Our upcoming season brings a new and fresh feel of challenge and anticipation. Fueling this is a team commitment to a new level of fitness. “Our team has worked hard all summer so that they are in the best physical condition possible.” In the past we gave our team workouts for the summer but this year this team wanted fitness standards. We searched and investigated and came up with a set of tough but reasonable standards and although we are not all at those standards yet the fitness level of team 2013 is better than ever.

Molly Brown, and Crari Jarvis. We have plenty of competition at keeper and it only makes for great practices and keeper training. Our attack this year should stronger than it has been for a couple of seasons with the return of Melissa Hogan and Allison Van Patten moved up from her midfield position. Mel is as tough as they come and will win balls and finish while Ali is lightning fast and is more the speedy frontrunner that can finish as well. They are backed up by a pair of feisty freshmen in Leeann Latsch and Cami Baker. All four work very hard and can find the net.

Our 2013 Saints team will look very much the same on paper but this team has matured and is very determined to take charge of the opportunity they have to represent Aquinas College. We lost three very good and experienced leaders from last season in Courtney Havens, Heather Lewis, and Kelli Sprenger to graduation so it’s time for others to step up and fill those holes. Last season we had three new coaches and 19 new players. All of our new coaches Lisa Goldsmith, JaimeTomaszewski , and Roger Garner are back along with twelve of the freshmen. We all know each other better and the chemistry is good so when we add that to a solid group of returning upper classmen and a very talented and feisty group of first year players our expectations are on the rise.

Our defense is lead by Maggie Keiffer and she is flanked by Casey McDonough and Jackie Gipe. Maggie is a solid defender that stays cool and handles the pressure while giving out direction to those in front of her. Casey is a quick and clever player that can win the ball and get it up the field fast. She has also done her work in the weight room and doesn’t mind mixing up a bit as well. Jackie is all about mixing it up while winning the ball. Opposing front runners will be looking for Jackie all season. In the middle we will look to Elizabeth Vaughan this season to be our attacking midfielder, she was first team all WHAC last year. Elizabeth will be backed up by Claire Krohn. The midfield is held down by Mikayla Goldsmith in the center and flanked on the outside by Ryanne James and Khrystal Lewis the younger sister of Heather Lewis who played outside mid for the last four seasons. Our defensive mid-field is up for grabs right now with three fighting it out for the starting nod. Those three are Ali Mancini, Brenna Cojeen, and Colleen Vincent.

Our key returners are lead by senior captain Elizabeth Vaughan. Told by doctors three years ago that she would never play soccer again because of three ACL tears in the same knee Vaughan made the decicion to do whatever it took to get back on the field. Her courage and determination has inspired the whole team to adopt that whatever it takes attitude. Our other key returners and assistant captains are Maggie Keiffer, Melissa Hogan and Jackie Gipe.

This should be a very exciting season for the 2013 Saints and a big improvement over last year. We are still very young but this team has worked hard the entire off season and has really taken the “Whatever it takes” attitude to heart. Our main goal is “We want the next goal”!

The 2013 Saints are deep at the keeper position starting with returning starter Molly O’Connor. Lindsay Armstrong will push for playing time and they will be backed up by Cristal Kurkowski, 7

programs. After coaching a high school All-Star team against a team from France, Fales was offered the boy’s varsity assistant coaching position at Lansing Eastern High School. After a few years at Lansing Eastern, he was offered the varsity boy’s and girl’s head coaching job at Lansing Catholic High School. Fales went on to coach for 15 years at Lansing Catholic High School. In 1995 Fales was offered the head coaching position at Olivet College. The program was in great need of mending and Fales began to build the program. His first team, with no time prior to being hired to recruit, ended the season with just two wins. The next two years the team played .500 ball and the fourth year won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship. Those were busy years for Fales, who also continued to coach at Lansing Catholic Central during his years at Olivet College. He realized that he needed to spend more time with his family, so he resigned in 2000. It wasn’t long before Fales realized that he missed the day to day contact that goes along with being a coach.

Head Coach Mark Fales Head Coach Mark Fales is eagerly awaiting the 2013 soccer season and his 10th year directing the women’s soccer program. With over 26 years of coaching, Fales knows what it takes to be a champion. Fales led the Saints to a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championships in the 2007 and 2011 season. He has his sights on being a contender again this season and feels that he has the talent to make a run

Coach Fales was very familiar with Aquinas College, as his son, Zach Fales was a standout goalie for the men’s soccer team. Ironically, former Aquinas head coach Abraham Shearer had contacted Fales about one of his high school players. Fales says, “The timing was right. I was missing the game and Aquinas College had a coaching vacancy in their women’s program. I had always been so impressed with Aquinas College and after meeting with Athletic Director Terry Bocian, the rest was history. I met with the captains and we hit it off. Aquinas College is a gem in terms of so many facets; the education, the people, the facilities and the support. Grand Rapids is such a vibrant city and Lake Michigan is just a hop away.”

Fales shakes his head as he recollects how he became involved in soccer. “There was no soccer being played when I was in high school. I competed in football and wrestling. When my son was five, I became involved with his youth program. I studied the game, went to as many clinics as I could and completed the Youth Sports Institute that Michigan State University offered in 1984. I have always prided myself on being a hard worker and I became very involved in the Lansing area youth club

Assistant Coach Lisa Goldsmith

Assistant Coach Lisa Goldsmith enters her second year with the Aquinas Saints. Goldsmith is a California native, who moved with her husband and children to Rockford in 2009. She played college soccer at California State University, San Bernardino while obtaining her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. Here in Michigan, she is entering her second year as the JV Girls Soccer Head Coach for Rockford High School and is also the Assistant Varsity Coach. She also has been coaching with the Grand Rapids Crew Juniors for the past 2 years. She holds an Advanced Regional Diploma and State Goal Keeping Diploma through the NSCAA.

Jaime remains on the Aquinas College sidelines, but this time as an assistant coach. Tomaszewski prepped at Lake Fenton High School where she was a four year starter. Tomaszewski was named All-State four times and holds the single season (42) and career goals (142) record at Lake Fenton. Jaime started her collegiate career at Central Michigan and then transferred to Aquinas for her final three seasons of play. At Aquinas, Tomaszewski recorded 87 points including 33 goals and 22 assists. Jaime was twice named MVP, was a six-time WHAC Player of the Week and a three-time NAIA National Player of the Week recipient. Tomaszewski is a Secondary Education major with an emphasis in Social Studies and History.

Jaime Tomaszewksi

Rodger Garner

Rodger rejoins Aquinas this year as both the men's and women's goalkeeping coach. Rodger also currently serves as the varsity assistant head coach at East Kentwood HS for both men and women. EK's boys team has won the Division 1 state championship 3 times in the last 5 years. Many of his keepers have earned all-state honors and continued their careers at both the collegiate and professional levels. Rodger played at the University of Dayton before playing professionally for the indoor Dayton Dynamo, and semi pro with several teams. His youth coaching experience includes 2 State Cup championships and several league championships. He has also served as the director of coaching for two youth clubs. 9
