We have a wonderful range of activities that will inspire and move you. The MAG is pleased to announce that, starting in January, visitors to our website will be able to see some of our collection online. We will be adding new records to the collections page each month so please check it out: www.reddeermuseum.com .

Don’t miss our Family Day MAGapalooza! on Monday, February 16. There will be fun activities for families of all ages. Walking With Our Sisters June 1 to 21, 2015

Community Volunteers Walking With Our Sisters is a memorial installation that pays tribute to the lives of the missing and murdered Indigenous women from across this nation. Over 1800 pairs of vamps, or moccasin tops, have been created and donated by artists from around the world to draw attention to this otherwise largely overlooked national crisis. We are looking for people to give their time and energy to see this project become what Central Alberta needs it to be. There is no shortage of ways to be involved. From organizing committee members, to youth 2

Welcome! engagement, to fundraising; the list is long and the call for assistance is loud. Walking With Our Sisters will forever change the way the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery positions itself in our community. We’re so excited and privileged to be able to do this work. If you have any questions, or would like to learn more about this or any upcoming project, please call us at 403-309-8405 or email wwosreddeer@gmail.com Mother Earth Essentials, based out of Edmonton, Alberta, has created a custom, loose berry blend of tea for the Walking With Our Sisters project.

When complete, the reorganized collections will help our community and visiting researchers have better access to the wealth of knowledge our objects hold about the vibrant history of Red Deer and Central Alberta.

Your help is needed. If you would like to volunteer with the project, meet new people who share an interest in history, and explore the behind-the-scenes world of the MAG, Please contact the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery at 403-309-8405 or email museum@reddeer.ca.

Ella Parsons Evening Gown

Evening Coat

Acc: 1984.156.11a-c Gift of the Estate of Annie Parsons

Marcia Ella Bull married Dr. Richard Parsons in 1905. The couple had four children: MacGregor, William, Ella and Margo. During the Spanish Influenza epidemic, she worried about her husband’s health as he dealt with patients every day. Sadly, it was Ella herself who died of the disease in 1918.

Nun’s Habit Acc: 2011.10.la-k Gift of Larry Dubitz

This style of habit (clothing) was worn by nuns of the congregation of the Daughters of Wisdom from its inception until 1962. Three nuns from France and two from Quebec arrived in October 1908. Under the leadership of Mother Marie Agathe, they oversaw the completion of St. Joseph’s convent and boarding school.

Acc: 1977-67-42 Gift of the Estate of Mr. Herbert Spenceley

This metallic evening coat was worn by Elizabeth Fletcher, who later became Mrs. Spenceley. The pointed sleeve edges and the asymmetrical closure of this evening jacket point to the influence of 1920s Art Deco design. Elizabeth was active in her community. She played piano at dances in the school and was a charter member of the Balmoral Women’s Institute, established in 1926.

Knitted Skating Outfit Acc: 2000.44.2a-j Gift of Doris Ballantine

This knitted skating outfit was made by Doris’ mother, Mrs. Anna Vollmer Ballantine, in the 1940s. The outfit shows the influence of Olympic skating champion, Sonja Henie. The MAG has the complete costume, as well as the knitting pattern used. Monarch Knitting Co. Ltd. Patter 811, page 22, Book 78. 5
