It’s no secret that there’s beauty in the Pocono Mountains. The region’s landscape and location make it easy to enjoy in any season. Whether you’re just dropping by or settling in for a stay, the itineraries below can help you decide what to do and see. Hit the trails. On foot, by bike, on ATV or horseback, you can explore miles of trails throughout the region. If you’re near Honesdale, head to Prompton State Park for some fun and fresh air or stroll through the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary. Try the trails at the Pocono Environmental Education Center or seek out roaring waterfalls along Route 209. A few turns off this road will take you to the “Niagara of Pennsylvania,” Bushkill Falls. You can hike or bike beside the Delaware River on the McDade Recreational Trail or explore Promised Land State Park. There are approximately 50 miles of hiking trails throughout Promised Land State Park and the surrounding Delaware State Forest. If you’d like to try horseback riding for the day, you can visit one of the Pocono Mountains’ many stables. Malibu Dude Ranch in Milford offers guided rides on over 800 acres of trails. ATV adventures are also offered there. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head into Milford for enticing dining options. Destinations range from family restaurants to fine-dining establishments. Spend a day on the water. Canoe, kayak or raft down the Delaware and Lackawaxen Rivers, or take to the lakes for fast-paced fun on calmer water. Lake Wallenpaupack boasts 52 miles of shoreline in the Pocono Mountains. The “Big Lake” is ideal for boating, jet skiing, stand-up paddleboarding, waterskiing and even parasailing. Numerous outfitters ensure there’s plenty of equipment available. All you need is your sense of adventure!

PoconoMountains.com

Pick up the pace. Get your heart pumping during adrenaline-fueled adventures! Challenge your friends to a game of paintball above the banks of the Delaware River, and then fly through the air on 3,000’ dual racing zip lines! Kittatinny Canoes offers these and other adventures at bases along the Delaware River. Take a peek into the past. Explore the region’s many museums and galleries. In Honesdale, you’ll find the Wayne County Historical Society and Museum, home of the Stourbridge Lion Replica. Nearby, the Dorflinger Glass Museum presents elegant collections of cut and etched glass. In Pike County, Grey Towers National Historic Site stands out as a must-visit, and the Columns Museum, home of the famous “Lincoln Flag,” is just minutes away. The riverside town of Lackawaxen is where author Zane Grey once lived and wrote. You can visit his home, now the Zane Grey Museum, in the warmer months.

[ Stay More Than a Day ] Here’s a look at some multi-day itineraries to help you get going.

[ For Couples ]

After a full day of fun on the lake, you won’t have to go far to find great food. Enjoy American eats with waterfront views, or head into Hawley for farm-to-table fare. Once you’ve dined, grab a scoop at Gresham’s and catch the sunset over the lake—a sweet way to end a day in the Pocono Mountains.

With all of this history, it’s no surprise that antiquing is among the most popular pastimes. You never know what you’ll find! Dealers are peppered throughout the region, from Milford to Honesdale and beyond.

Play in the snow. Fresh fallen snow turns the Pocono Mountains into a winter wonderland. There’s downhill skiing, riding and tubing at Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain, and cross-country skiing on the wooded trails. Eagle watching reaches its peak along the icy shores of the region’s rivers, and snowshoeing and snowmobiling take adventurers off the beaten path. For trip planning assistance and additional information, visit PoconoMountains.com.

More of an indoor couple? Spend a day shopping in the charming towns and then feast on local foods at a farm-to-table restaurant. On day two of your trip, look into the area’s history. Visit a museum, check out some antique shops, or head into Honesdale for a scenic train ride. The Stourbridge Line runs seasonal excursions to neighboring areas. Be sure to stop by the Irving Cliff Brewery before you leave town. You’ll get a taste of local beers and history there. The Cooperage in Honesdale, the Milford Theatre in Milford, and the Ritz Company Playhouse in Hawley are other great places to go on a date.

The Pocono Mountains is a playground for families, promising indoor and outdoor adventures in every season. Woodloch Pines Resort was named TripAdvisor.com’s Best Large Hotel for Families in America in 2015. The all-inclusive property has been described as a “cruise on land,” with countless activities and amenities in one scenic location. You can go the allinclusive route or set out to see the sights on your own.

[ For Families ]

Discover great designs. This area is home to architectural gems. Grey Towers and the Hawley Silk Mill are among the largest and most notable, but beauty can be found in all corners of the region, from the churches in Honesdale to the famous Roebling Bridge. Located in Lackawaxen, the Roebling Aqueduct Bridge is the oldest existing wire suspension bridge in the U.S. It was designed by and built under the supervision of John A. Roebling, who would go on to design the Brooklyn Bridge.

It all starts with the accommodations, and in the Pocono Mountains, you can have your pick. Turn up the heat at Cove Haven Resort, a couples-only property on Lake Wallenpaupack, or embrace the charm of a country inn or B&B. Once you’ve secured your place to stay, look for activities you can enjoy together. Pack a picnic lunch and take a boat out on one of the region’s many lakes. If you’d like to try fishing, you can borrow equipment from the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center.

In warmer weather, the region’s lakes and rivers provide hours of entertainment. In winter, snowsports offer fun for all. Camping is very popular in this area, where you can get away from it all, yet stay close to the main attractions. Set up camp beside Lake Wallenpaupack, outside Honesdale, or along the Delaware for easy access to family-friendly activities. Hike together on wooded trails, or embark on a horseback riding adventure. If you’re visiting in autumn, the foliage views are spectacular. Take a scenic drive together on the acclaimed Route 6 or Route 507. These roads will take you past scenic vistas and some of the area’s top family attractions. Costa’s Family Fun Park is a great place to play away a warm day. Activities include go-karts, miniature golf, waterslides and a children’s play area. The region’s museums are a safe bet in any weather, and some offer special spaces just for kids. If your visit coincides with a fair or festival, you’ll want to check it out. You’ll get a feel for the community and enjoy some family-friendly entertainment along the way. Annual events include music, art and film festivals, county fairs and seasonal celebrations.

Who doesn’t love a wholesome meal? Here in the Pocono Mountains we’ve harnessed delectable, home-grown nourishment and farm-to-table freshness for any time of the day. We all care about our health, and restaurants are starting to cater to that very notion. While our longevity is important, knowing where your food is from is, arguably, just as vital. With the accessibility of local and organic ingredients, farm-to-table practices are becoming increasingly available. Here are a few Pocono Mountains restaurants that are serving up healthier, sustainable foods.

Breakfast As the most important meal of the day, your favorite breakfast dishes are available, but with a new-age twist. The French Manor Inn and Spa grow herbs on-site in the chef’s garden, which are used in their dishes. Scents of oregano, sage, and thyme are immediately recognized when a breeze blows over the garden. An onproperty bakery makes pastries and breads enjoyed during meals. You must try their homemade coffee cake; it is delicious! The French Manor also incorporates local cheeses and vegetables into their recipes. The cheese is sourced from Calkins Creamery in Honesdale, PA while the asparagus is obtained from Springbrook in Greentown, PA. 14

Cocoon Coffeehouse & Catering Company specializes in sandwiches, paninis and farm fresh salads. Cocoon makes an on-site grain salad and pesto while bread and croissants are baked daily across the property at the Mill Market. Featured Dish: The Baked Omelet Roulette features Canadian bacon, white cheddar cheese, and asparagus with a hollandaise sauce. TREE Restaurant and Bar cultivates vegetables and herbs on-location in the Blackmore Farm-to-Table Garden. Herbs from the garden are also used for a selection of farm-to-massage table spa treatments. Dinners in the garden can be reserved on Thursday evenings for up to 16 of your closest friends. TREE sources sustainable seafood, hormone-free beef, free-range poultry, and organic produce from local businesses like The Lackawaxen Farm Company and Hardler Farm in Honesdale, PA. Select ingredients even promote brain health and restful sleep.

Coffee beans are purchased from Electric City Coffee in Scranton, PA while cheese and tomatoes are obtained from Leraysville Market in Leraysville, PA.

Featured Dish: The Turkey Bacon Ranchero combines sweet peppers, cheddar cheese, buttermilk herb aioli, and pico de gallo on sundried tomato bread.

Dinner

Lunch Now that our mouths are watering, let’s continue our journey right into lunchtime!

The Settlers Inn at Bingham Park grows herbs and edible flowers, such as pansies and daisies, that are used throughout their recipes. The Settlers Inn confides in companies with impeccable reputations for sustainability and designs their menus seasonally around local farmers. Produce is locally sourced through farms, including The Lackawaxen Farm Company in Honesdale, PA and Lato Sud Farm in Beach Lake, PA. Beef is accessed through a co-op in Lancaster, PA.

We’re still hungry, and bet you are too. The Delmonico Room at Hotel Fauchere grows vegetables in a large, organic garden and greenhouse at Foster Hill Farm in Milford, PA. Asparagus and rhubarb are of particular interest this growing season, and are integrated into various dishes.

Featured Dish: Butchie’s Farm Sausage Omelet incorporates roasted red peppers, avocado, and cheddar cheese ingredients are locally sourced and gluten-free.

Featured Dish: The Mothers Milk Veal features grilled asparagus, emmer porridge, butter milk foam, and miners lettuce.

Other ingredients come from local farmers, such as Vine Hill Farm and Kittatinny Mountain Farms, NJ. The Delmonico Room at Hotel Fauchere also frequents the local farmers’ market in downtown Milford, PA. They also work with local foragers who meet their specifications.

Featured Dish: The Jail Island Salmon combines black forbidden rice, apricot sauce, and a rhubarb cucumber salsa. With the versatility of farm-to-table practices displayed, there is no confusion as to why it is so popular. In sourcing local and organic ingredients, these restaurants have shown their care and dedication to health and community without compromising taste. PoconoMountains.com

[ Visit These Historical Societies] The Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS)

Located on Main Street in Honesdale. The red brick building houses an extensive research library, gift shop and main museum, which is home to a plethora of items such as clothing, an impressive glass collection dating as far back as the 1800s, flags, documents and most famously, the Stourbridge Lion Replica, which was the first steam locomotive to run in America.

Stourbridge Lion Replica, Wayne County Historical Society

Paying homage to this is the Stourbridge Line, a train directly behind the historical society, which runs seasonal excursions from Honesdale to the neighboring town of Hawley and further along the Lackawaxen River. The main museum building was built in 1860 and was originally the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company office in Honesdal Educating the public about the history of the area is very important to society officials and they regularly speak during events, meetings and other occasions. Check out the Bethel School in Berlin Township and the Lock 31 D&H Canal Park on Delaware and Hudson Canal. The one-room country schoolhouse was constructed before 1872 and is open to the public in the summer and fall. See what it was like attending school during a time when one teacher directed the students and there was no electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. The WCHS formed the Towpath to Trail Committee in 1997 with the purpose of establishing the first public greenway in the state on a section of the former D&H Canal. Since then, the WCHS acquired a mile of canal/ towpath including Lock 31, the Lock 31 House (circa 1820s) and adjoining 16 acres, all known as the Canal Park. Future plans include the restoration of the Lock 31 House for use as a living canal history museum and extending the existing trail.

The Pike County Historical Society

Located at the Columns Museum, situated on Broad Street in Milford. It houses artifacts and archives and its claim to fame is the blood stained Lincoln flag, which is on display in a tall glass case. There is also the Hiawatha 1850s stage coach, posters, vintage clothing, books and art, and background on notable figures such as Gifford Pinchot and his family, and Chief Thundercloud.

The Pinchot family left a legacy of forestry, preservation and conservation, which can also be found at Grey Towers National Historic Site in Milford. This was the family’s ancestral home and the stone mansion is open for tours in the summer and fall as well as ongoing events, programs and workshops throughout the year. Chief Thundercloud lived in Dingmans Ferry and was the famous American Indian believed to be the model for the nickel as well as the last five dollar gold piece minted in the United States.

[ 150 Lakes, 170 Miles of River & the most Streams in PA ]

I

t’s been said that an angler can visit the Pocono Mountains for an entire month and never fish the same water twice.

The region boasts 150 lakes, 170 miles of rivers, and the largest number of high-quality and exceptional valued streams in the commonwealth.

About Trout

• Brown, rainbow and brook trout are stocked in Pocono waters • Colorful brown and brook trout are native to many of the region’s rated streams • The average size of a stocked trout is 9-11” • Native trout are slightly smaller at 6-8” • In PA, trout must be at least 7” long to keep • The state record for brown trout is 32.25” (19 lb., 10 oz.) • The inland daily limit on trout is five fish (combined species) in season

Stocking Up

• The Pocono Mountains encompasses 122 miles of stocked river and 11,285 acres of stocked lakes

Gearing Up

• A valid PA fishing license (with trout/salmon permit if fishing for trout) is required for anglers 16 and older • Numerous options, including one, three and seven-day tourist permits, are available for visitors • You can purchase a PA fishing license online or at a sporting goods store • Licenses must be displayed on an outer garment • Licenses are not required on PA “Fish for Free” Days. 2018 dates are May 27 and July 4 • Fishing equipment is available for rent through the Lake Wallenpaupack Visitors Center’s Fishing Tackle Loaner Program • Fishing licenses are not required at pay lakes in the Pocono Mountains

Trout Fishing Tips from a Pocono Pro

Mike Possinger, Manager of Manor Sports at Pocono Manor • Go easy on the approach, especially if it’s a sunny day. Fish can see your shadow! • If fishing in a low stream, look for structures in the water. Downed trees and pools around rocks make good hiding spots for trout. • In medium running streams, seek out rainbow and brown trout in ripples. They’ll be there waiting for food to float by. • Try fly fishing in the evening hours. Bugs begin to hatch an hour or two before dark. • Early in the season, mealworms, earthworms and salmon eggs are your best bets for bait. • Bring along extra hooks and sinkers, and a set of nail clippers to tackle line tangles. • Fishing in a tight space? Opt for a rod with a spincasting reel. Save your fly rod for wider waters. • Be patient! You’ll reel one in eventually. Take your time and enjoy the experience of trout fishing in the Pocono Mountains.

he Pocono Mountains are home to beautiful, cascading waterfalls. Visitors and locals alike enjoy taking in the awe-inspiring sights as they walk to the falls. Bask in the presence of these gorgeous gems where water meets rock and trees. Take in the woodsy scent of your surroundings and feel the refreshing mist as the waterfall experience permeates your being. The falls are amazing to see and take on a unique, alluring quality. For many people, waterfall viewing is an essential part of their itinerary when exploring the scenic natural wonders of the area. Most of the falls are easily accessible and do not require a lot of hiking to see them. It’s important to do some research before heading to the falls. For example, Dingmans Falls features a wheelchair accessible boardwalk while others could be more challenging with steep, rocky climbs.

[ Our Scenic Waterfalls ] Raymondskill Falls This is the tallest waterfall in the state and only four feet shorter than Niagara. For this reason, Raymondskill is considered a popular local tourist attraction. Raymondskill features two viewing platforms. Dingmans Falls This is the second highest falls in the state with a plunge of 130 feet. People can walk along a boardwalk platform. Along the way, a thinner waterfall called Silverthread Falls is visible. George W. Childs Park: Factory Falls, Fulmer Falls, Deer Leap Falls Located off of Silver Lake Road, this recreation site recently re-opened to the public after several years of renovations. It is a former state park and features three waterfalls along Dingmans Creek. It is a few miles upstream from Dingmans Falls. Childs Park offers picnic tables, so pack a lunch and spend an afternoon strolling through the park. Shohola Falls Heading east on Route 6 from Hawley, shortly after the junction of Route 434 and Well Road, is the turnoff for the falls. Tanners Falls Just a few miles north of Honesdale in State Game Lands #159 is this stunning waterfall, which is about 20 feet tall with two tiers. Several details make this a particularly unique spot, such as the old bridge above the falls that crosses over Dyberry Creek and a variety of stone ruins from the 1830s when the falls were known as Dyberry Falls and the area was home to several mills. The bridge was constructed in 1885 and uses a combination of wood, stone and metal. It’s no longer open to traffic, but people are allowed to stroll along its length to view the falls. < Silverthread Falls, Pike County. 58
