Kidney Injury and Synthetic Marijuana The National Kidney Foundation’s Spring Clinical Meetings took place at the end of March, in Dallas. At that event there were two separate papers presented by physicians providing information relating to kidney injury or failure after consumption of synthetic marijuana, such as K2 or Spice. In a news release by the National Kidney Foundation, Kerry Willis, chief scientific officer of the Foundation,

said: “Use and abuse of these products have been tied to acute kidney injury in patients across the country.” The specialists indicate that there is not currently definite proof that synthetic marijuana causes kidney injury; there is a suspected correlation between use and kidney injury based upon cases that have arisen across the US. While the injury to the kidneys is life threatening, it has thus far been found that the dam-

age appears to be reversible. The kidneys of the patients involved in the papers responded to emergency dialysis. It is not known at this time what part of the synthetic pot is causing the kidney injury. There is speculation that there may be heavy metal residue in the product causing a negative impact on the body. NKF Article NIH article Renal & Urology News Leslie C. Marlowe

More About Teens and Alcohol A new study performed with rats suggests that binge drinking during teen years may have lasting consequences, including interfering with brain development. One interesting finding of the study was that rats who binge drank while young tended to prefer alcohol to water when they were older and also showed anxiety as adults. Also, DNA changes were found in the binge drinking adolescent rats.

A study of 15 year olds in Britain found that exposure to alcohol use in films has a relationship to experimentation with alcohol by youths as well as possibly to binge drinking by teens. The study can be found online in the journal Pediatrics. The objective of the study was “To investigate whether exposure to alcohol use in films (AUFs) is associated with early alcohol use, binge drinking, and alcohol-

related problems in British adolescents.” The study adjusted for factors such as mental health conditions, parental drinking habits, socioeconomic status and family characteristics. Reuters Article Time Article Pediatrics Journal
