The PCT was created in April 2002 following the merger of five partner organisations and is responsible for supporting the local population of Barnsley (224,600 people) to maintain good health. Its primary responsibility is to improve the health of the local people by promoting healthy lifestyles and providing care in the community and ensuring that appropriate hospital services are available. The boundaries of the PCT are co-terminus with the Local Authority and cover a diverse area of 24 miles with a mix of rural and urban areas. The Trust is given funding to plan and deliver health services and it spends approximately £370 million per year on health care for the people of Barnsley. It places contracts with doctors, dentists, pharmacists and opticians, community service providers and hospital services.
