COUNCIL TAX - THE CHOICE:
A TWO YEAR TORY FREEZE OR A 25% INCREASE UNDER LABOUR
In partnership with a Conservative government, a Conservative-controlled council will freeze council tax for two years starting in 2011. In times of economic hardship for all, we believe this is the responsible thing to do for the people of our district. The alternative is Labour’s plan to re-band houses and increase council tax bills by as much as 25% for those who have improved their homes, enjoy a good view or have simply taken pride in their garden.
SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND BUSINESSES A Conservative council will revitalise the district’s economy, promote the local pound and support local businesses. We will do this by ensuring that, where possible, local suppliers are used for council contracts and obstacles to small businesses winning council work are overcome. We will generate new revenue within the district and through innovative business partnerships, ensure the council is working with local businesses to create new opportunities, stimulating our local economy.
ENDING A DECADE OF NEGLECT ON OUR ROADS
The Labour administration in Wakefield has allowed a 10 year backlog of road maintenance work to build up. In the recently approved council budget, no new investment was made into our roads in 2011/12 and beyond. The Conservatives have pledged to invest an additional £600k every year over the next three years to fix potholes and repair drains. We will also ensure the district’s cyclists are better provided for.
SCRAP ‘THE CITIZEN’ NEWSPAPER
Residents tell us ‘The Citizen’ is a waste of money and we agree. A Conservative council will immediately scrap the Citizen, saving more than £100,000.
ABOLISHING LABOUR’S STEALTH TAX on WASTE
We will abolish the new bulky waste collection charge and reinstate the free collection cut by Labour. We value our environment and this new stealth tax is nothing more than a fly-tippers charter.
NO MORE LUXURY FOR THE LEADER
Did you know the Labour leader of the council has a luxury car and driver, paid for by taxpayers? We will end this ridiculous luxury on day one.
