Fall Shopping Guide 2015

From the Editor Welcome to September and what has the potential to be a most memorable and enjoyable season. And while our clothing choices are merely the foundation that allows us to present to the world who we are and help inform others of how we care for ourselves and therefore expect to be treated, how we go about our days makes the most powerful difference when it comes to the success and happiness we encounter.

By sharing with you this season’s shopping guide, I am merely proffering a touch of my experience to add the sparkle that is begging to be shone to the world.

Recently, I was reading an excerpt from Mindy Kaling’s new book set to be released this month Why Not Me?, and she responds to a fan’s question about how she achieved her confidence.

directive? “Show” your expertise. That is precisely what I’m encouraging you to do as you fine-tune your capsule wardrobe.

In a detailed explanation that is both serious and brilliantly humorous, as Kaling has mastered, the simple answer was, “I worked hard, very, very hard.” Now you may be wondering, what does she mean? To briefly summarize, it isn’t until we work our tails off and become an expert in our field or in a particular specialty that we can truly exude authentic confidence. And when we do finally get to this point, we have the ability to stand confidently in what we’ve done and what we can do without doubting ourselves. That is the confidence that many observe and adore in Kaling and her advice is sound. Confidence isn’t just something you can buy. It truly is something you must earn. Yes, we can fake it and will have to most likely at some point along the way, but the feeling of true confidence is priceless, unless we consider our time, sweat and effort a currency. You may be wondering, hasn’t Shannon mentioned repeatedly that the clothes we wear can quickly give us confidence? You are correct, but simply wearing clothing that looks good, if it’s not backed up with substance does not equate to sincere confidence. Sure, we can exude confidence that we look good, but if we open our mouths and cannot project the knowledge we need to know for our job or the integrity that people expect from us, slowly, no matter how nice the ensemble, our faux confidence is revealed. However, I know with absolute certainty based on the emails I receive from readers that you are amazingly talented, hard-working and accomplished individuals.

In the words of Mindy Kaling, “Work hard, know your

shit, show your shit, and then feel entitled. Listen to no one except the two smartest and kindest adults you know, and that doesn't always mean your parents. If you do that, you will be fine.” Did you notice the third

You are already doing the hard work, gaining the knowledge, now dress for the role that is yours. Own it. The results, I assure you, will astound you. And with that, unofficially fall begins. When the US Tennis Open swings the first racket, schools open their doors to a new year and the temperatures drop to the ideal temperatures, I begin to get a little giddy. What a beautiful season to enjoy. Wishing you the best fall yet.
