Sarah lived a life of servitude that was evidenced by her commitment to making valuable and meaningful contributions to society by working with people and organizations. Sarah devoted her entire life to working with city officials in Denver to bring people together to celebrate community pride. For two decades, from the 1970s through the 1990s, Sarah helped organize the Denver Juneteenth Celebration in Five Points. More than 100, 000 people attended the annual three day celebration and Sarah was the first woman to serve as President of the Five Points Business Association.

Denver joins national protests demanding justice and the arrest of George Zimmerman

“Arrest Zimmerman! Arrest Zimmerman! What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!” was the national outcry, as hundreds of thousands took to the streets across America. As a result of public pressure, a special prosecutor was appointed, and Zimmerman was arrested, and charged with second-degree murder. “I’m still not happy. It should have been first-degree murder,” said Terrance Roberts, director of the Prodigal Son Initiative. “Trayvon was profiled because he was black. His civil rights were violated.” As the case continues to unfold, the ghost of Rodney King and OJ Simpson reemerge, and the nation is again forced to confront its most sensitive wound–race.

Urban Spectrum Celebrates 25 Years

Rosalind “Bee” Harris knows how to throw a party! She packed the Renaissance Hotel ballroom with Denver’s local African-American political, social and business leaders to celebrate the 25th anniversary and publishing of her magazine the Urban Spectrum. She also honored “25 Timeless Legends”, women of Denver. The honorees were awarded statures made by the timeless legend and internationally renown, Ed Dwight.

The community experienced more trauma, as Summer kicks off with a double murder near the corner of Bruce Randolph and York Street. The area is no stranger to shooting, and violence. Police have arrested two young men in connection with the murders. Two other men were injured. The investigation continues, and a motive for the senseless killings is unknown.

CORNERSTONES EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY AT BLAIR CALDWELL LIBRARY brother jeff ’s commitment to the Five Points community has been demonstrated consistently in numerous ways. Preserving the legacy of those whose shoulders we stand on is reflected in many of his endeavors. Perhaps, none of which speak as profoundly as the Cornerstone of Five Points Photograph Exhibit. The photographs in this collection are revealing of one man’s respect for his elders and their continued love for this community.

Officer Killed, Community in Mourning

Officer Celena Hollis was killed in the line of duty on June 24 while breaking up a dispute at the City Park Jazz Festival. As many attempt to make sense of the killing, the community, including young Imani Shannon shown with Lt. Kathleen Bancroft , gathered at District 2 Police Station to offer love and support to officers grieving the loss or their fellow colleague. Rollin Oliver, 21, has been charged with first-degree murder and faces life in prison if convicted. 5 POINTS NEWS salutes Officer Hollis, may she rest in peace.
