American University Swimming and Diving

2010-11 Review Both the nen’s and women’s teams were recognized by the NCAA for earning perfect Academic Progress Rate scores of 1,000. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress a team’s studentathletes. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and is a key measurement of each team’s academic performance. Additionally, AU was one of seven swimming and diving programs in the country to earn APR scores in top 10 percent on both men’s and women’s side.

For the 30th consecutive semester in the spring 2011 term, both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were named CSCAA ScholarAthlete Teams. In order to earn the honor, a team must have a 3.0 team GPA or higher in that given semester. Additionally, 18 members of the squads were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in the spring 2011 term.

Four AU swimmers were named to the All-Patriot League in 2010-11. Jessica Ballance, Eleanor Clay and Dory Isaacs were honored to the All-Patriot League First Team, while Ming Ong was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team. For Isaacs, the selection was the fourth straight of her career. In addition to their Patriot League success, Isaacs can be found on the AU all-time top-10 times in eight different events, while both Ballance and Clay have each claimed three top-10 spots. Ballance, Clay and Isaacs also formed part of the Patriot League Champion 400 medley relay (3:49.39), the first championship relay since 2003. Ong finished sixth-place in the Patriot League Championships in the 200 breast (2:03.47) and eighth in the 200 IM (1:52.74).

53 All-Patriot League Selections In 10 Years Since joining the Patriot League prior to the 200102 season, individual excellence has been a theme for the AU swimming and diving program. The success continued in 2010-11 with three more All-Patriot League First Team selections -- seniors Jessica Ballance, Eleanor Clay, and Dory Isaacs. Sophomore Ming Ong was also selected to the AllPatriot League Second Team. Ballance finished top-three in each individual event at the Patriot League Championships. Isaacs earned two-top three results while Clay was in the top-seven in three events. Together, they contributed to the first Patriot League Championship 400 medley relay since 2002. Ong rounds out the accolades with a sixth-place finish in the 200 breast and an eighth-place 200 IM.

Robert H. Frailey Competitive Pool The swimming pool inside the Reeves Aquatic Center was dedicated in honor of Robert H. Frailey in April of 1987. Frailey served as the head swim coach at American University for 16 seasons before taking the position of Director of Athletics, a title which he held for 23 years. As the swimming coach, Frailey guided his Eagles to six conference championships and never once had a losing season. After taking over as head of the Athletics Department, Frailey became one of the founding members of the Colonial Athletic Association and was a member of the NCAA Executive Committee. Frailey was also the man behind American’s move to the NCAA Division I level and helped to upgrade the entire athletics program.

Washington, D.C. The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Reflecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

American University Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life. Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital. The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors. Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fields. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.
