Five hundred and sixty-five students from 34 Arizona schools participated in the event. The students representing NVCA were Lallana Freneaux, David Thomas, Joshua Wollman, Rowan Baum, and Brody Flowers. The tournament included 60 students in the kindergarten section (students were grouped by general grade range). The players on the teams were paired with kindergartners from other schools. When an individual student won a game, it counted as a point for his or her team’s overall score, with the goal to get as many points as possible for the team.

Walking in Spirit and Hope A local nonprofit organization celebrates its 10-year anniversary. By Irma Poznecki

Team WISH (Walking in Spirit and Hope) is celebrating its 10th anniversary. This nonprofit began in 2004 by founders Linda Kacmarsky, Pat Drapac, and Louise Tobias. “Our 10-year anniversary is a bittersweet celebration because one of our inspirational originating founders, Linda Kacmarsky, sadly lost her battle with cancer two years ago,” says co-captain Talley Sieglen. “However, her legacy will live on through the continued efforts of our team—the team she started.”

Expanding the Scope of Success The primary mission has been to raise funds for breast cancer research and educational programs. The newly elected board of directors has restructured the Team WISH bylaws and mission statement to include opportunities to support fund-raising efforts for other types of cancers and community involvement. Their new mission also includes a membership drive and a new walking club. This board has high hopes of regaining the momentum of their overall presence in Anthem and the surrounding communities. Extending their volunteering activities to aid other community organizations is their way of expressing gratitude to a community that has strongly supported them over the years. Board president Ashley Thomason sums it up like this: “Through the years, we’ve had more and more team members share stories about personal and family struggles with various cancers. Broadening the

20 || 85086MAGAZINE.com || JUNE 2014

scope of our efforts was simply the logical progression for us. And we want to be able to give back to our local communities and help raise awareness for all types of cancer.”

Marching On with Dedication Proving their commitment to the new mission, Team WISH had over 22 team members fund-raising and supporting the American Cancer Society’s signature event, Relay for Life of Anthem, back in April. “The Anthem-area community has been very supportive of Team WISH for so long, it’s time we give back by participating in events that help fund other cancer programs and help our neighbors in times of need,” says co-captain Kira Westin. With their membership drive in its infancy, Team WISH is already grow-

ing. “We have members in five different states now—it is very exciting to see us expanding!” says San Diego co-captain Dacia Kyle. The SGK 3-Day 60-mile walk may no longer be in Arizona, but that won’t stop Team WISH from having members walk in both the Philadelphia and San Diego events. There are over 26 walkers registered for these out-of-state events. They will continue to raise funds and awareness for all things associated with breast cancer. “It’s great having members in other states, but our strongest presence remains here within our local community,” says board director Linda Reidinger.

A Common Link Fosters Fellowship A strong and friendly team vibe is obvious among both new and seasoned walkers when they get together to train,

Comrades having fun while doing something meaningful and powerful in the fight against cancer.

hen Anthem resident and local real estate agent Eric Kilstrom thought he was going to lose his son to a possibly fatal growth, he prayed to God to spare his child and promised that, in exchange, he would do anything to help others going through the awful pain and helplessness he was experiencing. “I can’t remember feeling any worse than that,” Eric says. Luckily, the growth turned out to be a benign cyst, which was removed in an operation that left his son, Griffin, with a point of discussion among his friends— no belly button! A couple of years later, Eric made good on his promise to God after his wife, Sara, attended a Bunco benefit for a young Anthem boy suffering from can-

cer. “You have to do something for him,” Sara told her husband. Never one to ignore a request from his wife, Eric got to work. As the founder of the Business Network of Anthem, a confederation of Anthem businesses, Eric rounded up several of his business network contacts, and they hit the ground running with their new charitable organization, We Care in Anthem, to help Joshua. “Hundreds of families and thousands of dollars later, here we are with We Care in Anthem, Anthem Giving Circle, NAAAP, We Care Kids, Anthem Cares through Service (ACTS), and HOPE, all helping families struggling with one thing or another,” Eric says. To learn more about We Care in Anthem, visit wecareatanthem.org.

Q: What’s next? A: Handing the reins of We Care over to someone that has passion helping people. There is a point in the charity business that you become old and bitter.

Professional Profiles ASK THE ATTORNEY

Kerrie Droban

Q: Do I really need an attorney to handle my divorce? We agree on everything. A: Usually, yes. If one spouse hires an attorney, you will be at an extreme disadvantage if you decide to represent yourself. You will be held to the same standard as a lawyer and expected to litigate the case and be as knowledgeable about the law. Even if you and your spouse agree to the equitable division of assets, legal decision-making authority and parenting time, it’s sound to hire a lawyer to draft up your agreements and ensure that your mutual contract is not only enforceable but fair.

Manscaping

Beauty expert Jacqueline Starr-Hubert goes in search of the perfect shave. Guys, this one’s for you. As you make the effort to stay competitive and look your best, you may also prefer to keep it simple and perfect the routine you already have. So, let’s explore the most basic of regimes—shaving. It’s an underrated thing, the regimen, and in the interest of making every moment of this crucial ritual count, we offer a guide to the best way we know how to conduct it. 1. Allow a few minutes for your face to deflate. Allow the first-thing-in-the-morning puffiness to reduce itself before you shave. Ten minutes should do the trick. Doing so dramatically reduces the risk of nicking. A smoother surface allows for better results. 2. Always start with cool water. To prepare skin before shaving, cleanse skin thoroughly with a face wash and warm water—avoid using hot water as this can overdry skin, leading to irritation. 3. Take a day off from weekly shaving (sorry, ladies!). Try not to shave at least once a week— it really helps skin if you give it a rest, and I find that when you next shave, you tend to get a super-close and smoother finish. 4. Make “slow and short strokes” your mantra. The most common mistake men make shaving is the speed at which they stroke. Men who suffer with razor burn tend to be the ones who shave at 100 mph. This creates friction, which leads to irritation. Take your time, and use slow, short strokes.

6. Press, don’t push! Men tend to think that if they press harder, they’ll get a closer shave, but that’s not so. Modern razors are designed to work with relatively little pressure, so if you want to reduce irritation, don’t push. Instead, apply just enough pressure to keep the blade in contact with the skin, and let the blade do all the work for you. 7. Switch to oils if you’re sensitive. Certain skin types can be greatly affected by the alkaline PH level in some shaving products. If your skin is easily irritated, it may be worth checking the shaving medium you use and try something new. To minimize problems, try shaving oil, which I find much kinder for sensitive skin. 8. Be aware of your blades. Never use a blunt blade as it is distressing to the skin, causes redness and irritation, and won’t shave skin evenly. (Ladies, use your own…we’ve all done it!) 9. Skip the aftershave. Aftershaves all typically contain a high level of alcohol, which tends to dry out your skin, increase the risk of irritation after your shave, and deplete the skin’s natural defensive barrier, accelerating the skin aging process. Instead, apply an aftershave balm or moisturizer.

5. Apply gel or cream in circular motions. When applying shaving gel or cream, 10. Ingrown hairs! apply it with your fingertips, using a Ingrown hairs aren’t serious, but they circular motion.
