CITY OF NEW BEDFORD JONATHAN F. MITCHELL, MAYOR

Welcome to the Zeiterion Theatre, one of the premiere performance venues in New England. Greater New Bedford is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, beautiful parks and beaches, a national park, a leading arts college, a world famous Whaling Museum, and numerous galleries, shops, and restaurants. It's no wonder that the Atlantic Monthly named New Bedford one of the "most artistic" cities in America. Here at The Z, in the center of it all, residents and visitors alike will experience a wide variety of performances by world-class artists, entertainers, and story tellers. The theme of this season is "Heartbeat," and I can't think of a more appropriate word to describe The Z. This historic theater is the cultural heart of Greater New Bedford, a region rich in physical beauty, cultural diversity, and economic vitality. From our preeminence in whaling, abolitionism, and textiles, to our current status as the top commercial fishing port in America, there is truly no place like it anywhere. Here at the Zeiterion Theatre, in the center of it all, the beat goes on. Enjoy!

Jon Mitchell

HISTORY OF THE Z

O

n April 2, 1923, New Bedford opened its last new theatre in the city’s downtown area – THE ZEITERION. Built for the “live performance of vaudeville”, it opened with “Troubles of 1922” starring and written by George Jessel. Barney Zeitz and his brothers built the $800,000 Zeiterion with the intention it be the biggest and best theatre in New Bedford. The two story tapestry brick building, designed by Frank Leary and Frank Walker, is an adaption of the Georgian Revival style. Inside, the decorative shield with the family’s “Z” logo and marble columned walls dominated the lobby. The Morning Mercury described the auditorium as “Impressive in its beauty.” The color scheme was ivory and old rose; silk tapestry on the walls, a frieze of gold leaf Grecian dancing figures; a large oval sunset scene on the ceiling, an orchestra rail of solid gum wood, and a $7,000 cut glass Czechoslovakian chandelier. The theatre did not meet with immediate success and by September 1923 it had closed briefly and reopened that month as the STATE, a silent movie house. Its first film was the New England premiere of D. W. Griffith’s, “The White Rose”. From this point on the STATE would feature only occasional live performances. Five world premieres were held at the STATE. The most important premiere was the 1956 opening of “Moby Dick” complete with Gregory Peck in attendance, a Time magazine souvenir issue and a white whale that terrified audiences everywhere. The STATE was modernized in 1971. Marble walls were covered with wood paneling, chandeliers in the lobby were removed, contemporary rocking seats replaced original leather and black paint replaced ivory and old rose. On December 31, 1981, the Penler Brothers of Paragon Travel donated the theatre portion of the building to the Waterfront Historic Area League (WHALE) who provided $200,000 for the first phase of restoration and commissioned a feasibility study. Once one of 17 operating theatres in New Bedford, the Zeiterion has been restored to its original grandeur. It is reborn as the symbol of an age when theatres were truly palaces for the people. The ZEITERION held it’s gala-reopening on September 25, 1982 starring Shirley Jones in Concert. To become eligible for major state funding for restoration, WHALE transferred title of the theatre to the City of New Bedford. The building is now managed and maintained by The Zeiterion Theatre, Inc. 30

The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. His books Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day and, the latest, Theft by Finding, are just some of the titles of his collection, now in more than 10 million copies in 25 languages. OCTOBER 29 It’s double the trouble when The Z presents a pair of spooky movies back-to-back to honor the frightful holiday. First, The Addams Family (1991) follows Gomez (Raul Julia), Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and their ghoulish household as they fall prey to a scam involving long-lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd). Next is Coraline (2009), a visually stunning stop-motion animated feature from the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning) is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door that leads her into a world that’s just like her own…but better! ZEITERION.ORG // 508-994-2900

The drummers of Japan

SUNDAY, 4PM

JANUARY 21 Named for ‘the land of Yamato,” the birthplace of Japanese culture, the Yamato Drummers travel all over the word with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums, putting their very souls into the unusual instruments. It is something that is invisible and intangible, but whose existence is certainly felt. APRIL 12 A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. It follows the men of Alpha Company and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at age 43. With original cello music as underscoring, the audience lays witness to the complex issues of war and the universal struggle of the soldier. Sit on stage during the solo performance from Literature to Life® that presents a blurred line between truth and reality, fact and fiction for an unforgettable and thought-provoking journey. MAY 31 Culture*Park Theatre was originally commissioned by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies to adapt and present “Through a Portagee Gate, a play.” This full-length play dramatizes the immigrant experience framed by a dynamic father/son relationship. The play depicts the story of Jose Felix, who came to America from Portugal in 1915 in pursuit of the American Dream, with nothing but the coat on his back. His son Carlos, the second protagonist and storyteller of the play, is a teacher in California under the name Charlie, denying his roots and yearning for his own “American” identity. There, in his elementary school classroom, a Portuguese-speaking custodian becomes an ironic confidant. This epic story, adapted from the renowned memoir of the same title by Charles Reis Felix, is alive with humor, wit and sincerity drawn from the human experience and heritage that is undeniably part of the Southcoast’s fabric.
