Plugged In and Amping Up
I
n January, the website techie.com selected Burlington as one of the country’s top 10 “most promising tech hubs to watch.” It acknowledged the area’s vibrant and growing tech scene and its potential to expand. See for yourself at the eighth Vermont Tech Jam. This weekend, dozens of tech companies from all over Vermont — from the state’s largest employers to its newest startups — stake out tables and talk with the public at Burlington’s Memorial Auditorium. It’s the same venue the farmer market uses in the winter, transformed into a hub of high-tech energy. Instead of selling root veggies and baked goods, these enterprises are recruiting employees. Lots of them: Nearly 50 Tech Jam exhibitors are hiring. They’ll also be talking about their products, and, in some cases, demonstrating them. The companies on display make everything from the audio plug-ins used by recording artist Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails to undersea submersibles that are mapping the ocean floor with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Exhibitors will bring their Vermont-made apps and video games and invite visitors to “walk” through a building that hasn’t yet been built using an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Local colleges and job training programs will be promoting courses that can help Vermonters plug in to this burgeoning scene. Meanwhile, groups of middleand high-school students are holding their own mini-expo on the Vermont Agency of Education’s Student STEM Stage at the front of the auditorium. Visitors can take a break from wandering the exhibitor booths to see students display science, technology, engineering and math projects. Hopefully, the students will also stop to talk with some of the employers who’ll be ready to hire them in a few years. But the Jam isn’t just about jobs. A series of presentations and a film screening take place in Memorial’s adjoining 242 Main presentation space. Memorial is also home to Generator, Burlington’s community maker space, which is a sponsor of this year’s Tech Jam. Generator’s creative members are showing their art and tech projects all weekend long and explaining how to use their laser cutter and 3-D printer. Don’t know what a “maker” is? Stop in for a tour. There’s a lot to see and do over the course of the two days — hence, this handy guide. Promising, indeed.

The Chinese government warns that internet addiction is the greatest threat facing its youth. Web Junkie, a new documentary film that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, presents an intimate portrait of a Beijing rehab center where Chinese teens are taken to unplug. The Vermont International Film Festival presents this free screening at the Vermont Tech Jam. It’s followed by a panel discussion with gamers and mental health professionals from Champlain College.

The Vermont Technology Alliance received numerous nominations for this year’s third annual Vermont Tech Jam Innovator and Ambassador Awards, aka the Jammies, sponsored by Merchants Bank. The judges — IBM Fellow John Cohn, Commerce Secretary Pat Moulton, Google Community Affairs Director Matt Dunne and Seven Days Publisher/ Coeditor Paula Routly — have narrowed the field to three finalists in each category. The winners will be announced at the Tech Jam exhibitor reception — sponsored by Dinse, Knapp & McAndrew — on Friday, October 24, at Generator. Each winner will receive a handcrafted robot statuette designed by Burlington sculptor John Brickels.

INNOVATION AWARD FINALISTS Greensea Systems, Richmond
Stone Environmental, Montpelier
Vermont may seem an unlikely location to design software that guides underwater vehicles, but Ben Kinnaman has built a thriving business in landlocked Richmond. Over the last six years, Greensea Systems has installed systems for more than 350 remotely operated vehicles. Its latest products — Balefire, a control and navigation system, and Endal, a sonar plugin — have been recognized for delivering improved efficiency and performance in ROVs. The Balefire and Endal products are tested in Lake Champlain, and Greensea regularly works with the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and Middlebury College.
Tropical Storm Irene demonstrated in no uncertain terms where Vermont is vulnerable to flooding. What if there were a tool that could predict such devastation before it occurred? Stone Environmental has developed an app to help communities worldwide do just that. The company’s Stormwater Resilience product lets businesses and governments interpret and understand large amounts of data by creating 3-D visualizations, maps and web applications to solve problems associated with climate change and environmental stewardship. By anticipating the impacts of significant rainfall, communities can prioritize investments to prevent damage to roads, homes and buildings. Stone used data from Vermont’s own city of Barre to develop the app, which was a finalist in the UN Climate Resilience App Challenge.
AMBASSADOR AWARD FINALISTS IBM, Essex Junction IBM’s Vermont facility has been generating lots of headlines recently, but few of them have been about the company’s groundbreaking technological advances. If you own a cellphone, chances are it contains at least one chip manufactured by IBM in Vermont. The IBM Microelectronics facility develops and manufactures semiconductor chips used in a range of mobile and consumer products. IBM Vermont engineers developed and introduced its nextgeneration technologies for building chips for radio frequency front-end modules for use in smartphones and tablets. They’re 30 percent smaller and provide 30 percent better performance, resulting in improved cellphone connections, fewer dropped calls and longer battery life. More than 10 billion Vermontmade silicon chips based on its radio-frequency technologies have been shipped worldwide.
Girl Develop It, Burlington Girl Develop It is a nonprofit organization that provides affordable and accessible programs to women who want to learn web and software development through mentorship and hands-on instruction. The Burlington chapter of this national organization, founded in 2013 by Maureen McElaney, has 475 members and seeks to strengthen the local tech community through diversification. GDI Burlington has hosted more than 36 meet-ups and technical workshops in various programming languages, awarded 16 class scholarships, and taught 233 students software development skills to help further their careers in the local tech industry.
Bradley Holt and Jason Pelletier of Found Line, Burlington As the principals of Found Line, Holt and Pelletier have provided web and mobile development services for nonprofit organizations, from Vermont Public Radio to Common Good Vermont. The two have been leaders in building the local tech community through their work organizing Burlington’s PHP users group, Vermont Code Camp, BTV Gig, National Day of Civic Hacking and Code for BTV. They have been involved in the development of a Civic Cloud for Burlington and helped secure a $35,000 Knight Foundation grant for the program. In 2013, Holt and Pelletier were selected as Code for America brigade captains for their role in organizing Code for BTV. Holt is chair of the board at Vermont Community Access Media and a member of the mayor’s BTV Ignite Advisory Committee.
University of Vermont Department of Computer Science, Burlington The UVM Department of Computer Science has grown dramatically over the past four years. Enrollment during that time has increased from 90 to 250 students, 44 percent of whom hail from Vermont. Coming soon: a $650,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to award 16 four-year scholarships, with the goal of broadening the representation of women and underrepresented minorities. UVM computer science students are required to do community service, and faculty are involved in K-12 education, both through an online robotics program, and by teaching computer science concepts in Vermont schools. Research projects include a $3 million NSF-funded project focused on Smart Grid technology in Vermont.

Last year, I was living in Pleasanton, California, and was thinking about moving to Vermont. I was looking online for jobs and saw a posting for the Tech Jam. Since I was attempting to move from so far away, I figured it would be best if I could meet in-person with potential employers in Vermont instead of being an anonymous résumé submitted from across the country. In the days leading up to the Tech Jam, I began researching companies on sites like Glassdoor and LinkedIn. I made a list of ones that seemed well regarded and seemed to be pursuing technologies and ideas I was interested in. At the event, I spoke to pretty much everyone, but waited to get comfortable with “selling myself” before speaking with representatives from companies I was highly interested in.
