ans of the Simply Perfect store at the 8th & Railroad Center in Sioux Falls have even more to cheer about, with the opening of a new store addition to house Threads clothing and accessories. While Simply Perfect has offered clothing items for quite some time, customer requests for more helped shape the vision for the new Threads store, which opened on March 30. “We love being downtown,” says owner Penny Klinedinst, “so there was no hesitation when the opportunity came about to
expand our current space here at 8th and Railroad Center. The support from our customers and other downtown businesses has been wonderful, and it feels great to expand here and continue to be part of all the excitement in downtown Sioux Falls.” With summer right around the corner, Threads is ready to help you create a one-of-a-kind look. Whether it’s a comfortable strappy dress and sandals or cut off denim shorts and a tank with flip flops, there is something for women of all ages.

“One thing we know is that every woman wants to look good at every age,” says Klinedinst. “We look for clothing lines that provide quality and style at an affordable price.” The other goal for Threads, says Klinedinst, was to make it easy for women to shop. “We put a lot of thought into the flow of the new space. We wanted to make sure it was easy to move around and we focused on arranging the clothing to help show how different pieces can go together.” You’ll be ready for everything from family reunions to summer weddings with the variety of dress styles at Threads – tailored, casual, longer, shorter – along with plenty of layering options with jackets, lightweight sweaters and oversized scarves. To complete a head-to-toe look, you can pick from the basket of headwraps like the Boho Bandeau, and then pick a pair of flats with changeable decorative accents. For a more casual look for your feet, check out the Lindsey Phillips flip flops with the “Switch Flops” accents – interchangeable Velcro straps with different designs so you can create a flip-flop to match your mood or the occasion. Threads also wants to make sure you have a beautiful foundation for their comfort-meets-fashion clothing. One of the items that Klinedinst says has been flying off the shelf is the Coobie bra, a seamless bra that provides shape and support and can be worn in place of a camisole or tank top. I
f you consult Merriam-Webster for the word icon, you may see something like this: i-con (ī’ kŏn) - An image; a representation; an important and enduring symbol; a person or thing regarded as a symbol of a belief, nation, community or cultural movement. However, if you visit downtown Sioux Falls, you may find that Icon means a sleek, upscale entertainment spot that recently opened in a converted warehouse. Icon Lounge is the newest addition to a growing selection of entertainment options in the downtown area. Once a warehouse used for storage, this space in the Gourley Building transformed over the winter to a trendy atmosphere that evokes a big city feel. The meaning behind the name is felt inside and out – with exterior views of iconic Sioux Falls buildings like the Old Courthouse Museum Clock Tower and the spires of St. Joseph Cathedral and interior artwork depicting such cultural icons as Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon, Charlie Chaplin and Uncle Sam. Not only do these faces and more adorn the walls through classic photographs and artistic renderings, but their images are also projected on various scrims in the seating area, above the bar and on flat screens around the space. You can sink back into one of the many comfortable seating areas and watch for your favorites to appear. Icons are also honored through the lounge’s signature drink

For fans of You Tube pop culture, there’s even a drink named after the iconic “Honey Badger.” James Jacobson, a partner and president, says the Icon team is excited to bring this kind of venue to Sioux Falls. “We had the right people come together at the right time last fall,” Jacobson says. “Everyone brought their own specialties to the table, and we have been able to create a big city experience in a unique environment.” The design, largely the work of well-known local creative mind Kirby Schultz, pairs old and new together to create the look. Vintage chandeliers hang above the modern black leather seating spaces. The technology, such as the color-changing LED light strip along the bar, coexists nicely with the exposed brick and stone walls, open ceilings and still-present overhead warehouse doors. “We think that Icon Lounge offers something people haven’t seen in Sioux Falls before,” Jacobson says. “While we have that trendy and upscale look, the more important aspect at Icon is the service.” From the very beginning, Jacobson says, customer service has

They will be attending to help spread the word about “Fuel Up to Play 60,” an in-school program that encourages kids to choose nutrient-rich foods first, and get out and play at least 60 minutes every day. Kids can participate in Fuel Up to Play 60 activities with the athletes. The program was founded by the National Dairy Council and the NFL, in cooperation with the USDA. They were rather fond of another residence on the secluded street, but were not keen on the idea of purchasing a home that was inundated with stairs. “My 90 year-old mother, Luvy, lives with us and I promised her before we moved here that we would
buy a home with only one floor,” says Carroll. “When we told our realtor, Emmet Rogers, that we weren’t a fan of the stairs, but loved the neighborhood, he turned and pointed to a house a few doors down and said, ‘How about that one?’” The couple believes it to be kismet, as they found everything they could

I’m originally from Connecticut, so I had missed the trees and change of seasons. It’s been nice to be able to experience all of

It’s partially covered in brick, and is shrouded with trees and shrubs. However, step inside and perceptions quickly shift. The home is filled to the brim with pieces of furniture and décor that
has deemed the “media room,” features an impressive DVD library as well as Carroll’s award-winning seashell collection. “I feel like I was able to take some of the best parts of the beach with me to South Dakota,” notes Carroll. Another favorite room is Chris’ office, which is positioned directly behind the dining room. Its design aesthetic is equal

Sketches from his comic strip and children’s books he’s in the midst of writing can be found on his desk; while numerous small trinkets that hold special significance to Chris are located on a bookshelf near the door. The kitchen features light maple cabinets, granite countertops and a rustic-looking red armoire filled with different patterned vases. The dining room features a round wooden table from Pottery Barn. “You know that whole saying, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade? That’s kind of the story behind this table,” says Carroll. “A friend of ours was visiting us when we lived in Florida, and she accidentally got some mosquito cream on the table. It completely took the paint off. Shortly before we moved to South Dakota, I started to scour antique shops in Florida for vintage postcards of South Dakota. After I found a bunch of them, I glued them onto the table. After I was finished with that, I put a piece of glass over top. The craziest thing is that one of the postcards is from Sylvan Lake Lodge. The architect of that building was also the architect of this house, Harold Spitznagel.” The home has only gone though some minor transformations, beginning in the living room and extending all the way through to Luvy’s bedroom. “The first thing we did when we moved in was remove all the carpet in the living room because we have three dogs,” says Carroll. “And we knocked down a few walls in my mother’s bedroom to allow for more room. I couldn’t

have been more thrilled with that whole renovation process. In Florida, it took over 6 months to remodel our kitchen; however, the workers we hired in Sioux Falls, Krumvieda Construction, took less than two months. They would work rain or shine. It was incredible.” The last modification the couple made to the house was the addition of a pathway around the entire perimeter of the house. “We walk out there every day,” says Chris. “It’s our little exercise routine. Our dogs walk out there all the time too. In fact, they will only walk on the pathway. They won’t even step foot on the grass anymore.” One of the couple’s preferred ways to characterize their home is with a Serena and Lily postcard they found years ago. It states: “We travel, we collect, we arrange, we rearrange, we mix the old with the new; the bought with the found; the passed-down with the picked-up-along-the-way. We create these beautiful little galleries throughout our homes that express our passions and curiosities to all who pass through and then, we start all over again.” Chris and Carroll have transformed a typical home into their dream home with some minor modifications and a whole lot of love for the space as well as the city for which it’s located. South Dakota is where they settled to enjoy the finer parts of life and maybe after a while “Hagar the Horrible” will turn into “Hagar the Slightly Miffed”.

14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk 6 Tbsp key lime juice 2 cups heavy whipping cream, whipped 1 graham cracker crust (9 inch)
Jen’s husband, John, treated us to one of the best banana cakes I have ever tasted. It must have been good as it was gone before noon! If you choose to make a layered cake, bake it for 35-37 minutes and double the frosting recipe. Either way you serve this cake it is sure to please. Thanks Jen!
Combine milk and lime juice in a large bowl. Set aside 1/4 cup whipped cream in the refrigerator for garnish. Slowly fold in a fourth of the remaining whipped cream into the lime mixture...now, once again, slowly fold in the remaining whipped cream. Spoon into the crust and cover and freeze 8-10 hours. Garnish with reserved whipped cream and a slice of lime if desired. Serves 6-8.
1 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup oil 1 tsp soda 1 tsp vanilla 2 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1 tsp baking powder 2 cups flour 3 ripe bananas, smashed Mix all ingredients together and pour into a greased 9x13 inch pan and bake at 350˚ for 40 minutes. Frosting: 1 cup powdered sugar 8 ounce package cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla Mix all ingredients together and spread over cooled cake. Store in the refrigerator.

n late 2008, when the economy started to go south, most of the fine folks in the U.S. started to tighten their belts. We here in the greater Sioux Falls metro area didn’t see a lot of the effects of the recession. There were no foreclosures in my neighborhood (at least that I knew of ). I didn’t lose my job. And 95.2% of you didn’t lose your jobs. But we all tightened our fiscal belts. We cut back on the “luxuries”. Any of the stuff we thought we could do without, went away. Among those luxuries we trimmed were our meals at restaurants.

Across the U.S., restaurants saw business drop more than 15 percent. It wasn’t just fine dining places either. The “special occasion” kind of places were hit hard, but the casual dining spots like Applebee’s and Chili’s saw declines as well. Many speculated that as families reined in their spending, our special occasion meals shifted from the white tablecloth restaurants to the mid-priced places. And the weekly meals at casual chains slid down to the fast food joints. The quick meal at a drive-thru became a grilled cheese sandwich at home. Every segment of the restaurant business suffered. While the “Great Recession” is hardly forgotten, we as a nation have started to loosen our belts again, and that means we’re going out more often. If you’re one of the people who still has a tight grip on the purse-strings, let me give you a few reasons to go out tonight. What would you think if I told you eating out is cheaper than eating at home? You’d think I was crazy, right? There are times when you really can save money by letting someone else do the cooking. For example, what would it cost to make four cheeseburgers? Probably $4 for the ground beef, 3 bucks

for 8 buns (half of which will go to waste) and another couple bucks for cheese. We’ll assume you’ve got pickles and ketchup already, so about ten bucks should do it. Or you could hit the Mickey D’s drive through and get four hot and juicy double cheeseburgers for under $5, tax included. How can that be? The food industry has people who track the changes in the cost of food at restaurants versus food at the grocery store and for most of the last year, the prices at the local supermarket have been going up faster than the cost of meals away from home. When the restaurant business was soft, the response was to offer great deals. Dollar menus, “two-fers” and discounts popped up just about everywhere that sells food. And the deals are still out there. So if you’re the kind of person who clips coupons for Cheerios and Miracle Whip, you can find those same kinds of deals on the menus around town. But I think there are two other reasons to go out tonight. First, you deserve it. A nice dinner out is the perfect treat, whether it is a reward for making it through the week or because it’s Tuesday. Heck, just by surviving the great recession, you’ve earned a little pampering.

Next, the economy needs your help. When things were looking bleak back in 2009, we all did what instinctively felt right; we scrimped and saved. But that meant fewer goods were sold, which meant more people lost their jobs and the fiscal crisis deepened. What we should have done was continue to spend. Locally Owned? With the economy in mind, you may think you want to eat somewhere that is locally owned. And that’s great, but be careful how you define “locally owned.” It’s easy to point to a place like Minerva’s as local, or the Chinese place on the corner. At our favorite Oriental spot, the owner greets you at the door — that’s locally owned. But what about the chains? Most people don’t think of Applebee’s, Carino’s or Ruby Tuesday as being “local”, but those restaurants in Sioux Falls are all owned by people who live right here—in Sioux Falls. What’s more they all hire local cooks, waiters and bartenders. The fast-feeders like McDonald’s, Burger King and Taco John’s? Local, local, and local. And they all use local banks, accountants and ad agencies. The truth is when you eat at just about any restaurant in the Sioux Empire, the biggest chunk of the money you spend stays right here at home, creating jobs for people who live right in your neighborhood. When you add up all of the bistros, bars, grills, take-out pizzerias and steakhouses, the food industry is a pretty big business made up of a whole lot of small ones. And whether you order pizza or sushi, tacos or appetizers, you’re helping those businesses to hire more people and create more jobs. Plus you get a nice relaxing meal that someone else cooked. So what do you say, should we go out tonight? Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

meet once a week with a group of men who are all 40 years old (I turn 40 later this year and have been inducted into this esteemed “gang” early.) We meet at Starbuck’s and talk about life, from a guy’s point of view. One of my friends asked for my opinion on box wine, and as I was starting to answer, another one of my friends responded, “My wife loves it; she drinks three boxes a week…” Now, I don’t condone 3 boxes a week, or even 1 box for that matter, but what I do condone is proper wine and food pairing. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things to do. Food and wine go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly, Lucy and Ricky, or a horse and carriage. Much like a marriage, wine and food complement each other, making up flavors the other lacks, and sometimes even creating a new flavor together that doesn’t exist individually. I love experimenting with different foods and wines because I like both things, and if you’re anything like me, you learn more from the mistakes you make than the pairings you

get right. Here are my top 5 best and worst wine pairings. Note: I picked only stellar bottles (representing a diverse range of prices) and the pairing information should hold true regardless of how much you spend on a bottle. Consult with your local wine store for pricing and other suggestions.
2. Cabernet Sauvignon
1. Champagne
Big Cabs are the giants of the wine world: Be careful, or they will stomp all over your pairing. With strong berry-filled explosions and chewy tannins, Chimney Rock Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stag’s Leap District in Napa Valley has tons of cherry flavor and a powerful thickness in texture, typical of high-end Cabs that need careful consideration at the dinner table.
Sparkling wines are perpetually food-friendly. Bubbles wake up the taste buds and Champagne, specifically, is blended from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the lesser-known Pinot Meunier. Veuve Clicquot from Reims (the birthplace of Dom Perignon) is light on its feet, exemplifying the healthy acidity and freshness found in the best bubblies.
WORST PAIRING Pan-Seared Sole with Winter Vegetables Filet of sole, like flounder or any white flaky fish, is delicate, and will not only get lost, it will actively sour when it hits your Cabernet’s dense texture.
WORST PAIRING Chocolate Cake with Buttercream A frequent wine-pairing mistake: cake and bubbly. The Champagne is relatively tart, the cake is super-sweet… it’s chaos in your mouth.
BEST PAIRING Ribeye Steak with Red Wine Sauce It’s almost a no-brainer, but red wine and beef is a classic match. A big, bold Cabernet helps soften tannins which make the flavor of the steak that much better.
BEST PAIRING Spicy Asian Noodle and Chicken Salad Champagne, when light, dry, and acidic, elegantly cuts through the spices in Asian food; dishes with nuts bring out the nutty flavors in some Champagnes like Pommery.
3. Pinot Noir Ever since the movie Sideways, Pinot Noir has been riding a wave of popularity as the easy-drinking light red. It’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t like a fruity, lower-tannin wine with a slight hint of earthiness, but that doesn’t mean it can go with everything. nice floral bouquet and an appealing strawberry flavor. WORST PAIRING Chicken with Tarragon Vinegar Sauce The herb vinegar in this dish dampens the wine’s fruitiness. Dishes with acidic finishes do not pair well with Pinot Noir.
BEST PAIRING Seared Sea Bass with Fresh Herbs and Lemon This dish has the same citrus and herb profile as the wine, but complementary (the seared skin bits contrast nicely with the fruit flavors).
5. Chardonnay BEST PAIRING Chicken Breast with Squash, Yams, and Apricots Any recipe with mild, even flavors like this one with fruit and sweet veggies will bring out Pinot Noir’s essential flavors.
Burgundian-style Chardonnay — the classic white grape subtly aged in oak — has taken a public relations hit in recent years. Oak is out. But at its best, as in the Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, the wood is a fully integrated part of the taste.
4. Sauvignon Blanc
WORST PAIRING Spicy Lamb and Chorizo Chili The heaviness of meat and the spice’s heat make the wine seem unbearably oaky.
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wins over fans with its tart brilliance. Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a good example of the bold, grapefruit-forward style that works with many dishes — but not all of them. It’s got a long finish, suggesting more serious winemaking than its modest price would indicate. WORST PAIRING Brussel Sprouts, Blue Cheese, and Glazed Pecan Salad Blue cheese is tough with any wine — and the slightly sweet pecans make the wine taste more tart than it really is. You can’t have two bold flavors competing.

I
write this to my personal shame. There was a span of about 30 years when I didn’t venture west for adventures in my own state. Oh, I ventured, I just ventured elsewhere and besides, I reasoned – I had been to the Black Hills when I was a kid. I had been there, and I had done that, and I had great memories from those trips. The Hills were for loud motorcyclists, children, hunters and skiers. While I have been some of those things, I was no longer and therefore, the left side of the state was
for others. You head west; I‘ll go east. Or south. Perhaps even north. But in May of 2008, an admission to my bride of my lack of west-river travels resulted in a refresher course, and my eyes have been opened once again to this wonderful region. We have visited this part of the state annually since then, and all have been great trips, but the trip that has brought pen to paper was in 2011, with an adventurous and wide-eyed three-year-old

traveling partner. We had been offered press credentials to witness the Buffalo Roundup & Arts Festival in Custer, South Dakota. The weather was forecasted to be ideal, and with our young man, we headed west. The trip across South Dakota from Sioux Falls to the Black Hills could be an easy one to forget unless you stop at some of the state’s finest tourist attractions. Al’s Oasis and Wall Drug.
Al’s is one-of-a-kind, and they continue their great tradition of having everything for want or need at half-time, including some of the best pie in the state. They also have a fine selection of souvenir items you don’t need, but may want, especially if you are three years old. We saw some old friends at Al’s, also headed to the Roundup, which is to be expected as life-long SoDak residents. What wasn’t expected was to see those same old friends as we

headed into Wall Drug to see the giant jack-a-lope, and have some free ice water, and then to see them again in the press area at the Roundup. Expected, no, but pretty cool. It is fairly unlikely for that to happen in too many other states. Once in Custer, we found our cabin peaceful and ideal, with a babbling creek and a climbing hill behind us, and four or five deer waking up with us every morning. On the morning prior to the actual roundup, we were invited to take a tour of the park with several guides and rangers and other members of the press. With cameras and note pads, about 30 of us ventured into parts of the park that are usually off limits. Our crew included a group of one journalist and seven photographers from France, and husband and wife newspaper team from England, and the publisher of the Freeman, S.D. Currier. The wide range of reporters, photographers and rangers felt right, and the conversations and questions fit in very well with the changing landscape and the infinite varieties of plant and animal life. I highly doubt, yet still wonder, if the genius minds that were behind the Savannah-like Eden that is western South Dakota’s Custer State Park realized that Highway 16 and 16 A surrounding their park creation looks exactly like the continent of Africa. And why shouldn’t it? Africa, or course, is home to the greatest of migrations, the 1.5 million wildebeests who continually move

Our great plains were once sort of an Africa, with between 30 and 60 million bison roaming freely over them, along with all of the other wildlife that followed them, hunted them, or forged ahead of them. Those days are tragically gone forever, but a glimpse of those days can still be seen and felt every fall at Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup & Arts Festival. The actual roundup serves a very important purpose as far as the bison are concerned. Although the park is more than 70,000 acres, it can only sustain so many animals, approximately 1,300 bison, along with the other grasseating mammals. When conditions are good, there are many more bison than can be sustained, so they must be rounded up and managed. Each fall between 2 and 500 getting sold to start a ranch, or to enhance an existing herd. All of the bison sold are completely weaned off their mothers, and none of the bulls are sold. The bulls are too big to fit in the pens, and not too thrilled with being told what to do.
Here are some tips for enjoying the Roundup: 1. Get there early. Like a day or two early. The Arts Festival is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 22-23, 2012. The actual roundup is Monday, September 24. It is a good idea to get there early for that as well. You want to get a good seat right up toward the fence. And, the bison tend to do as they choose, so predicting when they may herd past your perch is difficult to predict. 2. Bring supplies. Chairs, food, water, rain cover, shade, etc. You will be sitting and waiting for more than 1,000 animals to run by you, next to more than 10,000 folks who want to see the same thing you do. If you have the above items, you can do what we should have done, which is enjoy the roundup and then sit back, have a picnic lunch and wait for the traffic to slowly move out of the park before attempting to venture on our way.

A
lex Espenson’s best friend noticed it first. The nine-year-old Windom, Minn. boy was sitting in class when his buddy leaned over and pointed to his neck. Up until that point it had been just an ordinary day in school. Sometime during his teacher’s lessons that early
December afternoon, a vein on the side of Alex’s neck suddenly popped out. “It was weird,” says the quiet third-grade student who doesn’t talk much, but loves to play sports, especially hockey. “I didn’t know what to think.” Alex’s parents took him to Sanford pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, Dr. Patrick Munson, who diagnosed the condition as a lymphatic vascular anomaly. An area in Alex’s throat containing his lymph nodes had not formed properly before his birth. The malformation didn’t show up until an underlying infection caused it to suddenly bulge out, says Dr. Munson.
A Common Problem While Alex’s specific type of vascular anomaly is unusual, vascular birthmarks and anomalies are very common. One in every 10 children in the United States is born with a vascular birthmark. Blood vessels that form abnormally can cause a variety

of conditions, says Dr. Munson, the only fellowship-trained ENT doctor in the region to specialize in pediatric care. Some young people experience hemangiomas, raised birthmarks, while others may have masses formed by a bulging blood vessel. A vascular malformation like Alex had occurs in about 1 in 10,000 people, the doctor said. Dr. Munson, whose practice includes management of ear conditions, chronic sinusitis and allergies, sleep apnea, head and neck masses, disorders of the airway, vascular birthmarks and cleft lip and palate, says that there are a variety of surgical treatments available today for pediatric patients with vascular anomalies.

Preventing Complications In Alex’s case, the mass on his neck was not only unattractive, but could pose future health issues. The bulge could continue to grow, blocking off the boy’s breathing or his ability to swallow. Unless the anomaly was completely removed, Alex would run the risk of continuing problems and further infections.” “A large mass like that in the neck can be dangerous because it has several important structures surrounding it” Dr. Munson said. “Removing it requires specialized training in vascular anomalies and birthmarks.” During a nearly four-hour surgery, the ENT specialist made an incision in Alex’s neck, removing a mass that was quite large — nine centimeters by six centimeters. The goal was to remove the malformed lymphatic tissue before it swelled further and or put any further pressure on Alex’s trachea or facial nerves.

Today, Alex shows no signs of the large bulge in his throat. Looking at “before” pictures in Dr. Munson’s office, it’s hard to believe that the images depict the same child, says Alex’s mother, Cindy Espenson. And his family knows that the changes of the problem reoccurring are slim. “It’s nice to know that we don’t have to worry about it coming back,” says Cindy, putting her hand on his shoulder. Her son says the worst part of the whole experience was having to miss hockey practice for a few weeks while his neck healed. He watches the doctor trace the spot on the photographs marking the bulging mass, displaying a shy smile. “I’m glad it’s gone,” he says, simply. “I can play again.” Screening. Knowledge. Scheduling.

What you need: Brown marker, various colors of tissue paper, light blue paper, and glue. Directions: Using the blue paper as your canvas, draw some tree branches with a brown marker. Show your child how to scrunch the tissue paper up into small balls, forming colorful “flowers” for the tree branch. Dip the tissue flowers into some glue, and stick them onto the paper near and on the tree branch to create a blossoming tree branch!

Plastic Jug Watering Can
What you need: Glass goldfish globe, soil, aquarium gravel, decoration such as a small plastic toy, and your choice of succulents.
What you need: 1/2 gallon plastic jug with a handle and a lid, hammer, a small finishing screw or nail, and decorations such as stickers, paint, or permanent markers.
Directions: Fill your glass globe, which will be your terrarium, with a couple of inches of aquarium gravel. Next, take your plant and carefully remove it from its container, gently breaking up the root ball. Help your child set the plant in the center of your terrarium and fill the surrounding area with soil. This may be a messy job, so if possible, do this outdoors. Have your child choose their favorite plastic toys and place them into the terrarium. Items such as small plastic sea creatures, people, animals, or plants work perfectly in the terrarium environment. Make sure to water the plant as needed, and teach your child how to care for the plant. They will feel responsible and happy to have a creation of their own to look after.

Directions: After carefully washing out the plastic jug, poke some holes in the lid of the jug with the tip of a finishing nail or screw and a hammer. Have your child decorate the jug with their choice of stickers, paint, or markers. Keep in mind the longevity of the decoration choice. Fill the jug with water and put the lid back on. Hold the jug by the handle and show your child how to tip it so that the water will sprinkle onto the flowers.

Potato-Stamp Shirt What you need: A light-colored shirt made of washable cotton, a large russet potato, a cookie cutter, paper towels, a craft stick, fabric paint, a paper plate, and a piece of cardboard. Directions: Slice a potato in half the long way, and place your choice of cookie cutter on the white side of one of the halves. Push the cutter through the potato, then break away the excess. Remove the potato from the cutter and blot away any moisture using a paper towel. Spread a thin layer of fabric paint on a paper plate with a craft stick. Dip the potato shape into the paint, moving it around for an even coating. If any paint gets on the sides of the potato, wipe it off with a paper towel. Take a piece of cardboard and place it inside a washable cotton shirt. Stamp the potato shape onto the shirt and press firmly for at least five seconds. Make sure to let the paint dry before adding any other stamps to the design.

What you need: Paper plate, fabric or felt, glue, sky blue paint, scissors, material for a nest such as feathers, hay, and wool. Directions: Cut a piece of fabric or felt into the shape of a bird. Paint the top half of a paper plate to look like the sky. Glue the bird onto the middle of the plate. Spread glue onto the bottom half of the paper plate, adding feathers, hay, wool, and any other materials that resemble a bird nest. Cut out some egg shapes from felt or fabric and glue them into the nest material on the bottom half. Take this craft to the next level and draw clouds, branches, and sunshine in the background for added decoration.

into a home in which they would raise their family. “It turned out to be a happy coincidence,” says Kendra. “After we moved all of our furniture in here, and got settled, we really fell in love with this house.” When it came time to decorate their 8 month-old daughter’s nursery, Kendra didn’t clip pictures out of magazines nor did she scour the internet for countless hours looking for cute ways to decorate it. In fact, she was undecided on most everything pertaining to the room, including an overall theme. She was, however, very adamant about one thing: the color. For years, she had dreamt that one day her child’s room would be a vibrant shade of aqua blue. Her mentality was that once the walls were painted that particular color, everything else would follow suit. “The wall color was the only thing that I knew I wanted when I started the process of decorating the room,” says Kendra. “It’s my favorite color. I didn’t want an overly girly room; I just wanted something fun and colorful. I also knew that I would be spending a lot of time in there, especially late at night, so I wanted to make sure that it was something that I enjoyed as well.”

A few months prior to her daughter Allison’s arrival, Kendra purchased the Oeuf crib and dresser, Stokke changing table, and the Posh Tots rocking chair. However, when it came to filling the room with art and other décor items, she was unsure of exactly which direction to go. Fortunately for her, she was able to rely heavily upon her sister Hilary for help. Hilary went to school for design in Oklahoma and has worked in the field for several years. In May 2011, Hilary came to Sioux Falls for a week to help her sister decorate the nursery. “If I had tried to do the entire room myself, I know I would have ended up with all one color and picked out only a few things for the walls,” says Kendra. “I did manage to pick out the furniture and the wall

color by myself, but my sister did everything else. She made the mobile, the paintings on the wall, and chose a majority of the décor items. I’d have to say that she was extremely instrumental in how this room turned out.” Neither Kendra nor Hilary wanted a generic looking nursery, so they opted to try to make the space as eccentric, funky and fun as possible. Upon walking through the door of Allison’s room and seeing all of the various details, you can see they were successful in their feat. The pink elephant and blue circle fabric on the windows, which was purchased in bulk at a fabric store and sewn into curtains, provides a perfect complement to the brightly colored walls. The yellow lamp that sits on top of the dresser adds a sunny disposition to the space. It also looks perfectly synchronized with the color of the walls. “I went down to Tulsa to visit my sister when I was six months pregnant,” says Kendra. “We were in a vintage furniture store, kind of looking around for things to go in the nursery. My sister spotted that lamp and fell in love with it. She knew that I wanted to have bright blue walls and just thought it would be perfect in the space.” Kendra’s mother bestowed a large Raggedy Ann doll that sits near the crib. It once belonged to Kendra and her sisters when they were growing up; however, shortly after Kendra found out she was pregnant, her mother insisted that she have it for the nursery. “My mother gave me this doll shortly after I found out I was having a girl,” says Kendra. “It’s kind of neat that my daughter will be able to play with something that I had as a child.” Kendra, Hilary and Michael cleverly added a picture rail around the entire length of the room. The picture rail is a fun way to display art and photos. “We painted one rail white and stained the other one to match the wood in the room,” says Kendra. “Hilary and my husband used a nail gun and put them up. It’s one of my favorite things about the room now.” Hilary and Kendra’s collaborative effort resulted in a nursery that has its own distinct charm and personality. They wove unique details into the design of the room by mixing handmade items and vintage pieces together. involve pollen, mold or dust that’s in the air, pet dander, food such as milk or peanuts, medications or insect bites. An allergy is when the immune system responds to something that’s foreign to the body. The immune system is designed to protect the body against harmful organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. But in a person with allergies, the immune response is also triggered by things other than infections. When the immune system recognizes an allergen, it triggers a response involving histamine. For this reason, most allergy symptoms have to do with a histamine response, such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, rashes, hives, swelling or watery eyes. Dr. Schimelpfenig says the allergic reaction is most likely to happen to the part of the body that comes into contact with the allergen. “If a child is allergic to a certain food, she might experience hives or itching around the mouth,” he said. If the allergen is something that’s breathed in through the airways, it’s more likely to cause sneezing or runny nose. Rather than a true allergy, symptoms like an upset stomach, diarrhea or cramps more likely are a sign of an adverse reaction to a certain food that gets labeled as an allergy, Dr.
Schimelpfenig said. “Food allergies usually involve a protein in food that the body is sensitive to, for example, in milk and peanuts,” he said. A severe allergic reaction to allergens such as bee stings or peanuts is called “anaphylaxis,” and these reactions must be treated with epinephrine, which can be life saving when given right away. When a severe allergy is discovered, the person must carry an EpiPen which injects this medicine. Life-threatening reactions most often involve the swelling of the airways, limiting or blocking breathing. It may take one bad reaction to know your child has a severe allergy, Dr. Schimelpfenig said. Or, those with a family history of allergies might want to have their children tested before they are ever exposed. Because of the severity of peanut allergies, doctors recommend that peanut butter not be given to any child under the age of 1. Asthma is not an allergic reaction, but allergies can trigger an asthma attack. What’s more, some people have a “trio” of asthma, eczema and allergies. “One does not cause the other, but if you have one, you’re more likely to have the others,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said.

An allergic reaction may happen the first time a child is exposed to an allergen, or the second or third time, after the immune system is sensitized. “A bigger reaction can build with time,” Dr. Schimelpfenig said. Or, an allergy can develop later in life. Allergies involving dust, pollen or mold are treated with antihistamines – medications which block histamines from being released. These may be oral medications, eye drops, or nasal spray. Often, doctors are not able to pinpoint the exact allergen through allergy testing, but because treatment is the same even if the allergen is unknown, it’s not always necessary for the child to undergo lots of testing for this type of allergy. In comparison, it’s good to identify the exact allergen involving a food allergy, so that food can be avoided. Dr. Schimelpfenig said blood tests for the common allergens can be conducted in your pediatrician’s or family doctor’s office. If the child needs tests for multiple allergens, suffers from several allergies, or doesn’t respond to the typical treatment options, he or she is referred to an allergist. ith apologies to the Peace Corps, the slogan “the toughest job you’ll ever love,” really best applies to motherhood. After all, in the Peace Corps there are no 3 AM feedings in year one or midnight worrying in year 18. But with all its trials, tribulations and stresses, there is no better reward than raising healthy, happy, welladjusted people who love you unconditionally - even when you occasionally wear “mom-pants”. To honor Mother’s Day and moms everywhere, we sat down this month with Betty Barto-Smith. Betty is a Certified Family Life Educator with Avera Children’s Hospital. Along with her formal training and 20 years in parenting education, Betty also has extensive on-the-job experience raising three grown sons. We discussed the challenges of motherhood, its infinite rewards, and why the little voice in my head is so reassuring.

From the outside looking in, the job of mom seems to be one tough, demanding gig. Long hours, limited sleep, lots of stress. Why would anyone sign up for it? (laughs) Well, sometimes it’s not a conscious decision. Motherhood is a wonderful gift but it can be one that comes unexpectedly. But to answer your question, it can be hard, and it will challenge you every day, but because it is hard, it is also extraordinarily rewarding. Like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it.
How has being a new mom changed over the years? In the past 30 years there has really been a revolution in the role. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, women felt empowered to get out in the work force and develop themselves professionally. With that came the explosion of day care and more and more moms had to deal with the work/life challenges that come with it. Now, economically having mom work isn’t so much a choice as it is a necessity, so that can create further complications.
When new moms go back to work, taking their baby to day care can be such a difficult thing. What advice do you have for moms going through that? It is stressful and there’s no way to completely eliminate that.
But using the time during pregnancy and maternity leave to research potential day care providers and become comfortable with your choice helps a great deal. Take the time to interview providers, check credentials, references, and licensing. Build that relationship ahead of time, so when the day comes it won’t be quite so difficult.
There is a quote out there that says, the best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. Agree? Absolutely. Having that support and love is a wonderful thing. Today it seems like the role of dad gets discounted sometimes, but being a good dad makes being a good mom that much easier. With the modern family where both parents work, the old traditional roles get blurred quite a bit. Dads do the laundry and moms mow the lawn because that’s how it gets done - and that’s great.
With job, kids, home, and family to take care of, it’s easy for moms to spend all their energy on others and neglect themselves. What are some ways moms can carve out some healthy “me” time? I wish I had a magic answer for that. If we could invent a daystretcher to give us a couple more hours every day that would

be wonderful, but that’s not going to happen. Moms put out a lot of energy and the last person on their priority lists is usually themselves, but it is important to carve out a little sanity time. This is where the support system and good planning come in. Maybe dad does bath time while mom relaxes, or maybe it’s a trip to the gym while the kids are at school. Anything really that allows you to clear your mind, even if it’s only 30 minutes.

What’s the best advice or trait you received from your mom? My mother died when I was young so my grandmother raised me. I guess the biggest thing I learned from her was the importance of earning things. We all want to give our kids everything within our means - that’s natural - but it’s so important to teach them that if they want something, they have to earn it. When you are given everything, nothing has value. That lesson has served me well and I hope I’ve passed that on to my sons.
(smiles) Yes, that’s a great way to unwind.
In the next few weeks a lot of moms are getting ready to watch their kids graduate from high school or college. What advice do you have for mothers who are looking at an empty or emptier nest? After we dropped my oldest son off at college, I cried for days. It’s tough but it’s all part of the process. It dawned on me that I would always be his mom, but never be his mother again. He’ll always look to me for love and support, but I won’t ever be that central figure in his life again. They are beginning their own life journey and that’s hard for mom because you’ve put a lot into getting them there. The tears are going to come, but the important thing is to look at the grown person you’ve helped to create and take comfort in the fact that you’ve prepared them well.
Last thing. I’m hoping you can explain something for me. How come the little voice I hear in my head when I’m making a life decision sounds an awful lot like my mom? (laughs) Because you are a lucky guy! It proves what I said earlier, that she’ll always be your mom and no matter how old you are, that voice will speak to you and provide comfort and guidance. You know your mom has no agenda other than your best interest and that voice you hear is her forever gift to you. This article is dedicated to Marilyn Nichols. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Don’t worry. pring came early this year! The ticks and fleas that bother our pets have also arrived early. We are already seeing larger numbers of these pests, than we have in entire summers in the past. I have to say, ticks are not my favorite thing. They rate down at the bottom of my list, right next to skunks. I am amazed at how they can get onto your body, walk around and not even get noticed. I know for a fact I did not rub my head on anything, but you can find a tick there looking for a free lunch. Then there are the poor pets that become their victims. My dogs cannot help themselves. Dogs are wired to put their noses where they don’t belong. This curiosity puts them in tall grass and bushes where the ticks lay in waiting. They want a juicy meal and that is our pets. Dogs and cats are at a disadvantage, because they do not have thumbs. (If dogs or cats had thumbs, the world would be a different place.) They have no way of grabbing the tick to remove it. That is where we come in. If there is a tick attached to your best friend, you need to get it out. There are many home remedies, and most of them are dangerous to you or your pet. It is best to firmly grab them as near to the skin as possible, slowly and firmly pull away and most ticks will release. It is important to thoroughly wash your hands after removing it. Safely dispose of it in a sealed jar, baggy or garbage sack. They will crawl away if there is no lid or seal. Watch the area of the tick bite for signs of infection. We always worry about a rash or paint brush hemorrhage in the area. You may also see a discharge, fever or pain after a tick has attached to you or your pet. We have a great concern about Lyme disease, but ticks can also carry a wide variety of bacteria or viruses. As always, prevention is always better than treatment. There are a wide variety of products on the market to keep our pets safe. Some are better than others. The old standby flea and tick collars are the weakest protection. I prefer using the newer products that are much stronger, water resistant and most importantly safer for your pets. Novartis has introduced a new topical called Parastar, and it has the popular medication fipronil of Frontline and added Permethrins to repel ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. It is priced very competitively and is very effective. I always recommend asking your Veterinarian. If you travel to lake country, hunt or exercise where there is wildlife, I strongly recommend vaccinating for Lyme disease. The lake regions of Minnesota and Wisconsin have an extremely high incidence of Lymes. If you are not vaccinated, you are probably going to get it from the ticks. Enjoy the great outdoors this spring, but keep your friends protected from ticks and fleas.

THE FIFTH MOUND
etween 300 to 1000 A.D., stone-age people of the Late Woodland culture lived nearby. They were among the first permanent residents of Sioux Falls. Proof of their existence is provided by the line of five burial mounds that they built here. T. H. Lewis sketched these mounds in his 1884 survey map. The Eminija Mounds near Brandon, these Sherman Park mounds, and several other scattered mounds are the earliest evidence of past occupation by humans in Minnehaha County. Very few of these mounds were excavated by archeologists. Some were constructed to be the final resting place for only one person, presumed to be someone of high rank. Others contained the remains of several humans, perhaps village elders or persons of stature. In the 1940s amateurs excavated and destroyed the fifth mound. After removing burial goods and some skeletal remains, smaller bones were reburied, and a quartzite slab was left to mark the mound’s former site. In 2001 as a gesture of reconciliation and goodwill to area Native Americans, the fifth mound was rebuilt under the direction of the Minnehaha County Historical Society.

Rebuilding the Fifth Mound, 2001 Led by Eagle Scout candidate Jacob Mentele, in 2001 the boys and parents of Sioux Falls Boy Scout Troop 152 rebuilt the fifth mound. Dr. L. Adrien Hannus of the Augustana College Archeology Lab supervised the Minnehaha County Historical Society project. At the request of the MCHS, the Park Department decreased the width of the macadam park road that divided the fifth mound and its adjoining mound. Human bones were uncovered when the blacktop was removed, and these remains were then respectfully reburied in the fifth mound.
