Health & Wellbeing Have you ever been to a Sound Bath? David and Lucy of ‘Nada Sound Therapy’ have been developing innovative and inspiring methods for helping improve wellbeing across Hampshire and the South of England. Their combined skills bring together sound therapy, mindfulness, hypnotherapy and therapeutic movement. One of the most popular and accessible approaches has been through the use of sound and they have worked with a range of people from Southampton Football Club, local colleges, art galleries and private events. The practice of sound therapy is not a new concept although it has very much come into popular practice in recent years. During a ‘sound bath’ (no water required!) you are bathed in sounds produced by instruments such as singing bowls, gongs and percussion. These powerful tools can help you feel a sense of inner peace and offer the opportunity for deep self-reflection. As a trained academic teacher and with 15 years experience under his belt, David also enjoys working with young people in education. He says that “as the global challenge of stress management rises, we need to find new and accessible ways of helping people”. One of their recent creative developments has been in collaboration with Queen Elizabeth Country Park where they have developed a ‘Mindful Photography’ course. These one day events are a full sensory experience and combine sound therapy, mindfulness and taking photographs within nature. So how do you find peace in a frantic world? Coronavirus (COVID-19) Coronavirus: Wash hands for 20 seconds, urges Health Secretary in expanded public information campaign Washing hands for 20 seconds is at the heart of an expanded public awareness campaign in the fight against COVID-19, launched by the Health Secretary today. (4th March 2020) The next phase of the campaign reinforces the importance of washing your hands more often when you come in from home or work after you blow your nose, cough or sneeze, and before you eat or handle food. This should be for 20 seconds, using soap and water or hand sanitiser. You should cough or sneeze into tissues before binning them to also prevent the spread of the virus. The campaign has been brought forward in response to the current global situation. It offers clear, practical advice so the public can play their part in preventing and slowing the spread of the virus. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “The UK is a world leader in preparing for and managing disease outbreaks and I have every confidence in our nation’s ability to respond to the threat of COVID-19. “We all have a role to play in stopping this disease and that’s what this expanded campaign is all about – making sure the public knows exactly what they should be doing to keep themselves and others safe. Washing hands regularly is the single most important

The first phase of the campaign went live in February 2020, in response to rising confirmed cases of coronavirus both globally and in the UK. Yesterday, the Prime Minister published a ‘battle plan’ for tackling the disease in the UK, which sets out plans for a range of scenarios. NHS, Public Health England, and Local Authority Public Health teams up and down the country are working tirelessly to support everyone in need of advice, testing or treatment. Since January, public health teams and world-leading scientists have been working round the clock on the COVID-19 response, and the government has been working with partners across the country to provide tailored advice to the public, travelers coming into the country and those most at risk from COVID-19. Public Health England has already concluded over 13,000 tests so far, and all but 51 have been negative. The latest figures are published daily at 2pm click here to view. Expert teams are actively tracing those who have come into contact with a suspected case. Unless an individual has been contacted already or has traveled to an affected area, they should be reassured it is not necessary for them to take any further action. For more information click here

PEA AND MINT SOUP serves 6 20g of butter 2 onions, peeled and sliced 2 garlic clove, peeled and sliced 450ml of water 1 pinch of sugar 500g of petit pois 1 handful of fresh mint 4 tbsp of double cream 6 x sea bass fillet or sea bass, skinned, filleted and pin-boned, weighing 1kg if fresh from fishmongers 8

Method

For the bass - put grease proof on a tray. Lay out fillets, season and olive oil, place in oven at 180 degrees and cook for 8 to 10 mins ( guideline only For the pea and mint soup - melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the onions and garlic and cook to soften; set aside. Bring the water to the boil, add salt and a good pinch of sugar, throw in the peas and cook until just tender. Remove from the heat, add the mint leaves and immediately blitz in a liquidiser, adding the onions and garlic. Pass through a sieve, and when re-heating to serve, add the cream and adjust the seasoning.

Health & Wellbeing EVERYONE IS WELCOME AT THE RACE FOR LIFE PORTSMOUTH THIS year, everyone is invited to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life and Pretty Muddy in Portsmouth. The charity’s much-loved events are returning to the town but are no longer restricted to female participants. This means everybody can be part of the empowering Race for Life movement – and show support for the 51,400 people diagnosed with cancer every year in the South East. The Pretty Muddy events take place on Southsea Common on Saturday July 11 and Race for Life 5km & 10km on Sunday July 12 and are open to people of all ages and abilities. Georgina Horne, Cancer Research UK’s Event Manager for Hampshire, said: “This year, our Race for Life events are open to everyone. “We’re sending a heart-felt message to a nybody who’s thought about signing up in the past but for one reason or another hasn’t got round to it. This is your year – please seize the opportunity to register and become part of the Race for Life community. She added: “Our events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. Participants take part at their own pace – taking as much time as they like to complete the course. For some people, the Race for Life is literally a walk in the park. For others, it’s a jog or a run.“Although ‘Race’ features in the name, our events are not competitive. Instead, ‘the Race for Life’ is about our doctors, nurses and scientists working as hard and fast as possible to help more people survive.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. Georgina continued: “This year, we’re urging mums, dads, nans, grandpas, brothers, sisters, friends and workmates to show their support by joining the Race for Life. It’s a perfect example of everyday people doing an extraordinary thing – uniting in a common cause to beat cancer.” Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research. That’s why money raised through the Race for Life events is vital. It funds world-class research to help beat 200 types of cancer – including bowel cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, brain cancer, children’s cancers and leukaemia. The venue will host 12-week courses, one in street dance and one in creative sewing, with sessions designed to build confidence in people who are struggling with their mental health. Classes will encourage and inspire participants to focus on their creativity. One Stitch At A Time is a relaxed course in creative stitching that introduces participants to various approaches to embellishing through the therapeutic art of sewing.

Each week is progressive and will build confidence in helping people to complete a personal and imaginative project. The course begins on Tuesday 10 March for 12 weeks, each session costs £5.00. Street dance is a dance course designed to energise and motivate. By the end of the course those enrolled will have the confidence and ability to dance a whole routine. This course takes place Friday evenings starting on Friday 13 March. Many people find that physical activity helps them to maintain positive mental health and being active can help a person feel better about themselves and reduce the risk of depression. The Point is operated by Eastleigh Borough Council and offers a space for a range of activities as well as performance areas. Cabinet Member for Health, Tonia Craig said: “The Point is a fantastic venue for the arts but it also helps to provide a link to health and wellbeing in the local community with classes like these.These courses are a great way to help people’s mental wellbeing by combatting loneliness and boosting their confidence.” To participate in either of these courses you will need to be registered with an Eastleigh surgery. Charities receive £173,000 in memory of loved ones More than 4,000 donations were made in 2019 via a free online memorial feature offered by a number of Hampshire's co-operative funeral homes. Thanks to the generosity of those who have recently lost a loved one, £173,300 was donated via the feature offered by The Co-operative Funeralcare branches in Hampshire which are part of Southern Co-op. In 2019, the donations averaged around £42 per donation. The most generous donations by loved ones were via The Co-operative Funeralcare in Eastney, Portsmouth, with an average of £438 per donation. The memorial page also allows friends and family to set up a personal tribute page to light virtual candles, share memories, stories, photos and videos of loved ones. Steve Pearce, Chief Operating Officer for funeral care at Southern Co-op, said: "The charities people chose to donate to can be a reflection of something their loved one held dear to them or a charity that supported them at a time of need. "We know that people donated to 351 different charities last year but what we can't quantify is how many people that went on to help. The donations would have made a difference to thousands of people's lives and this is incredibly special." A total of £330,000 was donated by families across the south of England in 2019 via the free online service offered by Southern Co-op - the regional, independent co-operative.

Hampshire based charities to benefit from the contributions include Rowans Hospice which received £25,300 and provides free care and support to adults who have a life-limiting illness and their families; Phyllis Tuckwell which received £16,650 and cares for terminally ill people and their families throughout West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire; Portsmouth Hospitals Charity which received £8,570; St Michael's Hospice in North Hampshire which received £3,020; Wessex Heartbeat which received £2,250 and ensures that people being treated at the Wessex Cardiac Centre are provided with the best possible care and support; and Hampshire Asbestos Support & Awareness Group which received £2,200. Funeral homes in Hampshire offering the free online memorial feature include The Co-operative Funeralcare in Alton, Andover, Basingstoke, Bishops Waltham, Cosham, Emsworth, Fareham, Farnborough, Fleet, Gosport, Rowner, Leigh Park, Hayling Island, Liss, Cowplain, Waterlooville, Widley, Whitchurch and Portsmouth in Copnor, Eastney, Fratton, North End, Paulsgrove, Somerstown and Southsea.

Optical Express launches major new Environmental Awards

Eye care professionals tackling climate change are to be honoured at a major new awards ceremony, sponsored by leading ophthalmic provider Optical Express. The Eyes on the World Environmental Awards will celebrate the vital actions ophthalmologists, optometrists, dispensing opticians, optical advisors, optical practices and universities across the UK are taking to reduce their environmental impact. Awards will be presented to exceptional eye care professionals and organisations who are judged to be making real changes to how they practice, whether that be cutting down on plastic waste or reducing their carbon footprint. Iconic figures from the world of education, the arts, sports, medicine and philanthropy – united by a shared passion for protecting the environment – will join some of the world’s best known environmentalists in honouring the eye care professionals’ contributions. Applications for the awards will be open to all eye care professionals, optical practices and university vision sciences departments making efforts to go green. Entrants will be judged by a panel of preeminent environmentalists and climate change experts. The winners of the environmental awards will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in November during the 2020 UN Climate Change Conference being held in Glasgow.

Optical Express founder and CEO, David Moulsdale, said: “Eye care professionals across the globe are doing inspirational work for their patients and our planet. Locks Heath Swim Squad

HARRISON’ MEDAL HAUL Locks Heath Swim Squad came away from the Fareham Nomads Valentine Meet with an impressive medal haul. Twenty-seven swimmers from Locks Heath were in action competing in 122 events, producing 90 Personal Best Times, 16 Gold Medals, 13 Silver Medals and 10 Bronze Medals. Ella Harrison topped the medal table for Locks Heath with 7 medals. Ella took the Gold in 50m Backstroke, Silver in 200m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke and Bronze in the 100m Freestyle. Toby Ellis amassed five medals. Toby won 4 Golds (50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle) and one Silver (50m Backstroke). Gold medals also went to Owen Berry (50m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke), Finley Taplin (100m Breaststroke and 200m Freestyle), Josh Beadsworth (50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle), Daisy Smith (50m Freestyle and 100m Freestyle), Asher Fletcher (100 Butterfly), Jacob Knapp (100m Backstroke) and Sophie Bagby (100 m Breaststroke).

Bronze Medals were acquired by Lucy Selby (100m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley), Josh Beadsworth (100m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke), Finley Taplin (50m Backstroke), Asher Fletcher (100m Breaststroke), Jacob Knapp (100m Freestyle) and Daisy Smith (200m Individual Medley). Other Locks Heath swimmers competing at the Valentine Meet were Ben Cook, Elizabeth Brown, Max Rowlinson, Amelia Wright, Evie Sherriff-Lee, Eva Beaudro, Amelia Woodford, Grace Sandford, Anna Harding, Katie Jones, Josh Henderson, Alfie Henderson, Layla Da and Harrison Plaw. Youngsters Jonny Leeds, Sam Kent and Kai Wold were also in action, competing at their first Meet. Head Coach Lynda Reid said “All LHSS swimmers had a great Meet and the number of Personal Best Times achieved exceeded my expectations”.


COUNTY MEDALS FOR LOCKS HEATH SWIM SQUAD Locks Heath Swim Squad sent twenty-two swimmers to the 2020 Hampshire County Championships. LHSS fielded 12 teams in the relay events at Portsmouth where Charlotte Aris, Sophie Bagby, Ruby Goddard and Daisy Smith in the Girls 10-12 years 4x50m Freestyle and Medley relays. Six Locks Heath swimmers qualified to swim in 39 individual events at Waterlooville and between them qualified for thirteen finals. Eleven year old Charlotte Aris collected Silver in 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke as well as Bronze in 50m Butterfly. Charlotte also finished 4th in 100m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke and 7th in 50m Freestyle. Other finalists were eleven year old Daisy Smith (4th 50m Backstroke, 8th 50m Freestyle and 8th 100m Freestyle), ten year old Ruby Goddard (4th 50m and 100m Backstroke), ten year old Asher Fletcher (6th 50m Freestyle) and ten year old Finley Taplin (7th 50 Breaststroke). Twelve year old Toby Ellis also competed in two individual events and was placed 10th and 13th. Head Coach Lynda Reid said “Locks Heath have had a great County Championships. All the swimmers excelled themselves in the relay and individual events which resulted in a high percentage of Personal Best Times�.

Dog Wash proving a huge success at Itchen Valley Country Park A recently installed dog wash facility in a popular Hampshire country park has proved a huge hit with local pooches. Since October 2019 over 1,150 dog washes have been enjoyed at Itchen Valley Country Park, West End. Itchen Valley Country Park installed a dog wash machine near their Woodland Café in October last year. Since then, dog owners have enjoyed using the new facility that gives them the opportunity to clean their dogs, including their muddy paws. This in turn helps to keep their car clean and saves bath time at home. The dog wash is provided by Polygon Pets and has a custom-made shelter that gives dog owners the opportunity to give their dog a wash, shampoo and blow dry, for just £3, before returning home. Chair of Hedge End, West End & Botley Local Area Committee, Cllr Cynthia Garton said, “Itchen Valley Country Park is a very dog

friendly park and a great place for dog owners to enjoy a walk with their dogs. The dog wash has proved really popular especially during this wet winter – it’s a great addition to the dog walking experience at the park and I encourage other dog walkers to come along, enjoy a walk and try this fantastic new facility.” The Country Park encourages responsible dog ownership and access. Dogs, when kept on their lead, can be taken along the extensive woodland and nature trails, as well as into the visitor centre and café. Only assistance dogs can access play areas. Sensible dogs are allowed off the lead on High Hill Field - the large recreation area at the top of the main driveway. Itchen Valley Country Park is encouraging visiting dog walkers to post on Instagram using #ParkPoochesIVCP in order to promote this great new service and show how a great a location for dog walking the Country Park is.

How to write and deliver a better eulogy

Years ago I conducted a funeral where a family member stood up to pay an extremely short tribute to his Uncle. “He liked to drink and he liked to fight”. It really was short! Everyone laughed though. It was, after all, the truth. It captured the Uncle perfectly. But it got me thinking about what needs to be considered when planning a good tribute.A good eulogy is a personal tribute to the person who has died, summing up the key events of their life, but more importantly, describing their personality and what made them special to the people attending the funeral. At A H Freemantle we suggest families consider the following 5 points: 1) Less is more…no it really is. The temptation to cover every detail is overwhelming, particularly if they have had a long life. But typically around 4-5 minutes is about right. 2) Keep it personal…Short stories rather than lists of facts are more interesting to listen to. Ideally these will be stories where you were involved. Make sure it’s more about them than you though!

3) Keep it positive...If there are difficult topics to cover the congregation will probably already be aware. You don’t need to break the news to them during the funeral.

4) Keep a written copy to hand. Don’t risk standing up with only bullet points. If overcome with emotion someone else can stand in and help with a speech written in full. Use a large font if you’re typing it out. 5) Keep it conversational. Talk clearly and slowly. Look at your listeners and make eye contact while talking to them. You are sharing your personal experiences with them, they are as privileged as you are to be a part of this, but that doesn’t mean you need to lecture them. Always remember that everyone there is behind you 100% so stay calm and take your time.

The spring equinox on the 20th of March 2020, the days become longer than night. British Summer Time starts on the 29th of March and although the nights will be shorter, there is plenty going on in Space Times. Including the Trio of Jupiter, Mars and Saturn before dawn and the brilliant Venus lighting up the western skies after sunset.

Topic of interest The most unlikely person to cause a revolution in the cosmos was Nicolaus Copernicus. He was an administrator of Frombork Cathedral in Poland where he observed the movements of the planets from a tower in the grounds. In this time the ancient Greek teaching held a belief the sun and the planets circled earth, which was considered the centre of the universe.

March's constellation is Leo

Copernicus was baffled by this because his observations did not agree with the Greeks. He wondered why the sun was so different from the other moving bodies out there. He proposed a theory that the planets, including earth circled the sun! He put his theory to the test and everything clicked.

Like Orion, the fabled hunter, Leo is one of the rare constellations resembling the real thing, in this instance, it is an enormous crouching lion. Among the oldest of the constellations, Leo commemorates the giant Nemean Lion that Hercules slaughtered as the first of his twelve labours. Legend has it that the lions flesh could not be pierced by iron, bronze or stone, so it was wrestled by Hercules and he choked him to death. The heart of the lion is marked by the first magnitude star Regulus.

However as a religious man, Copernicus was aware of the Earths sanctity as being the centre of the universe. He left his publication of De Revolutionibus until he was on his deathbed in 1543. Galileo followed on to support


Copernicus and his theories and he was put under house arrest for his declarations. A century after Copernicus’s death, astronomers all rallied to agree with the theory. The sun and planets then orbited the sun, his findings squashed 1400 years of belief and paved the way to how we see the universe.

Infant School is a travel star Staff and pupils at Locks Heath Infant School are celebrating the attainment of the Silver level in the National Modeshift STARS scheme; a remarkable success in their efforts to encourage more sustainable methods of travel to and from the School and to raise the awareness of road safety. In 2018 the School signed up to the Modeshift STARS initiative which recognises and rewards excellence for the promotion of sustainable and active travel; this was driven by a recognition that School drop off and pick up times can be particularly busy on the roads and that alternative methods of getting to and from the School have the potential to deliver significant health benefits to adults and children alike. The School quickly gained the bronze level award in recognition of the activities already being performed such as visits and talks by crossing patrol staff and active participation in the National Walk to School week but that wasn’t enough. According to School Headteacher Mr Rick Jump “we were proud of achieving bronze but I just knew we could do more. Traffic in general and cars in particular are having such an impact upon everyday life and therefore I was keen for us to see how far we could take it”. With the support of the School Governors and Hampshire County Council, Locks Heath Infant School embarked on an ambitious journey which included the creation of a walk and stride point with help from Abshot Community Centre, a project to monitor the traffic/speed outside of the School, installing more bike storage and a bike to work scheme for the staff. Mr Jump added that “I am eternally grateful to one of my staff members, Miss Sofie Lewis who took this initiative and ran with it. Her enthusiasm was boundless and her efforts have resulted in our being awarded the Silver level of Modeshift STARS; a great achievement for all of our School community”

Computer Know How! – New decade, new Edge…

Adding your favourite sites to New Tab

In this issue of Computer Know How, we will be looking at Microsoft’s attempt at revamping it’s Edge browser. Microsoft has been struggling to compete with Google’s Chrome browser since its release back in 2008. Four years later, Chrome knocked Internet Explorer off of the top spot as the world’s most popular browser, and is now used by 69% of people online. With the release of Windows 10 back in 2015, Microsoft released Edge to complement its new operating system. Unfortunately for them it proved disastrous. A flawed design, and unpopularity with developers led Edge to the brink of exile. Chastened by this, and finally admitting that Google may be on to something, Microsoft spent 2019 redesigning Edge using the Chromium open source code, used by Chrome, Opera and Vivaldi. As of 15th January, Edge was relaunched and now works with all of the latest technology, including Chrome’s array of extensions. A rival has appeared…

By pressing CTRL+T in Edge you can open the New Tab page, from here you can navigate to a website of your choice. You can change what appears on the New Tab page to your own personal preference. Click on the top right cog icon and you’ll see three pre-set options. Focused keeps things simple, Inspirational shows a desktop photo and Informational shows news headlines. A fourth option Custom lets you mix and match the other three. In all of the designs, you’ll see sites in boxes that you can click on to visit. If you hover over the top right of one of the boxes, you will be able to rename or remove the site. To add in a new site, click on the plus symbol to the far right, then type a name and URL.

Over the next few months, Microsoft will be automatically installing the new Edge on Windows 10 devices via Windows Update. However, if you want to get ahead of the game, it is available to download from Microsoft here. Once installed, you’ll see a snazzy new logo, replacing the dated E remembered most fondly by Internet Explorer users. Importing Data To start, you’ll probably want to import your browser data from Chrome, thankfully Microsoft have made this straightforward, so you won’t have to spend hours configuring Edge to your own liking. Click the top right menu button, then Settings, followed by Import browser data. You’ll see a selection of check boxes that are selected by default. These include bookmarks, passwords and addresses. Untick the ones you do not want to bring across, then click Import. If you use Firefox or Internet Explorer, simply change the browser at the top.

Charity partnership makes a real difference in Portsmouth A charity initiative that enables cafĂŠ customers to buy a drink or a snack for someone affected by homeless has seen more than 1,400 vouchers bought since July. The Pay It Forward scheme was launched last year by the Society of St James (SSJ) with the help of Southern Co-op who had nominated the organisation to be its head office charity partner 2019/20. Pay It Forward was launched at CafĂŠ in the Park, in Portsmouth's Victoria Park, in July and has already had more than 1,430 vouchers bought which are given to someone facing multiple disadvantages such as homelessness, poverty and/or substance misuse. The scheme has been such a success alongside other partnership work with Southern Co-op that co-operative colleagues have extended the partnership for another year. Jessica Hughes, Community Investment Manager at Southern Co-op, said: "When we set out to find our charity partner in 2019, our aim was to work with a charity about more than just money, and our partnership with SSJ has delivered just that. "Colleagues are already committed to running local 10ks, 100 mile bike rides, volunteer days and skills shares to name a few. We also have future commitments to their sports programme, their women's project and are looking to understand more from their expertise through our Protecting Our People programme. "We are excited to see how we can truly deliver a long term impact for those who are homeless, who have experienced trauma and/or found themselves in difficult circumstances perhaps trapped in a cycle of offending behaviour and drug or alcohol misuse."

“DOG” an exhibition of paintings by Holly Frean -The Kennels, Goodwood 14 May - 21 June 2020 Zimmer Stewart Gallery are delighted to present an exhibition of paintings by Holly Frean at The Kennels, Goodwood. Holly Frean is known for her quirky, humorous take on the subjects she paints whether it is well known figures from art history, zoological animals or, as in this exhibition, more specifically dogs. This exhibition will coincide with ‘Goodwoof’, an exciting new event in the Goodwood calendar which takes place at The Kennels on 24 and 25 May (Bank Holiday weekend). Far from a typical dog show, ‘Goodwoof’ will be a grand celebration of all things dog; a unique collection of experiences designed with what dogs love in mind. The Goodwood Estate and the March family have long held dogs in highest esteem, both working and domestic. The original Kennels was purpose-built to house hounds and huntsmen and is now the central clubhouse for the estate’s sporting and social memberships. Holly Frean has collaborated with brands as diverse as Paul Smith, Burberry and Anthropologie. ‘DOG’ comprises a collection of eighteen paintings, each one a group of dog portraits, with a focus on the breeds associated with the Goodwood estate and the ancestral portraits within. The highlight of the exhibition will be two large oil-on-canvas diptychs measuring 10ft x 6ft (304 x 183 cm). The first is ‘Assembly’ showing a mixture of breeds and the second is ‘Dotty’, a large group of dalmatians. These will be joined by four framed groups, each encompassing 49 individually painted canvases: ‘Labrador’, ‘Poodle’, ‘Hound’ and ‘Lurcher’. Two further paintings will include: ‘Glorious’, celebrating the 2nd Duke’s famous pack of twenty

three hunting dogs from 1738, a grid of 24 portraits on individual A6-sized sheets of handmade cotton rag paper (with the 24th sheet being the fox!); and ‘Pack’ which will show 54 painted spaniels on individual A8-sized sheets of handmade cotton rag paper. ‘Pack’ celebrates the highlighted breed of the year for the inaugural ‘Goodwoof’ event, Spaniels being most closely associated with the March family at the Goodwood Estate. In addition, there will be ten further smaller works looking at other breeds. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition. All the paintings will be for sale. Guiding steps out to support Australian victims Girlguide units in Alverstoke and Forton held a sponsored fun run at the ‘Gosport Golden Mile’ along Stokes Bay on Saturday 22nd February from 10:00 am. The date is also World Thinking Day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts when we acknowledge the ties we have with those in Guiding around the world. The Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers locally chose to support the Emergency Relief Fund set up by the Chief Commissioner of Girl Guides Australia following the devastating bush fires in the last few months. Over 50 girls took part ranging from the youngest Rainbows (5 and over) to the Rangers who are up to 18. The girls and young women ran or walked together along the scenic mile at Stokes Bay seafront, undeterred by the wind and rain, knowing they were doing their bit for the Guides in Australia. As Emma Ansell, Assistant Division Commissioner for Gosport South, said: “We heard of Guides in their communities in Australia responding in various ways: providing places of refuge for those evacuated from fire zones; collecting and packing food and water; preparing care packs for firefighters; and making animal wraps for injured koalas. It is such good news that our young people help others in this way and we wanted to share their achievements.” The amount raised on the day was over £500 and more is still coming in. The girls felt that if everyone helped it could make a positive difference, and raise morale, showing that those in Girlguiding in Alverstoke and Forton care about the situation in Australia.

It is now very common for people in relationships to cohabit instead of marrying and to cohabit before marriage. There is no such thing as a common law husband or wife – this is an urban myth! The law does not give cohabitees the same rights to financial support or to share in their partner’s assets on the breakdown of their relationship, in the same way as spouses. Cohabitation agreements are mostly sought by couples who have decided to live together but not marry or enter into a civil partnership but who want to regulate their financial and living arrangements both during the period of cohabitation and should itcome to an end. The cohabitation agreement can be executed even after cohabitation has begun. A cohabitation agreement records arrangements between people who have chosen to live together. It records each party’s rights and responsibilities in relation to the property where they live or intend to live together, financial arrangements between them, both during and following cohabitation and the arrangements to be made if they decide that they no longer want to live together. A cohabitation agreement can be used to record ownership of assets such as property, cars, furniture, art etc which may be used or enjoyed by both parties when they live together, but perhaps are to be retained by the owner if cohabitation ends. The potential benefits of entering into cohabitation agreements are financial planning, avoiding litigation and protection of as-sets. The purpose of a cohabitation agreement is to give parties the flexibility and freedom to organise their financial affairs as they wish both during and following cohabitation and to record the cohabiting couple’s intentions about the legal and beneficial ownership of real and personal property with the aim of reducing the possibility of a dispute about ownership if cohabitation ends. Such agreements also try to identify and protect investments and contributions that you have either brought into the relationship or have contributed significantly towards during the relationship. This is very common where there is a property often where one party has paid a significant contribution, or a party has received a gift or a loan from family, or where parties are beginning a new relationship following a divorce and they wish

to safeguard their own financial security and protect a future inheritance for their children. Parties considering a cohabitation agreement should be aware of the uncertainty regarding enforceability of terms of a cohabitation agreement and that it is essential that such agreements are drafted carefully to comply with ordinary rules of contract in order to reduce the risk of them being challenged. It is important to ensure that the agreement is negotiated and signed after a sufficient cooling off period has elapsed.

Common misconceptions about divorce If you are considering a divorce you will already know the conflict you feel within yourself, the questioning of whether it is the right decision, if that is what you really want, and how hard it is to subsequently address or discuss this issue with your spouse. When considering or getting a divorce you may not know your rights, where to find reliable information, how to get divorced or what you need to do. After the final divorce order (called the Decree Absolute) I will no longer have any ties to my ex-spouse • Your marriage is legally ended once Decree Absolute is pronounced • Your financial claims against each other will remain open indefinitely until there is an approved Order from the Court addressing financial issues • Without a Court Order your ex-spouse can potentially make a claim for a share of any monies you receive, such as an inheritance or lottery win • Without a Court Order your ex-spouse can potentially come back at any time, even 20 years later, and make a claim for financial support • If you want to protect your future financial position seek legal advice regarding a financial agreement I have been the homemaker and main carer for the children so I will get nothing • As a homemaker and carer of children your contribution is relevant • You may be entitled to spousal maintenance • You are likely to have a claim in the family home and other assets • You might be awarded compensation for the loss of a career • Your needs due to lower income and/or mortgage capacity will be a primary factor within

Applications are open for the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary, administered by the New Forest Agricultural Show Society, organisers of the New Forest and Hampshire County Show. The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary was launched in 2018 following the death of Samantha Bailey and her unborn daughter Florence in January 2018. Sam was a young farmer and estate agent living in Tiptoe, Sway. Following in the footsteps of her grandparents and mother she led a wonderful life breeding and showing the Sandlea herd of Charolais cattle. It was with this enthusiasm that she joined as a member of the Show's Cattle Committee pushing the section forward becoming chairman in 2012. Through her chairmanship she met the Queen during her Jubilee visit and the Countess of Wessex showing them around the Cattle Section with her usual energy and passion.

The bursary is reliant upon the generosity of its supporters. Through fundraising initiatives and donations since 2018, the bursary fund has accumulated over ÂŁ13,000 so far. All proceeds from children's ticket sales at the 2019 New Forest and Hampshire County Show were donated to the bursary. Solent LEP grants move forward key projects to boost the Solent region The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is working with four organisations based in the area, to support projects get a step closer to being achieved. SJ Hunt, a Board Director and delivery champion for the Solent LEP said: “At their core each of these projects offer strong sustainability and economic development, and are hugely significant for the Solent region. “From supporting the creation of hundreds of new jobs, providing high-tech, state-of-the-art training spaces, new laboratories and business engagement zones for hundreds of learners and businesses through to having a beneficial impact on air quality and significantly reducing the risk of coastal flooding of properties for the next 100 years.” Portsmouth City Council's project would cover 4.5km of Southsea's seafront and aims to provide protection from coastal flooding. The project would significantly reduce the risk of coastal flooding to 10,119 residential and 1,311 commercial properties for the next 100 years. David Williams, Chief Executive Officer at Portsmouth City Council said: “I am delighted we have progressed our bid to the next level with the Solent LEP. After six years of concerted

effort from the project team and with unanimous support from the City Council, we are very close to achieving full funding for flood defences to protect the city from flooding for existing residents and future generations.” The total project cost for the first phase of this project stands at £16,000,000 and the grant request is for £5,000,000. ABP, which operates in the Port of Southampton, is developing a project to enable shore power for cruise ships at a multi-user terminal at the Europe's major cruise Port. This would be the first major commercial berth and cruise terminal benefiting from this technology in the United Kingdom. As shore power allows compatible vessels to switch off their engines,


they would emit no emissions whilst docked in Southampton. Alastair Welch, ABP’s Regional Director, said: “Shore Power represents a major opportunity for the cruise sector, the port and the city of Southampton. By giving cruise ships the opportunity to ‘plug in’ when they’re alongside will completely eliminate emissions during that time. “Our plans are also in line with the Government’s 2050 Maritime Strategy on a pathway towards lower and zero emissions.” The total project cost stands at £6,313,171 and the grant is for £4,434,350. The University of Portsmouth is proposing a new Centre for Creative and Immersive XR (CCIXR) within the University’s Faculty of

Creative and Cultural Industries, to host world-leading technology. The CCIXR will provide emerging XR (eXtended Realities) technology facilities and expertise in an integrated purpose-built environment for research and development, innovation, skills and economic development. Professor Trevor Keeble, Dean of Creative and Cultural Industries said: “CCIXR builds on the University's long standing expertise in creative technologies. Our staff and students work with businesses and organisations to bring value and innovation through research and development, and our many local, national and global partnerships are key to developing the skilled workforce of the future. Investment in cutting-edge creative and immersive technologies will make this region a centre for the rapidly emerging immersive and extended reality industries, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with Solent LEP to develop our plans." The total project cost stands at £5,184,192 and the grant is for £3,617,561. Southampton Solent University wants to complete its Maritime Strategy 2020 with the redevelopment of its Warsash Safety Training Centre, to reinforce its goal of being the global skills and training provider of choice for the maritime sector. It is aiming to deliver a unique and nationally significant marine safety training centre, focused on fire, medical, maritime and offshore, and provide a mix of classroom, changing and specialist facilities. Professor Syamantak Bhattacharya, Dean of Southampton Solent University’s Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering said: “Development of our shore-based facilities is an important part of the University’s £43 million investment in maritime education and training. We are pleased to be working with the Solent LEP to build on our world-renowned Warsash heritage, which not only benefits the University and maritime industries but also the region.” The total project cost is £22,278,482 and the grant, for phase three of the project is £4,400,000. Whilst these business cases are being produced by the lead organisations involved, the LEP will work with them to support their production, with the ultimate aim of achieving the projects' objectives.

NAVY TEAM SUPPORTS ELSON JUNIOR SCHOOL INITIATIVE A group of Year 5 pupils from Elson Junior School have just ‘graduated’ from their 6-week course working with naval personnel from HMS Collingwood on a variety of leadership activities looking at the Navy’s core values. The naval personnel from Victory Squadron worked with 10 children from the school, providing 5 2- hour sessions, weekly at the Gosport premises, with the final one taking place at HMS Collingwood, for the graduation ceremony. The sessions focused on helping the children develop, utilising the Navy’s C2DRIL; Courage, Commitment, Discipline, Respect, Integrity and Leadership, and how these qualities can be incorporated into the Navy’s various roles. Lieutenant Peter Taylor and Leading Physical Trainer Lauren McCarthy visited the school to deliver a variety of activities including knot tying, marching practice, STEM inspired work and various fun team building and leadership tasks. Lieutenant Taylor was the Liaison Officer for the programme. He said “It was a great opportunity

to show the children some of the Royal Navy core values and give them some team building exercises. The aim was to bring them out of their comfort zone and develop them as individuals, and as a team, as the course progressed.” When asked how things had gone Rebecca Hull, Family Link Worker based at the school said, “This has been brilliant. It was aimed to raise their aspirations, to try and help them see how the things they learn in school can help them throughout their lives, that school is not just about academic lessons, it’s about them developing as individuals.” Akira Olugbemi, from year 5 said “The Collingwood group was really fun and what I enjoyed most was trying to problem-solve getting the equipment from one side of the hall to the other. SAILORS HELP CARE HOME RESIDENTS SPREAD SOME LOVE

Sailors based at HMS Collingwood have taken time out of their usual training schedule to join in Valentine’s Day festivities at a local care home.A group of Warfare Trainees, all dressed in their best dress uniforms, travelled the short distance from the Base to Tudor Lodge Nursing Home to help serve a special meal, Bucks Fizz and sherry to residents celebrating Valentine’s Day. Not only that but later, they presented each lady there with a long-stemmed red rose! Afterwards the sailors took the opportunity to talk to some of the residents, sharing stories of military life with many of the veterans living there.Derek Ikens was a Chief Petty Officer in the Gunnery Section who served in the Falklands War. He explained why visits from today’s sailors means so much saying, “I’m Royal Navy through and through. I served 22 years, but I wish I could have done another 20! I love the Navy. Things have changed but I really like to keep in touch with the Navy today.” Shirley Wilson also enjoyed the sailors’ visit. She said, “It’s really lovely to see the sailors in their smart uniforms and I wish they could stay longer!”

COLLINGWOOD ESTABLISHES LINKS fascinating to see staff so passionate about what they do and all that goes on in this training WITH LOCAL SCHOOLS AND base. Hearing about the apprenticeships COLLEGES Captain Catherine Jordan Royal Navy, the Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood, recently welcomed local education leaders to the Fareham site. The aim of the visit was to forge closer links with the local community and showcase facilities and opportunities for education and engagement which could be available to local schools and colleges. In addition, it aimed to provide a greater understanding of the work conducted by staff and trainees in the local community. On welcoming the visitors Captain Jordan set the scene for the day which offered tours of key facilities on the site and included briefings by Lieutenant Peter Taylor, organiser of the day, and Warrant Officer Mark Thomas who is part of the Navy’s Apprenticeship Coordination department. Peter, a STEM Ambassador, who is also fully engaged in outreach programmes to local schools, gave examples of the programmes and activities already taking place, which could be available to other schools. Mark gave the visitors a brief on the apprenticeships available through the Navy, and the work taking place to align these to the specific roles found within the Service. Talking of the visit Nick Cousins, Deputy Head, Portchester Community School, said “It’s been

available was very interesting. It was nice to learn and educate myself about the Royal Navy and the learning that goes on. It’s been really interesting.” Alison Russell, Headteacher of Crofton Hammond Junior School said “Approximately a quarter of our population are from service families, lots of parents also work at HMS Collingwood. This is my first visit and it has been brilliant. There are three things I will take away; the enthusiasm of Lauren (McCarthy) the PTI who hosted us, the STEM opportunities available and the facilities you have here. Meeting new people and networking has been wonderful. Thank you very much indeed for the invitation.” Speaking of the visit Captain Jordan said “I am delighted that so many local schools were able to send representatives to come and visit the establishment and witness what we do. It is vitally important that we cooperate closely, not just to showcase what the Royal Navy has to offer our future generations, but also to enable closer links between education and employment. Bishop's Waltham Festival Concert 2020

The Festival Concert on Saturday 9th May will be the first event of this summer's activities. It will be at 6.30pm and once again the Church have kindly allowed us to use St. Peter's in Bishop's Waltham as the venue. The Concert singers will have spent the day with a professional choirmaster learning a range of songs to suit all tastes to perform to the audience. They are a talented bunch so we hope many people will come along to listen and be entertained by them. For the past six years, local Andover resident Anna White, of Frenches Farm, has been an avid supporter of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, having raised almost £30,000 for the life-saving charity. In April this year, Anna will be hosting two charity fundraising events at her farm, to help keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives. On Saturday 25th April, runners of all abilities will join the Charity’s first ever 5km trail run through the stunning countryside of the North Wessex Downs,

Whats On - Music VAN MORRISON CONFIRMED FOR WICKHAM FESTIVAL

Van Morrison is to headline this year’s Wickham Festival.The global superstar will top the bill on Saturday August 8 in front of what is sure to be a sell-out crowd. It is a major coup for organisers who have worked hard to secure the rock legend who recently sold out six nights at the London Palladium. The Belfast singer-songwriter has a huge catalogue of hits to his name, most notably Brown Eyed Girl, Gloria, Moondance and Jackie Wilson Said. His live performances are renowned on the rock circuit and his appearance is set to spark a surge in sales. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “This is absolutely massive for us – and for the village. It will be very special to have such a rock and roll icon coming to Wickham. This really does put us on the map. “Van Morrison is one of the biggest names not just in British music but across the world. He has been one of the most influential singer-songwriters in the business for many decades and it is a real privilege to have him here. “His live performances really are something special and I know our fans will love having him here. Following last years successful inaugural Tour of Legends, we are pleased to announce we are this year having the classic car run on Sunday 28th June, 2020. We have spaces for up to 60 vehicles which the proceeds raised going to local charities. We will be calling into various destinations on route where the cars will be displayed to the general public. Bill Rawles Classic car sales and restoration have kindly agreed to be our main sponsor for the event. Last year was a great day with a lovely Bunch of classic car owners and a great atmosphere.

Crocus was chosen as it blooms in late February early March as Rotary International celebrates its anniversary each 23rd February. It was started in 1905 = 115 years ago. Why purple? Rotary International launched a project in 1985 to protect the children of the world from poliomylitus (Polio for short) . A virus that affects the central nervous system causing limbs to become flaccid. It mainly affects children under five. Fortunately, there has not been an outbreak of polio in the UK for many years but it still affects children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Children can be immunised against polio by giving them just two drops of vaccine. In countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan and other countries that are vulnerable to polio outbreaks when children taking part in mass immunisations have a purple dye put onto the little finger of their left hand. This enables immunisation teams to check that all the children have received the drops. Hence the colour associated with the project to rid the whole world of polio.

The tour features two different collections of extraordinary films from the world’s best adventure film-makers, with super-human challenges, soulful journeys and spectacular cinematography from the wildest corners of the planet. The British Motor Yacht Show (BMYS) is pleased to announce that the 2020 show will extend to four days from Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th May and will include more craft than ever before. Watercress Line welcomes Thomas the Tank Engine this Easter for its 75th anniversary

Not only will visitors get unlimited trips behind Thomas at Ropley, but Thomas’ friends will be waiting for passengers at Alresford. Watercress Line’s home fleet and miniature railway can also be enjoyed throughout the day. Ropley Station will provide the coveted opportunity to shake hands with the Fat Controller and enjoy endless fun on the vintage fairground rides. Plus, younger Thomas fans can enjoy Thomas-themed activities such as Thomas playsets, colouring and DVD shows.

Mid Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’ will be welcoming the world’s favourite little blue tank engine this Easter during its 75th anniversary year, as its hugely popular Day Out With Thomas event returns. From 10th - 19th April 2020, Thomas and his friends will be at the heritage railway bringing with them a huge range of exciting activities for all the family to enjoy. Following a successful debut in 2019, sweeping duo Rusty and Dusty return this year bringing the world of Thomas and his friends to life with storytelling and mischievous magic performances at Ropley. Renowned local chef Jay Geddes and Southampton Football Club legend Francis Benali are once again teaming up to host a charity dinner cruise. The culinary event, on-board Dutch-owned Princess Caroline, will take guests on an evening tour of the south coast on Thursday 30- July with proceeds going to Cancer Research UK. “This is a great chance for people to come together for an evening of wonderful food, good music and beautiful views of the south coast and to raise money for this amazing charity at the same time,” said Franny. “Cancer Research UK will benefit from the proceeds of the evening, and that makes me very happy. With Chef Jay Geddes and friends cooking up three delicious courses, I have absolutely no doubt it will be an evening to remember for all concerned.”
