Sydney Opera House & The Holy Grail of Convergence The Sydney Opera House decided to get serious about its network. Building on an already substantial fibre optic backbone, all the House’s IP-based services have been consolidated into one network. Which means the network that delivers the email, sends tickets to audiences and hosts the Sydney Opera House website, is also the network that controls the stage lighting, and transports the audio in the Concert Hall. Then there are the telephones, the stage communications, digital signage – it’s all connected via the same infrastructure. Can’t be done! ? Well, it ‘wasn’t easy’ but ARUP Theatre consultant Ben Moore, SOH Head of Technical Support Cameron O’Neill, together with the Information Systems Network manager Nich Young explain how it was done, why it was done, as well as the advantages and challenges of life with one network.
