antics of the Doctor’s trip from Mars to Earth in the present day; he makes his escape from mutants via a London bus. (Fans might liken this to Planet of the Dead, but this came first!) This adaption is very true to the original story, yet due to being part of a series (though it is a standalone story) the Doctor has to be changed from the Tenth in the original comic strip, and likewise the companion isn’t Martha. However, the rest of the script is very accurate, nearly word perfect! The only way that this may be improved is by reintroducing the Mayor plotline from the original; without ‘Mayor Soup’ the Doctor’s excursion does seem to be rather pointless. All in all, though, this is a great use of 5 minutes of your day. Search YouTube for Bus Stop Doctor Who
Christel Films: How The Doctor Stole Christmas The great animated series returns with a Christmas Special, which explains via a news report how a man in green ands white striped suit had been caught on CCTV stealing a huge amount of cash from a bank and placing the country in such an amount of debt that Christmas is cancelled for Britain. And then the Doctor turns up and is amazed to find himself as public enemy number 1... UNIT makes an appearance in trying to track down the real criminal. They are used well, and there are some great new characters. Although this is a series, this is perfect for standalone viewing. Chances are, though, that after this you’ll want to see it all. - and there's a neat little twist at the end there, too.. REVIEWS Around the Universe In 50 Years
EPISODE 1: ROSE
THE GREAT BIG WATCH-A-THON OF NEW WHO! I’VE NEVER PARTICULARLY LIKES SERIES ONE. The production team hadn’ t really ‘got’ it yet, yet here it comes and it’s actually quite good. The episode opens with the standard shot of Earth in space, with the Murray Gold classic overlaid, just like on the album – but better. With headphones on, like me, you can hear a magical tingling sound whispering around the room. Why couldn’t this have happened in Series Four? The episode contains a lot of infamous lines, which had me grinning from ear to ear, and even chuckling out loud, much to the confusion of everybody else in the room. Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor is at his best here – the mysterious man who keeps popping up. Another moment that I loved was just so Doctor Who-ish – the late comic relief character, Clive, takes Rose into his shed, and becomes almost sinister in his warnings to Rose. It’s just fantastic. Until 21:41. Mickey goes and gets his hands stuck in a bin (look, you can see his fingers being horribly stretched!)…and then we cut to a shot of Mickey battling a obviously-CGI bin, which swallows him up, burps, and produces a weird plastic replica. Although replica is not a true word for what it does – Rose in some scenes is actually sitting opposite him and she doesn’t notice! Then, the Doctor fights with ‘Mickey’, and beheads him. On the first review, I break my own rules and mention a future episode, as when Martha is cloned in The Sontaran Stratagem, the clone looks exactly like her. Not some melted action figure! The Nestene scenes are thrilling, if the CGI isn’t great, and you have to spare a thought for Eccleston – he’s being strangled by an Auton for at least two minutes of this episode, imagine what that must have been like to film! All in all,though, it’s actually quite good. Which is why it gets a four!
